Now that summer is here, it is time to check your old sunscreens to see if they have expired, and to buy new ones if they have. If you are looking for excellent cruelty-free sunscreens, then I definitely recommend taking a look at Thinksport. These sunscreens offer excellent sun protection, but only when we reapply them frequently and remember not to stay in the baking hot sun for too long. Of course, avoiding excessive sun exposure and staying hydrated will go a long way in keeping you protected, coupled with frequent high SPF sunscreen reapplication. I also tend to go see my doctor to have my moles evaluated before I hang out in the sun during the summer months, and this is a good practice to catch pre-skin cancer, skin cancer and melanoma early. Here are two Thinksport sunscreens that I have in my current sunscreen rotation:
Thinksport Sunscreen SPF 30 Aloe & Tea Leaves ($13.49 for 3 oz. from Thinksport): This reef-safe and cruelty-free mineral sunscreen is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and it offers broad spectrum protection. It absorbs and applies very easily and it doesn't leave behind a greasy film. The white residue soaks into the skin, and the pleasant aroma smells like summertime.
According to Thinksport,
Reef-safe and dermatologist recommended, our mineral sunscreen works to keep skin protected. This virtually clear and non-oily scientifically formulated eco-friendly sunscreen is infused with Non-Nano mineral Zinc Oxide to help shield skin from harmful UVA/UVB sun rays.
Features:

Thinksport Safe Sunscreen SPF 50 ($14.49 for 3 oz. from Thinksport): This cruelty-free mineral sunscreen, for the face and body, was created for athletes and active outdoor activities. It is fast absorbing, non-greasy and leaves behind no greasy or white residue. This is great for going to the beach, exercising outdoors and playing at the pool. There is a very light and sweet aroma that disappears quickly.

This summer I used lots of sunscreen, and mostly doing work in the yard, and then relaxing and enjoying all of the birds and squirrels feasting.
One of my very favorite sunscreens, with its ultra-luxe and divine texture, and its nourishing skincare ingredients is unquestionably Kerstin Florian Multi-Vitamin Day Creme SPF 30. This day cream is richly emollient, seriously moisturizing, and fast absorbing. It applies evenly, it melts into the skin immediately, and it neither leaves behind a greasy film, nor does it leave an undesirable white cast. Furthermore, the antioxidant-rich formula protects the skin while its active botanicals, and other nourishing ingredients, leave skin soft, smooth, supple and luminous. It is the height of luxury given its glorious velvety texture, its impressive efficacy and its enviable ability to play well with makeup. In fact, I have found that it serves as a wonderfully effective primer for all of the foundations that I have paired it with. It has a delectable light and clean aroma, but it fades soon upon application.
According to Kerstin Florian,
High-performance, anti-aging skincare meets powerful, natural sun protection in this nutrient-rich daily moisturizer. Antioxidants and active botanicals combine with mineral-based broad-spectrum sunscreen to leave skin hydrated, protected and luminous.

Overall Assessment: I will definitely buy another tube once I finish this one!
If you are anything like me, and you plan to spend your last weekend of summer enjoying the outdoors– then here are a few things to remember.
1) Make sure to have plenty of high SPF sunscreen on hand, and be sure to reapply it frequently. It might be worth using an SPF that is water-resistant or waterproof if you will be swimming, or sweating a lot in the hot sun.
2) Remember a wide-brim hat and sunglasses to give yourself more protection from the sun.
3) Consider UV protected clothing. SPF/UPF garments will bolster your SPF protection– and they are particularly useful if you will be outdoors for long periods of time.
4) If you are going to be celebrating Labor Day in an area with mosquitoes, then you might consider a good bug spray. I reach for DEET-free, water-resistant and non-flammable varieties.
5) Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated!
6) Consider using a hyaluronic serum before you leave the house to add, and retain, hydration to your skin.
7) If you are going somewhere like the beach or a park, and you will be in an area without shade, then it is worth investing in a portable beach umbrella– you will be glad that you did!
This is undoubtedly the time of year when we tend to spend a great deal more time outside, and as a result we often inadvertently overwork and under-protect our bodies and skin. Here are a few things that I have been trying to do to take better care of my skin this time of year:
1)Avoid overexposure to the sun. A couple of years ago I was overexposed to the sun while out running errands on one of the hottest days of the year in Los Angeles, and the effects were frightening and potentially devastating. I was outside for long stretches of time (I was exposed to the baking sun and hot asphalt), and the weather was so extreme that I ended up with a case of serious dehydration– it was unlike anything that I had ever experienced, and thankfully I didn't end up with heat stroke. Be mindful of the heat and your exposure time, and the very young, the elderly, people with mitigating health issues and pets should also be carefully monitored since the effects of overexposure to the sun can be particularly devastating to them.
2) Drink plenty of water. I know that this is painfully obvious, but it is something that I often don't do nearly enough of– particularly when I am on the go during the warmer months. Carrying around a good quality water bottle definitely helps remind you to drink water, and for me I either carry my 25 oz. S'well Water Bottle (Reviewed HERE), Hydro Flask Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle (Reviewed HERE) or my 16 oz. bkr Water Bottle (Reviewed HERE).
3) Be diligent in your use of a high SPF sunscreen (at least an SPF 30- though I use between an SPF 30-SPF 50 most of the time). The key is to remember to reapply sunscreen frequently. I often find myself applying my sunscreen in the morning and then forgetting to do so again throughout the day. That first and only application offers us a false sense of sun protection, but it does not last from morning until night. I have forced myself to carry sunscreen with me to reapply it, but of course this means that I need to reapply some foundation, tinted moisturizer, blush, or whatever I am wearing on my face that day. While this isn't terribly convenient it is necessary, and definitely worth the trouble. It should be applied to all exposed areas, and remember that the harmful rays also penetrate your clothing. Vulnerable areas like the ears, back of the neck, the drivers side of your face and body, the back of the hands, and feet are most often neglected. My all-time favorite sunscreen for my face, neck and décolleté is: TATCHA SILKEN Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 (Reviewed HERE).
4) Wear a wide brim hat. I try to do this when I am sitting outside reading, gardening, going for walks or hiking.
5) Exfoliate Skinonce a week to remove dead skin and to ensure that your skincare is penetrating deeply enough. Of course this should be avoided if you have sunburned skin, but if your skin isn't traumatized by the elements and can handle a gentle exfoliation then this will go a long way to allowing your products to penetrate more deeply. If you see any suspicious looking moles that have been changing shape and size- then avoid this step and go to your doctor to have it looked at. I can't underscore the importance of this enough- it is very easy for them to identify precancerous and cancerous lesions that you want to deal with immediately. I have had numerous suspicious looking things removed that could eventually become skin cancer.
6) Consider adding in an anti-aging face serum to help fight free radicals. Even if you are young and aren't seeing fine lines pop up yet, the benefits of antioxidant-rich anti-aging serums do wonders for their ability to scavenge free radicals.
7) Add a nourishing face oil into your rotation. They penetrate the skin more deeply and moisturize the skin. They also give the skin a beautiful healthy glow. They can also be used in lieu of heavier skin creams when you want something lighter and faster absorbing. Fear not, they are made for all types of skin from oily to dry and everything in between.
8) Consider adding Hyaluronic-based lotions or gels into your product rotation because it helps to raise, and maintain, the moisture level of the skin. 9) If you have a beloved medium to full coverage foundation that is a perfect match for you, but is too heavy for the season, then blend a small amount with your favorite facial lotion or cream, and you will have the perfect tinted moisturizer. Add a touch of primer and sunscreen, and then you have a BB Cream. When I do this I use the back of my hand to mix it- it's a fast and convenient method. I would still highly recommend using a separate sunscreen to make sure that you have sufficient coverage. Again, you need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day (approximately every 60-80 minutes).
10) Use a good moisture mask at least once a week, or as needed.
11) Don't forget about your lips! Apply a moisturizing lip balm with an SPF underneath your lip gloss or lipstick to keep them protected. Reapplication throughout the day is the key to remaining protected.
12) Don't forget your hair! Not onlycan the sun wreak havoc on hair, but the scalp is also subject to sunburn as well. Use a deep conditioner on a weekly basis to keep your hair in good shape, and consider a good spray on SPF that is formulated for the hair.
13) A good pair of sunglasseswon't just protect your eyes, but will also protect the vulnerable under eye area. Repeated sun exposure will cause sun damage to that vulnerable area and subject your skin to skin cancer and premature aging.

