Fuss-Free Drugstore Beauty Aisle Hits This Summer

 Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

This summer, whether you are stocking your house for yourself and guests, stocking your beach house rental or traveling, there are so many amazing drugstore finds that will keep you well-stocked for the season, and they will do so without breaking the bank. I have selected a few of my favorite drugstore beauty brands that I routinely pick up when I am wandering down the beauty aisles of my local drugstores.

John Frieda Haircare (Available from Ulta, Walmart, Walgreens, Amazon, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond): John Frieda is, without question, one of my favorite drugstore haircare brands. They have so many amazing products from shampoos and conditioners to extraordinary styling products. Their Frizz-Ease range is perfect for fighting frizz and taming unruly tresses, but they have affordable products for all types of hair that are well-worth trying.
Goody Hair Accessories (Available from WalmartWalgreens, AmazonTarget and Bed Bath & Beyond): During the summer months I usually wear a ponytail to keep my long hair off of my face, particularly when I am out and about. I also seem to misplace, lose or give away so many hair ties– therefore stocking up on affordable hair accessories is an absolute must for me. Goody is affordable and their products are high quality, and if you lose a few hair ties you won't be upset.
Queen Helene (Available from Walmart, AmazonWalgreens, Sally BeautySwanson Vitamins, Beauty Encounter and Bed, Bath & Beyond): Queen Helene has so many healthy skincare and body care options that are effective, affordable and a pleasure to use. I used their Mint Julep Masque as a teenager, and love it as much today as I did then. Their nourishing Cocoa Butter and Coconut Oil are perfect multi-tasking products to hydrate and treat dry skin during the hot months of summer.
Bioré (Available from Ulta, Amazon, TargetWalgreens, Walmart and Bed, Bath & Beyond): If you are finding that the hot weather is causing you to breakout, then Bioré has a wide range of products to fight blemishes, and their masks and cleansers are especially effective.
Whether you want a compact razor system for traveling, or a small facial hair removal device, these two products easily stow away in your travel bag, and they are both quite affordable!

Zim's Max-Freeze Crack Creme (Available from Walmart, Amazon and Walgreens): If you have thick, dry, cracked skin– hello calloused feet– then Zim's has a wonderful range of products to soften, heal and moisturize feet, elbows and cuticles. They also have a muscle and joint formula that is perfect for post-workout sore muscles.
CeraVe Moistuizers and Moisturizing Sunscreens (Available from Ulta, Amazon, TargetWalgreens and Walmart): CeraVe, which is a fragrance-free brand developed with dermatologists, is a perfect choice for people who have sensitive skin, and who avoid fragrances in their skincare products. Their lotions and creams a very moisturizing, and their sunscreens are quite effective. Additionally, when my skin becomes reactive and irritated because of the products that I am testing, I routinely reach for CeraVe to provide moisture without further irritating my skin.
Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant Lotion and Body Butter (Available from Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, WalmartWalgreens and Amazon): Vaseline's Cocoa Radiant collection, which is quite moisturizing, contains Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter and numerous oils that help heal dry skin while leaving it with a healthy glow. The Cocoa Butter scent is utterly delectable, and all of my guests agree since this jar and bottle– which have been kept in my guest bathroom– are nearly empty!
Live Clean Body Lotions and Body Oil (Available from Target, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Amazon and Walmart): Live Clean makes a wonderful range of body care products that are cruelty-free, and that are free of parabens, sulfates and other harmful chemicals. Their body lotions and multi-purpose oil are very moisturizing and leave the skin soft, smooth and supple.

Jason Tea Tree Oil (Available from TargetWalgreens, Amazon, Bed, Bath & Beyond and Walmart): Jason makes so many amazing natural bath and body products, and their body washes are family favorites. Lately I have been loving their Tea Tree Oil to spot treat a couple of heat-induced pimples that have surfaced, and it is natural and ultra-effective.
Curel Hydra Therapy Wet Skin Moisturizer (Available from Target, Amazon, Walmart, and Walgreens): This moisturizer is activated by damp freshly-showered skin, and it is so effective and fuss-free that it is perfect for people who often forget to apply lotion. It is by far my husbands favorite lotion, and in fact the only one that he uses daily. It is unscented, very moisturizing and it is phthalate-free, Sulfate-free, fluoride-free, dye-free and aluminum-free.
Sally Hansen Nail Polishes (Available from Ulta, Target, WalmartWalgreens and Amazon): During the hot Los Angeles summers, I often forgo makeup because I prefer a less-is-more approach when it is hot outside. However, I do like to have a nice pedicure and Sally Hansen's chip resistant polishes are among my very favorite. They are affordable, come in a huge range of colors and are easy to find in local drugstores.
No-Ad Sunscreens (Available from AmazonWalgreens, Walmart and Target): No-Ad makes a wide range of effective sunscreens, and their Sport SPF 50 stick is a water-resistant formula worth having if you are exercising outdoors this summer. It can be used on the face and body, and the formula is lightweight and leaves behind no white residue.

