5 Tips to Prep Hair for Summer

Fabian Lliguin, Rahua Co-founder, President, and New York Hairdresser provides 5 best tips for prepping hair pre-summer:

1. THE FRIZZ FACTOR: The humidity of warmer weather often results in frizzy hair. Dry, porous hair is attracted to the moisture (water) in the air which causes the cuticle to swell and change texture. The best way to avoid this is to keep your hair as hydrated as possible. One of the best ways to do this is to use plant-based ingredients which create a natural protective barrier on the hair. Using a regimen of hydrating products such as Rahua Hydration Shampoo, Hydration Conditioner (Reviewed HERE) and Hydration Detangler + UV Barrier will combat this phenomenon and help keep frizz at bay.

2. PROTECT YOUR SCALP FROM THE SUN: We all spend time putting sunscreens all over our face and body, but often forget that the scalp gets sunburned, too. Of course, covering your head with a hat or bandana will protect the scalp, but we aren’t wearing a hat every day. Protecting and caring for your scalp is essential by using a scalp treatment. Rahua Founder’s Blend Scalp and Hair Treatment (Reviewed HERE) is a non-toxic, plant powered treatment created with Hemp oil, Rahua oil and Palo Santo oil to strengthen follicles and balance the scalp’s microbiome. It’s nourishing for both the scalp and strands. You can spot treat or apply a light coat before hitting the beach or out in the sun to protect it and reap the benefits.

3. KEEP UP WITH HAIRCUTS: Regular trims during the summer is key to keeping the ends free of split ends and providing a healthy appearance. Using a product like Rahua Leave-In Treatment or Leave-In Treatment Light (for finer hair) (Reviewed HERE) helps to protect the ends and allow for good hair growth.

4. HAIR UNPLUGGED: Take a break from blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, etc. and let your hair air dry! Prepping the hair with Rahua Hydration Detangler + UV Barrier or Rahua Control Cream are the perfect hair primers. The moisturizing formula of Rahua Hydration Detangler + UV Barrier not only detangles and blocks humidity, but leaves hair soft, smooth, and manageable. This is the time of the year to accentuate your own natural texture rather than fighting it. Products like Rahua Control Cream, Freestyle Texturizer and Enchanted Island Salt Spray are perfect for air dry styling to accentuate texture, waves, and curls.

5. MASKS ARE IN: Hair masks are a wonderful way to keep hair in optimum health. It’s a step that people often  feel they don’t have time for but applying a mask during the day and wearing your hair up is a great way to benefit from a treatment. You can do it before you hit the beach or just under a cap when you’re out and about. Rahua Omega 9 Hair Mask (Reviewed HERE), created with pure Symbiotic® natural Amazonian ingredients, deeply penetrates the hair shaft leaving hair strong, shiny, and revitalized.  Plus, the lavender and eucalyptus scent provides an uplifting, aromatherapy experience.

Nini Organics Natural Detox Foam ($52.00 value): This delectable detox foam is an ultra-finely milled powder cleanser, with a luscious minty aroma, that transforms into a creamy dreamy foamy mousse with a few drops of water. While you could certainly mix it in a bowl, I prefer to cup my hand and mix it with my finger, and then apply it directly to me face. Boxwalla posits that it can be used as a first cleanse if you aren't wearing makeup and a second cleanse if you are.

The coconut-based foaming agent gives this cleanser its creamy texture and the green clay deeply cleans the skin. Ingredients such as white willow bark gently exfoliates and helps fight acne without stripping the skin. This magical powder is filled with nourishing and antioxidant-rich ingredients, such as neem, spirulina, broccoli and baobab extracts, camu camu and goji that leave skin soft, smooth, supple and luminous.

According to Nini Organics,

Natura Detox Foam is a unique water-free foaming cleanser supercharged with detoxifying dried vegetables and super antioxidants. A super gentle foaming agent derived from Coconuts helps create a super effective foaming cleanser. Broccoli powder rich in vitamin C & A helps to mop up all the daily pollutants and free radical damage whilst Organic Baobab powder helps promote skin’s collagen formation, boosting skin’s natural elasticity and smoothness. White Willow Bark contains salicylic acid which gently exfoliates your skin helping to fight acne / hormonal breakouts leaving your skin feeling fresh and looking radiant. Organic Goji Berry powder is rich in antioxidants helping to further reduce environmental damage.
Directions: Use 2/3 times a week as a recharging cleanser designed to give your skin a full detoxifying cleanse. Add a small amount to the palm of your hand, slowly add droplets of fresh water to create a supercharged foam ready to deeply & effectively cleanse your skin. Apply in circular motions onto dry skin adding more water to activate more foam, massage in for around 30 seconds before washing off with cold water for a more refreshing feel.

