Empties Post Volume XL: January 2016

Press Sample, Purchased & Samples (Affiliate Links)

I tend to like to purge things before the new year begins, and toward the end of 2015 I decided to donate piles of things that we were no longer using, and throw out things that were broken (and beyond repair). I like to start the new year off without feeling burdened by things that just take up space without ever being used. When it came to skincare products, I rounded up a pile of nearly used up products and decided to keep them in sight on my counter so that I would finish them up and recycle their bottles and jars early in the year. I actually found that method so effective that I am now making this a practice– otherwise things get forgotten about and lost in the back of the cabinet as new products find their way into my life.

Here is what I used up in January:

1) Relogy Dual Action Treatment Foam (Reviewed here): This cleanser lived in my shower for quite a long while, and I used it whenever I had pesky monthly breakouts. I found that it was remarkably effective at eradicating breakouts without drying out my skin. I really like that it is 95% natural, and that it is a gentle non-stripping foam.

Dual-action Treatment Foam. (It’s bubbly for a reason, not just ‘cause it’s fun.) 95% Natural, Relogy’s Treatment Foam uses the power of oxygenated bubbles to penetrate deep into your pores to start clearing acne immediately. This step also makes your skin look and feel softer, smoother and healthier. Use it as a cleanser with rinsing, or just apply and let it dry!

Ingredients: Salicylic Acid (from white willow bark - a multifunctional ingredient that addresses many of the systemic causes of blemishes) 0.5%, Benzalkonium Chloride 0.2% (gentle anti-bacterial often used in eye drops), Water, Sodium Laurel Sulfate (skin cleansing agent/soap derived from palm or coconut oils), Cocamidopropyl Betaine (derived from coconut oil - helps remove dirt and oil from the skin), Decyl Glycoside (derived from corn starch and coconut - helps remove dirt and oil from the skin), Sorbitol (derived from corn syrup - used to prevent moisture loss), Propylene Glycol (organic compound used as a stabilizer, delivery system and skin conditioning agent), Panthenol (a derivative of vitamin B5 used for moisturizing), PEG-75 (skin lubricant made from plant lanolin - used for moisturizing), Meadowfoam Flower Oil (extract from meadowfoam flower for moisture and anti-aging), Tetrasodium EDTA (preservative), Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot Orange) Extract (natural anti-septic to promote healing).

2) Alba Botanica Natural Very Emollient Body Lotion (Reviewed here): I really love this lotion, and have been purchasing it for years. It is filled with healthy ingredients, is easy on the wallet, and is widely available. I tend to pick mine up from Whole Foods when I am grocery shopping, but periodically find it on sale online. It leaves skin nourished, moisturized and very soft. I cut open the bottle and scraped out every last drop, and will definitely be purchasing another bottle soon.

An exquisitely light, natural body lotion packed with rich botanical emollients to soothe and soften skin while providing 100% daily hydration.*  Alba Botanica Very Emollient™Body Lotion blends aloe vera, green tea and chamomile extracts plus antioxidants to help nourish and replenish skin on contact.  Perfect for use in massage.  This rich lotion absorbs quickly so it feels light enough to use all day, every day.

It is a lovely scent that fills the shower with its lovely aroma. It has a rich foam that cleans the skin without stripping it, and I it is emollient enough that I used it for shaving as well.

11) Aesop Classic Shampoo: I really liked this shampoo, and found it gentle and non-stripping, but once again I wasn't able to test it long enough to determine whether it was a good fit for my hair.

I also get so many compliments when I wear it that I finally caved and purchased a full size bottle.

By Request: My Stash of Facial Cleansers

I received a request to reveal my entire skincare stash, but that would make for one mighty overwhelming post to contemplate. Therefore, I decided the only sane way to tackle this task was to break it into types of products. As a result of this choice, logic dictated that I do so in the order that I would use the products- thus I began with my cleansers.

I tend to rotate cleansers based upon the needs of my skin at any given moment. The exception is when I am testing out new products because one has to use them for an uninterrupted and sustained period of time in order to determine their efficacy.

