Olbas Oil and Herbal Bath Offer Relief for Cold & Flu Season

Now that we are in the midst of cold and flu season, and since I currently have a nasty head cold, I thought that I would share two products from which I have sought relief. While these Olbas products have not cured my cold, they have offered me considerable relief from my stuffy nose and my overall sense of malaise. Olbas, a Swiss company that is over 100 years old, offers an assortment of essential oils, remedies and even cough lozenges and salves that are sure to relieve symptoms and discomfort associated with colds, allergies and even achy muscles.

Olbas Herbal Bath ($9.49 for 4 oz. and $16.99 for 8 oz. from Olbas, CVS and Swanson Health): At the beginning of my cold I opted to take hot baths rather than showers to try to soak away some of my discomfort, to try to open up my sinus passages, and to give me an overall sense of wellbeing. This lovely Herbal Bath has a wonderful foam,  and its invigorating peppermint-eucalyptus aroma awakens the senses and helps to open up sinus passages. Furthermore, it soothes achy muscles and refreshes the senses. You definitely want to make sure to avoid contact with your eyes!

Olbas Oil Aromatherapy Inhalant and Massage Oil ($9.50 for 0,32 oz. and $19.99 for .95 oz. from Penn Herb, CVS and Swanson Health): There are numerous ways to use this therapeutic oil, but two of my favorite ways are very simple for treating my cold. First, one can simply sniff it directly from the bottle (which I will do for allergies, but not for my cold because of the germs). Rather than contaminating the bottle directly you can decant a small amount into a little container that you can dispose of after use. Second, one can add about 20 drops of the oil to a bowl of hot water and place a towel over the head and inhale the vapors for about 5-10 minutes. I also have experimented with soaking a wash cloth in water infused with a few drops and simply sniff it when I start to feel congested, and it definitely offers some relief.

Aroma Foundry Essential Oils and Infinity Jars Obsessions

I realize that I haven't said much, in these virtual pages, about my love of essential oils, but suffice it to say, I have had this penchant for many years. I periodically add a few drops to body products, or apply a drop to my wrists, but my all-time favorite use is adding them to my diffuser to create the most inviting and relaxing physical environment in my home. When applying essential oils to the skin, and to body products, one ought to be mindful of the fact that many have medicinal effects, and should be handled with great care and caution. Therefore, seeking advice from a specialist, and learning about the specific properties, and effects, of each of the essential oils that you are considering is of paramount importance. They are also very concentrated and should be used very sparingly, and they can cause serious skin irritations when used improperly. 

While each essential oil has a whole host of aromatherapeutic properties and attributes, I tend to choose them based upon a more visceral reaction to the aromas themselves– particularly since I primarily use them in a diffuser, rather than on the skin, to create an aromatic experience in my house. Also because we live with animals, I use essential oils in a diffuser to deodorize the house. 

My most recent discovery for high quality essential oils is Aroma Foundry, and they do not disappoint!

I also have a great love of small pretty boxes and containers in which to store makeup and skincare, and prefer to look at beautiful things that follow the tenet of form following function. When I sought to take pictures of the Aroma Foundry essential oils, I looked at my beautiful Infinity Covered Glass Dish, and decided that it would be the perfect home for my new essential oils.

Aroma Foundry Ylang Ylang Oil, from Madagascar, (Regularly $22.98. On Sale for $11.98 for .5 fl oz from Aroma Foundry and Aroma Foundry Amazon Store): I love using Ylang Ylang on my wrists, and in my diffuser before I fall asleep because it has a tremendous calming and relaxing effect. Its unique earthy, quasi-floral aroma is one that I find utterly hypnotic.

In fact, its silky smooth aroma retains all of the finest qualities associated with high quality lavender, while having none of the pungency that some of the lower quality oils feature. I feel as though I am standing in a lavender field each time I smell this lovely oil.

It makes the house smell glorious, it elevates the mood of everyone in the house, and its refreshing aroma is very refreshing.

I love high quality body exfoliators, and I really love using them. I enjoy the refreshing process of sloughing off dead skin cells, and revealing silky smooth skin. However, I like gentle formulas without jagged exfoliating particles that can tear and damage the skin. My most recent body scrub obsession is the lovely COWSHED Gorgeous Cow Blissful Shower Scrub, and not only is it gentle, but the delectable rose scent makes using it an unmitigated delight. It looks a bit like strawberry jam, and smells equally edible, and unlike many body scrubs that contain oils, this one does not make an oily and slippery mess of your shower. The Jojoba Beads and Coconut Fibre are simultaneously very gentle on the skin and extremely effective in their ability to exfoliate the skin. Therefore, this scrub is a great choice for all skin types– including sensitive skin. Skin is left soft, silky smooth, supple and ultra-luminous.