NINI Tip: Mix with our Coffee & Cacao Face Scrub for a more exfoliating cleanser or use as a second cleanse to our Halo Cleansing Elixir. Can also be used as a second cleanse to any existing routine.

Please Note: The subscriber bottles will come in the newly designed outer boxes that are under production.

Pai Skincare Sea Aster & Wild Oat Instant Calm Redness Serum ($78.00 value): This serum has the texture of a lovely light and emollient water-based lotion, and it is formulated to calm and soothe skin and to reduce redness and irritation. Furthermore, it nourishes and hydrates, pampers sensitive skin without any irritation and it leaves it comfortable, soft, supple and luminous. It has a very very light herbal aroma, but it is so faint that it isn't detectable on the skin.

According to Pai,

Our Instant Calm Redness Serum is expertly formulated restore calm and confidence to reactive complexions. This lightweight and hydrating serum is enriched with Sea Aster, a flowering plant that actively calms troubled skin and reduces visible redness and blotchiness. Combined with Wild Oat, rich source of Oleic and Linoleic fatty acids, it helps to comfort areas of dryness and soothe sensitivity. To reduce flare-ups caused by dehydration and dryness, this ultra gentle formula is carefully balanced with filtered water.

This serum is free from ingredients thought to dry or irritate redness, Eczema and Rosacea-prone skin, including: Alcohol (denat.), Benzoyl Peroxide, Synthetic Fragrance, Methylisothiazolinone (MI), Phenoxyethanol and Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate.

As well as instantly calming flushed skin, Sea Aster also strengthens surface blood vessels to improve and prevent redness over time.
Directions: Massage 1 pump into clean skin at night.

Boxwalla asserts: I use this after a toner/hydrating mist and under an oil and cream/balm, as you would a hydrating water based serum. It also layers beautifully under Monastery Aloe. It is very versatile - If you experience redness, in addition to using it as a serum, you can also dab on red areas after your skincare routine. It is also useful to layer under more active serum if you want a bit of a buffer while using active serums.

African Botanics Marula Botanical Hand Cream ($55.00 value): The ultra-emollient luxury oil-infused cream boasts a refreshingly creamy lightweight texture that sinks into the skin immediately and doesn't leave hands in the least bit greasy. If you adhere to the belief that one needs to use thick and greasy hand creams in order to stave-off and heal dry and chapped hands, then you will be astonished by the efficacy of this ingenious hand cream.  In fact, I think that it is more accurate to classify Marula Botanical Hand Cream as a cutting-edge antioxidant-rich anti-aging serum/cream hybrid that protects, nourishes, hydrates, soothes, brightens and repairs the skin with great efficacy.

Not only are my hands soft, supple and ultra moisturized, but they are left with the type of pronounced luminosity that I have only ever experienced in luxurious serums and beauty oils for the face. The delectable warm and earthy scent heightens the sensory experience of using this luxe hand cream, but it does fade soon upon application, and therefore won't pose a problem for those among you who prefer scent-free products.

It is noteworthy that the formula is very concentrated, and the effects are very long-lasting– therefore a single tube goes a very very long way.  If you treat yourself to one new body product this season, then African Botanics Marula Botanical Hand Cream should be at the top of your list. I kid you not, this hand cream is that extraordinary.

According to African Botanics,

Formulated to regenerate, repair, deeply hydrate, soothe, even skin tone, brighten and restore comfort. Reduces dark spots and lightens with Swiss Garden Cress. Protects and fights aging with Alpine Rose plant stem cells, plant peptides and Hyaluronic Acid while promoting healing.

Sinks deep into the skin and delivers vitamin rich restorative hydration providing an uplifting and calming aromatic experience with Wild Rosemary Leaf and Cape Rose Geranium. Quick-absorbing treatment leaves hands soft, soothed and well protected.

