/skin regimen/ ginger cleansing oil is made in Italy by the Davines Skincare Division, and thus I had very high expectations for this product. I love Davines haircare products, and I have used for many years– therefore, I was delighted when I first learned that they had a skincare line.

This cleansing oil is extraordinarily lovely from its texture, to its smell, to its unmistakable efficacy. It is a mid-weight oil, with a gorgeous light ginger aroma, that feels like velvet on the skin. I apply it to dry skin and I massage it for about a minute before I wet my hands and continue to massage it into the skin. As soon as the oil is introduced to the water it turns into a creamy white emulsion. It lifts impurities, dirt and  makeup with tremendous efficacy and it leaves skin soft, smooth and hydrated. You can use it alone, or as the first step in your double cleansing routine. I love to double cleanse, most of the time, and when I do I simply use my cleanser after I emulsify this cleansing oil. This is the embodiment of the perfect cleansing oil, in my humble opinion.

Sweet Almond, Jojoba and Macadamia Oils: rich in emollients and nourishing fatty acids. These oils deeply hydrate even the driest skin. These oils restore softness, elasticity and strengthen the skin barrier.

Overall Assessment: This is such a lovely and effective cleansing oil, and it is a true pleasure to use. A+

Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil Review

Among my recent Erno Laszlo purchases is yet another product with which I am very familiar! Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil is among the products that I began using at 17, and continued to use for many many years. There is no question that living through the pandemic has made me very nostalgic for my life before this time, and Erno Laszlo products were such a constant in my life growing up that I felt compelled to revisit their luxury skincare line. I was reminiscing with my mom and sister about the days that we use to drive to San Francisco from the East Bay to replenish our Laszlo products, spend time together and create so many noteworthy memories, and I told them both that part of my trip down memory lane was the rediscovery of Erno Laszlo.

Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil is a wonderfully nourishing cleansing oil, with a comforting light and warm aroma, that is supposed to be massaged into dry skin. It removes makeup and dirt and helps to dislodge debris from clogged pores. After a few minutes of massaging the oil into the skin you dip your chosen Erno Laszlo cleansing bar (my choice is their Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar reviewed HERE) into a basin of warm water, then rub the bar on your oily face. Water activates the creamy lather and it deeply cleans the skin without any stripping (the oil acts as a buffer). Laszlo purists, like me, use the old splashing method which involves 20 splashes in the filled basin and then 10 splashes with fresh running water (the water should not be too hot). The end result is extraordinarily clean, soft skin that isn't in the least bit stripped. This is an amazing cleansing oil, and I had forgotten how much I had loved it, and the extent to which it is extraordinarily effective.

I am a proponent of double cleansing, with a cleansing oil as the first step, and while I don't do it every time that I wash my face throughout the year, I do it daily during the warm months of summer. The added step cleans the skin thoroughly and gently, and never strips it or leaves it dried out. Shu Uemura makes some of my all-time favorite cleansing oils, and in fact they have 7 different varieties from which to choose. They are housed in elegant thick plastic bottles which makes them perfect to use in the shower, and in fact I keep one in my shower at all times without the concern that it will shatter.

Each of the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils is formulated to address specific targeted concerns and types of skin, but all of them transform into a lovely milky emulsion when they come in contact with water, and they do an exceptional job removing dirt, impurities and makeup. While I have normal to combination skin, I have found that I am able to use all of these oils without exception. However, since each one is quite different, it is worth assessing the needs of your skin before selecting the cleansing oil or cleansing oils that will best suit your skin.

Antioxidant-rich Acai calms sensitive skin, while Magnolia and Reishi Mushrooms are utilized to restore and make skin more resilient. Rather than their traditional cleansing oil consistency, this delectable cleansing oil boasts a thick gel texture that magically liquifies and transforms into a milky emulsion when water is introduced. It boasts extreme efficacy in its ability to break down makeup, in part because the gel texture is so easy to use, and it lends itself to the speedy and effective removal of eye makeup. It has a light to mid-weight consistency that transforms into a milky emulsion when water is introduced. It gently removes every trace of dirt, pollution and makeup without ever stripping the skin. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple, balanced and hydrated. I don't wear a lot of waterproof makeup, but when I wear waterproof mascara it does an enviable job breaking it down and removing it. It has a light, clean aroma that is pleasant and refreshing.

Shu Uemura Porefinist Anti-Shine Fresh Cleansing Oil ($12.00-$75.00 for 1.69 oz. and 15.22 oz. from Shu Uemura USA and $15.00-$86.00 from Shu Uemura Canada): This feather-weight cleansing oil, with its delectable light floral aroma, is specifically formulated to address the needs of acne-prone/oily skin. While it deep cleans the skin, it does so exceedingly gently and without any stripping or drying. It thoroughly removes dirt and excess oils from the pores, and makeup and dirt from the surface of the skin, and it leaves skin soft, smooth and supple. When water is introduced, this cleansing oil transforms into a milky emulsion that leaves behind no oily residue whatsoever. If you have normal to dry skin, you may find this cleansing oil a bit too clarifying for your skin to use on a daily basis, and while I have normal/combination skin, I only tend to use it a few times a week, or as needed.

