Empties Post Volume XLI: February 2016

Press Sample/GWP/Purchased (Affiliate Links)

As you might recall, back in December I discovered that I would actually reach for largely used-up products if I placed them in on my bathroom counter and had to see them each day. It worked so well, in fact, that I did it in January and February, and will continue doing so. As a result of this new system, I managed to use up a nice pile of full size products in February. Here is what I used:

For the Face:

1) Koh Gen Do Pure Cotton Pads ($12.00 for a pack of 60 from Barneys New York, Nordstrom, B-Glowing and Sephora): Best invention since sliced bread, seriously! These are, hands down, the best cotton pads that I have ever used. They are soft and thick, and ultra effective.

Made from cotton that has not been chemically treated, bleached, or pigmented, these medical-grade cotton pads easily come apart in layers when wet, allowing more surface use when removing makeup or saturating it with a toner or skin lotion for a mini facial. The extra thickness and durability add a soft cushion for those with sensitive skin.

The cotton used for this product was raised without the use of chemical fertilizer or pesticides to ensure pure, safe, superb quality.

2) Burt's Bees Sensitive Facial Cleansing Towelettes ($5.99 from Drugstore.com, Walgreens, Ulta and Target): I am a huge proponent of cleansing towelettes, and I absolutely love the ones from Burt's Bees. These are super gentle on the skin and are perfect to remove makeup on those nights when you are too tired for your whole skincare routine. They are also my go-to during swatchfests since they are so gentle, and they remove every stitch of makeup without irritating my skin.

3) The Organic Pharmacy Antioxidant Face Firming Serum ($160.00 from Barneys New York and Selfridges. Reviewed HERE): I love this antioxidant-rich anti-aging oil so much that I have already purchased another one. First, it must be said that this beautiful oil has the intoxicating scent of Sweet Orange- therefore upon application you are assured of a magnificent and visceral sensory experience. This brilliant concoction boasts a high concentration of the powerful Alpha Lipoic Acid, a known powerful antioxidant, that helps to prevent cell damage by scavenging free-radicals. The high concentration of Rose Hip Oil is rich in transretinoic acid and essential fatty acids, and is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and also helps to reduce scarring over time. Sweet Orange helps prevent capillary fragility, and Carrots are rich in Beta Carotene (part of the Vitamin A family), and are rich antioxidants that protects the skin against free-radicals. Lemon (Citrus Limonum) lifts, tones and exfoliates the skin, and does so in an immediately visible way. This is also to say nothing of the fact that my skin is left soft, supple, and deeply moisturized and hydrated.

This combination of ingredients, along with those that I didn't enumerate, create a powerful cocktail that has visibly changed the texture and clarity of my skin. There is a notable lifting effect in that my expression lines are radically softened, and my skin has an unprecedented radiance and clarity. I would describe this oil as one that stimulates circulation because my skin has the type of radiance that is not superficial, but one instead that causes my skin to have a rosy radiance as though lit from within.

4) Reviva Labs Hyaluronic Acid Serum ($18.69-$21.99 from Ulta, Beauty Encounter and GNC. Reviewed HERE): Used alone the Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a fantastic moisture booster that can be used in conjunction with your daily moisturizer. It restores comfort and moisture to the skin while simultaneously plumping fine lines. The difference is quite remarkable.

5) Asbury Apothecary Gentle Exfoliating Facial Cream ($40.00 for 4 oz. Reviewed HERE): I am always on the lookout for great exfoliators to share with you, and now have another to add the list of worthy contenders. Asbury Apothecary Gentle Exfoliating Facial Cream is an exceedingly effective exfoliator that removes dead skin cells, unclogs congested pores, and leaves skin velvety soft, smooth and hydrated. It boasts a dense concentration of tiny exfoliating particles, and it is so effective that it requires only the very lightest hand to achieve outstanding results.

6) Bare Love Face Luxury Skin Fuel Night-Time Recovery Treatment ($58.00 from Birchbox. Reviewed HERE): It looks and feels like a gel, but behaves like an oil as it effortlessly melts into the skin. It has the intoxicating and delectable scent of Vanilla Planifolia that is both comforting and pleasant. As with all face oils, I massage this one into freshly cleaned skin that it still warm and damp. This not only assures that it penetrates deeper into the skin, but also is far more economical because this method requires far less product. While one pump is recommended, I find that I need far less for my face, neck and décolleté.

7) TATCHA Radiant Deep Brightening Serum ($ from TATCHA and Barneys New York. Reviewed HERE): This lovely serum hydrates and brightens the skin, and gives it an overall evenness in tone. I absolutely love this serum.

A hydrating, brightening serum powered by time-tested Asian botanicals to bring color clarity and radiance to the skin. Contains licorice root, jujuba, scutellaria and silk extracts as well as squalane and HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex, a proprietary blend of rice bran, green tea and red algae extract.

Formulated without mineral oil, synthetic color, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, PEGs, PPGs, urea, DEA, TEA or phthalates. Ideal for combination skin.

8) Radical Skincare Eye Revive Cream ($125.00 from Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Space NK, Skin StoreBloomingdale's and Harrods. Reviewed HERE): As I have said time and again- I am very discriminating when it comes to what I want and need in an eye cream. I want a deeply nourishing and hydrating eye cream that decreases the appearance of dark circles, that reduced puffiness on the days that I don't sleep enough, and that keeps fine lines at bay. To complicate my list of needs further, I prefer an eye cream lighter in texture that can stand up against the richest eye creams with respect to performance. I also don't want it to have petrolatum and mineral oil together at the top the the list of ingredients because that combination is the perfect storm for giving me milia.

