A Few Winter Beauty Favorites to Pamper Yourself

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

This winter I have been reaching for a lot of products to pamper myself from head to toe because the cold air has wrought so much havoc on my skin and hair. I thought that I would feature a few products that I have been using a lot this season, and that you might be interested in trying.

SUN BUM Sun Screen Lip Balm ($3.99 from Ulta): One thing that I never leave home without is lip balm with a sunscreen, and even though it is cold outside doesn't mean that we don't need sun protection. I wear them alone and under my favorite lipsticks or lip glosses, and I leave them in my jacket pockets, purses, work bags, desk drawers and car– essentially anywhere that I will be in need of both moisture and sun protection. SUN BUM also has wonderful Tinted Lip Balms with an SPF 15 and CocoBalm versions that contain no sunscreen.

According to SUN BUM,

Keep your lips soft and protected with our flavored Lip Balms in Banana, Key Lime, Coconut, Mango, Pink Guava and Pomegranate. All flavors offer SPF 30+ protection, so your most sensitive skin is protected while you live and love in the sun.
Mamonde Lip Sleeping Mask ($14.00 from Ulta): This sleeping mask has become a staple on my nightstand this winter, and it does a remarkable job healing my dry cracked lips. This is a multi-purpose lip sleeping mask & moisturizing balm that very gently exfoliates dead skin cells while simultaneously deeply hydrating and nourishing the lips. When you awaken lips are soft, smooth, hydrated and dewy.

According to Mamonde,

Pamper your pout! Smooth on Mamonde's Lip Sleeping Mask before bed to intensely soothe and moisturize lips while you sleep and awaken to a dreamy-soft, radiantly luscious pout. Enhanced with antioxidant-rich plum blossom extract, shea and muru muru butters to help lock in moisture, this ultra-hydrating formula also doubles as a glossy day balm. The beautiful blooms of plum trees flourish in late winter, signaling the welcome arrival of spring with their colorful petals and gentle fragrance. Suitable for all skin types. Vegan certified.

Ingredients: Diisostearyl Malate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene,
Phytosteryl/Isostearyl/Cetyl/Stearyl/Behenyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Hydrogenated Poly (C6-14 Olefin), Polybutene, Microcrystalline Wax/Cera Icrocristallina/Cire Microcristalline, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Sucrose Tetrastearate Triacetate, Synthetic Wax, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax/Candelilla Cera Hydrocarbons/Cire De Candelilla, Mica, Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Candelilla Wax Esters, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Fragrance/Parfum, Dimethicone, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax/Copernicia Cerifera Cera/Cire De Carnauba, Dehydroacetic Acid, Methicone, Water/Aqua/Eau, Trehalose, Prunus Mume Fruit Extract, Glycolic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, Prunus Mume Flower Extract, Propanediol, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
7th Heaven Masks ($1.99 each from 7th Heaven and Ulta): are fun, affordable, cruelty-free and effective. They draw out impurities and leave skin soft and smooth. They apply as a gel but when they dry they transform into a rubbery mask that you peel off in sheets. They are so fun to use– especially when you get to peel them off!
Mustela (Available from MustelaNordstrombuybuybabyTargetWalgreensAmazonDermstoreBed, Bath & BeyondCVS and Walmart) is a wonderful skincare brand for babies and mothers, but you neither have to be a baby, nor the mother of a baby to love their nourishing products. Their wipes are very gentle on even the most sensitive skin, and they leave it soft, smooth hydrated and pampered, and I use them for a multitude of uses from cleaning my hands, to removing swatches and makeup. Many of their products have light pleasant aromas, but others are fragrance-free. Furthermore, their lotions are emollient, hydrating and perfect for the cold weather.
According to Mustela,

We've provided skincare expertise for babies and mothers since 1950. Today, we offer a complete range of specially formulated skincare to best address the changes in the delicate skin of newborns, babies, children, and women who are mothers-to-be or new mothers.
The LAVANILA Elements Collection is available in four delectable scents:

Vanilla + Air for Creativity: "An uplifting, floral pairing of violet and rose, perfect for a budding artist or brainstorming session." This lovely light floral has a beautiful aroma that is punctuated by rose and violet, but it is neither too strong or sweet, nor is it powdery. Instead, the lovely fragrance sits close to the skin and has a refined and elegant floral scent.

