I am a true believer in the anti-aging benefits of using Retinol-based products, and I am always open to trying new or new-to-me products that utilize this ingredient. Therefore, as a huge fan of StriVectin, I was eager too try their Advanced Retinol Pore Refiner.

StriVectin Advanced Retinol Pore Refiner is a lightweight daily lotion that was formulated to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and to refine and smooth the texture of the skin. While the 1% Retinol efficiently improves skin's natural turnover, and provides skin with a more youthful appearance, it does not dry out the skin as do many Retinol-based products. In fact, their patented NIA-114™ technology nourishes the skin and improves the moisture barrier– both of which help to mitigate the drying effects, and sensitivity often associated with Retinol use.

While I do not have particularly enlarged pores, I have definitely noted that mine appear more refined, and my overall complexion is markedly more smooth and even after using StriVectin Advanced Retinol Pore Refiner for a little over a month. My skin is smooth, hydrated, lifted, and my fine lines have been visibly softened because this formula effectively exfoliates dead skin cells and improves the overall texture of the skin.

Many people experience excessive peeling until their skin acclimates to Retinol-based products, but this formula is more gentle, and gets the job done without causing you to molt like a snake! The only obvious peeling that I experienced was a small dry patch of skin that I had prior to testing StriVectin Advanced Retinol Pore Refiner, and it was completely eliminated after less than a week of use.

Directions: Apply all over clean face in the AM and PM. Use as the last step in your skincare routine. Apply after sunscreen for an optimal mattifying effect.

Longtime readers know of my obsession with cleansing oils and facial wipes, and I now have two more to gush over! Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil and PreCleanse Wipes are gentle, highly effective, very pleasant to use, and very high quality. 

Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil and PreCleanse Wipes

Dermalogica PreCleanse Oil is a lightweight cleansing oil that melts away makeup and lifts impurities with ease, and leaves skin soft and clean. I massage a small amount into my dry skin, and then add warm water to my fingertips and continue to massage. The addition of water causes the oil to transform into a thin milky emulsion that removes all of the makeup and dirt once rinsed off of the skin. I don't tend to wear waterproof mascara, but it did remove waterproof eyeliner with ease.

Dermalogica PreCleanse Wipes are obsession-worthy wipes, and may I just say that I am thoroughly sold on these. Unlike many of the facial wipes that I have tried, these do not feel water-based to the extent that the others do. The PreCleanse Wipes are neither dripping with fluid, nor are do they require pulling and tugging the skin in order to remove makeup. Instead, theses oil-infused wipes effortlessly lift makeup and impurities with no effort whatsoever, and they leave skin soft rather than stripped. There is no need to tug or pull, but instead the ingredients do all of the work to remove every trace of makeup– you simply wipe away the dirt and makeup. Furthermore, these wipes remove every trace of makeup, and they do not irritate my super sensitive eyes.

That I have a penchant for high quality skincare products comes as no surprise to any of you, and my natural curiosity leads me to try many different types of lines and products. Therefore, when I was given the opportunity to test and review the Rodan + Fields REDEFINE and ACUTE Care products–  I jumped at the chance!

REDEFINE is a "comprehensive skincare regimen that layers cosmetic ingredients and proven peptide technology to help defend against and reduce the visible signs of aging for noticeably firmer, smoother, flawless-looking skin."

Redefine Regime is intended to diminish the appearance of lines and pores, and to address the loss of firmness.

REDEFINE Daily Cleansing Mask is an amazing non-foaming cleansing mask with gentle small polishing granules. I gently massage it into the skin and then allow it to dry. Not only does it clean the skin without stripping, but it also effortlessly removes dead skin, and it draws out impurities from clogged pores. Skin is left scrumptiously soft, supple and clean. This is a truly extraordinary product, and I will need a replacement tube soon!

Directions: Wet fingertips and massage a quarter-sized amount of product onto dry skin. Cover the entire face with a thin coat of product, avoiding contact with eyes. Allow product to dry, approximately two minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry. Use morning and evening and follow with toner.

