Aftelier Perfumes Patchouli Noir Perfume Review

Press Sample (Unaffiliated Links)

Mandy Aftel is an award-winning, and brilliant, natural perfumer who makes the most sublime fragrances, and their quality is truly beyond comprehension. Her newest fragrance, Patchouli Noir, is available in an Eau de Parfum, Perfume and Solid Perfume. There are also samples for sale, for only $8.00 each, that allow you to test the scent and select your favorite formula.
Aftel describes this fragrance as a, "A sumptuous perfume radiating a dark sensuality, Patchouli Noir is the perfect ménage à trois of boozy, woody and musky facets, draped in smoke" and this is such an apt and elegant description of this otherworldly fragrance. If your perception of patchouli is the pungent, edgy and ultra-assertive fragrance from the 1960s, then it is important to underscore the fact that this graceful fragrance has none of the hallmarks of those unfiltered mid-twentieth century permutations of the patchouli oil that could be found at health food stores. This fragrance, instead, is a captivating dark, smokey, musky and woodsy aroma that sits close to the skin and once it dries down it is the most sublime and balanced articulation of the constituent notes that define this fragrance. Against the backdrop of my personal body chemistry, a woodsy aroma punctuated by the ylang ylang and blood orange commingles with the patchouli, and the result is a warm, smooth, creamy and musky aroma that delights the senses in the most otherworldly way imaginable.

Character: smoky, boozy, woody, musky, smooth.

Fragrant Notes:
  • Top Notes: blood cedarwood, blood orange, pink pepper, damascenone.
  • Middle Notes: tomato leaf, ylang ylang concrete, spikenard, nutmeg absolute.
  • Base Notes: patchouli absolute, antique patchouli, patchouli EO, patchoulyl acetate, pine tar, ambergris, ambrettolide, cognac, coumarin.
According to Mandy Aftel,

A sumptuous perfume radiating a dark sensuality, Patchouli Noir is the perfect ménage à trois of boozy, woody and musky facets, draped in smoke.

This rich patchouli is created from four patchouli essences: patchouli absolute, patchouli essential oil, the natural isolate patchoulyl acetate, and the one-of-a-kind hundred-year-old antique patchouli. The sweet smoky darkness of pine tar causes the patchouli to smolder in the most fetching way!

Each aspect of this magnificent medley of patchoulis is enriched: the boozy facet by cognac and spikenard; the fruity woodiness, by a blend of blood orange, tomato leaf and blood cedarwood, and the musky by ambergris and ambrettolide. A wisp of floral counterpoint comes from the superb ylang concrete. Each facet is full of rich mystery and darkness, which is magnified many-fold when they are merged.
Overall Assessment: This fragrance must be experienced to be believed. The brilliance of Mandy's visionary approach to perfume-making is profoundly evident in Patchouli Noir. This is an extraordinary fragrance that is unlike any perfume that you have worn.

Mandy Aftel's New Book Symbolorum: The Secret Wisdom of Emblems

Gift (Affiliate Links)

My wonderful friend, and world-renowned natural perfumer, Mandy Aftel, has just published her latest book: Symbolorum: The Secret Wisdom of Emblems, and it is not to be missed. That Mandy is as brilliant a writer as she is a perfumer cannot be sufficiently underscored. Her creative genius and intellectual curiosity is evident in all of her endeavors, and her elegant writing is sure to delight all of her readers.

This extraordinary undertaking, in writing about Baroque emblems, is articulated with precision, but in a very approachable and edifying way. If you are at all curious about the iconography of the extraordinary emblems discussed in this book, then you will be utterly delighted from the first page turn to the last. This is a stunning achievement, and a book that is most certainly worthy of your collection.

About the Author,

Mandy Aftel, an internationally known artisan perfumer and authority on natural fragrance, is the owner of Aftelier Perfumes and the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents in Berkeley, California. Her other books include Essence and Alchemy: A Natural History of Perfume, which helped sparked the natural perfume renaissance and has been translated into sixteen languages. Aftel's work has been featured in the New York Times, Vogue, Vanity Fair, and numerous other major outlets.

About Symbolorum: The Secret Wisdom of Emblems,

Discover the esoteric insights and enchanting imagery of the Baroque emblem book, a long-lost cousin of the tarot.

The emblem book, which reached the peak of its popularity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, presented mysterious allegorical images―rather like those we now find on tarot cards―alongside Latin mottoes. A learned text explained the connection between image and motto, and the lessons each emblem held for the reader’s life. Drawing on sources such as medieval bestiaries and Aesop’s fables, emblem books reflected an enchanted view of nature in which our human lives were intertwined with plants, animals, the moon and the stars.