Vanilla + Water for Peace: "A calming blend of chamomile and jasmine ideal for yoga class or stressful meetings." This deodorant has such an extraordinary aroma that is best described as a sweet floral reminiscent of a warm ocean breeze infused with Jasmine and other light florals.

Vanilla + Earth for Balance: "A warm and woody combination of patchouli and sandalwood that enhances focus and concentration." While its description might summon thoughts of a heavy woody scent punctuated by a pungent patchouli, this is a light, sweet and creamy woodsy scent infused with warm florals, and without any detectable notes from the patchouli. It has a depth and yet it isn't in the least bit overpowering.

Vanilla + Fire for Strength: "Ignite your inner power and energy with these warm and exotic essential oils: red ginger, wild orange, and Madagascar vanilla." I have been reaching for this deodorant a lot lately because its luscious spicy orange aroma feels at once comforting and uplifting during the cold winter months. It reminds me of a smooth and spicy orange blossom tea.

NEW Aftelier Perfumes Lavender Face Elixir | Review

 Press Sample (Unaffiliated Links)

I have extolled the virtues of Mandy Aftel's handmade Face Elixirs for many years now, and with each new addition to her brilliantly curated collection one wonders how she could possibly outdo herself, and yet she always does. The NEW Aftelier Perfumes Lavender Face Elixir is the most sophisticated, refined and intoxicatingly beautiful permutation of lavender that could ever be imagined. In my estimation, lavender is one of the most difficult aromas to capture properly. In less capable hands, it is often far too pungent, overpowering, and can actually be off-putting. Conversely, on the other end of the spectrum, lavender is rendered too sweet, too floral or too artificial. The seemingly impossible balance has been struck by Mandy, and therefore the aroma of her Lavender Face Elixir nearly defies description.

As I have previously noted,

Mandy's brilliance is, in part, a function her ability to unite disparate elements into a single beautiful and heavenly elixir. Her unexpected juxtapositions of seemingly incompatible scents reveal her true artistry. Each note, no matter how assertive, is tempered by the properties inherent in the other oils chosen. and her nuanced selections are a function of her alchemical mastery (and this is accomplished at the most cultivated level).
Mandy's Lavender Face Elixir is unlike anything that you have ever experienced. It is soft and refined, without any pungency, yet it maintains all of the soothing and comforting aromatherapeutic qualities that one expects to find in lavender flowers on the stem. The aroma is soft, warm and creamy without any sharp edges. The lavender asserts itself without being forceful, and the velvety texture of the oil is the perfect textural complement to this elixir's otherworldly aroma.

Mandy inherently, and rather magically, understands each of the ingredients that she carefully chooses to unite. She has described this process to me as one in which each of her Face Elixirs include a lot of the named essence and then she adds, "a few facets of aroma to them." The end result is the likes of which you have neither imagined, nor experienced in a fragrant lavender face oil. It is, in a word, extraordinary.

As I have previously noted, "Mandy able to create artistic marvels by understanding the potential of each of the individual ingredients and then combining them in unexpected ways. She creates otherworldly masterpieces that defy simple description due to their chameleon-like complexity."

Lavender Face Elixir is lightweight and ultra-fast absorbing, and you will be delighted by the speed with which it melts into the skin. It is ultra-nourishing, deeply hydrating and it leaves skin remarkably soft, smooth, supple and luminous. The beautiful lavender aroma soothes the senses and quiets the mind, and it is therefore a wonderfully calming elixir that facilitates a restful and peaceful slumber.
The new glass dropper bottles, that Mandy selected, are elegant, chic, minimalist and stunningly gorgeous. In fact, these bottles are so gorgeous that you will keep, rather than recycle, them.
According to Mandy Aftel,

To celebrate 25 years of making face elixirs, I developed a new base blend of sustainably-produced broccoli seed, squalane, rose hip, peach kernel, and meadowfoam seed oils, in a gorgeous new bottle! My new Lavender version captures the scent of lavender flowers on the stem.