Ocean Potion Sunscreens (Available from Amazon and Walmart): Ocean Potion makes a wide range of effective sunscreens, and their Dab-On Spotstick SPF 50 applies clear with a matte finish, and was conceived for hard-to-reach areas and is also perfect for for the nose, ears, neck, scalp, hands and collar bone.

Bull Frog Sunscreens (Available from Walmart and Amazon): Bull Frog, which has long been a go-to brand for surfers, also has a wonderful Quik Stik for Land Sport. It is perfect for hiking, jogging or doing any sort of outdoor adventures on the land. The formula is sweat resistant for 80 minutes, and it goes on clear. It is portable, easy to use and perfect for the face, hairline, nose, ears and scalp.

Overall Assessment: These are some of my favorite drugstore products to have on hand this summer, and not only does my family use them, but so too do my guests. What are your favorite drugstore products this summer?

Empties Post Volume LVI: June and July 2017

Press Sample & Purchased (Affiliate Links)

Somehow the months of June and July went by in a flash, and I was so busy that I didn't have the time to do my monthly Empties post, but instead combined the two. I did manage to finish up a fair number of nearly empty products, and my success is not attributed to my will to finish them so much as it is a function of reaching for them because I leave them out in plain sight. This foolproof method is the only way that I am able to finish anything up given the insane size of my stash of products!

Surya Brasil Sapien Women Shave Gel (Reviewed HERE): This remains one of my all-time favorite shaving gels because it is ultra hydrating, it has a delectable tropical scent, and it gives me the closest shave imaginable. It is gentle and nourishing, and such an amazing addition to my shower product line-up. In fact, this is such a great shave gel that my husband still uses it for shaving every single day. Good enough to get again? Definitely.

Farmhouse Fresh Sweet Cream Fine Body Scrub (Reviewed HERE): This is a wonderful body scrub that features ultra-fine grain salt that feels wonderful against the skin as they remove dead skin cells. The salt granules are suspended in a wonderful base of nourishing and hydrating antioxidant-rich rice bran oil, and the end result is silky-smooth, hydrated skin that is unmistakably luminous. The aroma is an intoxicatingly delicious velvety cream that smells good enough to eat, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it! Good enough to get again? Definitely.

ClarityRX Get Clean Crushed Bamboo Exfoliator (Reviewed HERE): This facial scrub, which features gentle exfoliants suspended in a nourishing and comforting cream base, effectively removes dead skin cells without irritating or damaging the skin. Additionally, Bromelain and Papain enzymes aid the exfoliating particles by helping to dissolve some of the dead skin cells, and this combination of the two types of exfoliants make skin soft, smooth, supple and luminous. Good enough to get again? Without question!

AromaFloria Muscle Soak Body Scrub and AromaFloria Muscle Soak Body Wash (Reviewed HERE): These beautifully aromatic bath products were such a joy to use, and the deluxe travel sizes were thoroughly enjoyed during my travels. Good enough to get again? Yes, but I currently have so many scrubs and body washes that it will be quite a while before I need to buy any.

Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar (Review forthcoming): I love Dove bar soaps and have used them for years and years. The sensitive bar is so gentle on the skin, and it never strips or irritates the skin. Good enough to get again? Oh yeah, and I have several bars that I will open soon!
Jason Normalizing Tea Tree Treatment Shampoo: This is a really great shampoo if you have issues with dry scalp. I don't as a general rule, but sometimes when I am testing too many hair products my scalp does dry out. Another culprit, for me, is using softened water when I travel. For some reason my skin does not like soft water, and tends to get irritated and dry, and this shampoo definitely helps. Good enough to get again? Definitely.

Fresh Monster Toxin-Free 2-1 Shampoo & Conditioner (Reviewed HERE): These toxin-free 2-1 Shampoo & Conditioners come in fun scents that are neither too fragrant, nor do they smell like chemicals. They are fun to use, and so gentle on the hair. Good enough to get again? Yes, but I have so many shampoos and conditioners right now that it will be a very long time before I need to make another purchase.

Topganic Intensive Hair Mask with Brazilian Nut Oil: This is a very rich and hydrating hair mask that does wonders for my dry and curly hair. It really smoothes and tames the frizz, too. Good enough to get again? Yes, but I think that the company may have discontinued this mask, They do, however, have another variety that is quite good as well.