World-renowned natural perfumer Mandy Aftel first encountered emblem books in the course of her researches into antique botanical illustrations, and quickly became entranced. Here she presents one hundred emblems from perhaps the finest emblem book, the Symbolorum et Emblematum of Camerarius, originally published in four parts between 1590 and 1604. Aftel has sensitively tinted in watercolor the bewitching circular engravings of the Symbolorum, in which giant hands reach from the sky; lions, bears, and unicorns gambol; and distant spires beckon. The mottoes and explanatory texts are given in translation from the original Latin, along with Aftel’s own commentary. An illustrated introduction illuminates the history and magic of emblem book.

Symbolorum will be a treasure for anyone who is drawn to uncover ancient wisdom and feel the breath of the universe.

Overall Assessment: What a stunning book, and such a distinctly delightful and satisfying read.

Aftelier Perfumes Biblioscents Scented Bookmarks

Gift (Unaffiliated Links)

My friend, Mandy Aftel, is the artistic genius who created Aftelier Perfumes. She is not only a truly gifted visionary as a natural perfumer, but she is likewise an extraordinarily talented writer with an impressive list of publications. It is fitting that an award winning perfumer and author, of her stature, would create scented bookmarks, and no one other than Mandy could have done this so brilliantly. The visceral nature of inhaling beautiful fragrances while occupying the transformational and meditative space of reading is such a perfect pairing. These bookmarks are utterly uplifting and gorgeous. From the magnificent illustrations to the sensational olfactory experience that each of the bookmarks embody, this is one of the most extraordinary gifts to give oneself or anyone who loves fine fragrance and reading! I highly recommend Aftelier Perfumes Biblioscents Scented Bookmarks, and think that you will be truly impressed by the way in which they transform your reading experience. It deepens one's focus and brings joy to the experience in a very tangible way.
According to Aftelier Perfumes,

Rich with cultural and emotional associations of every kind, fragrances have the power to transport you to a different time and place―just like a good book. I created this set of four scented bookmarks―featuring the aromas of vetiver, geranium, frankincense, and ginger―to add a new olfactory dimension to the reading experience. These Biblioscents will be the perfect gift for every reader who seeks a sensual escape in books.

March 2025 Empties for the Face, Body & Hair

Purchased & Press Samples (Affiliate Links)

During the month of March I was able to finish up 10 full-size products for the face, body and hair, and I would happily use all of them again. I should state, however, that any product that I use up is something that I really like or love, and that I would happily use again. I stopped using products that I disliked long ago, and see no point in using them. I try to re-home or repurpose products that don't work for me, and use products that I really enjoy using! Here are my thoughts on what I used up in March:
Spongellé Sugar Dahlia Heart Body Wash Infused Buffer (Currently on sale for $10.00 from Spongellé): The smell of this buffer is delectable, the top notes are composed of Citrus Nuances, Solar Accord, the middle notes are a delightful amalgam of Midnight Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Freesia, Muguet, Neroli, and the base notes are a lovely musk. Purchase Again? This particular sold out, but there are others from this collection that are currently on sale, and new heart body buffers that are not on sale. I would most definitely use this again!

Mrs. Meyer's Lemon Verbena Hand Soap ($4.99 for 12.5 oz. and a 3-pack for $13.94 from AmazonWalmart and Target): is a glorious lemon verbena scented hand soap that is cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny Certified. It moisturizes the skin, and leaves the hands very soft and clean without any sort of residue. It has a satisfying lather, a delectable fresh citrus aroma, and it makes washing hands a joy rather than a drab experience. Purchase Again? Yes, I absolutely love this hand soap, and I just opened a new bottle!
Philip B. White Truffle Ultra Rich Moisturizing Shampoo: This is, without question, the most luxurious shampoo that I have ever used, and it cost an astounding $90.00 for 7.4 oz. It appears that it was discontinued, and it was prohibitively expensive, but it was rich, creamy, moisturizing and it had a delectable nutty aroma. I enjoyed every single drop. After I photographed it, I added water to get the last two uses from this beautiful shampoo! Purchase Again, if it was still available? If it was deeply discounted, I definitely would!

milk_shake Moisture Plus Conditioner ($28.00 for 8.4oz. from milk_shake and Amazon): This deeply moisturizing conditioner, which boasts the thickness and emollience of a mask, has a delectable papaya aroma. The conditioner is formulated for dry and dehydrated hair. It is also a lovely choice for the cold weather when the skin, hair and scalp are subjected to extreme temperatures that can really dry them out. The shampoo thoroughly cleanses the hair, and it rinses clean without stripping the hair or weighing it down. The conditioner offers hair nourishing hydration that leaves hair soft, smooth, manageable and free from frizz and flyaways. Purchase Again? Given the I cut open the tube to get every last bit of product out, I would say that I am sure to purchase it again!