Lavender Face Elixir captures the aroma of lavender flowers on the stem. This nourishing treatment for the face is immediately moisturizing, softening, and conditioning. Add no more than a dropperful of the elixir to the palm of your hand and press your other palm against oil to warm the oil.  Then gently pat the oil into your clean face before bed. The lightweight non-greasy formula absorbs quickly into your skin. You will drift off to sleep in a light veil of fragrance that soothes and relaxes. When you wake up, your skin will feel wonderfully nourished and revitalized. Alternatively, add a few drops of face elixir to your foundation to nourish your skin and improve the texture.

Our lightweight face elixir is immediately absorbed softening and conditioning your skin. Use on your clean face before bed, and drift off to sleep in a light veil of fragrance that promotes relaxation. When you wake up, your skin will feel wonderfully nourished and revitalized.

Directions: Add some drops of the elixir to your fingertips and gently pat into your clean face before bed. This lustrous lightweight non-greasy formula absorbs quickly into your skin. You will drift off to sleep, in a light veil of fragrance that soothes and relaxes. When you wake up, your skin will feel silky, wonderfully nourished and revitalized.

Siam Seas Sai Clear Skin Serum (Full Size: Retail value $65.00 for .68 oz.): This antioxidant-rich serum features a stable form of Vitamin C in conjunction with potent actives that are formulated to create a "second skin-like protective layer" that firms and brightens the skin.  It is lightweight, has a lovely earthy aroma, and it dries down to a natural matte finish. It effectively calms redness, brightens dark spots, hydrates skin and leaves it soft, smooth and supple.

According to Boxwalla,

This serum is a vitamin C serum that combines many ancient South East Asian botanicals with more modern actives like ceramides, MSM and a stable ester of vitamin C. This serum is hydrating with barrier protecting properties. You will find that it may have a slight graininess owing to the presence of gypsum which contributes to the wonderful ''smoothing' properties of this serum.

To test & evaluate this serum, Supadra (founder & formulator of Siam Seas), recommends using just a mist/essence under a couple of pumps of this serum. I have also found that doing that, gives you the best idea of how this serum works and then you can figure out if you need to layer more skincare over it (usually a cream or oil  and/or balm). For oilier skin types and in warmer climates, you may not need anything over this.

Directions:
1. You can mist and then apply 2-3 pumps of Sai. It will tighten on the face, like it's forming a 'second-skin' layer. It dries down really matte and your skin will feel very smooth to touch. But visually, it still will look glowy. You can repeat this step again, if your skin tends to be dry (Mist and apply Sai, let it dry, then Mist and apply Sai again). This will allow you to study the effects of this serum on your skin (it is really great at reducing scars as well).

2. After the testing phase, you can start layering this under an oil, balm/cream, if your skin needs more emollient products. When doing that, you don't have to wait until Sai dries down (so that the oil can be applied to damp skin). It is recommended to always apply Sai on damp skin. An example layering routine would be : Mist, Sai, 1-3 drops of oil, seal in with a dab of cream or balm.

