I had a truly wretched bug during the first half of October, and as a result I sought to use up samples and mostly empty products in an effort to avoid infecting anything else. Product testing came to a screeching halt, and I didn't wear any makeup for the duration of my flu. Therefore, what you see was either nearly gone to begin with, or that I wasn't likely to infect. When it came to washing my face I used samples in order to keep my germy fingers out of my regular sized products.

Kiss My Face Cucumber Green Tea Natural Active Life Deodorant: I have repurchased this deodorant so many times, and need to pick up another next time I go to Whole Foods. I love this stuff!

Natural Style Moisture Shine Deep Conditioner & Co-wash packets: This seems nice, but sample packets don't tend to give me enough time with a product to be able to tell whether or not it will work for me. 

Molton Brown Orange and Bergamot Body Wash: Simply delectable. I need a big bottle of this in my life!

Moroccanoil Hand Cream and Body Souffle Samples: Very nice products, but the samples didn't allow me to use them long enough to really see their effects. I definitely want to investigate their new line of body products further.

Sponge Krema Triantafillo (Rose and Sage Cream) (Reviewed here): This is a nourishing and healing cream that feels amazing on the skin-- I whimpered when I finished this bottle, and will eventually replace it!

Sponge Ladi Avokanto (Reviewed here): This is a gorgeous olive oil and avocado based beauty oil that feels amazing on the skin, and it leaves it nourished, hydrated and glowing!

The Organic Pharmacy Virgin Cold Pressed Rose Hip Oil (Reviewed here): The Organic Pharmacy remains one of my very favorite lines, and their beauty oils are amazing! If you are looking for a great cold pressed Rose Hip oil-- this is definitely one to consider!

Caudalie Makeup Remover Cleansing Water: This is a nice cleansing water, but I do wish that it contained less fragrance.

Radical Skincare Anti-Aging Replenishing Extreme Moisture (Reviewed here): This is definitely one of my favorite face creams, and it will definitely be getting plenty of use now that the weather is cooling down!

Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask: This is a really nice exfoliating mask, but the sample only allowed for a single use, and therefore I didn't use it long enough to say more than that.

Arcona Overnight Cellular Repair Complex: I didn't use this long enough to review it, since it is a deluxe sample, but I used it long enough to see that it is an excellent overnight repair cream! I want a full sized jar now!

Kate Somerville Exfolikate (Reviewed here): Seriously amazing scrub, and I can't imagine ever being without a tube!

Lab Sample from Painted Earth Cosmetics: Absolutely amazing beauty oil, and I can't wait to try the finalized version!

TATCHA POLISHED Classic Rice Enzyme Powder (14 packets!) (Reviewed here): A Classic, indeed. This amazing powder leaves skin baby's bottom soft, and effectively whisks away dead skin cells! I will buy this over and over again! This is one of the only things that made me feel semi-human when I had the flu, and I used up my travel packets to keep my germy hands off of my full-size jar!

Reviva Labs Microdermabrasion Pomegranate Scrub (Reviewed here): This is a highly effective, and also very affordable, scrub that really transforms the skin from dull to luminescent in no time at all. It is also wonderful when used on the body!

Shu Uemura Lip Pencil: This lip liner appears to have been discontinued long ago, but it was wonderful down to the last bit. Thankfully I have a full unused backup that I just opened, and will savor to that last use!

Tweezerman Eyenhance Brow Definer and Highlighter Duo (Reviewed here): This was a really nice definer and highlighter, and once I run out of what I have I will likely seek this one out again!

In the spirit of the season many of us are wearing richly pigmented lipsticks, and continued wear can certainly wreak havoc on the lips, particularly so when coupled with the colder weather. When I apply it before going to bed I really notice how soft, supple and plumped my lips are when I wake up. New Phase Anti-Aging Lip Balm contains Matrixyl 3000, a potent anti-aging ingredient that is used in many skincare products, to help stave off the ravages of time.

This delicious lip balm as taken up residence in my purse because it is so wonderfully moisturizing, and  fuss free. It leaves my lips deeply hydrated, soft, supple, and lipstick ready. It is wonderful worn alone, or as a lipstick base.

Overall Assessment: I have yet to be disappointed by Painted Earth products. In fact, the longer I use their products the more that I love this wonderful line. These three products get so much use that I predict that I will have to replace all of them in a few months.