A unique combination of antioxidant and omega-rich Marula, Baobab and Kigelia oils calm, hydrate and increase skin elasticity. Mafura, Mango and Shea butters nourish, soothe and help reduce inflammation. Green Rooibos Tea and Swiss Garden Cress, rich in phytonutrients help reduce age spots, pigmentation and even out skin tone. Hyaluronic acid, Alpine Rose Plant Stem Cells and plant peptides visibly smoothe, strengthen and enhance the lipid barrier function to protect and maintain moisture.
Ingredients: Aqua (Spring Water), Aloe Ferox (Bitter Aloe) Leaf Extract, Sclerocarya Birrea (Marula)* Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Decyl Oleate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea)* Butter, Mangifera Indica (Mango)* Seed Butter, Cetyl Alcohol, Trichilla Emetica (Cape Mahogany Mafura)* Seed Butter, Lepidium Sativum Sprout Extract, Lecithin, Adansonia Digitata (Baobab)* Seed Oil, Rhododendron Ferrugineum Leaf Cell Culture Extract, Globularia Cordifolia Ferment, Kigelia Africana Fruit Extract*, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Extract, Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos) Tea Extract, Cyclopia Genistoides (Honeybush) Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hexapeptide-3, Pelargonium Graveolens (Cape Geranium) Essential Oil, Rosarinus Officinalis (Rosemary Leaf) Essential Oil, Citrus Aurantium (Neroli) Essential Oil, Maltodextrin, Tocopherol (Vitamin E). *Organic and Wild-Harvested Ingredients.
Overall Assessment: Not only are each of the products in the June Box extraordinary, but the value is unbelievable! I highly recommend Boxwalla June Beauty Box: Three Ways to Savor Summer (With a Little Help From My Friends). A+

May Empties 2020

Press Sample and Purchased (Affiliate Links)

The months seem to be blurring together since we have been under a stay-at-home order, and it really seems as though I just did an empties post for April! As you can clearly see, I am using up a lot of bars of soap each month with all of the necessary hand-washing, and the other products just tend to be daily use items.

LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant ($14.00 for 1.7 oz. from LAVANILA, Amazon and Ulta): LAVANILA makes wonderful healthy deodorants that are effective and smell wonderful (though they also make an unscented variant for sensitive skin). Their Vanilla Grapefruit scent is probably my favorite because it smells utterly scrumptious, and offers long-lasting protection. Purchase Again? I already have a replacement!

Fleur's Delightful Body Exfoliating Mist ($53.50 for 3.3 oz. from LeSpa USA): I am thoroughly obsessed with this exfoliating body mist– it is unlike anything else that I have tried. It has the most gorgeous floral aroma, it hydrates and refreshes the skin, and it effectively exfoliates dead skin cells. Simply spray it on your body, gently massage the skin and let it do the rest. Purchase Again? Maybe eventually, but I already have a couple of foaming and gel body exfoliants that I need to use up first.

LAVANILA Vanilla Grapefruit Rollerball ($19.00 for 0.33 oz. from LAVANILA and Ulta): This combination of warm Madagascar Vanilla and tangy pink grapefruit is such an unexpected surprise. The vanilla warms up grapefruit and transforms it into a creamy, warm citrus. Purchase Again? I have a full size bottle that I am currently using!

Tom Ford Jasmin Rouge Perfume ($240.00 for 1.7 oz. from Sephora and Nordstrom): Tom Ford Jasmin Rouge Perfume (sample): I love this scent! According to Tom Ford, "Voluptuous, sensuous and audacious, TOM FORD Jasmin Rouge is a saturated, spiced floral. An unexpected blend of precious sambac jasmine sepals absolute—an ingredient never used before in perfumery—with dusky clary sage and rich spices." Purchase Again? I would definitely consider purchasing a small bottle, but I need to use up a few of my perfumes first.
MegRhythm Gentle Steam Eye Mask ($10.99-$17.77 for 7 masks from Yes Style Global and Amazon): If you are looking for serious stress relief, MegRhythm Steam Eye Mask, which stays at a comfortable temperature for 10 minutes, bathes "eyes and the delicate eye area in warm steam. This 'steam bath for the eyes' helps with deep release of the tension of the day and soothes the mind. Purchase Again? I have two full boxes, and I will definitely repurchase when they are nearly empty!