Radical Skincare Eye Revive Cream leaves my delicate eye area nourished, moisturized, free of dark circles, free of puffiness, the skin is taut, the fine lines are radically reduced, and there is an unprecedented clarity. Furthermore, no milia whatsoever!

9) Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser ($26.00 from Sephora and Skin Store): I only had the one sample packet to try, but I managed to get several uses out of it and really liked it a lot. Enough, in fact, that I am contemplating buying a tube! I tried it will my FOREO LUNA and it worked wonderfully. It has a lovely creamy lather that isn't in the least bit drying!
For the Hair and Body:

10) Bodycology Moroccan Sunset Moisturizing Body Wash (Reviewed HERE): This is a non-stripping moisturizing cleanser that leaves the skin soft and thoroughly cleansed. It has a warm fruity floral scent that makes the whole bathroom smell great.

The sensual fragrance of sweet passionfruit and blooming hibiscus flowers leave you feeling exotic and inspired. Our ultra moisturizing body wash is formulated with Shea Butter & Vitamin E to keep skin feeling hydrated and irresistably smooth.

11) Maple Holistics Argan Special Formula Shampoo (Reviewed HERE): This is a very gentle moisturizing shampoo that thoroughly cleanses hair without stripping it, and without leaving a heavy greasy film behind. The blend of six oils used (Argan, Peach Kernel, Jojoba, Avocado, Camellia Seed and Almond) nourish, condition and moisturize the scalp and hair– leaving it manageable and tangle free. It has a subtle, light and warm scent that is a fusion of the six oils in conjunction with the honey and vanilla, but it isn't in the least overpowering. This nourishing formula is a good choice for all types of hair, and if is gentle enough for people with dry hair. My naturally curly hair is softer and is less prone to frizziness since I began using this shampoo and conditioner.

12) Maple Holistics Argan Conditioner (Reviewed HERE): This is an ultra-nourishing, yet lightweight, conditioner that leaves my hair soft, shiny, frizz-free, moisturized and manageable. It is one of those rare conditioners that permits me to comb my curly hair without the aid of additional products, and that is no small feat. It has a light and pleasant nondescript scent that does not linger, and therefore will not bother those sensitive to scents.

13 & 14) Fake Bake Mistifier Moisturizer Body Spray ($7.99 from Overstock.com. Reviewed HERE): Fake Bake Oil-Free Mistifier Moisturizer Body Spray is a very refreshing spray moisturizer, and while it is, in part, intended to be used to preserve tanning treatments (be it spray tans or real tans)-- I find that it does a stupendous job hydrating my skin during the warm weather. It is non-greasy and fast absorbing, but it is also fun to use. When you initially spray Mistifier it foams a bit and when the bubbles evaporate on the skin they have a refreshing cooling effect. I found that I had two half used cans in rotation, and managed to use up both this month.

15) Noodle & Boo Healthy Hand Wash ($12.00 from Beauty Encounter. Reviewed HERE): This is a very gentle soap-free hand wash that thoroughly cleans, but is so gentle that it never strips the skin. Hands are left luxuriously soft, supple and hydrated, and the delicate soft scent is subtle and barely-there.

Make good hygiene fun and help keep little ones germ-free and healthy. Soap-free formula is fortified with vitamins A, C and E, which nourish skin between washings.

16) Trader Joe's Lavender & Chamomile Hand Soap: This remains one of my very favorite hand soaps, and I can't recommend it highly enough! I buy them 4 at a time, and love that this soap leaves hands soft and supple instead of dry and chapped.

17) Molton Brown Suma Ginseng Body Wash ($30.00 from Molton BrownBarneys New YorkBeauty Expert, Beauty.com, Harrods, Skin Store, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor): This is a really lovely masculine woodsy scented body wash that is delightful to use.

18) evenhealy Sweet Blossom Hydrating Body Oil (Reviewed HERE): This is a deeply nourishing, immediately hydrating, and long-lasting moisturizer. My skin is left luxuriously soft and supple as well as silky smooth to the touch. Dry skin is quickly softened, soothed and hydrated– while the senses are treated to the gorgeous fresh scent. Furthermore, Sweet Blossom Hydrating Body Oil can be used as a massage oil and a scalp treatment oil. I love using it as a hand moisturizer underneath a heavy cream, and my chapped over-washed winter hands no longer look or feel dry or parched.

19) CapriClear 100% Coconut Oil Spray ($16.99-$19.99 from Walgreens and Drugstore.com. Reviewed HERE): This is a safe and effective spray oil that leaves my dry winter skin moisturized, soft and supple. I spray it on damp skin immediately following a shower and it makes my skin feel fantastic. On days when it is particularly cold I prefer to layer it under a rich cream or body butter, but generally it offers more than enough moisture. This is a really lovely moisturizer, however if you have a sensitivity or allergy to coconut in any form then this product should be strictly avoided.

What did you use up, give away, toss out, or return in February? Any winners or losers to report?

