Valentine's Day Manicure Tips from Skyy Hadley

Images & Skyy Hadley Tips Courtesy of PR

Whatever you will be doing on Valentine’s Day, whether watching rom-coms at home or going out, there is nothing more festive than a pink or red manicure. Enjoy these fun Valentine's Day-inspired nail ideas from nail expert, Skyy Hadley, to give yourself a stunning manicure.

A lesson in red: If you can't decide which color is your perfect red, just try them all at once for this monochromatic look (shown above).

Tips from Skyy Hadley:
· Always use a base coat
· Stay away from quick-dry nail polish (it dehydrates and can dry out your nails)
· Apply cuticle oil religiously
· Hold your hands under cold water post paint job
· Apply thin, not thick, coats of polish
· Always use a top coat
Pink lines: Simply add a strip of thin tape horizontally, then paint over in your favorite pink lacquer. Wait until tacky, then remove the tape. Once the color is completely dry, finish the look with a clear top coat.

Skincare Tips for the Colder Weather

Now that the cooler season has officially arrived, it is time to revamp and revitalize our skincare routines in order to keep our skin balanced, nourished and hydrated– rather than traumatized by the extremes in temperature that can wreak havoc on its condition. Here is a list of a few things that you can do to pamper yourself while protecting your largest organ.

Don't make the assumption that what you used on your skin during the warmer months of the year will to be a good fit for the needs of your skin as the weather cools down. This is particularly true if you live in a region with bitter cold winters. Really listen to the needs of your skin.

1) Exfoliate, but don't overdo it. It's important to remove dead skin cells so that your skincare products can penetrate more easily and more deeply, and therefore be far more effective. Over exfoliating should be avoided as it leads to thinning of the skin, not to mention unnecessarily irritating it, and making it much more vulnerable to the elements. Appropriately exfoliated skin will also allow you to use less of your skincare products-- thus making it more economical as well.

2) Add a moisture or hydration rich serum into your beauty routine. You don't have to spend a fortune either. Something as simple as adding Hyaluronic Acid to your moisturizer, or before you apply your moisturizer, will really bolster your hydration level.

3) Consider adding oils into your beauty routine. Oils are such a great moisture delivery system, and while they aren't for everyone-- they are the gold standard for many people (myself included). There are so many different face oils to choose from on the market right now, and they are available from those economically priced to those in the upper tiers of the luxury price range- so they can accommodate every budget.

4) Switch up your cleansers as you would shampoos. During the drier colder months try to avoid more stripping cleansers because your skin really needs to retain its natural oils. I rotate my cleansers all year round, but I am currently obsessed with Sponge Gel Katharistiko Wild Herb Cleanser because it is so gentle and hydrating, and it simultaneously deeply cleans the skin without stripping it. This is what is going to get my combination skin through the colder months- though I used it with great success during the summer as well.

5) Remember exposure to indoor heaters followed by outdoor cold air wreaks havoc on your skin- as it is given no time to recover from these extreme conditions (each being extreme in their own right). This is a good time to switch up your moisturizer in favor of something more nourishing and hydrating. You don't want your skin to look and feel like this, after all!! I always use a face oil as a serum, applied sparingly, beneath my moisturizer AM and PM. This leaves my skin super hydrated, soft, and with a gorgeous glow.

6) Don't forget your sunscreen- just because it isn't warm outside doesn't mean that the harmful UVA & UVB rays aren't doing damage! Don't forget about your ears, neck, chest and hands- they need sun protection as well!

7) Speaking of your neck, chest and hands-- don't forget to moisturize them!! They will bare the brunt of much of your exposure to the elements, and will likely age at a more rapid pace than your face-- in large part due to the fact that we so often neglect them. Do to these areas what you do to your face-- otherwise your face can end up looking like it belongs to a youthful man/woman, while your hands, neck, and chest will look like they belong to his/her grandfather/grandmother. Use richer creams specifically targeted for these areas, or just something richer and more emollient than you might normally use.