I require only the smallest amount to achieve amazing results for my combination skin. I also note a distinctive and enviable luminescence to my skin that I normally only achieve with beauty oils!

Directions: Every evening, after cleansing and toning, apply a dime-sized amount evenly over the entire face, avoiding eye area.

REDEFINE ACUTE CARE Skincare for Expression Lines is a remarkably effective adhesive patch system that, "smooths expression lines with proprietary Liquid Cone Technology that melts line-defying peptides and hyaluronic acid directly into the wrinkle for a more youthful appearance. You can experience long-lasting results after ten applications, and you may even see results after the very first use. It’s so simple, you can do it in your sleep."

The ACUTE CARE REDEFINE Eye Cloths can be applied to anywhere you have expression lines that you want to treat. They can be used around the eyes or the mouth, and lines are visibly diminished, and skin has a smoother texture and appearance. I have tried them during the daytime and nighttime, and the results are excellent both ways. I will say, however, the first time that I used them I was surprised to learn that there was a slightly prickly sensation as I pressed the pads into place. That sensation quickly subsided and there was no discomfort– only an interesting sensation. (Retail $220.00 for 10 pairs).

ACUTE CARE Skincare for Expression Lines Ingredients: Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, SH-Oligopeptide-1

ACUTE CARE Directions:

STEP 1: Before applying ACUTE CARE, cleanse your face with Step 1 of your regimen. Skin must be completely clean and dry before you apply ACUTE CARE. Do not use any leave-on products underneath ACUTE CARE, including eye cream.

STEP 2: Tear open the pouch and remove ACUTE CARE from the transparent container. Carefully remove the white protective film and do not touch the delicate microstructure. For best results, use immediately after opening.

STEP 3: Position ACUTE CARE over the wrinkle area and press the adhesive gently against relaxed skin (do not stretch the skin). Gently press to activate liquid cones and smooth out any bubbles.

STEP 4: Follow with the rest of your nighttime regimen, avoiding the area around ACUTE CARE.

Removing ACUTE CARE:

STEP 1: In the morning, gently remove ACUTE CARE from skin.

STEP 2: Remove residue with REDEFINE Eye Cloths and follow with your morning regimen routine.

In the spirit of full disclosure, my before picture was taken after I only had about 2 hours of sleep (I worked an 18 hour day and had too much coffee– so I looked as exhausted as I felt). I then got a full night of sleep and used the ACUTE CARE REDEFINE Eye Cloths, and there was a notable difference in the appearance of fine lines, and the texture of my skin was soft and smooth. Each time that I have used these eye cloths I have noted that my fine lines were diminished and that the skin was smoother, softer and more hydrated.

Overall Assessment: I'm quite impressed with the quality and efficacy of the Rodan + Fields products that I tested, and I find myself reaching for them products on a daily basis. I am completely obsessed with the Daily Cleansing Mask, and it has become one of my current favorite cleansers. Rodan+Fields is definitely a line worth investigating.

I grew up hearing my mother say that the best way to deal with naturally curly hair was to religiously use oil in it to keep it soft, supple, manageable, shiny, and free of frizz and fly-aways. Perlier Shea Butter Softening Moisturizing Hand Cream with White Lily Extract is a thick, rich and deeply moisturizing hand cream. The texture itself, while emollient, has the protective textural quality of Shea Butter in that after it is absorbed it leaves behind a protective veil on the skin that keeps skin moisturized for hours after a single application. It is a very concentrated hand cream that will last a very long time given that it comes in a generous 6.7 oz tube. The flip cap squeeze tube packaging itself is very convenient because one can easily dispense only the smallest amount. The scent might best be described as a mild lily kissed floral that lasts for about an hour before fading into a slightly perceptible faint floral scent.

My hands look and feel unbelievably hydrated when I use this hand cream, and find it so effective that I have already decanted some in order to carry it in my purse. If you wash your hands frequently, or generally have particularly dry hands-- then this lovely hand cream is  well worth your consideration.