The A Method Bubble Foaming Oxygenated Cleanser ($42.00 for 4 oz. from The A Method and their Amazon Store): is so kind and gentle on even on sensitive skin. This cleanser has a gentle bubbling effect that thoroughly cleanses the skin without ever stripping it or leaving it dry. Formulated for all type of skin, it leaves skin clean, soft, smooth and hydrated. However, it doesn't leave behind any sort of residue. It is gentle enough to use in the morning and evening each day. Purchase Again? I really enjoyed this cleanser, and never stopped using it once I opened it. However, I have many open bottles of facial cleansers that I need to use before I contemplate buying another one.

Annmarie Aloe Herb Cleanser ($35.50 for 1.7 oz and $58.00 for 3.4 from their Official Amazon Store): This is a lightweight and creamy Aloe Vera-based cleanser that thoroughly cleans the skin and leaves it soft, smooth and hydrated without feeling greasy or stripped. While it doesn't lather, it also lacks the heaviness of a cream cleanser. Instead, it behaves like a gel cleanser that washes clean. It has a wonderful light aroma informed by citrus, floral and herbal ingredients, and it is best described as pleasant and refreshing. It leaves my skin thoroughly cleansed and luminous, and it as effective as it is gentle. Suitable for all types of skin. Purchase Again? As I said above, I have far too many open facial cleansers to purchase another one, but I would definitely love to use this again in the future.

Aftelier Perfumes Geranium Cleansing Oil ($8.00 for 2ml. sample and $40.00 for 30ml from Aftelier Perfumes): This is a truly exemplary cleansing oil, the likes of which I have never experienced. My initial observations were informed by the disbelief that there was a permutation of geranium that was so otherworldly. One cannot sufficiently underscore the extent to which Mandy is an artist of rare genius, and this cleansing oil is a reminder of this fact. Geranium often has a sharp edge, but this golden elixir is warm, soft, slightly peppery and informed by a current of light floral notes. Mandy deftly selected each of the ingredients in perfect proportions, and the result is a balance of elements of which only she is capable. The aroma is the sublime embodiment of what geranium could only ever hope to be, and that could only be realized by Mandy.

The texture of this oil is impossibly silky and smooth, and its tactile effects are not only ultra-luxe, but it is likewise visceral in its ability to evoke unmitigated joy. Use of this cleansing oil, is therefore, profoundly experiential and it requires a slowing down, being present, and savoring every moment of its use. As you massage the oil into your skin, you will naturally be inclined to take long and deep breaths, and this will quiet the mind and soothe the senses. After massaging the skin, add a little warm water to emulsify this magical oil and then rinse with warm water and pat dry. Purchase Again? I would definitely purchase this again! A+

Aftelier Perfumes Vetiver & Frankincense Face Elixir ($8.00 for 1 ml and $75.00 for 20ml. from Aftelier Perfumes): I perpetually extol the virtues of Mandy Aftel's handmade Face Elixirs, and with each new addition to her perfectly articulated and curated collection she showcases the extent to which a boundless creative imagination and unmitigated brilliance can do what no one else can do. Aftelier Perfumes Vetiver & Frankincense Face Elixir is the most unexpected, sophisticated, refined and intoxicatingly beautiful permutation of Vetiver and Frankincense that could only have been imagined by Mandy. Her erudition is felt in the way in which her alchemical mastery pairs unexpected aromatic juxtapositions, and this new elixir perfectly underscores this point.

Mandy's brilliance is, in part, a function of this very ability to unite disparate elements into a singular unified heavenly elixir that is unprecedented in the vast sea of face oils. Each note, no matter how assertive, is tempered by the properties inherent in the other oils chosen. and her nuanced selections are a function of her intimate knowledge and intuitive ability to navigate thousands upon thousands of aromatic possibilities, and to then capture those most perfectly suited to her vision. She does not follow trends, and her standards exceed the expectations set by everyone else making face oils. This is one of the finest face oils you will ever try! Purchase Again? In a heartbeat, it's that amazing!

