Peter Thomas Roth Strawberry Scrub Fruit Enzyme Polisher Revisted

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

A longtime Lola's Secret Beauty Blog reader sent me an email because they wanted to know if I currently had a tried and true facial exfoliator that I have used for a long time, and that I still loved. I looked no further than my shower, and my well-used bottle of Peter Thomas Roth Strawberry Scrub Fruit Enzyme Polisher, and quickly responded the email. My skin can be sensitive and a bit irritable at times, and this exfoliator has never let me down or irritated my skin in the least bit.

Peter Thomas Roth Strawberry Scrub Fruit Enzyme Polisher is a delectably scented exfoliator that is formulated for use on the face and the body. The fruit enzymes break down and remove dead skin cells while the finely ground almonds offer physical exfoliation. Simply apply to the skin and add water to gently exfoliate the skin, and rinse thoroughly. Skin is left soft, smooth, hydrated and luminous. I only need to use this once a week, but your use may vary depending upon the needs of your skin.

According to Peter Thomas Roth,

Refreshing face and body scrub helps to exfoliate, brighten and nourish the look of skin with Strawberry Fresh Cells™,* Strawberry Purée and Strawberry Enzyme. Strawberry Fresh Cells™ are specially extracted and microencapsulated for the ultimate nutrient delivery and performance, providing skin with nourishing moisture. Strawberry Purée consists of the skin, pulp, juice and seeds of the strawberry fruit and is high in brightening Vitamin C and Polyphenols. Strawberry Enzyme helps to improve the look of dullness for a more radiant appearance, while finely ground almonds gently exfoliate and remove surface impurities. Skin is left feeling fresh, smooth, soft and revitalized.

Directions: Using a small amount on the fingertips, add water and gently exfoliate the face, chest and body. Use daily or as often as needed. For external use only.

Overall Assessment: I remain impressed by this exfoliator, and if you are looking for an exfoliator that you can use on your face and body, this one is worthy of your consideration.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Exfoliator Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator for Perfectly Glowing Skin

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

A clear, bright, healthy, glowing and smooth complexion is always something I try to achieve, and therefore one of my favorite types of products is an effective, but gentle exfoliant. Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator effectively addresses these essential attributes for me since it is gentle, effective, non-stripping, and it has enough fine grit that it feels like an at-home microdermabrasion treatment. There is an abundance of fine, and uniform, exfoliating particles that do not leave my skin feeling irritated. Instead, my skin is left incredibly soft, silky-smooth and luminous. The results are immediate, and after a single use you will see a real difference.

You simply apply a pea-sized amount to damp skin and very gently use a circular motion to buff away dead skin cells. I also like to leave it on for a few minutes, either before or after manual exfoliation since it allows the enzymes to further break down the dead skin cells. My balanced to combination skin is left soft, smooth, supple and with a pronounced clarity. It is not, however, left dry, flaky or irritated. I should note that it has no discernible aroma, and therefore it should not bother people who avoid skincare products that are fragranced.
According to Vasanti,

A gentle yet powerful facial exfoliator. This papaya and aloe enriched exfoliator will remove dead skin, reveal a radiant complexion and fight common skin concerns like dull skin, dark spots, acne scars, wrinkles & more. You'll see results after just one use. An oil-free, deep pore cleansing exfoliator that helps brighten your complexion. Contains professional dermatology grade microdermabrasion crystals and papaya enzymes to help remove dead skin cells. Provides instant results with visibly smoother skin.

Benefits:
♥  Removes dead skin
♥  Reveals a radiant complexion
♥  Gives you an at-home microdermabrasion facial
♥  Enriched with papaya, professional microcrystals and aloe
♥  Fights dull skin, dark spots, scarring, wrinkles & more!
♥  See results after just one use!
♥ This is a cruelty-free product from a cruelty-free company.

Directions: Wet face and massage a pea-sized amount in a circular motion, focusing on problem areas. Rinse with warm water and pat dry to reveal an instantly brighter complexion. Use 3-5 times a week for straight-from-the-spa results. Leaving it on clean skin allows the product to double as a mask!

Highlighted ingredients:

Papaya: Breaks down dead skin cells for easy removal, helps smooth your skin’s surface to uncover healthy glowing skin. Gently dissolves skin cells and debris, helps fade dark spots and evens out your skin tone. Also has natural acne treatment properties.

Dermatologist-grade Microderm Crystals: Used by dermatologists, gives you the exfoliation of a microdermabrasion treatment at home! It is the second hardest mineral next to diamonds. It is incredible for skin stimulation and removal of dry, dead skin.