Reviva Labs: Top Pick Anti-Aging Skincare Power Brokers

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

I am always so impressed by Reviva Labs because they consistently make extraordinary quality skincare products at affordable prices. Having recently experienced a particularly high volume of emails asking for affordable anti-aging skincare product recommendations, it occurred to me that Reviva Labs has so many contenders that it warranted a dedicated post featuring some of my favorites.
1) 5% Glycolic Acid Cream ($25.00 for 1.5 oz. Reviva LabsUlta and Amazon): "Contains a unique polymer form of glycolic acid & hellip actual strands of glycolic that enter the skins own natural polymer structure. They penetrate more effectively to induce better exfoliation. The glycolic extract used in Reviva's Glycolic Acid Cream is full-strength glycolic crystals...100% glycolic extract...never diluted!"

One of the best ways to ensure the efficacy of your anti-aging products is to effectively exfoliate your skin to enable efficient absorption of your serums and creams. The Reviva Labs Glycolic Acid Cream comes in 5% and 10% solutions, but I would definitely suggest starting out with the 5% Glycolic Acid Cream until your skin acclimates to the added exfoliation. You may experience a little tingling as this potent cream gets to work, and I highly recommend patch testing it on your arm before applying it to your face. I definitely noticed a huge difference in my complexion from this powerful Glycolic Acid Cream, and noted that it left my skin remarkably smooth, even in tone and luminous. Reviva Labs suggests switching to day use after about a month, which I did, and it made a big difference in the overall clarity and luminosity of my complexion. I don't find that I need to use it all of the time, but instead on an as-needed basis.

Directions: Use at night for the first four weeks. Apply lightly, leave-on for one minute, apply moisturizer. After one month of nighttime applications, also apply in the morning, under daytime moisturizer. (If there is a stinging sensation, this is normal, apply a light moisturizer or night cream over the Glycolic Acid Cream.)

Ingredients: Purified water, 5% glycolic acid polymer (extracts of sugar and rhubarb), extracts of pumpkin, peach, sage, comfrey, chamomile, witch hazel, vitamins A,D,E, safflower oil, sunflower oil.

NOTE: Reviva Labs recommends patch testing for sensitivity on the underside of forearm before beginning treatment.
2) Nasolabial Fold Multi-Peptide Cream ($49.00 for 2 oz. from Reviva Labs and Amazon): This cream was expertly crafted to treat the pesky Nasolabial Folds (the deep lines that can form on the sides of the nose to the mouth), and while no cream can claim to physically remove deep lines in their entirety, Reviva Labs has done a remarkable job reducing their appearance.

In order to deliver tangible results, Reviva Labs suggests an easy to follow three step process featuring their 5% Glycolic Acid CreamNasolabial Fold Multi-Peptide Cream and their  mineral-rich Skin Energizing Gel  (or Hyaluronic Acid Serum or Collagen Serum).

Suggested Use

For Truly Deep Folds and Lines, Reviva Labs recommend using this 3-Step Layering Process:

First, you would apply Reviva’s mineral-rich Skin Energizing Gel (or Hyaluronic Acid Serum or Collagen Serum) all over face and jawline. Then follow by applying the Glycolic Acid Cream over the Gel or Serum.

Finally, apply their Nasolabial Fold Multi-Peptide Cream over the Glycolic Cream. It is important to remember to spread each product used from the point of application across the face to the cheek area and toward the ear on both sides of the face.

Reviva Labs underscored the fact that Nasolabial Folds are among topical skin care’s most difficult problems to address, and there is no quick fix. This is why they developed the three step process to bolster the efficacy of their new cream.

While I do not have Nasolabial Folds or deep lines near my mouth and jawline, I do have fine smile lines. While they aren't a point of concern for me yet, I did note that they were considerably softened when I used the 3-Step routine as suggested by Reviva Labs. This trio is definitely well worth trying if you have Nasolabial Folds or deep lines near your mouth and jawline.

Details about Nasolabial Folds and Deep Lines Near Mouth and Jawline: The skin “folds” that run from each side of the nose to corners of the mouth (called “Nasolabial Folds”) are commonly thought to be the result of years of facial movements like smiles, frowns and other expressions. But Reviva Labs and various medical experts agree that facial contractions are not the only cause. Aging and the loss of cheek fat is a major factor. The young face is full, with cheeks that have a “fat pad”. With age, the fat falls down toward the nose causing skin sag and folds. In addition, skin along the jawline drops (creating jowls) and skin towards edges of mouth loosens, forming lines or wrinkles.

What makes Nasolabial Fold Cream Different: Reviva’s original Peptide Cream was excellent for wrinkles. But the new formula features an advanced combination of peptides that address deeper wrinkles and so much more! Special new peptides and additional ingredients can help increase the volume of fatty tissue. Thus, it can soften, plump up and help folds look less pronounced.Result? A more youthful look. No skin cream can claim it can totally remove deep nasolabial folds, but now we can help reduce their appearance as well as other stubborn facial lines.

Directions: "On our Nasolabial Fold label and box, we don’t have room for full “Directions” details. So here’s our full recommendation.Morning and night, apply the cream on both sides of nose, cheeks, corners of mouth and near jaw.Now spread the cream, with middle fingers, in upward and outward brisk spreading movements towards the ear. Do one side at a time, left side with left hand fingers and right side with right hand fingers. Make sure you are spreading the cream from its starting point across the entire cheek area towards the ear."