8) Consider a nighttime serum to help reverse environmental damage and the ravages of time. Nighttime is when your skin naturally goes into repair mode- so giving it a little help can go a long way. Many active serums contain ingredients that cause photo-sensitivity, and for that reason alone should never be used during the day.  It's also important to use a high SPF sunscreen during the day when you add such products into your routine. When in doubt, consult your doctor or dermatologist-- I do that all of the time!! Sometimes a little spot on the face may actually be precancerous, or worse yet cancer. Therefore, before taking it upon yourself to treat pesky spots with over-the-counter products, consult with your doctor. One can do far more damage than good when applying cosmetic and cosmeceutical products unwittingly to cancerous or precancerous lesions or spots. When in doubt- go see a dermatologist, seriously. I have had numerous sun spots removed that would have eventually turned into skin cancer. Your doctor can also look over the ingredients in your serum and tell you whether or not they should be avoided. My doctor is quite used to this with me!

9) Don't forget your delicate eye area- it may require a slightly richer eye cream during the colder months. This is tricky for me since rich eye creams often give me milia- so I tend to look for moisture rich eye creams that are lighter in texture, rather than thick dense ones that generally cause me so much trouble.

10) Don't forget about your lips!! You may want to exfoliate your lips periodically, but gently. They will need more moisture than usual- especially if you plan to partake in some of the seasons on trend lipsticks. My trick is to always apply just a small dab of lip balm under all of my lip products. This locks in moisture, and when applied sparingly functions as an effective lip primer. I find that a more matte finish in a lip balm to be more effective (i.e. EOS Lip Balm and Suki Lip Repair Butter), however you don't have to rush out and buy yet another lip balm-- try using your favorite lip balm sparingly.

11) And what about that hair?! This is a good time to use a clarifying shampoo to remove all manner of product build-up, and then use your favorite deep conditioner to keep your tresses happy and conditioned during the cooler weather.

12) This is also a good time to exfoliate your body, and perhaps to switch from lighter lotions to richer ones. I like to exfoliate my skin, and then with my skin still slightly damp I apply an emollient rich body oil sparingly. You will be surprised just how quickly it is absorbed when your skin is still warm and damp- plus it's a great trick to use less product. They come in all price ranges- so there really is something for everyone. I am as obsessed with body oils as I am with face oils-- I find them to be a very effective and pleasant way of delivering superb hydration to the skin. If your skin still needs more moisture- add your favorite body butter or moisturizer on top, and you will immediately see and feel the difference!

Top 20 Beauty Resolutions to Live By in 2016

1) Always Wear a Sunscreen: It might not be sunny outside, but your skin still needs SPF protection. We are not exempt from excessive UV exposure even during the cold months of the year. There are so many high quality sunscreens on the market that will not disturb your makeup, and that offer UVA and UVB protection. I was told by a dermatologist here in Los Angeles, who treats skin cancer on a daily basis, that one should never step foot outside without using a minimum SPF 30 on all exposed areas of the skin 12 months of the year. I apply sunscreen to my face, neck, décolleté and hands in the rain or shine.

2) Never Sleep in Your Makeup: This is bad for your skin for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that you are impeding your bodies ability to naturally and effectively turnover dead skin cells at night when you have skin covered in makeup and all of the grime and pollution that you were exposed to during the day. Additionally, sleeping in eye makeup can actually encourage infections like pink eye, it encourages swelling, and small particles of makeup can actually scratch the eye and cause more serious infections. Invest in some good makeup wipes to remove your makeup before you go to sleep when you are too tired to do a proper job of washing your face. I always have several varieties on hand for just that reason.

3) Use a Rich Hand Cream Everyday: During the colder months of the year, and especially during the cold and flu season, I wash my hands an astonishing number of times. Being a college professor, during midterms and finals especially, is a super germy enterprise. Students come to class and office hours sick– to the extent that I often have to tell them to go to student health immediately because they need to be seen. I also am handed piles of germ saturated term papers after watching them get sneezed on. You get the picture, working at a university is like working in a petri dish. So I wash my hands all of the time which leaves them very dry. I not only carry around rich hand cream everywhere that I go, but I also leave a few tubes on my nightstand and use them on my feet and hands before I go to sleep every night.

4) Just Because it's Trending Doesn't Mean it's Good (or that you should do it): Let's face it, trends come and go. Some are good, while others are regrettable and in hindsight end up downright embarrassing, and many are little more than marketing schemes to sell you stuff the you don't need in the first place. Just because it's the Pantone Color of the year doesn't mean that you have to paint your house that color, or wear it from head to toe. If you like a trend, and it works for you, then that's great, but exercise your free will not to jump on every bandwagon just because people claim that it's what's hot now. Take for instance the whole concept of contouring, when done well, and with some subtlety, it can really enhance facial features, but when done with a heavy hand it looks utterly ridiculous.