Overall assessment: I love the scent and I love how my hands look and feel after use. It will take me forever to get through this huge tube, but I plan to repurchase it when I squeeze that last bits from this tube.

Perlier Honey Miel Royal Elixir Facial Serum Review & Pictures

I have loved Perlier products for many years, and remember using their honey bath gel as a teenager. The moment I read about their Royal Elixir Facial Serum I knew that I wanted to try it, and I jumped at the chance to begin using it as soon as the opportunity arose.

According to the company,

My experience: This lightweight anti-aging serum has a very creamy consistency, but it sinks into the skin quickly and definitely leaves it feeling very moisturized. It has a very light scent that seems to be a combination of the honey and the Rosa Centifolia Flower Water, yet it does seem to fade after a few minutes. What I do find surprising is the fact that Perlier opted to include a micro-shimmer in this serum-- presumably to impart a diffused radiant glow. While it has a barely-there appearance on the skin, it does indeed give the complexion a lovely ethereal glowing quality. I almost always add a few drops of serum or face oil to my foundation or tinted moisturizer, so I thought that I would add a healthy pump of Perlier Honey Miel Royal Elixir Facial Serum to my foundation in part to see how well it performed, and to see whether I could detect the shimmer. I have to say, this is now my favorite way to use this serum-- skin is left nourished and hydrated, and my foundation now has that certain je ne sais quoi that makes it look just stunning. It's neither too dewy, nor too shimmery-- but instead it looks just perfect! It is a bit like adding a refined luminizer with skincare ingredients to your foundation, but in fact it is actually a skincare product containing some shimmer!

Overall assessment: A very nice moisturizing serum, but be forewarned that it does contain shimmer which may not please everyone. While it is a lovely serum in its own right, it offers the perfect boost to my foundation.

I am an absolute devotee to facial exfoliants, and have been since I began taking care of my skin as an early teen. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that I am always eager to discover new, or new-to-me exfoliants that are exquisite quality, gentle, and highly effective. When I saw the Beautisol Exscrub Me? Citrus Face Exfoliant available in the iFabbo shop, I jumped at the chance to try it!

Beautisol Exscrub Me? Citrus Face Exfoliant is, "a gentle, yet very effective citrus face exfoliant that is the perfect solution for deep cleansing the face, removing dead skin cells and eradicating impurities. Infused with certified organic orange peel, lemon and grapefruit extracts, it leaves the skin feeling cleansed, fresh and rejuvenated."

What it does: "Exfoliates and cleanses the face, preparing it for a flawless self-tan application"(or to just exfoliate the skin).

• Contains fine Jojoba beads to physically remove the dead skin cells

My Experience: Beautisol Exscrub Me? Citrus Face Exfoliant is a wonderful exfoliant. It is densely packed with fine Jojoba beads that effortlessly remove dead skin cells with great speed and precision. They are expertly crafted and uniformly shaped without any jagged protruding edges that scratch and damage the skin. That said, trust me when I say that one only needs to use a very light hand because this scrub is more than capable of getting rid of every trace of dead skin cells with a very gentle touch. The citrus peel and extracts, which lend this jewel a scrumptious scent, perform miracles by leaving skin cleansed, clarified and utterly refreshed. I was so surprised to see and feel how soft and supple my skin was after my first use, and that was all it took for me to fall in love with this highly effective scrub. Many scrubs have left my skin feeling stripped and sometimes even traumatized by the jagged physical exfoliants, but Beautisol Exscrub Me? Citrus Face Exfoliant leaves my skin baby's bottom soft every single time that I use it, and it works wonders in its ability to give me gorgeous glowing skin. If you love face scrubs, then this is definitely one to consider next time to need to replenish your stash. Those for whom particularly sensitive skin is an issue will want to be very careful not to over scrub since there are many fine Jojoba beads that might cause too much abrasion for the over-zealous hand.