While it can be used by all skin types, I suspect that it will be coveted by people with normal to dry skin. When water is introduced, this cleansing oil also transforms into a rich and creamy milky emulsion that gently removes every trace of dirt and makeup without ever stripping the skin, and it leaves skin velvety soft and smooth without leaving behind a greasy residue. It has a warm and creamy aroma that I find intoxicatingly delicious.

Since I have normal to combination skin, I have a lot of flexibility in the skincare products that I can use. I can generally use things that are formulated for most types of skin, and make my selections based upon the needs of my skin at any given moment, and therefore that is how I determine which of the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils to use.

Overall Assessment: If you love cleansing oils, then you Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils are definitely worthy of your consideration. They were making them long before it was fashionable to do so, and their formulas remain covet-worthy.

NEW Aftelier Perfumes Geranium Cleansing Oil | Review

Reflecting back on skincare product launches in 2018, there were so many that it has become a bit of a blur, and few were truly exceptional. Instead, many were gimmicky and superfluous or they were simply decidedly lackluster. In stark contrast were the notable creations of Mandy Aftel, and to suggest that she stands apart in this crowded landscape is an extraordinary understatement.

In fact, Aftelier Perfumes just launched Mandy's new Geranium Cleansing Oil and the incredible brand new Lavender Face Elixir, and from first use it was clear that these beautiful handcrafted luxury oils were peerless. Not only are her new oils unmitigated perfection, but the new glass dropper  bottles are elegant, chic, minimalist and stunningly gorgeous.

As I have previously stated in these virtual pages, "Each of the ingredients yield to Mandy's vision and artistry, and allow her to create something far greater than the sum of its parts. In the same way that Renaissance artists perfected nature by creating idealized portraits, so too, does Mandy take her creations to a level unseen in nature....Mandy is able to coax the greatest realized potential from each of them, and this symphony of raw materials, at her hands, play a supportive role that facilitates" artistic creations of extraordinary grandeur.

Aftelier Perfumes Geranium Cleansing Oil is a truly exemplary cleansing oil, the likes of which I have never experienced. My initial observations were informed by the disbelief that there was a permutation of geranium that was so otherworldly. One cannot sufficiently underscore the extent to which Mandy is an artist of rare genius, and this cleansing oil is a reminder of this fact. Geranium often has a sharp edge, but this golden elixir is warm, soft, slightly peppery and informed by a current of light floral notes. Mandy deftly selected each of the ingredients in perfect proportions, and the result is a balance of elements of which only she is capable. The aroma is the sublime embodiment of what geranium could only ever hope to be, and that could only be realized by Mandy.

The texture of this oil is impossibly silky and smooth, and its tactile effects are not only ultra-luxe, but it is likewise visceral in its ability to evoke unmitigated joy. Use of this cleansing oil, is therefore, profoundly experiential and it requires a slowing down, being present, and savoring every moment of its use. As you massage the oil into your skin, you will naturally be inclined to take long and deep breaths, and this will quiet the mind and soothe the senses. After massaging the skin, add a little warm water to emulsify this magical oil and then rinse with warm water and pat dry.

This oil can be used as a stand-alone cleanser, or the first step in a double-cleansing routine, and it effectively removes every bit of makeup, dirt and debris. However, if you are wearing particularly intense makeup Mandy recommends applying a bit of the cleansing oil on a cotton square and gently wiping away the makeup before cleansing your entire face with her Geranium Cleansing Oil. Once you dry your skin you will be mesmerized by the extent to which your skin is soft, smooth, supple and hydrated. Furthermore, the antioxidant-rich formula conditions and protects the skin and the anti-inflammatory ingredients heal and soothe irritated skin. This is the perfect cleansing oil, and I do not make this proclamation lightly. There really is nothing like this cleansing oil on the market, and I highly recommend trying it– you will be elated by its magnificence.

According to Mandy Aftel,

As I have gotten older (like, 70), I can no longer use commercial facial cleansers, so I created this new cleanser that's good for my skin and really easy to use -- a nourishing oil cleanser that can be rinsed off with warm water. Wild-harvested geranium essential oil was the best choice for the scent, with its gorgeous fresh, green, rosy aroma, and known for enhancing skin repair, reducing inflammation, superior toning, and anti-bacterial properties.

Mandy asserts that she, "created the silky texture and 'feel' of this cleanser using a plant-based biodegradable emulsifier and a blend of the following sustainably produced base oils in specific proportions."