Sai Clearing Serum Ingredients: Oryza sativa(rice) water*, Ascorbyl phosphate, Methylsulfonylmethane, Gluconolactone, Senna tora (cassia tora) water*, Terminalia chebula (chebulic myrobalan) extract*, Unsulfured gypsum fibrosum, Vigna aconitifolia (moth bean) extract, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Carbomer, Aloe Barbadensis (aloe vera) juice*, Curcuma longa (turmeric) hydrosol*, Acacia concinna (sompoi) water*, Ocimum gratissimum (basil) extract*, Camellia sinensis (green tea) extract*, Glycerin, Aqua, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium anisate, Silybum Marianum (milk thirtle) fruit extract*, Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) extract*, Boswellia serrate(frankincense) extract*, Gardenia jasminoides (cape jasmine) extract*, Coptis chinensis (coptis) extract*, Phellodendron amurense (amur cork tree) extract*, Scutellaria baicalensis (Skullcap) extract*, Berberis (barberry) extract*, Plumbago zeylanica (chitrak) extract**, Angelica Dahurica (wild angelica) extract*, Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) extract*, Paeonia lactiflora (peony) extract*, Azadirachta indica (siamese neem) extract*, Centratherum Anthelminticum (kali jiri) seeds extract**, Andrographis paniculata (king of bitters) extract**, Usnea Barbata (beard lichen) extract*, Baptisia australis (indigo) extract*, Rhus chinensis (galla chinensis) extract*, Myristica fragrans (nutmeg) extract*, Piper nigrum (black pepper) extract*, Hemidesmus indicus (indian sarsaparilla) extract*, Terminalia arjuna (arjuna) extract*, Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) extract*, Rheum palmatum (rhubarb) extract*, Eclipta prostrate (false daisy) extract*, Garcinia mangostana (mangosteen) extract*, Rubus occidentalis (black raspberry) oil,  Populus tremuloides (aspen) bark extract*, Raspberryketone Glucoside, Terminalia bellirica (beleric) extract*, Phyllanthus emblica (amla) extract*,  Cupressus cashmeriana (weeping cypress) oil*, Rosa centifolia (rose moroc) absolute oil*,  Xanthan Gum, Lecithin, Sclerotinum Gum , Pullulan, Vanilla planifolia (vanilla) CO2*, Cananga odorata (ylang ylang extra) oil* *Organic /biologique, **Wildcrafted/naturel
Siam Seas Kwam Rak Body Serum (Full Size. Retail value $90.00 for 3.4 oz.): This is an absolutely delectable hybrid body serum that deeply hydrates and moisturizes the body with the efficacy of a rich body lotion and an emollient body oil combined. It has a remarkably lightweight texture that is creamy, emollient and it melts into the skin in the most satisfying way. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple, radiant and silky to the touch. The complex aroma transforms from a spicy earthy scent to a more complex floral punctuated by Jasmine Sambac.

According to Boxwalla,

Kwam Rak is a very unique body serum made in a base of aloe (aloe juice and aloe inner fillet gel). It also contains a high percentage of raw, mustard seed oil. Since this serum has a built in aloe delivery system and cream lotion-y texture, unlike other oils, you don't have to apply on damp skin. It still absorbs beautifully when applied on dry skin. But you can apply on damp skin for more spreadability. It feels like a light watery serum going on, but with an after-feel of an oil/balm.

The scent of Kwam Rak is very unusual.  It starts of with a spicy earthy scent of mustard oil. As you smell the mustard oil, you will also simultaneously, feel the cooling effect of the mustard oil on the skin. Mustard oil (which is also used to cook with in Thailand and parts of India), is used both in Ayurveda and Thai Massage for its ability to boost circulation and thereby reduce cellulite. After a good 15-20 mins, the mustard oil scent dissipates and gives way to the softer floral scent of frangipani/plumeria and jasmine sambac which is what will linger on your skin.

Kwam Rak Body Serum Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis (aloe vera) juice*, Brassica nigra (mustard seed) oil*,  Helianthus (sunflower) oil, Aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) inner fillet gel*, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Phytosphingosine, Cholesterol, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Carbomer, Punica granatum (pomegranate) extract*, Polyglyceryl-2 Sesquioleate (vegetable derived), Glycerin, Aqua, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium anisate, Nelumbo nucifera (pink lotus) extract*, Camellia sinensis (green tea) extract*, Terminalia chebula (chebulic myrobalan) extract*,  Curcumin longa (turmeric) extract*, Ginkgo biloba (gingko) extract*, Zingiber officinale (ginger) extract*, Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) extract*, Morinda citrifolia (noni) extract*, Rosa spp (rosehips) extract*, Sodium PCA, Vegetable glycerin, Plumeria (frangipani) oil*, Populus tremuloides (aspen) bark extract*, Piper longum (long pepper) extract*, Sodium Levulinate, Sodium Anisate, Hyaluronic acid, Jasminum sambac (Jasmine sambac) oil*, Myristica fragrans (nutmeg) oil*, Xanthan Gum, Lecithin, Sclerotium Gum, Pullulan. *Organic /biologique, **Wildcrafted/naturel

