Makeup Wars: Our Favorite Sunscreens

When the Makeup Wars! Team decided to feature our favorite sunscreens, I immediately knew that I wanted to share my all-time favorite sunscreens for the face. I never leave the house without slathering my face, neck, décolleté and hands with one of my favorites, and given that I live in Los Angeles it is imperative that I remain vigilant in doing so. I have selected an assortment of mineral and chemical sunscreens for your perusal. Here are my current fab four for the face:

Radical Skincare Skin Perfecting Screen SPF 30 ($55.00 for 1.36 oz. from Radical Skincare, Bloomingdale's, Space NK, Skinstore, Amazon and Dermstore): Just because it isn't summer doesn't mean that we shouldn't be diligent about applying and reapplying sunscreen. I have very a short list of favorite facial sunscreens, and Radical Skincare Skin Perfecting Screen SPF 30 is among my all-time favorites!

This non-chemical mineral sunscreen has a lightweight, nearly watery consistency that melts into the skin  and leaves behind no white cast or greasy residue. It dries completely clear, and it gives skin a gorgeous luminosity. Furthermore, it serves as a phenomenal makeup primer, and it utilizes "diamond encapsulation to deflect light and blur wrinkles"– all of which makes this skin perfecter something of an Instagram filter in a bottle. In fact, I have noticed that I can forego a foundation or tinted moisturizer because this sunscreen makes my skin look so even in tone and luminous.

It is very gentle on the skin, is completely non-comedogenic, and is a perfect choice for sensitive skin and for people with Rosacea.

KORRES Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil SPF ($35.00 for 1.69 oz. from Sephora, Dermstore and Skin Store): KORRES Skincare fans will fall in love with this sunscreen. It nourishes, hydrates and calms the skin while offering an SPF 30– therefore an additional sunscreen is not necessary. You will be pleased to know that it leaves behind no white residue whatsoever.

TATCHA Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 ($65.00 for 2 oz. from TATCHA, Barneys New York and Sephora): This is an ultra luxurious sunscreen that has been touted as a game changer since it hit the market. TATCHA SILKEN Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 boasts a lightweight and nourishing formula that doubles as a primer to extend the wear of your makeup while protecting your skin.

One seldom speaks in terms of elegance when discussing the anatomy of a sunscreen, but TATCHA has the innate ability to make exceedingly elegant products in even the most seemingly mundane categories such as sunscreens.

TATCHA SILKEN Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 is a thick cream housed in a beautiful blue squeeze tube. A light squeeze dispenses the perfect amount of sunscreen without any waste.

ZO Skin Health Oclipse Smart Tone SPF 50 ($70.00 for 1.5 oz. from ZO Skin Health): The necessity to use sunscreen simply cannot be sufficiently underscored, and I, for one, don't even walk to my car without slathering myself with a minimum SPF 30, but I actually prefer higher sun protection factor on my face, neck, décolleté and hands. These vulnerable areas of the body receive so much sun exposure that one has to be particularly diligent about protecting them.

I have used a few products from Dr. Zein Obagi over the years, but I wanted to feature two that are particularly wonderful. ZO Skin Health Ommerse Renewal Crème and Oclipse Smart Tone SPF 50 are not only among my favorites, but I am on my second tube of Oclipse– which ranks among my very favorite sunscreens for the face.

Overall Assessment: I'm very impressed by this face cream and sunscreen, and they pair together perfectly.

The necessity to use sunscreen simply cannot be sufficiently underscored, and I, for one don't even walk to my car without slathering myself with a minimum SPF 30, but actually prefer higher sun protection factor on my face, neck, décolleté and hands. These vulnerable areas of the body receive so much sun exposure that one has to be particularly diligent about protecting them. My family dermatologist also happens to be a well-known surgeon who scared me into sunscreen submission long ago as he told me about the skin cancer that he sees on a daily basis.

When I was contacted to test and review Zo Skin Health Oclipse Smart Tone SPF 50, I was thrilled to try this new innovative sunscreen. I had tried one of Dr. Obagi's sunscreens years ago, and thought that it was absolutely amazing, and therefore couldn't wait to see this new advanced technology sunscreen.

My Experience: Zo Skin Health Oclipse Smart Tone SPF 50 is a highly effective broad-spectrum sunscreen that employs advanced cutting-edge technology. Among the novel aspects of this sunscreen is its ability to match any skin tone, and it certainly did that for my skin. The customizable color beads, with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, somehow magically adjust to match any skin tone while providing additional protection for the skin against HEV light.

The nourishing formula boasts an exclusive proprietary 12-hour time release antioxidant complex that protects the skin against photo-damage.

The texture is creamy, soft and emollient, but not is the least bit greasy. It sinks in quickly allowing one to apply their makeup immediately. Overall Assessment: I'm very impressed by this sunscreen because it is so effective at protecting the skin, but one needs to be constantly reminded that sunscreen must to be reapplied every two hours to  protect the skin against the harmful rays of the sun. All too often, we run about with a false sense of security because we applied sunscreen in the morning, but forgot to reapply it at any point during the day. Therefore, even the best sunscreen on the planet is only effective if continually reapplied throughout the day. While I am diligent about applying my sunscreen every single day, I am not always as good about my reapplication. Recalling some of the stories that my dermatologist told me is all the motivation that I need to reapply my sunscreen throughout the day!