1) Tatcha One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil (review forthcoming). Best cleansing oil that I have tried!
2) *Relogy Dual Action Treatment Foam (reviewed here). Very effective and gentle!
3) *Coral Actives Retinol Exfoliating Cleanser (reviewed here). You had me at Retinol! Wonderful!
4) Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser (reviewed here). Nice creamy lather!
5) Sponge- Gel Katharistiko (reviewed here). One of the best cleansers I have ever used!
6) *vbeauté Evidence Eraser (reviewed here). Wonderfully effective and so gentle.
7) Clarins Gentle Foaming Cleanser (review forthcoming). I really like this cleanser.
8) *Gold Sakura Facial Cleansing Foam Shirasu Line (reviewed here). Leaves you squeaky clean!
9) *Gold Sakura Hinoki Deitanseki Facial Cleansing Foam with Charcoal and Hinoki Oil (reviewed here). A lovely deep cleaning cleanser.
10) Tatcha Classic Rice Enzyme Powder (review forthcoming). Unquestionably the best of the best!
11) *Gold Sakura Beauty Bar Soap from the Hinoki Kurocha Line (reviewed here). Unique and lovely cleansing experience.
12) Erno Laszlo Sea Mud Soap (reviewed here). Tried and true. It has fine exfoliating granules that leaves your skin silky smooth!
While cleansing waters aren't cleansers in the traditional sense, they are nonetheless cleansers of sorts- and thus warranted inclusion.

13) Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water (reviewed here). An absolute staple, and my very favorite cleansing water of all time!
14) La Roche-Posay Solution Micellaire Physiologique (reviewed here). A very nice cleansing water.

Relogy Natural Acne Treatment System- Review

As I have mentioned before, while I am not acne prone, I do have periodic hormonal breakouts, or those caused from a reaction to skincare products. As previously noted, I have also received numerous emails from readers with acne who are looking for highly effective and safe products to eradicate those pesky pimples. This weekend I received two emails from readers asking whether I knew of a good acne skincare line that was both natural and vegan. Normally I would have had to do extensive research to find an answer for their query, but thankfully I had already been testing out Relogy Natural Acne Treatments, and knew that this line was good enough to recommend without hesitation.

According to Relogy, "This time, it will be different – because Relogy is different from ordinary acne care products. Relogy's revolutionary formulation combines effective acne treatment, with the power of natural ingredients, to bring you gentle, anti- inflammatory and healing effects -- without the usual drying and irritation of other acne products. Relogy's two step process is the easiest, fastest and most-side effect free acne treatment you've tried...."
Step 1:  Dual Action Treatment Foam:  According to Relogy their Dual Action Treatment Foam "uses the natural healing power of Citrus Bergamie, made from the Bergamot orange, which is a fragrant hybrid fruit grown in southern Italy.  Bergamot is used for its cooling, refreshing effect on the skin.  Bergamot is ideally suited to help calm inflamed skin.  It also has natural anti-septic and oil-reducing properties that aid in the healing and prevention of acne.  Meadowfoam Seed Oil comes from a small, herbaceous winter-spring annual.  It is a powerful anti-oxidant and natural moisturizer known for its rejuvenating properties, and ability to keep skin hydrated and supple, which aids in prevention of acne scarring.  Salicylic Acid is a mildly acidic organic molecule derived from the bark of the White Willow tree.  Salicylic Acid works as an exfoliant, speeding up cellular turnover to lift dead skin cells and reveal new skin beneath.  It has mild inflammation-fighting effects, so it can reduce redness and swelling on the surface of your skin and can improve skin tone and texture.  It also helps reduce excess oil on the surface of your skin and in your pores."

One of the first things that I really liked about this cleanser is the fact that it can be used as a non-rinsing topical treatment when you don't need to wash your entire face, but when you do need to deal with a breakout, or you can just use it as a standard rinse-off cleanser. When I used it as a spot-treatment I applied a very small amount directly to my pimples and let it dry down. When I used it as a rinse-off cleanser I applied a single pump to warm damp skin, washed my face using circular motions, and then rinsed it off.  The cleansing foam smells clean and fresh, and feels really nice on the skin. I was worried that my combination skin might feel stripped, but it didn't in the least bit. I really like the way that my skin looks and feels after use. It somehow managed to eliminate my pimples without drying out my skin!