Ingredients: Purified Water, Capric Caprylic Triglycerides, Sunflower Seed Oil, Matrixyl™
(Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4), Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Glycerin (veg.),
Adipofill’in™ (Propanediol (and) Ornithine (and) Phospholipids (and) Glycolipids), Progeline™
(Trifluoroacetyl Tripeptide-2), Syn-ake™ (Dipeptide Diaminobutytoyl Benzylamine Diacetate), Aloe
Leaf Juice, Shea Butter, Xantham Gum, Hyaluronic Acid, Soy Protein, Saccharomyces Lysate Extract,
Jojoba Seed Oil, Lecithin, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vit. C), Tocopherol Acetate, Panthenol,
Allantoin, Tocopherol (Vit. E), Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol.
3) Skin Energizing Gel ($11.00 for 2 oz. Reviva Labs and Amazon): Reviva Labs calls this "The Gel that makes creams come true" because it boosts the efficacy of your creams by helping them absorb more effectively and efficiently.  Furthermore, I would say that it deeply hydrates the skin and leaves skin luminous, soft and supple. In addition to adding this to my creams and lotions, I have added a small amount to my foundations, tinted moisturizers and BB and CC creams, and the result is a gorgeous dewy finish and added hydration.

According to Reviva Labs,

As skin ages and loses minerals, it may lose its ability to absorb the benefits of even the finest night creams. To help your night creams live up to their promise, Reviva offers Skin Energizing Gel, a pure "catalyst" concentrate of mineral-and vitamin-rich Hawaiian Seaplant. Use regularly for a noticeably soft, fresher and younger-looking complexion.

Directions: Apply at night on cleansed skin. Then apply your night cream over the gel. Creams applied over gel are better absorbed and more effective. If a slight seaplant residue occurs upon application, pat gently with moistened fingertip.

Ingredients: Purified water, algae extract (Hawaiian seaplant), phenoxyenthanol and chlorphenesin and sodium dehydroaceteate (preservative system).
4) High-Potency Elastin Serum ($27.00 for 1 oz. Reviva Labs and Amazon): Elastin, which allows the skin to, "stretch and retract, helps give skin bounce, elasticity and firmness." After the age of 25, skin "begins losing its supply of Elastin, aggravated by excess sun exposure, temperature extremes, stress, tobacco, alcohol, drying winds and more."

According to Reviva Labs, their  "Elastin Serum Concentrate feeds skin special quality Elastin to boost skin elasticity and firmness." This serum can be applied alone or it can be used under other creams. Reviva Labs alternating it with their DMAE Firming Fluid Serum to help fight sagging skin. They also suggest using their Elastic Serum on the backs of the hands to bolster elasticity.

If you only have a few lines, such as crows feet around the eyes, rather than a profusion of lines or wrinkles all over your face, then just spot treat with this serum. It has definitely softened the expression lines around my eyes.

Directions: Shake bottle before using. Pump small amount on fingers and pat or massage in lightly onto face and throat. Can be used alone or under active night creams. Alternate with DMAE Serum.

Ingredients: Demineralized Water, Elastin, Polysorbate 20, Hawaiian Seaweed Extract, Glycerine(veg.), Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate.
5) Collagen Serum ($25.00 for 1 0z. Reviva Labs and Amazon): An effective high quality Collagen Serum is a a wonderful type of product to add into your anti-aging beauty routine. Reviva Lab created one with a high percentage of soluble collagen that delivers deep hydration, plumps fine lines and smooths the overall appearance of the skin. I have used it alone, but prefer to apply it underneath my cream for best results.

According to Reviva Labs,

With a high percentage of soluble collagen to hydrate skin, our serum not only helps increase skin's moisture level, it helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. This easily absorbed serum features Collagen Concentrate that permeates deeper than cream to bind moisture and help improve the contours of facial skin. Regular usage alone or under supplementary creams (such as antioxidant, elastin or peptide creams) can help smooth severe as well as fine dry lines or help improve skin texture.

Collagen is skin’s primary component, as well as its most abundant. Our bodies produce less collagen as we age. Collagen is the skin’s support structure, responsible for strength and elasticity. Collagen and elastin work together to provide the structure of the skin, and contribute to its texture and appearance. Reviva Labs uses only high-potency collagen, which can assist to replenish the body’s collagen matrix.

Directions: Shake bottle before using. Pump small amount on fingers and pat or massage in lightly onto face and throat. Can be used alone or under active night creams. Use nightly every other week.

Ingredients: Demineralized Spring Water, Glycerin (Veg), Soluble Collagen, Hawaiian Seaweed Extract, Polysorbate 20, Citric Acid, Hydroxyehtylcellulose, Beta Carotene, Simethicone, Potassium Sorbate & Sodium Benzoate (Preservatives).
6) Collagen Night Cream ($14.00 for 1.5 oz. Reviva Labs and Amazon): Collagen Night Cream was created for normal to dry skin types, but works beautifully on my combination skin. It is a really wonderful fast absorbing night cream that delivers serious moisture to the skin, but it also softens fine lines and promotes enhanced firmness. It feels so good on the skin, and when I wake up my skin looks softer and more youthful.

According to Reviva Labs,

High potency collagen extract helps skin gain & retain moisture. Fights lines. Helps to achieve the moisture nourishment needed for firmness. Collagen is skin’s primary component, as well as its most abundant. Our bodies produce less collagen as we age. Collagen is the skin’s support structure, responsible for strength and elasticity. Collagen and elastin work together to provide the structure of the skin, and contribute to its texture and appearance. Promotes Exceptional Skin Moisture and Firmness. Reviva Labs uses only high-potency collagen, which can assist to replenish the body’s collagen matrix.