Olbas Oil and Herbal Bath Offer Relief for Cold & Flu Season

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

Now that we are in the midst of cold and flu season, and since I currently have a nasty head cold, I thought that I would share two products from which I have sought relief. While these Olbas products have not cured my cold, they have offered me considerable relief from my stuffy nose and my overall sense of malaise. Olbas, a Swiss company that is over 100 years old, offers an assortment of essential oils, remedies and even cough lozenges and salves that are sure to relieve symptoms and discomfort associated with colds, allergies and even achy muscles.

Olbas Herbal Bath ($9.49 for 4 oz. and $16.99 for 8 oz. from Olbas, CVS and Swanson Health): At the beginning of my cold I opted to take hot baths rather than showers to try to soak away some of my discomfort, to try to open up my sinus passages, and to give me an overall sense of wellbeing. This lovely Herbal Bath has a wonderful foam,  and its invigorating peppermint-eucalyptus aroma awakens the senses and helps to open up sinus passages. Furthermore, it soothes achy muscles and refreshes the senses. You definitely want to make sure to avoid contact with your eyes!

According to Olbas,

Olbas Herbal Bath is a delightful, therapeutic and fragrant bath liquid from Switzerland. It soothes and relaxes aching bodies as it tingles and invigorates all the body’s senses. Marvelous after a hard day of work, sports or everyday tension.

You can use it in your favorite bathtub. Or, for lots of bubbles – try it in a whirlpool bath! A little bit goes a long way. Use it in the shower as a liquid soap – makes an excellent body wash that will stimulate all your senses and leave you feeling clean and refreshed. Excellent as a foot bath for tired, aching feet.

Olbas Herbal Bath Soothes, Relaxes, Tingles & InvigoratesYou’ll really enjoy the delightful aroma of Olbas Herbal Bath. Natural Olbas vapors provide a pleasant, refreshing, and cooling sensation to your nasal passages. This unique experience is especially pleasant during times of seasonal discomfort, which can often bring unwelcome nasal encounters.

Provides wonderful relief for children, too! A warm, bubbly Olbas Herbal Bath helps enhance their breathing and helps them get a good nights sleep.

Blended with chlorophyll, Olbas Bath also acts as a natural deodorant, so it keeps you clean and fresh. Provides a truly exceptional experience that can be enjoyed by the entire family!

Olbas Oil Aromatherapy Inhalant and Massage Oil ($9.50 for 0,32 oz. and $19.99 for .95 oz. from Penn Herb, CVS and Swanson Health): There are numerous ways to use this therapeutic oil, but two of my favorite ways are very simple for treating my cold. First, one can simply sniff it directly from the bottle (which I will do for allergies, but not for my cold because of the germs). Rather than contaminating the bottle directly you can decant a small amount into a little container that you can dispose of after use. Second, one can add about 20 drops of the oil to a bowl of hot water and place a towel over the head and inhale the vapors for about 5-10 minutes. I also have experimented with soaking a wash cloth in water infused with a few drops and simply sniff it when I start to feel congested, and it definitely offers some relief.

According to Olbas.

Olbas Oil originated in Basel, Switzerland over 100 years ago, and continues to be a European and worldwide favorite. The natural essentiOlbas Oil for Colds & Flu, Aches & Painsal oils in Olbas are extracted from six medicinal herbs, which have been the basis of healing in cultures around the world for centuries. These oils are carefully blended by Swiss herbalists, making the Olbas formula truly unique. The synergistic combination of these six essential oils provides amazing sensations to your body at multiple levels.

Also well known for its use in massage, Olbas Oil tendsOlbas Oil - Power to Breathe, Naturally. to stimulate circulation at the surface of the skin. It opens up the pores and provides a comfortable warm and cool feeling in the muscles and joints.