Ingredients: Water, Salicylic Acid (from Willow Tree Bark), Benzalkonium Chloride, Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Clycoside, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, Panthenol, PEG-75, Meadownfoam Oil, Tetrasodium EDTA, Methyl Paraben, Propl Paraben, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (orange) Extract, FD&C Blue #1.
Step 2: Skin Balancing Lotion with Coconut Milk:  "Organic Coconut Milk and Jojoba are just two of the beneficial botanicals used in this hydrating skin balancing lotion.  Native Americans have long used Jojoba for its natural ability to heal wounds.  It has anti-microbial properties, which means it actually discourages the growth of some bacterial and fungal microbes that attack the skin.  In addition, the chemical composition of Jojoba closely resembles that of the skin's natural sebum, so it is gentle and easily absorbed.  The rich tropical smell of Coconut Oil and Coconut Milk combined with its many topical skin benefits makes this oil and excellent daily face and body moisturizer, and its disinfectant and anti-microbial properties help to keep moisture from escaping from the skin, which aids in retaining softness and suppleness." This lotion is made from 100% natural and vegan ingredients!

I must confess that I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my skin was left so soft and supple after using this lotion. I love the short list of healthy ingredients, and I love that it moisturized my skin while while healing the pimples. Generally I have avoided applying lotions and creams to broken out areas because that generally makes matters worse, but not so with this anti-inflammatory rich balancing lotion. This is a lovely product well worth its weight in gold for those dealing with breakouts!

To use: "take a pea-sized amount and massage into your skin.... It is the perfect addition to the foam, keeping your skin soft, smooth, hydrated and balanced, even as the foam is hard at work killing acne bacteria. If you have naturally oily skin, we recommend using these product just once per day."

Ingredients: Purified water, certified organic coconut oil, certified organic jojoba, emulsifying wax, glycerin, certified organic coconut milk, allantoin, phenoxyethanal.
Targeted Acne Spot Treatment: According to Relogy, "When needed use after cleansing and before moisturizing. Uses seaweed extract from the Chondrus Crispus plant, gathered from the icy waters along the rugged coastal regions of the North Atlantic.  It is also used as a natural exfoliant to remove dead skin cells, which can block pores.  Lactobacillus/Bean Seed Extract is a pro-biotic used for its anti-inflammatory properties.  Rosemary Leaf Extract is known to protect skin cells, fight signs of aging and the formation of dark spots.  The effect of stress and toxins on skin are lessened by Rosemary Leaf, as it safeguards a protective protein known as HSP70.  Tea Tree Leaf Oil offers a natural, skin-friendly way to clear acne due to its antiseptic properties for treating wounds and preventing infections, and Salicylic Acid, made from Willow Tree Bark, provides an extremely effective and targeted treatment for acne spots and can improve the look and feel of the skin. Targeted spot treatment goes straight to work on existing blemishes to further boost your results."

This is a really great acne spot treatment product, and I love the roller ball applicator. It is convenient and easy to use, and it is also very portable. I found it quite effective both before my pimples erupted, and also after they clearly announced themselves. I noticed that it knocked down the red inflamed areas very quickly and that my pimples were eliminated in record time. I will always have this on hand to spot treat pimples when they occur.

Directions and recommendations from Relogy: "Using the soothing rollerball applicator, apply directly to the acne blemish, avoiding surrounding skin. Use up to twice daily. Usage instructions: We recommend using RELOGY twice per day, every day if you have persistent acne, and once per day for occasional breakouts and to prevent future breakouts once your acne has cleared."

Ingredients: Water, Glycereth-18, Glycereth-18 Ethylhexanoate, Ethoxydiglycol, Salicylic Acid, Lactobacillus/Bean Seed Extract/Sodium Glutamate Ferment Filtrate, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Chondrus Crispus Extract, Hydrolyzed Chondrus Crispus (seaweed) Extract, Menthol, Bisabolol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Phenoxyethanolm Ethylhexylglycerin

Overall assessment: Relogy has made a significant breakthrough in the natural skincare range of acne treatment products. Their products eradicate acne gently yet effectively, and will appeal to people who want to use a more natural line that is vegan and cruelty-free. This is viable alternative to the more conventional acne treatment systems, and it is so easy and pleasant to use. I must say, I am quite impressed!