A Fitting Tribute to Oscar de la Renta from Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills

Diane Von Furstenberg stated that her good friend, Oscar de la Renta, "made women feel like flowers."  This lovely quote has been in my mind since his passing, and I found it apropos that Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills adorned their main Wilshire Boulevard window with his iconic signature and an elegant bouquet.

Tom Ford Beauty Lip Color Matte Swatches and Dupes!

Yesterday I spend some time playing at the Tom Ford counter at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills with my friend, and counter manager, Michelle Weinstein. As we were discussing all of the beautiful new Lip Color Mattes we started to ponder the similarities between some of the shades from the new matte line with the core Lip Color line, and as it turns out four out of the eight new matte shades have close counterparts in the core line. The closeness in hue, however, is where the similarities end since the mattes have a decidedly more velvet matte finish.

If you have an aversion to matte lipsticks there is an alternative for you, but let it be said, and this point cannot be sufficiently underscored, that Tom Ford Lip Color Matte lipsticks are an altogether new species of matte lipsticks. These are not the moisture depleting mattes of yesterday that will leave your lips war-torn. You will still want to prep your lips, and if your lips are naturally prone to being dry-- then you will likely want a nice moisturizing base.

You will note from these swatches that Tom Ford's permutation of a matte lipstick definitely has some sheen, but make no mistake about it these refined sparkling gems are very long-wearing and richly pigmented. An in-depth review of my collection of mattes is forthcoming.

It was such a stunningly beautiful day in Beverly Hills, and the light was so perfect, that I took lots of pictures in an effort to give you a very realistic view of both the colors and finishes of these shockingly gorgeous lipsticks.

The richness of these colors translates to serious opacity in a single swipe.

First Time (Limited Edition) is close in hue to Blush Nude or perhaps closer yet if Blush Nude and Spanish Pink had a baby. Of the four shades First Time differs the most from the suggested dupes from the core Lip Color Line.

Pussycat has a touch more purple than Casablanca, but they are quite comparable in hue.

Flame is a touch more orange than Wild Ginger, but they are very closely related shades.

Plum Lush is a touch less purple than Violet Fatale, but they are closely enough related that your selection should be based less upon hue, and more upon the desired finish.

Black Dahlia (Limited Edition) and Bruised Plum are very close, but there is a certain intensity in the blackened base that one finds in Black Dahlia that does not exist in Bruised Plum.

For vampy lip enthusiasts who have a nearly irrational penchant for Tom Ford lipsticks, then you will appreciate seeing Tom Ford Black Orchid (a mythical beauty) juxtaposed to Black Dahlia and Bruised Plum. These are three of the most sublime vampy shades ever created.

As you can see Black Dahlia is essentially a more matte version of Black Orchid, and Bruised Plum is a slightly less intense version of both. If you continue to mourn having missed out on Black Orchid, then I think that you will likely be more satisfied with Black Dahlia than with Bruised Plum. Additionally, if vampy is where your lipstick passions reside, then get Black Dahlia before it is gone since it is one of the two Limited Edition Lip Color Mattes (First Time is the other).

You will note that the mattes do possess a lovely sheen, though decidedly less shimmering than the Lip Color formula.

Modulating the exposure to the sum reveals the base colors more readily, as can be seen in the swatches below.

You really can't go wrong with either formula, and it will likely come down to a preference in the finish. That said, if chronically dry lips plague you, you will likely find solace in the core Lip Color line.

UPDATE: wefadetogray wanted to know if Ruby Rush is a blue-based red, and it is. but it is visually modified when swatched next to Flame (a decidedly bright orange). Ruby Rush is a cool red with pink undertones as you can see from the swatch below.

Vilu is sheer purple plum with shimmer, but on the lips it is a more sheer shimmering shade. It does not have the same properties of a liquid lipstick, unlike Shimmer of Hope and Butter Cream, but it possesses the same longevity. Carisa Janes is the Founder and CEO of Hourglass, which she launched in 2004 as a next generation luxury beauty brand. Throughout her career Ms. Janes has displayed an unwavering commitment to developing groundbreaking cosmetic products. Her efforts to create cutting-edge formulations and packaging have positioned Hourglass as an innovator in the prestige beauty category.

Ms. Janes entered the beauty industry almost two decades ago after attending Parsons School of Design in New York. As an original member of Urban Decay’s creative team in 1996, she helped cultivate the now iconic brand.