Directions: Massage into skin at night 2 weeks Collagen, 2 weeks Elastin & DMAE Cream. Use this 4-week program every 3 months to alternate with our newer advances in skin care.
Skin elasticity needs collagen's moisture control to supplement Elastin's firming action. Reviva Labs recommends that you alternate Collagen Night Cream With their Elastin & DMAE Night Cream.

Ingredients: Demineralized Water, Vegetable Oil, Stearic Acid, Soluble Collagen, Glycerin (Veg.), Lanolin, Beeswax, Citric Acid, Egg Protein Concentrate, 9-Oil Blend (Almond, Sesame, Avocado, Wheat Germ, Olive, Peanut, Sunflower, Safflower & Apricot Kernel Oils), Vitamins A, D & E, Multi Sterol Extracts: Mallow, Ivy, Cucumber, Sambucus & Arnica, Sodium Borate, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Simethicone.
7) Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester & DMAE Cream ($23.00 for 2 oz. Reviva Labs, Ulta and Amazon): According to Reviva Labs, they now offer "a new answer to helping firm, tighten and "lift" skin with DMAE...as Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vitamin C Ester fight free radicals and future skin aging….This dramatic trio is encased in a soy liposome for deeper, time release action during the night. Allantoin and Aloe Vera are added to soothe and calm stressed skin, contributing to a healthy, vibrant glow." Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin C Ester & DMAE Cream was developed to help "improve skin tone and glow as its powerful antioxidant action fights free-radical damage. As your body rests during the night, you have hours of uninterrupted replenishing nutrients that help tighten and "lift" skin to treat the effects of time as it helps fight future skin aging."

I absolutely love this cream, and I mean love it! It is fast absorbing and deeply moisturizing and nourishing. It soothes irritated skin, boosts hydration, and gives the skin a gorgeous luminous glow. I apply it to my face, neck and décolleté at night and when I wake up the next day my skin looks soft, supple, balanced and dewy fresh. It's hard to fathom that a product this effective costs only $23.00!

Directions: Use at night. Apply lightly over entire face & throat. (Massage in with upward movements).

Key Ingredients and their Attributes:

Alpha Lipoic AcidAn advanced antioxidant that fights free radicals, Alpha Lipoic Acid is an important component in our anti-aging products. Free radicals are the result of oxidation, a naturally-occurring side effect of cellular metabolism in the body, and are believed to destroy tissue on the cellular level through a destabilizing chain reaction – accelerating the aging process. Free radicals occur naturally, but exposure to harmful environmental factors, such as pollution, sun exposure, or lifestyle conditions such as smoking cigarettes, can increase their production. Antioxidants such as Alpha Lipoic Acid bind to these free radicals helping to inhibit their spread. Alpha Lipoic Acid is unique since it’s an antioxidant and it also assists the body’s production of Vitamin C, one of our naturally-occurring antioxidants.

Benefits:
• Improves the appearance of skin tone and texture by fighting the free-radical damage that can leave skin looking dull
• Reduces the appearance of puffiness by regulating the production of nitric oxide, which controls blood flow to the skin
• Decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by improving the overall health of the skin

DMAEDimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) is often called “facelift in a jar” by skin care specialists, because it helps firm and tighten the skin. With regular use DMAE will give skin a more defined, youthful appearance. DMAE, a component of cell membranes, is also one of the substances used by the body to make the neurotransmitter molecule acetylcholine. DMAE’s firming effects are believed to involve the signaling of acetylcholine in the skin.

Soy: Soy benefits the skin by providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection. Studies have shown that a component of soy, known as genistein, has a collagen-stimulating effect. Other compounds found in soy have been linked to increased skin thickness and elasticity. Soy extracts are shown to produce amazing skin rejuvenating benefits externally as well as internally.

Formulated exclusively with five elements (Isoflavones, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, carbohydrates polymers and mucopolysaccharides), Reviva Labs'soy extract promotes balance within skin cells. This helps cells to emerge better moisturized, and therefore, with a more uniform, smoother-looking skin appearance.

• Antioxidant benefits combat free radicals
• Skin elasticity is improved

Vitamin C EsterVitamin C Ester (ascorbyl palmitate) provides protective antioxidant action, and helps repair past skin damage by promoting new collagen production. Vitamin C Ester provides multiple benefits: improving skin texture, maintaining skin firmness and tone, and improving skin radiance.

Ingredients: Demineralized Spring Water, Glyceryl Stearate, Soybean Oil, Stearyl Stearate, Vegetable Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Soy Phospholipid Liposome Gel, Alpha lipoic Acid, DMAE Bitartrate, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vit. C Ester), Whole Wheat Protein, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit. E), Retinyl Palmitate (Vit. A), Ergocalciferol (Vit. D), Aloe Vera Gel, Allantoin, Polysorbate 20, Simethicone, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid.

Overall Assessment: Reviva Labs has been a trusted skincare since 1973 for good reason. They create highly effective products that live up to their claims, that utilize the best ingredients, and that deliver real results at affordable prices. I have used many of their products, and I have never been disappointed. Their anti-aging products are amazing and well worth trying without guilt since they won't break the bank.