SACHAJUAN Hair Repair: I have several samples of this hair repair mask, and it is absolutely AMAZING! It is an intensive hair treatment with, "ocean silk technology for damaged and stressed hair." It leaves my hair soft, silky, manageable and frizz-free. Good enough to get again? It is so amazing that I definitely plan to purchase a full-size bottle.
Caudalie Divine Oil: Given my penchant for oils, I naturally had to try this one, and it really is aptly named because everything about this oil is divine! From the smell to the texture, to the way that it effortlessly penetrates the skin, and finally to the way it makes your skin über soft and unbelievably moisturized. I have only tried it on my body and hair, but from the moment that I first tried it I was madly in love. I used it sparingly in my hair and it left my curls bouncy, glossy and beautifully moisturized. I noticed that my body felt silky smooth and softer than you can imagine. What’s more, the scent is so intoxicating that I find myself sniffing my arm all of the time just to get another whiff! Good enough to get again? This was my second or third bottle already, therefore the answer is a resounding yes!

Amlactin Ultra Hydrating Body Cream (Reviewed HERE): This cream is very thick and rich, and it really is ultra hydrating. Unlike some alpha-hydroxy based moisturizers, Amlactin has the distinction of not drying out the skin. I have found that Ultra Hydrating Body Cream leaves my skin indescribably soft and supple, and it eliminates any dry patches that I may have. While this does not contain fragrance it does have a light slightly medicinal scent– one that is rather nondescript and fades quickly. Good enough to get again? Eventually, but I have far too many creams and lotions to use up before buying more.
Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Day Cream (Reviewed HERE): If you have deydrated skin, or normal to dry skin, then Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Day Cream is a perfect choice. It is ultra-moisturizing and hydrating without feeling heavy on the skin. The Hyaluronic Acid attracts and retains hydration, while the peanut and vegetable oils add moisture to the skin. This cream is fast-absorbing, and leaves skin soft, supple and hydrated. Good enough to get again? I would definitely use it again, but it will be quite a while before I need to buy another face cream.

Mario Badescu Peptide Renewal Cream (Reviewed HERE): This lightweight and fast absorbing cream, that is filled with Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid, leaves skin remarkably hydrated, smooth and lifted. In addition to nourishing the skin, it also makes skin radiant and luminous. Good enough to get again? Yes, but it will be quite a while before I need to buy another face cream.

Rodin + Fields REDEFINE Overnight Restorative Cream (Reviewed HERE): is a highly moisturizing night cream that has a thin consistency, but it is a very nourishing and hydrating nighttime treatment cream. It is very concentrated therefore only a tiny amount is needed, and it sinks in effortlessly leaving my skin soft, hydrated, supple and balanced. Good enough to get again? It is, but I have other night creams that I prefer.

LIERAC Paris Hydra-Chrono Intense Hydrating Balm (Reviewed HERE): This is such a lovely hydrator with such a delectable thick gel texture. It is very nourishing, hydrating and calming. It can be used day or night as a wash-off mask, or as a moisturizer. It leaves skin soft, supple, hydrated, plumped and luminous! Good enough to get again? Yes, but it appears to have been discontinued.
Savvy Wipes (Reviewed HERE): In the Klear wipes are lint-free, and therefore perfect for cleaning the lens on your phone, camera, screens and glasses. No Sweat wipes are antiperspirant/deodorant wipes. Both are perfect travel companions, and I always have them in my travel bag and purse. Good enough to get again? Yes, definitely!

Omorovicza Moor Mud Cream Cleanser (Reviewed HERE): is a gentle, non-foaming, cream cleanser that leaves skin thoroughly cleansed, without any stripping, and renders it remarkably soft and refreshed. Furthermore, it leaves behind no greasy residue that necessitates a second cleansing for its removal. Ideal for sensitive and dry skin, it is likewise a treat for normal to oily skin types as well.  My skin, which is normal to combination, experiences a pronounced clarity as a result of its clarifying and detoxifying formula, and it lifts impurities and gently clears congested pores without drying the skin, or leaving it taut and uncomfortable. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple and luminous.

It should not be overlooked that this cleanser is incredibly refreshing to the skin courtesy of the cooling blend of essential oils (Camphor, Peppermint and Eucalyptus), and one should most assuredly avoid contact with the eyes. That said, it should be stated that the cooling effect is mild rather than overdone and I do not find it in the least bit irritating to my sometimes finicky skin. However, if you have known sensitivities or allergies to any of these essential oils, then you should avoid this cleanser altogether.  Good enough to get again? Yes, absolutely!

Odacité Ba+S : Eye Contour Serum Concentrate: This fantastic eye oil is described as, "a highly nutritive serum is specially formulated for the delicate, thin skin of the eye contour. Rich in vitamins A, E and F along with plant sterols, baobab oil targets all signs of aging around the fragile eye area, helping to increase elasticity and reduce wrinkles. It helps relieve puffiness and dark circles, and has a delectable aroma. Good enough to get again? Yes, I was so impressed by my sample that I plan to buy a full size bottle.