Runners, cyclists and other sports enthusiasts praise the value of Olbas Oil. Massaging with Olbas Oil helps loosen muscles and make them supple, while inhaling Olbas vapors may help support endurance and performance.

Directions: Daytime- Inhaling vapors from a tissue sprinkled with Olbas Oil quickly stimulates and enhances the breathing passages. Try adding 20 drops of Olbas Oil to a bowl of hot water, place a towel over the head and breathe vapors in deeply for 5 to 10 minutes. Nighttime- Simply sprinkle 5-10 drops on a tissue and tuck inside a pillowcase. For aching bodies: cold compresses feel refreshing on the forehead.

Ingredients: Essential Oils of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Cajeput, Wintergreen, Juniper and Clove.
Overall Assessment: These two products have really offered me considerable relief from my cold, and I will definitely make sure to keep them on hand.

Winter Skin Clarifying with Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub and Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

I received a lovely email from a longtime LSBB reader who wanted to express that the winter has wrought considerable havoc on her skin this year, and not only is her normal skin exceptionally dry, but that she has also been having some unusual breakouts as well. She wanted to know if I had a favorite affordable range of products that she could use to spot treat the breakouts without drying the rest of her skin.

Interestingly, in addition to the fact that my normal/combination skin has been especially dry this winter, I have also been getting a few breakouts on my chin that I have been spot-treating with my tried and true Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub and Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask. In fact, when I have these breakouts I like to use the scrub at night on my chin and then apply the charcoal mask on the breakouts alone. This combination is quite effective, and my pimples clear quickly, and my skin is not left dry, taut. red or flaky.

About Derma E,

DERMA E didn’t start out in the beauty aisle or the boardroom. Instead, we began in a small health food store in Southern California. Our first product was a jar of Vitamin E 12,000 I.U. Moisturizing Cream. People were amazed at the results it had on their skin and word caught on.

Over the years we’ve introduced many extraordinary products, each one rooted in our belief that skin health can be visibly improved through the right combination of potent vitamins, wholesome nutrients and exceptional ingredients.

Today we’ve grown to become one of the largest natural facial care brands in the U.S. We attribute our success to honoring our customers with products that promote healthier-looking skin and business ethics that promote a healthier world.
Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub ($15.50 for 4 oz. from Derma EUltaSkin Care RXWalgreensBirchbox and Dermstore): This is a highly effective exfoliant that gently lifts dead skin cells and dirt leaving skin clean, clear and radiant. The exfoliating particles are small in size, and they are gentle enough against the skin that one could use this scrub on a daily basis, or as needed, for oilier skin types. For my normal to combination skin, I find that I only need to use this scrub once or twice a week to see all of the benefits. While the Menthol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate is toward the middle of the list of ingredients, it only offers the faintest tingle to the skin, and serves to be refreshing rather than irritating. This scrub is very well-suited for combination to oily skin.

According to Derma E,

Gentle enough for daily use, this detox scrub lifts away micropollutants and impurities while promoting oxygenation for a fresh, healthy radiance. Doctor developed and clinically tested, this revitalizing formula contains some of the most powerful minerals and natural toxin fighters from the earth and from the sea. Kimarine® Wakame is a potassium-rich, magnesium-rich seaweed that is clinically proven to protect skin against environmental pollutants (exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, heavy metals). Bladderwrack is an antioxidant-rich, mineral-rich seaweed known for its water-binding properties, supporting healthy skin hydration and nourishment.

Activated Charcoal, known for absorbing 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, helps remove toxins from the skin’s surface. Apricot Seed Powder gently exfoliates away micropollutants, and Green Tea delivers potent antioxidant defense.

Directions: Apply a small amount to wet or dry skin and gently massage in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Gentle enough for daily use.