Empties Post Volume XXVI: October 2014 Edition

Press Samples and Purchase by Me (Unaffiliated Links)

I had a truly wretched bug during the first half of October, and as a result I sought to use up samples and mostly empty products in an effort to avoid infecting anything else. Product testing came to a screeching halt, and I didn't wear any makeup for the duration of my flu. Therefore, what you see was either nearly gone to begin with, or that I wasn't likely to infect. When it came to washing my face I used samples in order to keep my germy fingers out of my regular sized products.

Red Flower Moisturizing Body Lotion Blood Orange: I love this lotion so much because it imparts the perfect amount of moisture to the skin and the Blood Orange scent is intoxicatingly delicious!

Rituals Magic Touch Cherry Blossom & Rice Milk Whipped Body Cream: This is an utterly amazing body cream! The whipped texture feels amazing to the touch, and this baby really nourishes the skin leaving it unbelievably soft, supple and silky. The scent is sweet and very pleasing.

Rituals Zensation Organic Rice Milk & Cherry Blossom Foaming Shower Gel (Reviewed here): Rituals makes truly amazing body products, and their Foaming Shower Gels are absolutely wonderful! Not only does this cleanse the skin beautiful, and leave it silky smooth and moisturized, but it also doubles as an amazing shaving cream!

Caress Aqua Sparkle Body Wash (Reviewed here): I really liked this body wash because it smells delicious and does a nice job cleaning the skin without stripping it. I already have a replacement!

Caress Aqua Emerald Rush Body Wash (Reviewed here): I loved the smell! Like the Sparkle Body Wash, I already have a replacement!

Udderly Smooth Body Cream (Reviewed here): This is a very rich moisturizing cream, and my husband used it up!

Udderly Smooth Shea Butter Foot Cream (Reviewed here): I love slathering this on my feet at night and wearing cozy socks, and when I wake up my feet are so soft!

Christine Reconstructive Conditioner (Reviewed here): This is such a nourishing conditioner! It leaves my hair silky smooth, detangled, and shiny!

DermOrganic Texture Taffy (Reviewed here): DermOrganic makes amazing haircare products, and their Texture Taffy holds hair in place beautifully!

Philip B. Forever Shine Shampoo: I love Philip B. haircare products, and have used many of them. This definitely seems like a very nice shampoo. My favorite shampoo from the line is their White Truffle Ultra-Rich Moisturizing Shampoo-- it is so luxurious and decadent, and works wonders on my naturally curly hair!

Kiss My Face Cucumber Green Tea Natural Active Life Deodorant: I have repurchased this deodorant so many times, and need to pick up another next time I go to Whole Foods. I love this stuff!

Natural Style Moisture Shine Deep Conditioner & Co-wash packets: This seems nice, but sample packets don't tend to give me enough time with a product to be able to tell whether or not it will work for me.

Molton Brown Orange and Bergamot Body Wash: Simply delectable. I need a big bottle of this in my life!

Moroccanoil Hand Cream and Body Souffle Samples: Very nice products, but the samples didn't allow me to use them long enough to really see their effects. I definitely want to investigate their new line of body products further.
Sponge Krema Triantafillo (Rose and Sage Cream) (Reviewed here): This is a nourishing and healing cream that feels amazing on the skin-- I whimpered when I finished this bottle, and will eventually replace it!

Sponge Ladi Avokanto (Reviewed here): This is a gorgeous olive oil and avocado based beauty oil that feels amazing on the skin, and it leaves it nourished, hydrated and glowing!

The Organic Pharmacy Virgin Cold Pressed Rose Hip Oil (Reviewed here): The Organic Pharmacy remains one of my very favorite lines, and their beauty oils are amazing! If you are looking for a great cold pressed Rose Hip oil-- this is definitely one to consider!

Caudalie Makeup Remover Cleansing Water: This is a nice cleansing water, but I do wish that it contained less fragrance.

Radical Skincare Anti-Aging Replenishing Extreme Moisture (Reviewed here): This is definitely one of my favorite face creams, and it will definitely be getting plenty of use now that the weather is cooling down!

Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask: This is a really nice exfoliating mask, but the sample only allowed for a single use, and therefore I didn't use it long enough to say more than that.

Arcona Overnight Cellular Repair Complex: I didn't use this long enough to review it, since it is a deluxe sample, but I used it long enough to see that it is an excellent overnight repair cream! I want a full sized jar now!

Kate Somerville Exfolikate (Reviewed here): Seriously amazing scrub, and I can't imagine ever being without a tube!

Lab Sample from Painted Earth Cosmetics: Absolutely amazing beauty oil, and I can't wait to try the finalized version!

TATCHA POLISHED Classic Rice Enzyme Powder (14 packets!) (Reviewed here): A Classic, indeed. This amazing powder leaves skin baby's bottom soft, and effectively whisks away dead skin cells! I will buy this over and over again! This is one of the only things that made me feel semi-human when I had the flu, and I used up my travel packets to keep my germy hands off of my full-size jar!

Reviva Labs Microdermabrasion Pomegranate Scrub (Reviewed here): This is a highly effective, and also very affordable, scrub that really transforms the skin from dull to luminescent in no time at all. It is also wonderful when used on the body!
Shu Uemura Lip Pencil: This lip liner appears to have been discontinued long ago, but it was wonderful down to the last bit. Thankfully I have a full unused backup that I just opened, and will savor to that last use!

Tweezerman Eyenhance Brow Definer and Highlighter Duo (Reviewed here): This was a really nice definer and highlighter, and once I run out of what I have I will likely seek this one out again!