Aloe Vera: Soothes and heals skin. Used to balance the exfoliation process leaving the skin smooth and soft.

Coconut: Antiseptic and hydrating properties.

Panthenol: A Vitamin B ingredient which keeps the skin smooth by helping to maintain the natural moisture balance in the skin and killing surface bacteria. Also helps reduce inflammation and irritation.

Ingredient Callouts: 99% natural, paraben free, sulfate free, alcohol free, Vegan, Cruelty free.
Overall Assessment: I love a high quality, effective and gentle exfoliator, and the Vasanti BrightenUp! Exfoliator Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator has all three of these highly desired attributes.

Elina Organics Treatment Enzyme Gel Review

Press Sample (Unaffiliated Links)

Elina Organics Treatment Enzyme Gel, created by celebrity esthetician Elina Fedotova, is an at-home exfoliating treatment that targets hyperpigmentation and sun damage. This exfoliating gel, which is made from highly concentrated fruit extracts, also hydrates and brightens the complexion. It can be used anywhere on the face or body where you want to treat hyperpigmentation and sun damage, but before treating discoloration it is a very wise idea to see your doctor to make sure that those areas are not precancerous lesions, cancer or melanoma.

While I find that this product is gentle on my skin, and that it does not cause it to become red or irritated, it is not recommended for people with very sensitive skin or advanced rosacea. According to Elina Fedotova, it is especially beneficial for dry, aging, and dull complexions.

I should note that Elina Organics Treatment Enzyme Gel has the delectable aroma of Orange Blossoms, and while I find it otherworldly it may not work for people with sensitivities to aromatic skincare products.

Directions: If using at home, this product can be applied every night on cleansed skin in place of a serum. Follow with your favorite Elina Organics moisturizer. This treatment is not recommended for supersensitive complexions and those with advanced rosacea.

According to Elina Organics,

Treatment Enzyme Gel helps to gently exfoliate and improve skin texture. This gel is a whole fruit-based alternative to retinol (vitamin-A) and contains highly concentrated whole fruit extracts that naturally hydrate, brighten, and firm your skin. This treatment will help get rid of unwanted pigment spots on your face and body. It is especially beneficial for dry, aging, and dull complexionsThis gel is a whole fruit-based alternative to retinol (Vitamin A) and contains highly concentrated whole fruit extracts that naturally hydrate, brighten, and firm.

Ingredient Highlights:

  • Pomegranate: a natural source of succinic acid & tartaric acid (and other alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)) which have powerful antioxidant effects that firm skin and minimize signs of aging by reducing toxins and free radicals, lightens scars and hyperpigmentation, provides powerful antioxidants, contains natural antimicrobials from Vitamin C.
  • Kiwi & Mango: a natural source of beta carotene which is a precursor to vitamin A (retinol) and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), provides other powerful antioxidants.
  • Coconut Extract with Probiotics (Lactobacillus): “friendly” bacteria that hydrates and brightens skin, soothes dryness and irritation, reduces acne, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles.

Overall Assessment: This is a really effective at-home exfoliating treatment, and it is a pleasure to use.

It can be used on the face, lips, neck and décolleté, and it is gentle enough that people with dry and sensitive skin should be able to use it without irritation. I like to gently massage it into my skin and then let it sit for a few minutes so that the fruit enzymes can really work their magic. Clear skin must-haves:

Derma e Purifying Gel Cleanser with Marine Algae and Activated Charcoal ($15.50 for 6 oz. from derma eBirchbox and Whole Foods Market): This dark gray, charcoal-laden, lathering cleanser effectively draws out impurities and deeply cleans the skin without stripping it. It refreshes the skin and hydrates, and leaves skin soft and supple. This is an ideal daily cleanser for people with combination to oily skin, and those who battle breakouts. It can also be used as needed by people who periodically want to draw out impurities, I don't think that it is ideally suited for dryer skin types.

Directions: Gently lather over face and neck, then rinse thoroughly with water. Use morning and evening. Follow with derma e® Purifying Toner Mist and your favorite derma e® moisturizer.