INDIE LEE Squalane Facial Oil ($38.00 for 1 oz. from INDIE LEENordstromUltaCredo Beauty and Bluemercury): If you are a quality skincare fanatic, then you have probably been hearing a lot of buzz about Squalane-based products lately. Among the features for which it is hailed a must-have ingredient in your skincare: its lightweight and non-greasy texture, its ability to lock moisture into the skin, its serious anti-inflammatory properties, and the fact that it is good for a wide variety of skin types. The anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce redness, irritation and swelling– therefore making it an ideal ingredient for sensitive skin, acne-prone skin and skin that is susceptible to dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.  This is a very lightweight and fast absorbing oil that immediately sinks into the skin without leaving behind any sort of oily residue. It is formulated for normal, dry, combination and oily skin types, and it helps to relieve dryness, dullness and uneven texture. Unlike many facial oils, this is made from a single ingredient: 100% squalane that is olive-derived. It has no fragrance, and it has a lovely silky-smooth texture. It immediately improves hydration, helps to balance excessive oil production, plumps fine lines and soothes irritated skin. It is a wonderful choice to calm and heal post-peel and exfoliated skin, and it leaves it soft, smooth, supple and luminous. Purchase Again? Another bottle is in my future, but not until I finish up some of my open bottles of facial oils!

Curél Intensive Moisture Care Moisture Facial Milk ($22.50 for 4 oz. from the Curél Amazon Store): This is just my kind of moisturizer for the warm and hot weather. It is lightweight, fast-absorbing, fragrance-free, non-irritating and incredibly moisturizing without feeling heavy on the skin. While it is intended for dry and sensitive skin, my normal/combination skin really looks and feels great when I use this moisturizer! It comes in a huge 4 oz. bottle with a convenient and sanitary pump dispenser and it does everything that it claims to do. Furthermore, this wonderful and thoughtfully crafted Japanese skincare brand creates luxurious products that are actually affordable! Purchase Again? While I would definitely purchase this again, I can't justify buying any more moisturizers until I use up some of my open bottles and jars!
Overall Assessment: I really enjoyed using these products in March, and have already scoped out what I will be using in April! What did you use up, toss out, give away or return in March? Any really great discoveries to report? Any disappointments? Any over-hyped products that weren't worth buying? Do tell!

3 Covet-Worthy Cleansing Oils to Try in 2025

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

I am a big fan of double-cleansing, and when I do– which is once a day– I start with one of my three favorite cleansing oils and then follow with one of my favorite cleansers. This has been my ritual for years, and I thought that it would be worthwhile to share my top 3 cleansing oils in 2025. I have used a great many cleansing oils over the years, and the top three that I am obsessed with are:

Aftelier Perfumes Geranium Cleansing Oil
Lovinah Supernatural Skincare Dragon's Blood Cleaning Oil

These three cleansing oils are nothing short of spectacular, and they are each worthy of the highest praise. They all have pride of place on my shelf, and they get used regularly.
Aftelier Perfumes Geranium Cleansing Oil is a truly exemplary cleansing oil, the likes of which I have never experienced.

This oil can be used as a stand-alone cleanser, or the first step in a double-cleansing routine, and it effectively removes every bit of makeup, dirt and debris. However, if you are wearing particularly intense makeup Mandy recommends applying a bit of the cleansing oil on a cotton square and gently wiping away the makeup before cleansing your entire face with her Geranium Cleansing Oil. Once you dry your skin you will be mesmerized by the extent to which your skin is soft, smooth, supple and hydrated. Furthermore, the antioxidant-rich formula conditions and protects the skin and the anti-inflammatory ingredients heal and soothe irritated skin. This is the perfect cleansing oil, and I do not make this proclamation lightly. There really is nothing like this cleansing oil on the market, and I highly recommend trying it– you will be elated by its magnificence.
According to Mandy Aftel,

As I have gotten older (like, 70), I can no longer use commercial facial cleansers, so I created this new cleanser that's good for my skin and really easy to use -- a nourishing oil cleanser that can be rinsed off with warm water. Wild-harvested geranium essential oil was the best choice for the scent, with its gorgeous fresh, green, rosy aroma, and known for enhancing skin repair, reducing inflammation, superior toning, and anti-bacterial properties.

Mandy asserts that she, "created the silky texture and 'feel' of this cleanser using a plant-based biodegradable emulsifier and a blend of the following sustainably produced base oils in specific proportions."

If you are wearing particularly intense makeup Mandy recommends applying a bit of the cleansing oil on a cotton square and gently wiping away the makeup before cleansing your entire face with her Geranium Cleansing Oil.

MILK THISTLE: Milk thistle was used in ancient times to treat a variety of conditions. Its a powerful antioxidantswhich can help protect the skin from free radicals and from the pollutants that surround us everyday. When used topically, it can also protect against UVA and UVB damage. All of these elements lead to premature aging, and UV radiation can even cause oxidative stress

GUAVA SEED OIL: Powerful antioxidants to help fight free radicals and maintain skin elasticity to prevent signs ofpremature aging and wrinkles. It is a natural astringent and noncomedogenic oil which can help withacne breakouts and reduce acne scars.Guava seed botanical oil has a regenerative effect on the skin. It contains powerful antioxidant, lycopene, known to target free radicals causing premature aging. Guava seed oil is also very rich in natural Niacin, vitamins A, B, C,E and  and plant nutrients that help skin maintain moisture, delay the effects of aging, tone and tighten skin.