5) You Don't Need to Buy Everything that Your Favorite Bloggers Use, Review or Feature: You have to remember that beauty bloggers are not normal consumers. Sure, we still buy plenty of products and receive press samples, but testing lots and lots of products is very different than using your daily Holy Grail products. Part of what we do, is test things so that you can gather enough information about how a product performs to either consider getting it, or to rule it out. Furthermore, quality skincare and makeup products are expensive– so why waste your money buying things that you know you won't use.

6) Consider Adding a Beauty Oil into Your Skincare Routine: You already know that I am a huge proponent of high quality beauty oils, and I have used them for many many years. However, in the last few years they have gained considerable traction in the marketplace, and as a result the market has been flooded with so many different varieties. If you have always been afraid to try one, or if you have oily skin and think it's counterintuitive to add oil to oily skin, then it's time to have a closer look at this phenomenon that has taken the beauty world by storm. First, there are different types of oils that address the needs of every imaginable skin type– including acne prone skin. Second, high quality oils deliver hydration deeper and faster than heavier creams, and can be exceedingly nourishing. There are wonderful beauty oils that range from the most affordable and easy to come by, to the ultra luxurious varieties with steep price tags. It's worth taking a deeper look, and if you don't know where to start, have a look at my Luxury Oils tab at the top of this website.

7) Change Your Skincare Products Seasonally: Take a more pragmatic approach to your skincare routine. Evaluate the needs of your skin, and then select which products to use on any given day to tailor your routine. Just because your moisturizer works well for you the summer doesn't mean that it will in the winter. If you are prone to dehydration, then use a heavier lotion or cream, or add in a hydrating serum. The important thing is that you actually take a good look at your skin, determine any deficiencies or needs, and then add in or eliminate products accordingly.

8) Treat Your Hands, Neck and Décolleté as You Would Your Face: These three areas have a tendency to age faster, and show the ravages of time because of their inherent exposure to the elements coupled with the neglect that they receive. Why is it that they are so often an afterthought in our beauty routines?! The best thing that any of us can do early on is to nourish and protect these vulnerable areas. Pamper them with nourishing and hydrating serums and creams, and then slather them with sunscreen. Be sure to remember to reapply your sunscreen as you would to your face. Your skin will thank you, and so will your 70 year old self with skin like a 40 year old!

9) Add Hyaluronic Acid into Your Beauty Routine: If you find that your skin is prone to dehydration, then adding topical Hyaluronic Acid into your beauty routine is a great solution for thirsty skin. It is an astonishingly effective humectant that attracts and retains water molecules from  the environment and it rehydrates the surface of the skin swiftly. If you are a beauty blogger who repeatedly swatches on your arm, then be sure to add some hyaluronic acid underneath your moisturizer before you start your swatch-fest, your skin will thank you. Many products on the market contain Hyaluronic Acid, but you can also buy it separately. You only need to use a small amount, and the results are immediate.

10) Exfoliate!: Exfoliating is a wonderful way to remove dead skin cells from head to toe, and this allows your skincare products to work more effectively by allowing them to absorb more efficiently. Sometimes there is a tendency to over-exfoliate (by applying too much pressure), or to do it too often– refrain from doing either because you can actually break the skin, break capillaries or cause irritation. Take a less is more approach and select a gentle exfoliator that does a great job without traumatizing the skin.

11) Drink Plenty of Water: We all know that staying hydrated is very important, and drinking plenty of water is the best way to achieve this. Carrying a water bottle around with you is a great way to keep your body hydrated, and it also helps to flush out toxins, and this often translates to a much brighter complexion.

12) Add Some Natural Products into Your Beauty Routine: We live in a chemical-laden world, and unless you vow to live the life of a penitent monk living in a cave in the mountains, then you will likely be exposed to plenty of harmful chemicals in your lifetime. Try to rotate a few healthy lipsticks, lip glosses, skincare etc. items into your beauty routine to give yourself a break from all of the chemicals in the mainstream beauty products that we use.

13) Pamper Your Tresses: If you chemically treat your hair, use heated styling tools or otherwise abuse your hair as most of us do– then give it a break. Whenever possible, forgo your heated styling tools (even if only for a couple of days). Avoid washing your hair every single day, and periodically stop using your styling products. Once in a while use a clarifying shampoo to remove all product buildup, and then use a nourishing and hydrating mask to deep condition your hair. Using a suitable oils for hair and scalp is also a great way to nourish and hydrate those tresses.