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Extract*, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate (Coconut Derived), Glycerin (Vegetable Derived), Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Microcrystalline Cellulose (Plant Derived), Cellulose Gum (Plant Derived), Charcoal Powder, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame, Kimarine®) Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium (Canadian Willowherb™) Extract, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub ($15.50 for 4 oz. from Derma E and Birchbox): This is a highly effective exfoliant that gently lifts dead skin cells and dirt leaving skin clean, clear and radiant. The exfoliating particles are small in size, and they are gentle enough against the skin that one could use this scrub on a daily basis, or as needed, for oilier skin types. For my normal to combination skin, I find that I only need to use this scrub once or twice a week to see all of the benefits. While the Menthol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate is toward the middle of the list of ingredients, it only offers the faintest tingle to the skin, and serves to be refreshing rather than irritating. This scrub is very well-suited for combination to oily skin.

Directions: Apply a small amount to wet or dry skin and gently massage in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Gentle enough for daily use.

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Cetyl Alcohol, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Seed Powder, Glycerin, Coco-Caprylate, Charcoal Powder, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame, Kimarine®) Extract, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract* (.1%), Menthol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Xanthan Gum, Diheptyl Succinate, Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer, Menthyl Lactate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Coco-Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Iron Oxide, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Derma E Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask ($19.50 Derma ETarget and Birchbox): This 2-in-1 charcoal and clay mask not only draws out impurities, debris and excess sebum as many clay masks do, but it also contains exfoliating particles that sweep away dead skin cells. Simply apply it as a traditional clay mask, let it dry after about 5 minutes, then wet fingers and gently massage mask in a circular motion in order to activate the exfoliant. Skin is left remarkably clean, decongested and radiant. I neither find it stripping, nor uncomfortable on the skin. However, the refreshing peppermint tingle from the Menthyl Lactate, which is an ester of menthol and lactic acid, may be too active for people with particularly sensitive skin. For my normal/combination skin it is refreshing and exhilarating, and not in the least bit drying or irritating.

Directions: Apply a generous amount of mask to a clean face, avoiding the eye and lip area. Leave on for 5 minutes or until the mask is completely dry. Moisten fingertips, then massage the mask into your skin with gentle circular motions to activate the exfoliants. Concentrate on areas that can be especially congested, such as the nose, chin, and forehead. Rinse thoroughly or remove with a damp cloth. Pat skin dry. Use 1 to 2 times a week for best results.

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Gel Extract*, Kaolin (Clay), Bentonite (Clay), Glycerin (Vegetable Derived) , Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Seed Powder, Charcoal Powder, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame, Kimarine®) Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium (Canadian Willowherb ™) Extract, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Menthyl Lactate, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
Overall Assessment: Derma E makes so many impressive products, and they are affordable, effective and a pleasure to use. If your skin needs brightening, or you need to heal breakouts, you just can't go wrong with these picks!

Mad Hippie MicroDERMABRASION Facial Review

Press Sample (Unaffiliated Links)

It has been a while since I have tried something new from Mad Hippie, and when I learned about their brand new MicroDERMABRASION Facial, I was quite excited to try it. Their products are effective, cruelty-free, a pleasure to use and affordable.

Mad Hippie MicroDERMABRASION Facial is a seriously effective, and easy to use, exfoliant that utilizes a blend of physical exfoliants, from bamboo and volcanic ash, in concert with 6 different alpha-hydroxy acids and probiotics, to exfoliate dead skin cells. The physical exfoliating particles, which are gentle against the skin, dislodge dead skin cells while the AHAs help to dissolve them. The end result is clean, soft, smooth, glowing skin that is neither irritated, nor stripped.

According to Mad Hippie,

Micro-exfoliants join forces with 6 alpha hydroxy acids plus probiotics to brighten, soften & smooth.  Physical exfoliants, bamboo & volcanic ash, gently buff away dry, dull skin, while half a dozen AHAs, including glycolic & mandelic acid, offer a gentle chemical exfoliation that leaves you glowing! Probiotics to soothe and nourish. A true dermabrasion treatment that can be used up to 2x weekly for an at-home spa experience!  This dual action resurfacing treatment combines physical micro-exfoliants with alpha hydroxy acids for brighter, smoother skin.

The MicroDermabrasion Facial utilizes a blend of six different AHAs, plus probiotics, volcanic ash, and bamboo extract which provides two types of exfoliation. The physical exfoliants gently buff away dead skin cells while the AHA blend, including glycolic acid, provides a deeper level of exfoliation. Unlike the Polishing Mask, it is not a dry formula and does not need to be mixed with water as it is a ready-to-use product. We recommend massaging into clean, damp skin in a circular, buffing motion, leaving on for three minutes, and then rinsing with lukewarm water. It can be followed with a moisturizer. This is an advanced treatment that we recommend for use once or twice a week max.