Assorted Fragrance Samples: Of the samples used, the only one that I love enough to own is TOM FORD Neroli Portofino, and I do, in fact, own a bottle (that I covet). Good enough to get again? I can't imagine not having a bottle of Neroli Portofino!

What did you use up, toss out, give away or return in June and July? Any winners or duds to report?

Stocking Up Your Bathroom for Overnight Holiday Guests

 Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

If you are in the habit of hosting holiday events and dinners, you probably have your share of expected and unexpected overnight guests. When I find my house brimming with people, many of whom won't be going home at the end of the evening, I like to make sure that my guest bathroom is well stocked with things that they can use in case they didn't pack everything that they might need.  Given that you might not want to put your ultra-luxe, and expensive skincare, body care and haircare products out for general use– it is worth stocking up on more budget friendly finds if you are going to be hosting lots of people between now and New Year's Day. I tend to stock up on these types of essentials at Whole Food's Market when I am grocery shopping, and also my local drugstores. Here are a few things worth considering:

I have been using products from JĀSÖN  for many years, but recently started using their Smoothing Coconut Collection, and m thoroughly obsessed with each of the products that I have tried. All of these products only use unrefined, virgin coconut oil that is cold pressed from fresh coconut meat without, and without the use of damaging heat and skin-irritating chemicals. While this process is significantly more expensive, it allows for a higher concentration of nutrients, and therefore the products are much higher quality, and far more effective.

JĀSÖN Smoothing Coconut Foaming Shower Oil ($10.99-$11.20 for 10 oz. Whole Foods Market and Walmart): This heavenly smelling coconut shower oil transforms into a creamy cleansing foam when it comes into contact with water, and it gently cleans the skin thoroughly without stripping it. In face, skin is left soft, supple and hydrated. It also works exceptionally well for shaving legs and underarms!

According to JĀSÖN,

This indulgent shower oil instantly transforms into a delicate cleansing foam when it comes in contact with water, enveloping your skin in soft, luxurious lather. It does a great job moisturizing dry skin, and leaving it soft and silky smooth. It has a gorgeous coconut scent, but it does far soon upon application.

I use it in my hair to tame frizz and nourish my tresses, on my scalp, on my cuticles and as a body oil. It starts out as a solid, but quickly becomes a liquid once it is warm up between the hands. It is a skin saver for dry, chapped skin, and it is a perfect choice to keep dry skin moisturized. The scent is absolutely delicious!

Products:
According to Fresh Monster,

Meet Fresh Monster, a refreshing new take on getting kids clean. This exuberant lineup of affordable, toxin-free haircare is developed specifically for kids, but equally safe and effective for the whole family. And as a bonus, every product is represented by a unique monster, encouraging children to embrace both cleanliness and quirkiness.

Fresh Monster believes there shouldn’t be any tradeoffs when it comes to keeping kids clean and safe. Natural products should work just as well as conventional ones—and safe, toxin-free formulas needn’t be a costly luxury. Created by moms who have worked on the front lines of haircare (and know firsthand about the harsh chemicals lurking in personal care products), Fresh Monster offers a full line of toxin-free haircare made just for kids.

Star ingredients: All-natural botanical extracts; safe, plant-based cleansers; and fragrances blended from all-natural ingredients, never from chemicals. What you won’t find: toxins of any kind. No sulfates, parabens, phthalates, dyes, synthetic fragrances, BPA, soy or gluten. Everything’s made in the USA and, with no animal testing involved, it’s all PETA certified cruelty-free. In fact, Fresh Monster meets the highest standards for personal care products set by Whole Foods and the Environmental Working Group, no easy feat!
Miracleware Muslin Washcloth (2 and 3 packs for $10.90 -$18.95 from MiraclewareAmazon, Walmart and Bed, Bath & Beyond): Miracleware’s naturally absorbent 100% cotton muslin washcloths are very soft against the skin, and yet they are durable enough that they will last a ver long time. Muslin washcloths, unlike terry washcloths, become more soft and supple after each wash. They are not only great for babies, but in fact are fantastic for adults as well. I love using mine to remove my masks and cleanse my skin.
According to Miracleware,

Unlike other fabrics, muslin is soft and gentle on delicate skin. Scrubbing your face with terry cloth can easily cause inflammation, and many people make the mistake of over-exfoliating, which can lead to redness and even wrinkles.

But 100% cotton muslin fabric is easy on your skin, absorbent and gently buffs away impurities and dead-skin cells without causing irritation.

Muslin washcloths are also lightweight and fast-drying, so bacteria doesn’t get trapped in the fabric, which means you can use them multiple times before washing.

And chances are you’ll find this budget-friendly beauty secret at your local baby store for much cheaper than a specialty beauty store.
