Springtime Skincare Update

After an unusually wet winter, spring has arrived in Southern California. The air is filled with lovely fragrant Jasmine, which is in full bloom in my backyard, and people are thoroughly embracing outdoor activities. Given the the change in temperature, it is time to make some changes to our skincare routines, and therefore I have a few tips for your consideration.

1) Drink plenty of water. I know that this is obvious, but it is something that I often don't do nearly enough of-- particularly during the warm months.

2) Be diligent in your use of a high SPF sunscreen (at least an SPF 30). The key is to remember to reapply sunscreen frequently. I often find myself applying my sunscreen in the morning and then forgetting to do so again throughout the day. That first and only application offers us a false sense of sun protection, but it does not last from morning until night. I have forced myself to carry sunscreen with me to reapply it, but of course this means that I need to reapply some foundation, tinted moisturizer, blush, or whatever I am wearing on my face that day. While this isn't terribly convenient it is necessary, and definitely worth the trouble. It should be applied to all exposed areas, and remember that the harmful rays also penetrate your clothing. Vulnerable areas like the ears, back of the neck, the drivers side of your face and body, the back of the hands, and feet are most often neglected.

3) Wear a wide brim hat. I try to do this when I am sitting outside reading- even though I do so under an umbrella.

4) Exfoliate Skin once a week to remove dead skin and to ensure that your skincare is penetrating deeply enough. Of course this should be avoided if you have sunburned skin, but if your skin isn't traumatized by the elements and can handle a gentle exfoliation then this will go a long way to allowing your products to penetrate more deeply. If you see any weird looking moles that have been changing shape and size- then avoid this step and go to your doctor to have your skin thoroughly evaluated. I can't underscore the importance of this enough- it is very easy for them to identify precancerous and cancerous lesions that you want to deal with immediately.

5) Consider adding in an anti-aging face serum to help fight free radicals. Even if you are young and aren't seeing fine lines pop up yet, the benefits of anti-aging serums do wonders for scavenging free radicals.

6) Add a nourishing face oil into your rotation. They penetrate the skin deeply and moisturize the skin beautifully. They also give the skin a beautiful healthy glow. They can also be used in lieu of heavier skin creams when you want something lighter and faster absorbing. Fear not, they are made for all types of skin from oily to dry and everything in between.

7) Consider adding Hyaluronic-based serums, lotions or gels into your product rotation because HA radically helps to raise the moisture levels of the skin.

8) If you have a beloved medium to full coverage foundation that is a perfect match for you, but is too heavy for the season, then blend a small amount with your favorite facial lotion or cream, and you will have the perfect tinted moisturizer. Add a touch of primer and sunscreen, and then you have a BB Cream. When I do this I use the back of my hand to mix it- it's a fast and convenient method.

9) Use a good moisture mask or a sleeping mask at least once a week, or as needed.  It will boost your hydration levels while you sleep, and you will wake up with dewy, luminous skin.

10) Use a lip balm with an SPF. Your pretty pout needs more moisture and protection during the warmer months. Apply a moisturizing lip balm with an SPF underneath your lip gloss or lipstick to keep them protected. Reapplication throughout the day is the key to remaining protected.

11) Don't forget your hair! Not only can the sun wreak havoc on your tresses, but the scalp is subject to sunburn as well. Use a deep conditioner on a weekly basis to keep your hair in good shape, and consider a good spray on SPF that is formulated for the hair.

12) A good pair of sunglasses won't just protect your eyes, but will also protect the vulnerable and delicate skin around the eye area.

I have been using Emile Cordon Cashmere-On Lip Pots (Reviewed HERE) for a couple of years, and their ultra-luxe lip balms remain among my very favorite lip products. Therefore, when they launched the Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balms I could barely contain my excitement, and I was thrilled when I received 6 twinkling pots of these gorgeous gems. Each of these delectably fragrant luxurious lip balms nourish, hydrate and lightly plump the lips, and four of the six that I received are beautifully tinted in perfectly flattering buildable shades. Each of these Miracle Lip Balms impart the lips with a stunning glossy shine, and they have the perfect amount of cushion for comfortable wear. They nourish and moisturize the lips– leaving them soft, smooth, supple and lightly plumped.

The formula is very concentrated, therefore only a tiny amount is needed to coat the lips. However, the tinted balms offer buildable coverage, and therefore you may want to add a coat or two to achieve your desired level of opacity and color saturation.

Overall Assessment: If you love ultra-luxe lip balms, then Emile Cordon Miracle Lip Balms are sure to delight you. They are expensive, but they are incredibly concentrated. Therefore one beautiful glistening pot will last you a very very long time. I am thoroughly obsessed with all of Emile Cordon Lip Balms, and these are among my most-reached for lip products.

As you already know, I am so excited by Lavido products. This cruelty-free brand from Israel, that was established in 2003 by herbalist Ido Magal, makes truly wonderful skincare products. Their natural and organic products feature nourishing, healthy ingredients that are high quality, and result in extraordinary formulations. I have tested several of their products, and am thoroughly impressed by the textures, formulas, aromas and efficacy. I love their Lavido Invigorating Facial Serum (Reviewed HERE), and was so excited to pair it with the Lavido Age Away Night Cream.