CLOUDBERRY SEED OIL: Cloudberry Seed Oil is rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant that stimulate the production of Collagen, Vitamin E, Carotenoids, Phytosterols and Ellagic Acid - that protect from free radical damage brought on by the harmful sun rays and other environmental factors, like pollution. LINGONBERRIES: Lingonberries has exceptionally high amounts of antioxidants, plant sterols and essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. With a built-in anti-wrinkle effect that in nature keeps the berries from shrinking during frosty nights, whilst retaining moisture and elasticity. Lingoberry seed oil contains a high level of fatty acid Omega-3, but also the antioxidant gamma-tocotrienol, a natural vitamin E that is 60 times more powerful than its artificial counterpart. These nutrients help moisturize the skin, reduce wrinkles and improve elasticity. Lingonberry Seed Oil has the highest content of alpha-linolenic acid among the berry seed oils. Together with linoleic acid these essential fatty acids make up 85% of total fatty acids. The oil moisturises and smoothes skin, keeping skin youthful and vibrant.

SALICYLIC ACID: It’s a multi-layer technology, based on double encapsulation of Salicylic Acid. The Salicylic Acid is contained in sub-micron spheres (0.1-2 microns in diameter) which are then re-encapsulated into larger microspheres (30-50 microns in diameter). The wall of the microsphere ruptures when the product is rubbed onto the skin when in the presence of water. At this point, the sub-micron spheres are released onto the skin. Salicylic Acid double encapsulated  technology extends the release of the Salicylic Acid onto the skin. Itexposes the skin to small amounts of acid over a longer period of time, rather than one large amount at once. This unique feature allows higher levels of Salicylic Acid to remain on the skin for several hours. for better efficacy and acne-fighting power without irritation.

I have to confess that I am surprised that I only finished up 4 full-size products in the entire month of December. What's even m ore interesting is that they were only body products! I triple checked all of my skincare, haircare and makeup in my current rotation, and nothing else is close to being empty, but a few of them will be in January. Aftelier Perfumes Summer Roses Body Oil ($75.00 for 50 ml. Bottle and $8.00 for 2 ml. from Aftelier Perfumes): This is unlike anything that you have ever experienced, and as an award winning perfumer and an avid rose gardener– with a gorgeous rose garden of her own– Mandy knows as much about roses as most horticulturists and botanists. Mandy describes Summer Roses as, "a soft bouquet of honeyed, fruity, and slightly spicy roses on a summer’s day"– and that is such a poetic, and apt description of this fetching fragrance. It is such a surprising and sublime interpretation of the known permutations of the rose aroma. The honeyed and fruity rose aroma is underscored by this alarmingly beautiful spicy undercurrent, and the complexity of this commingling of disparate elements is nothing short of breathtakingly beautiful. It is the embodiment of the most beautiful, and complex, rose aroma transported in a warm summer breeze. This is my holy grail body oi, and it is utterly peerless in the vast sea of body oils. It is a true revelation. If you are looking for an exquisite ultra-luxe lovingly handcrafted body oil, then I highly recommend this gorgeous Mandy Aftel creation.

The nourishing base of jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil is lightweight, fast absorbing and it has a lovely silky texture. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple, hydrated and luminous. The veil of fragrance sits close to the skin, and invites frequent sniffs in order to be enveloped by its transcendental beauty. I have never loved a body oil the way that I love Aftelier Perfumes Summer Roses Body Oil, and you must experience it firsthand to see why I love it as I do.

Additionally, Summer Roses Body Oil can be used as a hair oil, and in that capacity it effectively fights frizz and fly-aways, conditions and moisturizes the scalp and hair, and it leaves hair manageable. The veil of fragrance is such a treat in the hair since it is ever-present throughout the day.

The elegant minimalist glass bottle is beautiful and befitting of the masterpiece that it houses, and it is so lovely that you will want to repurpose it after you finish Summer Roses.

I have used this oil for quite some time now, and cannot find anything that even comes close to this gem. Without question, this is the best body oil that I have ever used! Purchase Again? A million times over.

Overall Assessment: There you have it, I closed out 2024 finishing up 4 beloved full-size products! What did you use up, toss out, give away, or return in December? Did you discover any fabulous products, or some over-hyped duds? Happy New Year!