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Cetyl Alcohol, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Seed Powder, Glycerin, Coco-Caprylate, Charcoal Powder, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame, Kimarine®) Extract, Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract* (.1%), Menthol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Xanthan Gum, Diheptyl Succinate, Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer, Menthyl Lactate, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Coco-Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Iron Oxide, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
Derma E Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask ($19.50 Derma EUltaSkin Care RXSkin StoreWalgreensTargetBeauty Encounter and Birchbox): This 2-in-1 charcoal and clay mask not only draws out impurities, debris and excess sebum as many clay masks do, but it also contains exfoliating particles that sweep away dead skin cells. Simply apply it as a traditional clay mask, let it dry after about 5 minutes, then wet fingers and gently massage mask in a circular motion in order to activate the exfoliant. Skin is left remarkably clean, decongested and radiant. I neither find it stripping, nor uncomfortable on the skin. However, the refreshing peppermint tingle from the Menthyl Lactate, which is an ester of menthol and lactic acid, may be too active for people with particularly sensitive skin. For my normal/combination skin it is refreshing and exhilarating, and not in the least bit drying or irritating.

According to Derma E,

Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask deeply detoxifies skin of harmful micropollutants in two ways: (1) Natural clays infused with Kimarine® Wakame, Bladerwrack and Activated Charcoal lift out dirt, oil and bacteria to decongest pores as the mask dries; (2) Apricot Seed Powder exfoliates away dead skin cells and captured debris upon removal. Kaolin and Bentonite Clays absorb excess oils and impurities, relieving skin congestion. Activated Charcoal, known for absorbing 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, purges pores of deeply rooted toxins, then Apricot Seed Powder gently exfoliates away micropollutants. Ideal for oily, active or urban skin types, even safe for reactive skin (minimal ingredients and allergy-tested), used this formula once or twice a week for skin that looks dramatically fresher, healthier and purely glowing

Directions: Apply generously to clean facial skin, avoiding eye and lip area. Leave on for 5 minutes or until mask is completely dry. Moisten fingertips, then massage mask gently in a circular motion to activate exfoliants. Concentrate on areas of congestion such as nose, chin and forehead. Rinse thoroughly, or remove with a damp cloth. Pat dry. Use 1-2 times a week.

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Gel Extract*, Kaolin (Clay), Bentonite (Clay), Glycerin (Vegetable Derived) , Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Seed Powder, Charcoal Powder, Fucus Vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Extract, Undaria Pinnatifida (Wakame, Kimarine®) Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium (Canadian Willowherb ™) Extract, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Organic Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Menthyl Lactate, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.
Overall Assessment: Derma E Purifying Daily Detox Scrub and Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask are both perfectly suited for most types of skin to detox, clarify, exfoliate and draw out impurities. For dry skin, they are great for periodic use, as needed. However, for normal to oily skin types, these are perfect to use a couple of times a week. They are also very effective to spot treat breakouts, to unclog pores on the nose and chin, and to generally leave skin clear.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Luxury Palette and Cheek to Chic Swatches

Affiliate Links

One of the most hyped recent makeup releases (and re-releases) is undoubtedly the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Collection, and while I have (and love) her iconic Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk (Reviewed HERE), which is a beautiful nude pink, I needed to see the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Luxury Palette and Cheek to Chic in person to determine if they were too warm and too peach for my cool-toned skin. The description and pictures on the Charlotte Tilbury website   described the eyeshadow palette as "golden pink shades" and the Cheek to Chic as a "two-tone pink and champagne powder blush"– both of which sounded absolutely perfect for me, but I was concerned that they would pull far-too warm on me, and sadly they do. If they had been a bit cooler and if they had pulled a bit more pink, then I would have purchased both, but instead they were warm and muddy against my cool-toned complexion.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Luxury Palette and Cheek to Chic both boast ultra-finely milled luxurious textures, beautiful pigmentation and they are very easy to blend. The eyeshadows and blush are very warm peachy shades that are absolutely gorgeous, and they are perfect elegant neutrals for people with fair to medium warm-toned complexions. If you have cooler-toned skin, you might want to swatch them on your skin to see if they are too warm for you, as they are for me. I wish that I could wear these colors, but sadly they are just too warm.