Flowerspice Modern Apothecary Soothe and Repair Daily Moisturiser Rose & Coriander with Prickly Pear and Aloe Vera ($82.00 value from Boxwalla): This ultra-creamy moisturizer is rich, and yet luxuriously light and fast absorbing– it melts into the skin immediately, and it leaves behind no greasy residue whatsoever. It leaves skin remarkably soft, supple, lightly plumped, hydrated and luminous. It has a wonderful scent that is informed by the Rose and Coriander– thus it has a lightly spicy floral aroma that is utterly beautiful. Purchase Again? I definitely will once I finish up a couple of my open face creams, this stuff is sensational!
Artnaturals Hair Argan Oil Conditioner ($26.00 for 16 oz. each from Target): This conditioner, which is enriched with Argan Oil, is formulated to condition and protect hair while moisturizing, strengthening and enhancing manageability. This formula is safe for color-treated hair, gentle enough for curly dry hair, and it doesn't weigh down fine hair. Furthermore, it leaves hair soft, shiny, manageable and adds volume to lifeless tresses. It has a light scent that is clean and not long-lasting. Purchase Again? I already have a replacement bottle!

Mario Badescu A.H.A. Botanical Body Soap ($8.00 for 8 oz. and $14.00 for 16 oz. from Ulta and Nordstrom): This Alpha Hydroxy Acid body wash effectively exfoliates dead skin cells without any exfoliating particles, and it does so without stripping the skin in the least bit. It has a nice lather and a pleasant subtle aroma and it leaves skin soft and supple. I only use it where I seek exfoliation, and then use a non-exfoliating body wash elsewhere. Purchase Again? Just as soon as I finish up a few more body washes.

June Jacobs Fresh Squeezed Lemon Cleanser ($44.00 for 6.7 oz. from June Jacobs and Walmart): This wonderfully uplifting aromatic lemon cleanser is lightly lathering, non-stripping, and gentle enough for daily use. It effectively sweeps away dirt and makeup without ever drying or over-working the skin. The nourishing formula leaves skin feeling fresh, clean, soft and supple. Purchase Again? While I would definitely use this again, I am currently swimming in facial cleansers, so I won't need another for quite a while.
Dove Pink Beauty Bar ($2.99-$12.99 for 2-14 bar packs from Target and Walgreens): This creamy cleanser contains ¼ moisturizing cream to help make skin soft, smooth and hydrated. It doesn't strip skin in the least, nor does it leave it taut. Purchase Again? Most definitely! I already have more bars!

Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar ($3.19-$12.99 for 2-14 bar packs from TargetWalgreens and Bed, Bath & Beyond): If you have sensitive skin, then you likely seek a gentle cleansing bar that will neither strip, nor dry out your skin, and this bar definitely delivers. Furthermore, this bar leaves skin soft, smooth and not in the least bit taut. Purchase Again? Most definitely! I already have more bars!

Nubian Heritage Olive Oil & Green Tea Bar Soap ($4.99 for 5 oz. from Nubian HeritageiHerbThe Vitamin Shoppe and Swanson Vitamins): This wonderful bar soap has a rich and emollient lather that is neither stripping, nor is it in the least bit drying. In fact, it hydrates and nourishes the skin while the green tea leaves offer gentle exfoliation for the removal of dead skin cells. The aroma is intoxicating and exhilarating, and it fills the shower with its fresh green essence. Purchase Again? Oh yes!

L'Occitane Extra Gentle Soaps ($14.00 for 8.8 oz. from Sephora and Skin Store): You simply can't go wrong with any of L'Occitane's beautiful, and moisturizing soaps. I prefer to buy the large bars since they last for such a long time. Purchase Again? YES!
Overall Assessment: Well, there you have it. As you can see, I used lots of soaps and a little bit of this and that. What did you use up or toss out in March? Any real duds or winners to report?