Directions: Massage into clean, damp skin in a circular, buffing motion. Leave on 3 mins, then rinse. Follow with moisturizer. Use up to 2x weekly.

Select Ingredients and Their Attributes:

Fruit Acid Complex: Reduce the appearance of wrinkles & brighten with botanical extracts delivering 5 naturally occurring AHAs:  Lactic Acid (from Bilberry), Glycolic Acid (from Sugarcane), Citric Acid (from Orange & Lemon), and Malic & Tartaric Acid (from Sugar Maple).

Mandelic Acid: A gentle, yet effective alpha hydroxy acid for brightening & exfoliating.

Lactococcus Ferment Lysate: Probiotic ferment wonderful for soothing dry, sensitive skin.

Squalane (vegan): Naturally hydrate & soothe the skin.

Volcanic Ash:Acts as a physical exfoliant while also being high in minerals such as magnesium, silica and iron.

Bamboo Extract: Physical exfoliant rich in antioxidants that are shown to reduce the appearance of skin discoloration.

Licorice Extract: Rich in flavanoids, this skin nourishing ingredient also helps reduce the appearance of skin discoloration.

Hyaluronic Acid: A naturally occurring substance in the body, hyaluronic acid begins to deplete as we age.  Applied topically, it aids in moisture retention.

Ingredients: Deionized Water (Aqua), Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Bambusa Arundinacea Stem Extract (Bamboo), Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Pumice (Volcanic Ash), Mandelic Acid, Fruit Acid Complex (Vaccinium Myrtillus Fruit Extract - Saccharum Officinarum [Sugarcane] Extract - Acer Saccharum [Sugar Maple] Extract - Citrus Aurantium Dulcis [Orange] Fruit Extract - Citrus Limon [Lemon] Fruit Extract [DL Fruit Acid]), Myristic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Stearic Acid, Squalane (Vegan) Lactococcus Ferment Lysate (Probiotic), Phenethyl Alcohol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate Acid (Hyaluronic Acid), Steam Distilled Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Steam Distilled Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil.

Overall Assessment: This is a really great addition to Maddi Hippie's wonderful range of cruelty-free skincare products. I highly recommend try their products in general, and this exfoliant is really worthy of consideration.

Derma e suggests that it can be used on your hands, elbows, heels, knees– or anywhere you need to exfoliate rough skin, and I definitely agree that it is quite effective on rough skin in those regions as well.

According to Derma E,

Immediately improve the appearance of your skin using this gentle yet effective multi-award-winning Microdermabrasion Scrub. This salon-perfect formula uses an exclusive crystal blend including Dead Sea Salt and Volcanic Sand (rich in Silica) to buff away dull surface cells, help diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, and absorb excess skin oils. Enriched with natural astringents Lime and Lemon Peel plus antioxidants Grapeseed and Vitamin E, this pro-grade treatment retexturizes skin, leaving it soft, smooth and younger-looking. May also be used on your hands, elbows, knees, heels or any part of the body to promote soft, smooth and healthy skin. Ideal if you're looking for immediate results from a salon-perfect treatment in the privacy of your own home. Please note: The crystal blend used in this product is a large molecular structure and is therefore not bio-available to the body, so there is no possibility of absorption through the skin

Four Favorite Facial Exfoliants in May

Press Sample and Purchased (Affiliate Links)

I have been wearing no makeup (except for the periodic Zoom meetings for work), but I have been babying my skin since we have been living under the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, and my skin is quite happy. One of my very favorite treats is using a great quality facial exfoliant, and here are my Top 4 for the month of May:

Aesop Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste ($53.00 for 2.9 oz. from Nordstrom and SkinStore): This is a non-lathering cream-based exfoliator that uses fine quartz and lactic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. The former physically exfoliates skin while the latter helps to dissolve dead skin cells, and the combination of the two simultaneously removes dirt and helps to clear clogged pores. The end result is thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, and yet unstripped, skin that is rendered soft, smooth and supple. Furthermore, it rinses very clean and therefore leaves behind no greasy residue. One can detect the aromas of the Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, the Lavender Oil and the Rosemary Oil, and their combination is at once earthy, calming and very pleasant. This is well suited to my normal/combination skin.

According to Aesop,

Fine riverbed quartz contained in a cream base sloughs away tired surface cells while lactic acid offers a mild chemical exfoliation to leave skin immediately cleansed, soft and polished. Aesop product formulations use botanical and scientifically validated man-made ingredients of the highest quality.