To use: Dampen skin and apply a small amount of exfoliant to fingertips. Massage onto face in circular motions. Rinse well with warm water and pat dry.

Overall assessment: This is an excellent exfoliant, indeed! I'm a huge fan of physical exfoliants, and this one is now among my favorites! A+

Perlier Imperial Honey Body Butter: A Delicious Review!

Perlier Imperial Honey Body Butter has simply got to be the most scrumptious body butter that I have ever tried! It smells divine, and while Perlier describes it as "pleasantly scented with the sensual notes of honey and oriental woods" I do pick up a slight sweet earthiness to the scent. Interestingly, the scent seems to morph into a chocolate-tinged honey on my skin, but soon fades after application.

This "marvelous melting body butter" is formulated with the rare honey from African Black Bees that has been combined with Royal Jelly. This beautiful concoction deeply nourishes the skin leaving it supremely moisturized and hydrated. While I would most certainly argue that Imperial Honey Body Butter is well-suited to year-round use, it is absolutely and positively winter perfect! I realize that winter in Los Angeles differs markedly from, say, winter in Toronto-- but it has been getting quite cold at night here, and this body balm has been a skin-saver for my dry winter skin.

As you can probably tell from this picture, this is a rich and dense body butter, but it really does effortlessly melt into the skin. The texture is soft, creamy, buttery, but not in the least bit greasy or unpleasant. It leaves a lovely light protective veil on the skin, and the final textural presence is that of the high quality Shea Butter that was chosen for this body butter.

My experience: First I have to state that Perlier Volcanic Thermal Spa Scrub has a delightful fresh and clean scent that explodes when ignited by the warm water in the shower, and this definitely helps to create a delicious SPA experience for the senses. This scrub does an astounding job removing all of the dead skin and leaving skin feeling like crushed velvet to the touch! I also really like the fact that it does not leave an oily residue on the bottom of my shower as so many scrubs will do. I also love how quickly my body oils and lotions sink into my skin after using this delightful scrub. It is a new favorite for me! If you love body exfoliating scrubs as much as I do- then you will really love this one!

My experience: Ask any man "encouraged" to shave everyday by the traditional convention of his profession and you'll find that we envy the whiskered hipsters who've abandoned the razor. Though excuses why I didn't shave on any given day are plenty, often I just wanted to give my skin a break. Well, I may have just lost my best excuse not to shave. The shaving set from HYD For Men is everything it purports to be, and more. And after 30 plus years of dragging a razor across my face, the razor is now gliding back and forth effortlessly, leaving my skin moisturized and sans stubble. The Shave Cream has a pleasant citrus scent that is not overpowering yet still slightly invigorating.  For those of us that abandoned cologne in college, the mild scent is a plus.  Out of the tube, very little shave cream is needed to achieve coverage. The cream feels more like a post-shower moisturizer than a more traditional slick-feeling shave gel or cream.  The first time I used the shave cream I had not yet applied the razor shield so while the experience was better than average, I had yet to experience a paradigm-shifting shave. The next morning, after my razor had bathed in the Razor Shield, I had an amazing experience. It was as if I had a layer of lubricant on my face that kept the razor off my skin, yet it effortlessly snipped the stubble.  After rinsing the remnants off, my face felt soft and smooth. There were no areas of tightness nor did I experience any of the razor burn I was accustomed to before using this product. The Razor Shield also claims to increase the lifetime of your blade. I use one of the more expensive razors so I am looking forward to not having to continue raiding my 401K as often when I need new blades. Overall, the Shave Cream and Razor Shield have carved out a permanent place in my daily regime. The HYD For Men Buffer Stick is intended to exfoliate the skin, minimize the appearance of dark spots, lines and small scars, and prevent ingrown hairs. Used up to three days a week, it certainly lived up to its billing with respect to exfoliation.  How well it addresses the spots and lines on my chronically sun-kissed face remains to be seen. I used the Buffer Stick after shaving and it definitely made an impact. My skin was fresh looking, albeit a touch pink.