Four Favorite Facial Exfoliants in May

Press Sample and Purchased (Affiliate Links)

I have been wearing no makeup (except for the periodic Zoom meetings for work), but I have been babying my skin since we have been living under the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, and my skin is quite happy. One of my very favorite treats is using a great quality facial exfoliant, and here are my Top 4 for the month of May:

Aesop Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste ($53.00 for 2.9 oz. from Nordstrom and SkinStore): This is a non-lathering cream-based exfoliator that uses fine quartz and lactic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. The former physically exfoliates skin while the latter helps to dissolve dead skin cells, and the combination of the two simultaneously removes dirt and helps to clear clogged pores. The end result is thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, and yet unstripped, skin that is rendered soft, smooth and supple. Furthermore, it rinses very clean and therefore leaves behind no greasy residue. One can detect the aromas of the Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, the Lavender Oil and the Rosemary Oil, and their combination is at once earthy, calming and very pleasant. This is well suited to my normal/combination skin.

According to Aesop,

Fine riverbed quartz contained in a cream base sloughs away tired surface cells while lactic acid offers a mild chemical exfoliation to leave skin immediately cleansed, soft and polished. Aesop product formulations use botanical and scientifically validated man-made ingredients of the highest quality.

Skin Types: Normal, dry and mildly sensitive skin, frequent travellers, shavers, winter and cool climates.
Suggested Directions: Dispense half a teaspoon into the palm of your hand. Work over your face and neck, including the lips. Avoid the immediate eye area. Allow the quartz and lactic acid to gently exfoliate by employing minimal pressure. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then follow with your preferred Aesop toner and hydrator.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Quartz, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Cetearyl Alcohol, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Ceteareth-20, Glycerin, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, C12-16 Alcohols, Lactic Acid, Ormenis Multicaulis Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Disodium EDTA, Magnesium Nitrate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazolinone, Linalool, d-Limonene.
African Botanics Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish ($75.00 for 3.4 oz./100 ml. from African BotanicsNet-A-PorterCredo Beauty and Cult Beauty £66.00): Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish is a very deep-cleansing facial exfoliator that effectively and efficiently sweeps away impurities and cleans out clogged pores. It is formulated with a combination of Marula Oil, Baobab Oils and Buchu Plant extracts that are punctuated by Micro-Algae and ultra-fine granules of ancient volcanic minerals. The fine granules, which densely populate this exfoliator, efficiently and effectively unclog pores, and remove dead skin cells, excess oils and impurities. Papaya and Pineapple enzymes help to dissolve dead skin cells, aid in cleaning out the pores, and make them appear reduced in size. Skin is left brightened, deeply cleansed and utterly glowing. In fact, the first time that I used it I noticed that it left my skin feeling as soft and silky smooth as ultra-fine velvet. Only the smallest amount is needed to achieve the desired results for the face, neck and décolleté, and the exfoliating particles are so efficient that you do not need to apply any pressure as you massage it into the skin. Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish Skin neither strips the skin, nor does it deplete vital moisture or hydration. Dull, congested skin gives way to youthful, radiant skin that feels amazing to the touch.

Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish has a wonderful earthy aroma that greatly enhances the sensory experience of using this exfoliator. While it is formulated for most skin types, people with sensitive skin should mix a very small amount with their favorite cleanser. I routinely mix it with Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser when I only want light exfoliation, but I use it alone at least once or twice a week.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Carica Papaya (Papaya) Extract, Ananas Sativus (Pineapple) Fruit Extract, Pumice (Volcanic Minerals), Vegetable Glycerin, Agathosma Betulina (Buchu)* Leaf Powder, Corn Starch, Acrylates, Sclerocarya Birrea (Marula)** Seed Oil*, Adansonia Digitata (Baobab)** Fruit Powder*, Cape Aloe (Aloe Ferox)* Leaf Extract, Lactobionic Acid, Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot) Essential Oil, Athrospira Platensis (Spirulina) Micro-Algae Extract, Pelargonium Graveolens (Cape Rose Geranium)* Essential Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Kigelia Africana Fruit Extract*, Aspalathus Linearis (Green Rooibos)* Tea Extract, Cyclopia Genistoides (Honeybush)* Plant Extract, Xanthan gum, Citric Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin. *Organic, **Wild-Harvested Ingredients. pH balanced.
MyChelle Refining Sugar Cleanser ($19.00 for 2.3 oz, from MyChelleThrive Market and Kohl's): is a thick, dense and ultra-creamy exfoliating cleanser that leaves skin very clean, soft, smooth and hydrated. It is gentle, forms a creamy and satisfying lather, punctuated by small exfoliating particles, and it never strips the skin. Since it is dense and very thick, it takes a little bit of pressure to squeeze it out of the tube, but it is very concentrated– therefore, you need only a tiny amount to clean your face, neck and décolleté. It has the most delectable warm and creamy vanilla aroma that makes using this lovely cleanser specially satisfying. Additionally, the Hyaluronic Acid keeps skin hydrated and soft. MyChelle products are cruelty-free and this exfoliating cleanser is made without GMOs, Gluten, Parabens, Petroleum, Phthalates, Silicones, Sulfates, Ureas, artificial fragrances or artificial colors, and it’s vegan.
According to MyChelle,