14) Get Plenty of Sleep: We all know that getting good sleep is vital to good health, and that sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on the body. So much happens in the body while we sleep, and often times things like puffy eyes, dark circles, a sallow complexion, fine lines and dull skin are a result of sleep deprivation. Rather than buying piles of products to treat each of these concerns, consider getting more sleep and let your body heal itself. Think about addressing the cause rather than treating the symptoms.

15) Purge, Purge, Purge: No better time than the beginning of the new year to toss out old expired makeup and skincare products. Old and expired products are germ-havens that can cause a whole host of infections– so don't risk it. Many skincare products lose efficacy when used beyond their expiration date, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are contaminated and need to be tossed. Make sure to smell them, and if they seem in the least bit rancid then toss them. Old mascaras and lip glosses definitely harbor germs that you don't want to ingest or absorb into the skin, therefore when in doubt, toss it.

16) Clean Your Makeup Brushes and Beauty Sponges Regularly: Using your beauty blender sponges and makeup brushes on a daily basis means that they obviously become dirty, but they also can harbor all sorts of bacteria that can cause breakouts and infections. Get in the habit of thoroughly cleaning them frequently to avoid contaminating the makeup that they touch, and your skin.

17) Stop Picking Pimples!: It's not just that you can damage the skin and cause scarring, but also because you transfer the germs from your fingers and nails right into your skin which can really exacerbate the situation. Use a spot treatment product to rid yourself of the breakout rather than turning a mole hill into a mountain.

18) Sanitize Your Cell Phone: Think about how often you use your cell phone, and how many times it is placed on surfaces in public places. If you actually knew how dirty cell phones are, they are bacteria magnets that are probably dirtier than a toilet seat at a gas station, then you might think twice about putting yours against your face. If you notice that you are having breakouts on your cheek, there is a good chance that your cell phone is the culprit. Clean your cell phone regularly!

19) Wear Sunglasses!: If you think for a second that repeatedly squinting in the bright light isn't a breeding-ground for crow's feet, then think again! Bigger glasses that cover more surface area will definitely help to stave-off unwanted premature fine lines and wrinkles.

20) Consider Adding Retinol into Your Beauty Routine: Retinol, which is a Vitamin A derivative, is a highly effective ingredient that lightens hyperpigmentation, softens fine lines, increases skin turn-over, fights dull skin, and boosts collagen production. Just be sure to start out with a very mild (low percentage) retinol and patch test it first. Since retinol causes photosensitivity, it is a product best used at night. For this reason you need to make sure to be diligent about using your sunscreen to keep your skin protected (and to avoid hyper and/or hypo-pigmentation).

Summer Skincare Tips To Keep Your Skin Hydrated, Fresh, Glowing & Protected

Source
Despite the fact that we are already talking about (and buying) fall collections it still is summer! This is the time of year when we tend to spend more time outside, and as a result we often inadvertently overwork and under-protect our skin. Here are a few things that I have been trying to do to take better care of my skin this time of year:

1) Drink plenty of water. I know that this is obvious, but it is something that I often don't do nearly enough of-- particularly during the warm months. So this is a big reminder to me, but my guess is that there are many of you that probably are like me and forget to drink enough of it.

2) Be diligent in your use of a high SPF sunscreen (at least an SPF 30- though I use an SPF 40 most of the time). The key is to remember to reapply sunscreen frequently. I often find myself applying my sunscreen in the morning and then forgetting to do so again throughout the day. That first and only application offers us a false sense of sun protection, but it does not last from morning until night. I have forced myself to carry sunscreen with me to reapply it, but of course this means that I need to reapply some foundation, tinted moisturizer, blush, or whatever I am wearing on my face that day. While this isn't terribly convenient it is necessary, and definitely worth the trouble. It should be applied to all exposed areas, and remember that the harmful rays also penetrate your clothing. Vulnerable areas like the ears, back of the neck, the drivers side of your face and body, the back of the hands, and feet are most often neglected.

3) Wear a wide brim hat. I try to do this when I am sitting outside reading- even though I do so under an umbrella.