The AATCC (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists) tests fibers and fabrics to measure its performance characteristics like water resistance and appearance. It also tests it’s blocking of ultraviolet radiation. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. We’re most familiar with SPF when we buy sunscreen. SPF determines how long it will take for your skin to redden while wearing the product versus if your skin was unprotected. UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. UPF determines the amount of ultraviolet radiation that a fabric blocks. UPF is always used in reference to fabrics, like your clothing, and how well effective they are blocking UVA and UVB light. Like SPF, there is a rating system for UPF.

Given that I live in sunny Los Angeles, I experience a lot of warm weather throughout the year, but during the summer I do what I can to stay comfortable during the hot weather. One of my favorite things to do is to refrigerate after-sun gels and Aloe Vera Gel because they can be used whenever you want a refreshing cool-down. Not only do they hydrate the skin, but they are soothing, calming and exhilarating. Here are a couple of my favorites:
Sun Bum Cool Down Hydrating After Sun Gel($9.99 for 8 oz. fromSun Bum, Ulta, Walgreens, Swell andDermstore): while conceived to soothe sunburned skin, is also one of my favorite go-to light moisturizing gels to use for a dose of refreshing hydration during the hot summer months. According to Sun Bum, Sun Bum Cool Down Hydrating After Sun Gel soothes and alleviates pain after sun exposure. Tea tree oil reduces inflammation and irritation while aloe vera restores moisture to prevent skin from peeling. Refrigerate gel for an instant cooling effect when applied. Features & Benefits:

According to Mario Badescu, Enriched with Aloe to soothe skin and reduce the sting and discomfort of a sun burn. This non-greasy, lightweight gel cools immediately upon contact.

While there is no way to avoid the sun altogether, not that you would want to, it is important to avoid accessible exposure if you will be there all day. If you are looking to stock up on some sunscreens for your trip to the beach, and are heading to the drugstore, then take a look at some of the Hawaiian Tropic offerings in the sunscreen aisle.
Hawaiian Tropic has been making sunscreen for generations, and I remember using their sunscreens when I was just a kid. Therefore, for me there is always a level of nostalgia associated with their products. However, their range has expanded considerably and the technological advances that they employ have certainly resulted in even better products than I remember using as a child. They have so many wonderful products to get you through the warm summer months from sunscreens to after-sun moisturizers. Here are a few the sunscreens that I am placing in my husband's surfing bag:
Hawaiian Tropic Island Sport Ultra Light Broad Spectrum SPF 50 ($12.34 from Amazon): This is a very lightweight, and thoroughly non-greasy, sunscreen that sinks without leaving behind any residue whatsoever. It is water resistant for about 80 minutes– which is about the time that you would want to reapply it. This is a great choice if you are going to be surfing, plying beach volleyball, jogging, or doing anything active that requires a sweat and water resistant formula. While it comes in an SPF of 15, 30 and 50, I would definitely get the SPF 50 if you are gong to be playing on the beach and in the water.