Skin Types: Normal, dry and mildly sensitive skin, frequent travellers, shavers, winter and cool climates.
Suggested Directions: Dispense half a teaspoon into the palm of your hand. Work over your face and neck, including the lips. Avoid the immediate eye area. Allow the quartz and lactic acid to gently exfoliate by employing minimal pressure. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then follow with your preferred Aesop toner and hydrator.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Quartz, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Cetearyl Alcohol, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Ceteareth-20, Glycerin, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, C12-16 Alcohols, Lactic Acid, Ormenis Multicaulis Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Disodium EDTA, Magnesium Nitrate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazolinone, Linalool, d-Limonene.
African Botanics Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish ($75.00 for 3.4 oz./100 ml. from African BotanicsNet-A-PorterCredo Beauty and Cult Beauty £66.00): Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish is a very deep-cleansing facial exfoliator that effectively and efficiently sweeps away impurities and cleans out clogged pores. It is formulated with a combination of Marula Oil, Baobab Oils and Buchu Plant extracts that are punctuated by Micro-Algae and ultra-fine granules of ancient volcanic minerals. The fine granules, which densely populate this exfoliator, efficiently and effectively unclog pores, and remove dead skin cells, excess oils and impurities. Papaya and Pineapple enzymes help to dissolve dead skin cells, aid in cleaning out the pores, and make them appear reduced in size. Skin is left brightened, deeply cleansed and utterly glowing. In fact, the first time that I used it I noticed that it left my skin feeling as soft and silky smooth as ultra-fine velvet. Only the smallest amount is needed to achieve the desired results for the face, neck and décolleté, and the exfoliating particles are so efficient that you do not need to apply any pressure as you massage it into the skin. Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish Skin neither strips the skin, nor does it deplete vital moisture or hydration. Dull, congested skin gives way to youthful, radiant skin that feels amazing to the touch.

Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish has a wonderful earthy aroma that greatly enhances the sensory experience of using this exfoliator. While it is formulated for most skin types, people with sensitive skin should mix a very small amount with their favorite cleanser. I routinely mix it with Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser when I only want light exfoliation, but I use it alone at least once or twice a week.

MyChelle Refining Sugar Cleanser ($19.00 for 2.3 oz, from MyChelleThrive Market and Kohl's): is a thick, dense and ultra-creamy exfoliating cleanser that leaves skin very clean, soft, smooth and hydrated. It is gentle, forms a creamy and satisfying lather, punctuated by small exfoliating particles, and it never strips the skin. Since it is dense and very thick, it takes a little bit of pressure to squeeze it out of the tube, but it is very concentrated– therefore, you need only a tiny amount to clean your face, neck and décolleté. It has the most delectable warm and creamy vanilla aroma that makes using this lovely cleanser specially satisfying. Additionally, the Hyaluronic Acid keeps skin hydrated and soft. MyChelle products are cruelty-free and this exfoliating cleanser is made without GMOs, Gluten, Parabens, Petroleum, Phthalates, Silicones, Sulfates, Ureas, artificial fragrances or artificial colors, and it’s vegan.

Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser ($42.00 for 1.7 oz. and $84.00 for 4.1 oz. from Tata Harper,  SephoraNordstromNet-A-PorterCult BeautyThe Detox MarketCredo Beauty and goop): is a truly fantastic cleanser that I have been using for quite a while now, and it remains one of my most reached-for wonder-products. I generally prefer lathering cleansers, but this one with its light creamy consistency, that is filled with gentle and refined exfoliating particles, is one of my all-time favorite cleansers. It gently exfoliates dead skin cells, unclogs congested pores and it hydrates, rather than strips and dries out the skin. Many moisturizing cleansers leave behind a greasy film, but this leaves behind no sort of unpleasant residue. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple and luminous. It has a very faint fruity aroma, presumably from the essential oils blend, but it is not in the least bit overpowering, and it does not linger.
According to Tata Harper,

This gentle exfoliating cleansing treatment acts as a 4-in-1 product to thoroughly cleanse and improve glow while purifying, minimizing the appearance of pores and helping to protect the skin’s natural hydration balance. Free of soaps, alcohols and detergents, this cleanser clarifies with fresh enzymes, clays and essential oils, while microspherical beads polish the skin and reduce appearance of blackheads – all without stripping the skin of moisture. Skin is left feeling balanced, hydrated and glowing. Minimizes the appearance of pores. Deeply cleanses and decongests the skin.

Tips from Tata Harper: Apply it on dry skin and massage into skin using circular motions, then focus on highly congested areas during a second buffing cleanse.