4) Exfoliate Skin once a week to remove dead skin and to ensure that your skincare is penetrating deeply enough. Of course this should be avoided if you have sunburned skin, but if your skin isn't traumatized by the elements and can handle a gentle exfoliation then this will go a long way to allowing your products to penetrate more deeply. If you see any weird looking moles that have been changing shape and size- then avoid this step and go to your doctor to have it looked at. I can't underscore the importance of this enough- it is very easy for them to identify precancerous and cancerous lesions that you want to deal with immediately. I have had numerous suspicious looking things removed that could eventually become skin cancer.

5) Consider adding in an anti-aging face serum to help fight free radicals. Even if you are young and aren't seeing fine lines pop up yet, the benefits of anti-aging serums do wonders for scavenging free radicals.

6) Add a nourishing face oil into your rotation. They penetrate the skin more deeply and moisturize the skin. They also give the skin a beautiful healthy glow. They can also be used in lieu of heavier skin creams when you want something lighter and faster absorbing. Fear not, they are made for all types of skin from oily to dry and everything in between.

7) Consider adding Hyaluronic-based lotions or gels into your product rotation because it helps to raise the moisture level of the skin.

8) If you have a beloved medium to full coverage foundation that is a perfect match for you, but is too heavy for the season, then blend a small amount with your favorite facial lotion or cream, and you will have the perfect tinted moisturizer. Add a touch of primer and sunscreen, and then you have a BB Cream. When I do this I use the back of my hand to mix it- it's a fast and convenient method. I also love to add a pump of Burberry Glow Luminous Fluid Base (which by the way is back in stock at Nordstrom online!) for a gorgeous luminous glow.

9) Use a good moisture mask at least once a week, or as needed.  I discovered The Organic Pharmacy Collagen Boost Mask (review forthcoming) that is my new secret weapon for glowing summer skin. According to The Organic Pharmacy, "More an instant boost than a mask, this Aloe and Seaweed gel is packed full of potent antioxidants to instantly lift, tighten and brighten the complexion. Use at least twice a week or daily during summer months." I have been using this potent antioxidant daily and am thrilled by the results.

10) Don't forget about your lips!! Your pretty pout needs more moisture and protection during the summer. Apply a moisturizing lip balm with an SPF underneath your lip gloss or lipstick to keep them protected. Reapplication throughout the day is the key to remaining protected.

11) Don't forget your hair! Not only can the sun wreak havoc on your tresses, but the scalp is subject to sunburn as well. Use a deep conditioner on a weekly basis to keep your hair in good shape, and consider a good spray on SPF that is formulated for the hair.

12) A good pair of sunglasses won't just protect your eyes, but will also protect the vulnerable under eye area. Repeated sun exposure offers an express invitation for a whole flock of crow's feet to take up permanent residence on your face-- so un-invite them!

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of the Feet: Prepping Those Tootsies for the Summer!

Rene Magritte, The Red Model, (1937) (Source)

During the colder months, we are able to get away with a multitude of sins with respect to the condition of our feet. They tend to be stowed away in boots, socks, and generally warm shoes that conceal chipped polish, dry feet, and the unsightly neglect that our poor tootsies suffer during this time of year. As the warmer months rapidly approach, and while you look at your feet in horror wondering how you will ever be able to wear those cute sandals- fret not. Here are some tips to get your feet summer-ready!

1) Soak your feet in warm water infused with a moisturizing bath gel, or a small amount of bath oil.

2) Towel dry your clean feet so that they remain warm and damp, and use a pumice stone to easily and gently remove dead and calloused skin.

3) Immediately follow up by applying a nice rich lotion to your feet. If you do this at night, then add a bit extra lotion or cream, put on some socks and your feet will look infinitely better when you wake up the following morning.

4) The following morning be sure to moisturize your feet with a lighter lotion or cream before setting about your day.

5) That dry and flaky skin may actually be athletes foot, and when in doubt let your doctor or pharmacist make that determination. Exfoliating a fungus will just make it spread- so make sure that you know what you are dealing with and treat it accordingly.

6) Try not to go barefoot outside- use flip-flops or sandals instead. There is nothing that will callous your feet faster than walking around on concrete. If you are a gym-goer- then keep flip-flops in your locker to avoid picking up all sorts of germs and athletes foot.

7) Get a foot massage! Not only will it make your feet feel great and increase circulation, but it will also make all of you feel great because of all of the acupressure points that will be stimulated during your massage.

8) Get a pedicure! Go for a bright happy color that makes you smile when you look at your feet!