Natural sugar and intoxicating Vanilla-infused cleanser that gently exfoliates surface impurities as it transforms into a creamy, foaming lather—leaving skin radiant and refined. Boosted with anti-aging Matrixyl® Synthe’6™ Peptide, bioactive Plant Extracts, and Hyaluronic Acid to help keep skin hydrated

Directions: Dispense a small amount of cleanser on wet hands. Massage face and neck until sugar dissolves. Use more or less water to tailor your exfoliation level for your skin condition and concerns. Gentle enough for daily use.

Ingredients: Sucrose, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Canola Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Silica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Vanillin, Zeolite, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-38, Crocus Chrysanthus Bulb Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate (L), Sodium Polygamma-Glutamate, Lonicera Caprifolium (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Extract, Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Acacia Senegal Gum, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Alcohol, Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Benzyl Benzoate.
Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser ($42.00 for 1.7 oz. and $84.00 for 4.1 oz. from Tata Harper,  SephoraNordstromNet-A-PorterCult BeautyThe Detox MarketCredo Beauty and goop): is a truly fantastic cleanser that I have been using for quite a while now, and it remains one of my most reached-for wonder-products. I generally prefer lathering cleansers, but this one with its light creamy consistency, that is filled with gentle and refined exfoliating particles, is one of my all-time favorite cleansers. It gently exfoliates dead skin cells, unclogs congested pores and it hydrates, rather than strips and dries out the skin. Many moisturizing cleansers leave behind a greasy film, but this leaves behind no sort of unpleasant residue. Skin is left soft, smooth, supple and luminous. It has a very faint fruity aroma, presumably from the essential oils blend, but it is not in the least bit overpowering, and it does not linger.
According to Tata Harper,

This gentle exfoliating cleansing treatment acts as a 4-in-1 product to thoroughly cleanse and improve glow while purifying, minimizing the appearance of pores and helping to protect the skin’s natural hydration balance. Free of soaps, alcohols and detergents, this cleanser clarifies with fresh enzymes, clays and essential oils, while microspherical beads polish the skin and reduce appearance of blackheads – all without stripping the skin of moisture. Skin is left feeling balanced, hydrated and glowing. Minimizes the appearance of pores. Deeply cleanses and decongests the skin.

Tips from Tata Harper: Apply it on dry skin and massage into skin using circular motions, then focus on highly congested areas during a second buffing cleanse.

Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Cetearyl alcohol, Cetearyl Olivate, Helianthus annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Prunus armeniaca (Apricot) Seed Powder, Sorbitan Olivate, Oryza sativa (Rice) Extract*, Lactobacillus/Punica granatum Fruit Ferment Extract, Leuconostoc Ferment Filtrate, Aqua/Water, Coco-glucoside, Cetearyl glucoside, Kaolin (Rose Clay), Sclerotium gum, Cetyl Palmitate, Salix alba (Willow) Bark Extract*, Sorbitan Palmitate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sodium Phytate, Denatured Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, Aroma**, Benzyl Benzoate, Citral, Citronellol, Eugenol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool *Ingredients from Organic farming **Clinical grade essential oils blend.
Overall Assessment: These are my four May loves. What are yours?

Warm Weather Skincare Tips

Purchased & Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

While many of us are still under stay-at-home orders, due to that COVID-19 pandemic, many people are going outdoors while practicing social distancing and wearing a mask. In Los Angeles, we are in the midst of very hot weather this week, and therefore for many it will be safer to avoid exercising outside, and many will remain indoors in air conditioned spaces.