What did you finish up, throw away, give away, or return in September? Did you make any new skincare or makeup discoveries that have you smitten? Any duds never again to be repurchased?

Reviva Labs Alpha Lipoic Acid Vitamin C Ester & DMAE Cream Review

Press Sample (Unaffiliated Links)

After having received numerous emails from readers seeking affordable, yet very high quality, anti-aging creams I knew just what to feature: Reviva Labs Alpha Lipoic Acid Vitamin C Ester & DMAE Cream! It is a lightweight and fast absorbing cream that calms, nourishes, hydrates, lifts, tightens, protects, and fights free radicals.

Reviva Labs now offers a new answer to helping firm, tighten and "lift" skin with DMAE...as Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vitamin C Ester fight free radicals and future skin aging. As a special Reviva boost, this dramatic trio is encased in a soy liposome for deeper, time release action during the night. Allantoin and Aloe Vera are added to soothe and calm stressed skin, contributing to a healthy, vibrant glow. For supple, more youthful looking skin, it's another major advance in the battle against skin aging. Benefits: helps improve skin tone and glow as its powerful antioxidant action fights free-radical damage. As your body rests during the night, you have hours of uninterrupted replenishing nutrients that help tighten and "lift" skin to treat the effects of time as it helps fight future skin aging.
My experience: Don't let the lightweight texture let you think that this isn't a heavyweight contender in the realm of effective antioxidant rich anti-aging creams. I find this to be one very effective cream that I use exclusively at night, but if I had drier skin rather than combination skin I would probably also use it during the day over my serum and under my sunscreen. When I apply it at night it sinks in immediately leaving behind no unpleasant greasy residue, and in the morning when I wake up my skin is hydrated, fine lines are diminished, and the overall texture of my skin is more smooth and firm. After use my skin has a pronounced clarity and appears more radiant.

It is my experience that Reviva Labs tends to understate their claims, and their products consistently exceed my expectations. They make top quality products at affordable prices, and they don't waste your hard earned dollars on fancy packaging filled with mediocre quality products. You really get so much more than you pay for, and their Alpha Lipoic Acid Vitamin C Ester & DMAE Cream is but one masterpiece in their arsenal of superb skincare products.
Key Ingredients & Functionality:

Alpha Lipoic Acid: An advanced antioxidant that fights free radicals, Alpha Lipoic Acid is an important component in our anti-aging products.

Benefits of Alpha Lipoic Acid:
• Improves the appearance of skin tone and texture by fighting the free-radical damage that can leave skin looking dull
• Reduces the appearance of puffiness by regulating the production of nitric oxide, which controls blood flow to the skin
• Decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by improving the overall health of the skin

Vitamin C Ester: Vitamin C Ester (ascorbyl palmitate) provides protective antioxidant action, and helps repair past skin damage by promoting new collagen production. Vitamin C Ester provides multiple benefits: improving skin texture, maintaining skin firmness and tone, and improving skin radiance.

DMAE: Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) is often called “facelift in a jar” by skin care specialists, because it helps firm and tighten the skin.

Ingredients: Demineralized Spring Water, Glyceryl Stearate, Soybean Oil, Stearyl Stearate, Vegetable Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Soy Phospholipid Liposome Gel, Alpha lipoic Acid, DMAE Bitartrate, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vit. D), Aloe Vera Gel, Allantoin, Polysorbate 20, Simethicone, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid.
Overall assessment: A lovely anti-aging free radical fighter at an affordable price! This is proof positive that you don't have to spend a fortune to get real results. It is well worth your consideration, but not if you are allergic to soy or wheat-- in which case you should consider one of their other face creams instead.

Reviva Labs DMAE & Alpha Lipoic Acid & Vitamin C Ester Firming Eye Serum Review

Press Sample

I am forever on the lookout for lightweight and fast absorbing eye creams that moisturize and hydrate, but I am always apprehensive that each new eye cream that I try will give me milia. I do my best to avoid ultra rich eye creams that contain comedogenic ingredients for this very reason. DMAE & Alpha Lipoic Acid & Vitamin C Ester Firming Eye Serum did not give me milia, and it did wonders for my delicate eye area!

Reduce the appearance of eye-area wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles as you protect against future signs of aging. Our new Firming Eye Serum, with its special base and precise blending, penetrates the thin skin around eyes for quick absorption.
  • DMAE, Alpha Lipoic Acid & Wheat Protein help firm & fight bags, puffiness.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid & Vitamin C Ester help protect and nourish. Mulberry and Lime lighten dark circles.
  • Hyaluronic Acid & Allantoin, in a unique blending, moisturize and texturizes area

Directions: "Use morning or night, under make-up or alone. Apply a small amount with gentle tapping motions...under the eye from out corner to inner, and then over the eyelid in an oval pattern. Repeat movements 5 times around each eye."
My experience: I am elated that DMAE & Alpha Lipoic Acid & Vitamin C Ester Firming Eye Serum actually does exactly what it claims to do! The DMAE, Alpha Lipoic Acid & Wheat Protein do wonders in their ability to firm the delicate eye area, while simultaneously reducing puffiness and fighting bags. While my dark circles weren't erased, they were lightened by the Mulberry and Lime as promised. I am astounded by the level of hydration that this unassuming workhorse delivers as a result of Reviva Labs unique blend of Hyaluronic Acid & Allantoin, and for me the results last all day long. Among the unique attributes of this eye serum is its ability to be used on the eye lids as well as beneath the eyes, and this point should be underscored. While I don't have crepy eyelids, those who do will find a notable lifting and smoothing of the delicate eye area, and users with crepy eyes have reported a miraculous smoothing of that skin. I find that the lifting and tightening effects make my eyes look remarkably smooth, and my fine lines are plumped. My eyes look luminous and hydrated whenever I use this-- which is quite often! This serum does so much for my skin that I don't need to use an additional eye cream when I use it!

