LUV UR SKIN Scrub Off Pure Bamboo Face Scrub is a cruelty-free and vegan face scrub, from this wonderful Australian brand, that is gentle and effective. It is perfect for teens and adults alike, and it leaves skin soft, smooth, supple and luminous. The Bamboo Powder offers effective exfoliation without damaging the skin or leaving it irritated or red. I find it effective, and the light refreshing aroma is very pleasant.

Winter Exfoliation and Hydration for Perfectly Radiant Skin

Exfoliating is among my favorite type of skincare treatment in which to indulge. However, exfoliating the skin can be very drying, and therefore more problematic when exacerbated by the cold winter weather. While I exfoliate a little less during the colder months, I do not stop altogether. However, I do like to follow up with a more nourishing and hydrating sheet mask, and a high SPF sunscreen to protect my skin. I am featuring two products that I have been testing, and I found that they work amazingly well together. The result is beautifully exfoliated skin that is ultra-hydrated and luminous. Beyond Glow Smoothing Peeling Gel and INNA ORGANIC Green Tea Rose Soothing Hydrasol Mask are a mighty duo, indeed.

Beyond Glow Smoothing Peeling Gel ($37.00 for 3.38 oz. from Chi and Amazon): This gentle exfoliant is such a pleasure to use. You simply apply it to clean, dry skin and gently massage your face. Dead skin pills effortlessly, and washes away, revealing seriously soft and supple skin. It is as effective as it is fun to use, and it has a barely-there aroma that is so faint that it should pose no problem to sensitive skin and noses.

Revisiting an Old Friend: Colbert MD Intensify Facial Disks

Five years ago I fell head-over-heels in love with Colbert MD skincare, and while I have loved many other brands since then, I keep returning to this wonderful line of dermatologist created products. From the first moment that I tried the Colbert MD Intensify Facial Disks, I was hooked– and that love persists unabated.

One of the key components to healthy luminous skin is the requisite amount of exfoliation. Too little and skin looks dull and listless, too much and skin becomes damaged and traumatized. Ideally, using an effective exfoliator on a weekly basis and judiciously using (and reapplying) an SPF 30 or higher will go a long way to maintaining healthy skin and the highly sought after youthful radiance.

I have regularly used various types of facial exfoliating pads for many years, and have to confess that my experience with Colbert MD Intensify Facial Disks was a real game changer for me all of those years ago. While most of the solution soaked exfoliating pads that I have used are thin and double sided, Colbert MD has reimagined its form and instead has opted for a very plush and thick single sided pad. The generously saturated pre-moistened disks include a small tab on the back that makes holding the disk easy, and allows one to maintain effortless control.

The combination of the mild microdermabrasion action from the surface of the pad coupled with the enzyme action of the solution immediately and effectively encourages cell turnover that aids in the promotion of collagen production. I absolutely love a high quality exfoliator, and one with great efficacy that mimics the effects of microdermabrasion– is a sure way to get my attention. My favorite exfoliator in this category, to date, is unquestionably GOLDFADEN MD Doctor's Scrub Ruby Crystal Microderm Exfoliator. I have used many of their products over the years, and I have yet to try anything that I didn't really like from this brand.

GOLDFADEN MD Doctor's Scrub Ruby Crystal Microderm Exfoliator is a very effective exfoliant formulated for all skin including: normal, combination, blemish-prone, dry, mature and sensitive types. The base is densely populated with tiny exfoliating particles that aren't jagged, and therefore they aren't harmful to the skin. However, it should be noted that there is considerable grit to its consistency, and therefore one should use a very light hand, rather than brute force when exfoliating with this scrub (or any scrub for that matter). That it does an exquisite job exfoliating dead skin cells is evident after a single use, and it leaves skin soft, smooth, supple and radiant. Furthermore, unlike many facial scrubs, this one is formulated with Hyaluronic Acid, which helps retain moisture and that helps to plump fine lines. It has no added fragrance, and only the most faint aroma can be detected from the ingredients themselves, but it is unlikely to register for even the most sensitive noses. It should be noted that it is highly concentrated, and therefore the 3.5 oz. jar should last a long time.

I have used lots and lots of cleansing face scrubs over the years, and have to say that PUR Joystick Exfoliating Deep-Pore Cleanser has proven to be one of my favorite skincare products in my travel bag. It is so easy to use, easy to travel with and it delivers extraordinary results. You simply wet your face and then gently massage this stick over your face. It forms a super creamy lather, has the perfect amount of exfoliating particles and once you rinse your skin you will be so happy by the extent to which it leaves skin soft, clean and exfoliated. Given that it is a solid stick, you don't have to worry about spillage in your bag– making it a perfect travel companion.

Arbonne RE9 Advanced Prepwork Cleansing Polish is an effective cleansing exfoliator that forms a light and gentle gel-based lather. It effortlessly removes dead skin cells to reveal silky smooth, soft and luminous skin. The exfoliating particles are uniform, and without jagged edges, and they neither dry out, nor irritate the skin. This cleansing polish has no detectable aroma, it is incredibly user friendly, and it leaves behind no greasy residue. This is my second or third tube, and certainly not my last. I leave a tube in the shower and use it a couple of times a week, but with normal/combination skin, I could use it more often.

Fleur's Exfoliants for Perfect Summer Skin

French beauty brand, Fleur's, knows a thing about beautiful skincare that is a pleasure to use. Brigitte Gédouin created Fleur's because of her love of "flowers, paintings colors, scents…" and therefore her collection, "is filled with the artistic world of its creator." 

Fleur's makes a few really remarkable exfoliants for the face and body that I have had been rather obsessed with, and after using them for a while I thought that I would share my thoughts with you.