Select Ingredients and Their Attributes:

- Abyssinian oil: penetrates the skin quickly and is easily absorbed. This rich oil replaces lost lipids, eases dryness, improving softness and texture.
- Rice bran oil: full of Vitamin A and C, protects and supports the skin, helps with fine lines & wrinkles, and tissue regeneration. Rice Bran is high in linoleic acid (40%) which helps the oil absorb quickly and deeply into the skin layers and carries plant nutrients to deeper layers.
- Camellia oil: full of vitamin E and anti-oxidants, is rejuvenating, and helps condition the skin. Camellia is high in oleic acid (80%) which helps maintain suppleness, flexibility and softness of the skin. It is highly compatible with human sebum and able to carry nutrients deeply into skin layers.
- Grapeseed oil: rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 and Vitamin E, is soothing, helps moisture retention and is nourishing for aging skin. Grapeseed oil is high in linoleic acid (74%)which helps the oil absorb quickly and deeply into the skin layers and carries plant nutrients to deeper layers.
- Cold-pressed Broccoli Seed Oil: is high in vitamin A and Omega-9, 6 and 3 fatty acids, which help absorb and retain moisture in the skin quickly without leaving behind a greasy residue. The smooth, soft, silky texture of broccoli seed oil protects cells and is anti-inflammatory.
- PlantaEm™ is made from the esters of glycerin and fatty acids and are very gentle, completely biodegradable and PEG-free. PlantaEmTM offers unique emulsification and conditioning characteristics and is good for skin! It is made from Polyglyceryl 6 Dioleate (and) Sorbitan Laurate (and) Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate (and) Dilauryl Citrate.

Directions: Use one dropper of the cleanser and massage the oil into your face. Massage a bit of warm water over the cleanser to emulsify it and splash with clean warm water. Pat dry with a towel.

If you are wearing particularly intense makeup Mandy recommends applying a bit of the cleansing oil on a cotton square and gently wiping away the makeup before cleansing your entire face with her Geranium Cleansing Oil.

Overall Assessment: There really is nothing like this cleansing oil on the market, and I highly recommend trying it– you will be elated by its magnificence. This is the finest cleansing oil to have graced my face, and you owe it to yourself to try it. A+

Shu Uemura Blanc:Chroma Cleansing Oil ($40.00-$82.00 for 150-450 ml from Shu Uemura USA and $46.00-$93.00 from Shu Uemura Canada): This lightweight cleansing oil is formulated to brighten uneven skin tones by gently polishing the skin to reveal a brighter complexion that is more even in tone. As a result, it helps to fade discoloration, dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and it calms redness. While formulated for uneven skin tones, I find that it has an overall brightening and evening effect, and therefore will appeal to a wider range of skin types. It has a light and pleasant fruity floral aroma that is neither overpowering, nor cloying. When water is introduced, this cleansing oil also transforms into a milky emulsion that gently removes every trace of dirt and makeup without ever stripping the skin. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple, hydrated, brightened and thoroughly cleansed. It washes away clean without any greasiness or residue left behind. While I do not have a lot of hyperpigmentation or discoloration, I do have a couple of small spots, but I have not used it long enough to determine whether or not it will fade them.

Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil ($32.00-$69.00 150 and 450 ml from Shu Uemura USA and $38.00-$79.00 from Shu Uemura Canada): This lovely cleansing oil evolved from the original Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil, and this variant was specifically formulated to effectively and gently remove waterproof makeup from sensitive skin. It has a light to mid-weight consistency that transforms into a milky emulsion when water is introduced. It gently removes every trace of dirt, pollution and makeup without ever stripping the skin. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple, balanced and hydrated. I don't wear a lot of waterproof makeup, but when I wear waterproof mascara it does an enviable job breaking it down and removing it. It has a light, clean aroma that is pleasant and refreshing.

While it deep cleans the skin, it does so exceedingly gently and without any stripping or drying. It thoroughly removes dirt and excess oils from the pores, and makeup and dirt from the surface of the skin, and it leaves skin soft, smooth and supple. When water is introduced, this cleansing oil transforms into a milky emulsion that leaves behind no oily residue whatsoever. If you have normal to dry skin, you may find this cleansing oil a bit too clarifying for your skin to use on a daily basis, and while I have normal/combination skin, I only tend to use it a few times a week, or as needed.

While it can be used by all skin types, I suspect that it will be coveted by people with normal to dry skin. When water is introduced, this cleansing oil also transforms into a rich and creamy milky emulsion that gently removes every trace of dirt and makeup without ever stripping the skin, and it leaves skin velvety soft and smooth without leaving behind a greasy residue. It has a warm and creamy aroma that I find intoxicatingly delicious.

Since I have normal to combination skin, I have a lot of flexibility in the skincare products that I can use. I can generally use things that are formulated for most types of skin, and make my selections based upon the needs of my skin at any given moment, and therefore that is how I determine which of the Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils to use.