However, this is undoubtedly the time of year when we tend to spend more time outside, and as a result we often inadvertently overwork and under-protect our skin. Here are a few things that I have been trying to do to take better care of my skin this time of year:

1) Drink plenty of water. I know that this is painfully obvious, but it is something that I often don't do nearly enough of– particularly when I am on the go during the warmer months. Carrying around a good quality water bottle definitely helps remind you to drink water, and for me I either carry my 25 oz. S'well Water Bottle (Reviewed HERE).

2) Be diligent in your use of a high SPF sunscreen (at least an SPF 30- though I use between an SPF 30-SPF 50 most of the time). The key is to remember to reapply sunscreen frequently. I often find myself applying my sunscreen in the morning and then forgetting to do so again throughout the day. That first and only application offers us a false sense of sun protection, but it does not last from morning until night. I have forced myself to carry sunscreen with me to reapply it, but of course this means that I need to reapply some foundation, tinted moisturizer, blush, or whatever I am wearing on my face that day. While this isn't terribly convenient it is necessary, and definitely worth the trouble. It should be applied to all exposed areas, and remember that the harmful rays also penetrate your clothing. Vulnerable areas like the ears, back of the neck, the drivers side of your face and body, the back of the hands, and feet are most often neglected.  My all-time favorite sunscreens for my face, neck and décolleté are: TATCHA SILKEN Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 (Reviewed HERE).

3) Wear a wide brim hat. I try to do this when I am sitting outside reading- even though I do so under an umbrella.

4) Exfoliate Skin once a week to remove dead skin and to ensure that your skincare is penetrating deeply enough. Of course this should be avoided if you have sunburned skin, but if your skin isn't traumatized by the elements and can handle a gentle exfoliation then this will go a long way to allowing your products to penetrate more deeply. If you see any suspicious looking moles that have been changing shape and size- then avoid this step and go to your doctor to have it looked at. I can't underscore the importance of this enough- it is very easy for them to identify precancerous and cancerous lesions that you want to deal with immediately. I have had numerous suspicious looking things removed that could eventually become skin cancer.

5) Consider adding in an anti-aging face serum to help fight free radicals. Even if you are young and aren't seeing fine lines pop up yet, the benefits of anti-aging serums do wonders for scavenging free radicals.

6) Add a nourishing face oil into your rotation. They penetrate the skin more deeply and moisturize the skin. They also give the skin a beautiful healthy glow. They can also be used in lieu of heavier skin creams when you want something lighter and faster absorbing. Fear not, they are made for all types of skin from oily to dry and everything in between.

7) Consider adding Hyaluronic-based lotions or gels into your product rotation because it helps to raise the moisture level of the skin.

8) If you have a beloved medium to full coverage foundation that is a perfect match for you, but is too heavy for the season, then blend a small amount with your favorite facial lotion or cream, and you will have the perfect tinted moisturizer. Add a touch of primer and sunscreen, and then you have a BB Cream. When I do this I use the back of my hand to mix it- it's a fast and convenient method. I would still highly recommend using a separate sunscreen to make sure that you have sufficient coverage. Again, you need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day (approximately every 60-80 minutes).

9) Use a good moisture mask at least once a week, or as needed.

10) Don't forget about your lips!! Your pretty pout needs more moisture and protection during the summer. Apply a moisturizing lip balm with an SPF underneath your lip gloss or lipstick to keep them protected. Reapplication throughout the day is the key to remaining protected.

11) Don't forget your hair! Not only can the sun wreak havoc on your tresses, but the scalp is subject to sunburn as well. Use a deep conditioner on a weekly basis to keep your hair in good shape, and consider a good spray on SPF that is formulated for the hair.

12) A good pair of sunglasses won't just protect your eyes, but will also protect the vulnerable under eye area. Repeated sun exposure offers an express invitation for a whole flock of crow's feet to take up permanent residence on your face– so un-invite them!