Ingredients: Demineralized spring water, olive oil, cyclomethicone, whole wheat protein, DMAE bitartrate, mulberry extract, lime extract, alpha lipoic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, hyaluronic acid, allantoin, xanthan gum, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth 20, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate and citric acid.

Overall assessment: Not only is this a highly effective moisturizing serum, but it is actually affordable. This product is so effective that it has me scratching my head and wondering why I have spent so much money on eye creams over the years that didn't do nearly as much for my eyes as DMAE & Alpha Lipoic Acid & Vitamin C Ester Firming Eye Serum has.

Dehydrated or Dry Skin? Reviva Labs Dynamic Duo: Hyaluronic Acid Serum & InterCell Night Gel with Hyaluronic Acid to the Rescue: Review

Press Samples
Reviva Labs continues to amaze me with their extraordinarily high quality skincare products at very affordable prices. Their products have earned pride of place in my skincare stash, and remain part of my core highly loved skincare regimen. Recently I was thinking about products that are perfect during seasonal extremes in temperature, and I had an "Aha moment"- why not test drive Reviva Labs Hyaluronic Acid Serum in the mornings and their InterCell Hyaluronic Acid Night Gel in the evenings to see if there would be a discernible difference in the hydration level of my skin, and as I suspected there was! While I have combination skin, during extreme temperatures my skin has been known to become dehydrated. Therefore, it was during one such episode that I put these two Hyaluronic based products to the test to see if they would do the trick.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum (1 oz. $22.00) "Our highest-potency daily moisture booster! Reviva Labs has now compounded a higher level of premium Hyaluronic Acid into a precious fluid that can help raise skin's moisture level to fill-in furrows, plump up tissues and tone-down lines. Apply under creams in the evening or alone to hydrate skin. If also seeking firmness, alternate with our DMAE Firming Fluid. Benefits: Unlike products that depend on moisture in the air, HA can help hydrate skin even in dry climates or heated rooms that rob skin of moisture."

Ingredients: Demineralized spring water, Glycerin (veg.), Hyaluronic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Hydrolyzed Mucopolysaccharides, Green Tea Extract, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Simethicone, Caramelized Sugar, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid.
InterCell Night Gel with Hyaluronic Acid (1.25 oz $14.00 Sale price)

It has long been thought that if we could strengthen the intercellular "gel" that surrounds epidermal cells, we would have a breakthrough in contending with dryness and wrinkles. Too, cosmetic science has learned it is possible to fight external "free radical" damage - a major cause of the visual signs of aging. Unscented InterCell's clear gel supplies two vital ingredients to combat these problems. First, InterCell adds hyaluronic acid, skin's own intercellular substance naturally. Second, InterCell incorporates natural cell-protective glycogen to help block "free radical" damage from environmental pollution and sun exposure. Third, unlike other night products that add moisture to the skin, InterCell can add moisture even in the driest climates. It works with the liquids you drink. For optimal results, drink 6-8 glasses of liquids a day. Even in very dry climates, InterCell helps skin gain and retain moisture. InterCell, via its hyaluronic acid, works to help skin retain moisture from the liquids you drink. Frequent use helps avoid dry looking, brittle or flaky skin.

Directions: "At night, massage a small amount into cleansed skin, all over face and throat. InterCell works with daily fluid intake to bind and hold moisture in skin. We suggest drinking 6-8 glasses of liquids per day. (Because InterCell is so light and quickly absorbed, another cream can be applied over it for synergistic action.)"

Ingredients: Purified Water, Sorbitol, Hyaluronic Acid, Carbomer 940, Glycogen, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid.
My experience: While I conducted my experiment by using these two products daily for a period of several weeks, I did notice a significant increase in hydration. In the spirit of full disclosure, I did not always drink the suggested 6-8 glasses of water- though I did try. I also did not use these in conjunction with the other suggested products. Instead, I just used whatever other products I felt like using, and drank extra water when I wanted to. The only constant in my experiment was faithfully using these two products daily. The result was proof positive that using high quality Hyaluronic Acid based products day and night really did wonders to rehydrate my dehydrated skin.

Used alone the Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a fantastic moisture booster that can be used in conjunction with your daily moisturizer. Using the InterCell Night Gel with Hyaluronic Acid alone will do wonders for restoring hydration to your skin while you sleep. The combination of the two will make a profound difference in seasonal fluctuations in temperature that can wreak havoc on the skin. For somebody like me, who has combination skin, it can be used as needed. People with oilier skin would probably benefit from this combination periodically as well. However, people who regularly experience dehydrated, dry or flaky skin will likely find this combination makes a remarkable difference in their skin with regular use. It restores comfort and moisture to the skin while simultaneously plumping fine lines. The difference is quite remarkable.
Overall assessment: Quite the dynamic duo for dehydrated skin, dry skin, or skin that is lackluster and just needs a little boost in hydration!