Lavido Age Away Night Cream, which contains Pomegranate Seed, St .John's Wort & Bergamot, is a lightweight emollient cream that is ultra-rich, but it melts into the skin remarkably fast. It is very nourishing and hydrating and leaves skin plumped, smooth, soft and supple. The Hyaluronic Acid does an enviable job diminishing the appearance of fine lines, and I observe a notable luminosity of my skin when I wake up each morning. This cream is formulated for normal to dry skin types, and it works very well with my normal-combination skin. This lovely cream has a light and clean herbal aroma, but it is neither long-lasting, nor in the least bit overpowering.

According to Lavido,

This super rich yet lightweight moisturizer hydrates the skin and helps minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This plant-based facial night cream contains hyaluronic acid which smoothes and hyderates the skin. Formulated with lime seed oil, organic pomegranate seed and evening primrose oils. Recommended for normal to dry skin.

Clinical trials showed that 97% of subjects experienced a significant increase in skin firmness, 77% of subjects experienced an increase of elasticity, 93% experienced increased smoothness and 93% of subjects saw a significant decrease in wrinkle depth.

Directions: Apply a dime-size amount to fingertips and massage over clean skin, using a circular upward motion. Recommended as the last step in your night time routine and to use after the Lavido serum of your choice.

Overall Assessment: I love the efficacy of this cream, and it is such a treat to use. I can use it alone at night, but have also paired it with the Lavido Invigorating Facial Serum when my skin is a bit more dehydrated, and either way delivers great results.

SALT By Hendrix Magical Rose Sugar Soufflé is yet another reason to fall madly in love with this stupendous Australian brand. As you already know, I am thoroughly smitten with the SALT by Hendrix Coco-Salt Body Buff (Reviewed HERE), but I actually might just love their Magical Rose Sugar Soufflé even more. As the name rightly suggests, it really is a magical scrub. This sugar-based exfoliator has a light and fluffy soufflé texture that is neither too dry, nor too oily. It contains a lovely symphony of oils that hydrate and nourish the skin while the sugar particles exfoliate dead skin cells–revealing soft, smooth, supple and moisturized skin. It has a light rose aromatic veil that is very soft and feminine. This lovely scrub is cruelty-free and free of toxic ingredients, and the sugar melts completely, and therefore will not clog your drain (and is safe for the environment).

I absolutely LOVE using high quality body scrubs, and do I ever have one to share with you! SALT By Hendrix Coco-Salt Body Buff is a delectable ultra-luxe natural exfoliant, from Australia, that is vegan, cruelty-free and such a treat to use. You simply add a little water to about half a tablespoon of the SALT By Hendrix Coco-Salt Body Buff, and mix it in your hand and gently buff the skin. It effectively exfoliates dead skin cells leaving the skin silky smooth, incredibly soft and supple. It has a very light milky lavender aroma that is calming, and not in the least bit pungent. Furthermore, it rinses clean and doesn't leave the skin, or the bottom of the shower, covered in an oily residue.

According to SALT by Hendrix,

Buff your way to smooth skin with our coconut based body scrub. Full of organic ingredients, this body treatment will leave your skin feeling moisturized and soft.

That it is the first day of spring means that I am thinking about warmer weather, and therefore this is the perfect time to introduce you to a wonderful sunscreen from MyChelle Dermaceuticals.

I prefer mineral sunscreens to their chemical-laden counterparts, and not only is MyChelle Sun Shield SPF 28 Coconut a full spectrum UVA/UVB mineral sunscreen, but it uses translucent Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Therefore, there is no pesky white residue, that is incompatible with makeup, with which to contend. Furthermore, it contains Vitamin E and Aloe Vera in conjunction with a potent blend of antioxidants that protect and calm the skin. It boasts a lightweight formula, with a clear matte finish, and it can be used on the face and body. It has a light and pleasant coconut aroma, but it is faint and does not linger.

Lavido is a wonderful cruelty-free brand from Israel that was established in 2003 by herbalist Ido Magal. Their natural and organic products feature nourishing, healthy ingredients that are high quality, and result in extraordinary formulations. I have tested several of their products, and am thoroughly impressed by the textures, formulas, aromas and efficacy. Given my penchant for luxury face oils, I was thrilled to test their Lavido Invigorating Facial Serum.

Lavido Invigorating Facial Serum with Evening Primrose Seed, Frankincense & Rosehip is formulated for combination to oily skin types, but I suspect that it will prove effective for a wider array of skin types. It is a very nourishing and deeply hydrating luxury face oil, and the first two ingredients, Sweet Almond Oil and Evening Primrose Oil, offer skin superb hydration. While my skin is normal to combination, it has been unusually dry and dehydrated this winter, and this oil has done an enviable job healing my skin this season.

This lovely oil-based serum is lightweight and it melts into the skin immediately. It is very concentrated, therefore no more than two drops is needed for the face, neck and décolleté. I apply it to freshly cleansed, and slightly damp, skin and the results are immediate. My skin is left soft, smooth, supple, hydrated and luminous, and its delectable light aroma is informed my a gorgeous amalgam of the lavender, rose and chamomile oils.

Defy the aging process, protect and nourish skin with plant-based fatty acids, minerals and vitamins from organic, cold-pressed evening primrose seed and almond oil. Lavido's Invigorating Facial Serum is clinically proven to show significant improvement in skin hydration, firmness and elasticity.