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

PSA (#Repost. Unaffiliated Links)

Given that Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer, I thought that it would be a good idea to repost this valuable information about sunscreen since May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. Now is the perfect time to educate ourselves about the possible mistakes we're making with our sunscreen. Here, Dr. Rachel Nazarian from Schweiger Dermatology Group breaks down the 5 biggest mistakes she sees her patients make with SPF:

Mistake #1SPF still works if you use a little
In order to get the highest protection that your sunscreen advertises, and achieve that SPF number on the label, you need to apply a nice thick layer. Most people apply too little sunscreen, leaving skin unprotected, and achieving a sun-protection-factor far below the number written on the bottle. SPF should be applied at approximately 2 milligrams of lotion per square centimeter of skin, or about one ounce for your entire body. That’s roughly the amount in a shot glass. Be generous with your sunscreen and slather it on, otherwise you’ve got nothing but false sense of security.

Mistake #2Sunscreens are all the same
Sunscreen is divided into two broad categories: Physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens are thought to be superior by some dermatologists in a few ways. Unlike chemical sunscreens, which absorb the sun’s rays and can create free radicals, physical sunscreen protects skin by deflecting the radiation. Classic physical blocker sunscreens include ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and are a better choice for people with sensitive skin, as they tend to be less irritating than their chemical sunscreen counterparts.

Mistake #3SPF lasts, so I can throw it on and go
This is a very common misunderstanding--and a dangerous one! The correct way to approach sunscreen is to: Apply early, re-apply appropriately and replace often. Many sunscreens require 15 minutes, some even 30 minutes, before they are fully absorbed into the skin. Keep the application of sunscreen early in your daily regimen so by the time you’re heading out, your sun protection is already at work! You have to REAPPLY sunscreen often to keep the benefits going. At most, sunscreen remains effective for two hours, but if you’re sweating, swimming, or rubbing, you’ll need to reapply even sooner. And finally, remember the shelf-life. Using expired sunscreen is a common reason for sunburn. Most sunscreens have a shelf-life between two and three years, however due to its unstable nature, bottles open for longer than one year should be thrown out. Additionally, if the expiration date has been reached, or if the sunscreen was left outside room temperature, it’s less likely to adequately protect you.

Mistake #4I can mix SPF with anything
Sunscreen is super sensitive, delicate, and unstable. Mixing your sunscreen with lotions, creams, or other skincare products can dilute the active ingredients and reduce the SPF below what the labeling reflects. To wear sunscreen along with other topical makeup, rub sunscreen into the skin until it’s fully absorbed, and then apply makeup or lotions after. And remember, that makeup and lotion with SPF 15 doesn’t cut it! You need a minimum SPF 30 applied in a nice solid layer. Makeup can be applied afterwards.

Mistake #5I'm wearing SPF, now I'm safe!
I consider this the BIGGEST mistake people make. Sunscreen is best utilized as a SINGLE part of your sun-safety habits, along with other protective behaviors. Many people mistakenly assume sunscreen affords them the ability to sit endlessly in the sun. Sunscreen is not impenetrable, and its protection, although valuable, has limits. Efforts should always be made to seek shade, avoid sun during peak hours, and to wear photoprotective clothing. It should never be used as an opportunity to tan or sunbathe.  THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A SAFE TAN. Every tan is a sign of damage to the skin. If you’re wearing sunscreen, and you’re still getting tan, you’re not being safe enough.

MEMORIAL DAY REMEMBRANCE

Memorial Day, while originally intended to honor the fallen Union Soldiers from the American Civil War, became more notably a day to commemorate all fallen soldiers serving in the United States Armed Services. We honor those we have lost, have barbecues to commemorate them, and generally take pause to reflect upon what their collective sacrifice meant.

More recently still, this holiday has come to symbolize a day where we embark on more personal expressions of memory about those departed loved ones who we dearly miss. Many of these people engaged in battles of a different kind-  brave bodies nobly fighting terminal diseases until they can no longer battle their pernicious house guests, and in some cases the weakening effects of the curative medications themselves. For me, this day is a reminder of having lost my dad a few short years ago (who was a veteran of the US Army), and it reminds me of everyone who I have loved who is no longer here.

Today, as we face the Coronavirus pandemic together, I think that we need to reflect upon those souls who have lost their lives to this devastating disease. We must celebrate, and give profound thanks to the doctors and nurses who bravely care for those infected, and all of the essential workers who so bravely make personal sacrifices to keep all of us safe.

Join me in lifting a glass to honor the memory of all of the beloved people that we have lost, and all of those essential workers who bravely place themselves in harm's way to protect the rest of us.