Fleur's Intense Exfoliating Cream ($44.00 for 1.6 oz. from LeSpa USA): This effective physical exfoliant gently, and immediately, removes dead skin cells, impurities and any remaining makeup. It leaves skin soft, smooth, supple and luminous without stripping the skin. It has a lovely light floral aroma that is incredibly pleasing to the senses without being in the least bit overpowering.

According to Fleur's,

Thanks to the combination of intensive exfoliants of natural origin and hibiscus oil, this creamy scrub provides the face with a sublime "new skin" effect. Day after day, the skin is smoothed, skin texture is visibly refined and the freshness of the complexion revealed. Incredibly soft and radiant, the skin is wrapped with a delightful floral fragrance.

Directions: Apply a small amount of product twice a week to entire face and neck over clean, dry skin avoiding the eye contour. Exfoliate with circular movements and then rinse with water.

Select Ingredients:
SILICA: deeply exfoliates the skin to refine its texture and to unclog pores
HIBISCUS OIL: protects and improves the barrier function of the skin, regenerates
KAOLIN: gently cleanses and absorbs impurities to rid the skin of its dull veil, reveals radiance

Fleur's Floraskin Blossom Renewing Serum ($89.00 for 1 oz. from LeSpa USA): This lightweight and fast absorbing serum, which can be used in the morning and evening, harnesses the exfoliating properties of floral acids to remove dead skin cells in order to reveal radiant, fresh skin. Furthermore, it lightly plumps fine lines and leaves skin remarkably smooth. It has a lovely light floral aroma, but it is neither long-lasting, nor overpowering.

According to Fleur's,

This infinitely silky serum makes the skin blossom with new youth. Its innovative formula combines natural floral acids with the Plumping Floral Bouquet. It acts beyond wrinkles to restore density and revive freshness of the skin. The skin renewing effect is dazzling: the skin is smoother, springier and the complexion is visibly refreshed.

Directions: Apply to the entire face and neck, morning and evening, prior to a day or night cream.

Fleur's Delightful Body Exfoliating Mist ($53.50 for 3.3 oz. from LeSpa USA): I am thoroughly obsessed with this exfoliating body mist– it is unlike anything else that I have tried. It has the most gorgeous floral aroma, it hydrates and refreshes the skin, and it effectively exfoliates dead skin cells. Simply spray it on your body, gently massage the skin and let it do the rest.

According to Fleur's,

Fleur's Delightful Body Exfoliating Mist is an exfoliaitng application for a fast, fresh, hydrating boost for the body. After lightly misting the floral water onto the body, smooth hands over the skin until absorbed for an ultra-soft, quenching finish for all skin types.

Directions: Spray on the body then massage to gently exfoliate and moisturize the skin. Apply once a day, do not rinse.

Overall Assessment: If you are looking for effective exfoliants, that are gentle and effective, Fleur's exfoliants are definitely worthy of your consideration. I cannot sufficiently underscore the extent to which it is important to use sunscreen in general, but it is extra important to remember to use sunscreen liberally and very often when exfoliating your skin– which leaves it more vulnerable to the elements.

Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub and Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask for Clear, Radiant Skin

Derma E is one of my favorite affordable natural skin brands, and I use their products all of the time. They make so many amazing products that live up to their claims, that pamper the skin, and that don't break the budget. Here are two of my recent go-to products as the weather warms up in Los Angeles.

Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub ($15.50 for 4 oz. from Derma E, Ulta, Skin Care RX, Walgreens, Birchbox and Dermstore): This is a highly effective exfoliant that gently lifts dead skin cells and dirt leaving skin clean, clear and radiant. The exfoliating particles are small in size, and they are gentle enough against the skin that one could use this scrub on a daily basis, or as needed, for oilier skin types. For my normal to combination skin, I find that I only need to use this scrub once or twice a week to see all of the benefits. While the Menthol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate is toward the middle of the list of ingredients, it only offers the faintest tingle to the skin, and serves to be refreshing rather than irritating. This scrub is very well-suited for combination to oily skin.

Derma E Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask ($19.50 Derma E, Ulta, Skin Care RX, Skin Store, Walgreens, Target, Beauty Encounter and Birchbox): This 2-in-1 charcoal and clay mask not only draws out impurities, debris and excess sebum as many clay masks do, but it also contains exfoliating particles that sweep away dead skin cells. Simply apply it as a traditional clay mask, let it dry after about 5 minutes, then wet fingers and gently massage mask in a circular motion in order to activate the exfoliant. Skin is left remarkably clean, decongested and radiant. I neither find it stripping, nor uncomfortable on the skin. However, the refreshing peppermint tingle from the Menthyl Lactate, which is an ester of menthol and lactic acid, may be too active for people with particularly sensitive skin. For my normal/combination skin it is refreshing and exhilarating, and not in the least bit drying or irritating.

Directions: Apply generously to clean facial skin, avoiding eye and lip area. Leave on for 5 minutes or until mask is completely dry. Moisten fingertips, then massage mask gently in a circular motion to activate exfoliants. Concentrate on areas of congestion such as nose, chin and forehead. Rinse thoroughly, or remove with a damp cloth. Pat dry. Use 1-2 times a week.

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Gel Extract*, Kaolin (Clay), Bentonite (Clay), Glycerin (Vegetable Derived) , Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Seed Powder, Charcoal Powder, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame, Kimarine®) Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium (Canadian Willowherb ™) Extract, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Menthyl Lactate, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Overall Assessment: These are both perfectly suited for most types of skin to detox, clarify, exfoliate and draw out impurities. For dry skin, they are great for periodic use, as needed. However, for normal to oily skin types, these are perfect to use a couple of times a week.
