Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil Review

Purchased (Affiliate Links)

Among my recent Erno Laszlo purchases is yet another product with which I am very familiar! Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil is among the products that I began using at 17, and continued to use for many many years. There is no question that living through the pandemic has made me very nostalgic for my life before this time, and Erno Laszlo products were such a constant in my life growing up that I felt compelled to revisit their luxury skincare line. I was reminiscing with my mom and sister about the days that we use to drive to San Francisco from the East Bay to replenish our Laszlo products, spend time together and create so many noteworthy memories, and I told them both that part of my trip down memory lane was the rediscovery of Erno Laszlo.

Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil is a wonderfully nourishing cleansing oil, with a comforting light and warm aroma, that is supposed to be massaged into dry skin. It removes makeup and dirt and helps to dislodge debris from clogged pores. After a few minutes of massaging the oil into the skin you dip your chosen Erno Laszlo cleansing bar (my choice is their Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar reviewed HERE) into a basin of warm water, then rub the bar on your oily face. Water activates the creamy lather and it deeply cleans the skin without any stripping (the oil acts as a buffer). Laszlo purists, like me, use the old splashing method which involves 20 splashes in the filled basin and then 10 splashes with fresh running water (the water should not be too hot). The end result is extraordinarily clean, soft skin that isn't in the least bit stripped. This is an amazing cleansing oil, and I had forgotten how much I had loved it, and the extent to which it is extraordinarily effective.

According to Eno Laszlo,

One of Dr. Laszlo’s earliest innovations, the Phelityl Complex remains an advanced way to hydrate skin and balance pH by replenishing the fatty acids essential to its health. This nourishing oil cleanses and conditions without stripping or drying skin.

Essential oils found in this pre cleansing oil penetrate pores, dissolving impurities on contact while nourishing skin.

To complete the best double cleanse duo, use one of Erno Laszlo's cleansing oils. Use before the Cleansing Bar of your choice as part of your Double-Cleanse ritual. Specially formulated for dull, congested skin in need of a deep-clean detox. Formulated for all skin types.

What It's Formulated Without: Phthalates, Parabens, Sulfates, Petrolatum, and Urea

Ingredients: Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil/Huile Minerale), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Corylus Americana (Hazel) Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Taraktogenos Kurzii (Taraktogenos Kurzii Seed Oil), BHT, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Bisabolol, CI 40800 (Beta-Carotene), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Citral, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool.

Overall Assessment: I really had forgotten how amazing Erno Laszlo Phelityl Pre-Cleansing Oil is, and I don't imagine that I will be without it from now on! A+

  1. Wow, Erno Laszlo wss way ahead of the curve with the double cleansing method! Can you use this oil to remove eye makeup as well, or do you use a separate cleanser for that purpose?

    1. No kidding, Erno Laszlo was doing cleaning oils nearly a century ago! You can use this to remove your makeup, however I still prefer to use an eye makeup remover before so that I don't end up smearing makeup all over my face during my double cleansing routine.

    2. I use it to remove all makeup. Don’t get it in the eye because it’s oil, but it takes off everything easily. I use waterproof diorshow mascara, and I lightly brush some on my eyelashes and let it sit for a minute. Then cleanse as usual. Bye bye makeup.

    3. It definitely dissolves every single bit of makeup, but you are right about not wanting to get the oil in your eyes! I always remove my eye makeup first, but this definitely sweeps away anything that is left!

  2. I remember the splashing but I wasn't disciplined enough to do that. Also when this first came out I didn't know much about skincare so I wouldn't have understood the idea of using a cleansing oil. He was so ahead of his time and everyone has to work hard to catch up with him.

    1. The splashing really made a huge difference. I started doing it again, and I forgot how good it feels, and how effective that method actually is. It's definitely worth taking the time to do! He really was ahead of his time!

  3. Erno Laszlo brings back memories for me too. I was in my early 20's and my roommate bought the full EL line and charged it to her mom's credit card-haha! This oil and the cleansing bar both sound amazing. I love anything that really deep cleans.

  4. I used to buy this oil! It paired so well with Erno Laszlo soaps! My favorite was the pink one for sensitive skin.

    1. I just started using this oil again, but I couldn't even begin to count how many bottles I have used since I was 17! It does pair well with their soaps!

  5. Interested to see you have gone back to this oil again. I used to use it (along with sea mud soap and pretty much everything else Laszlo) until the 2012 rebrand / re-jig where a lot of my core products were discontinued or changed for the worse. For me with this Laszlo oil you had to use with soap and pretty hot water for it to rinse away otherwise it left a film on the skin. There were tales of models in the 70s burning their faces by literally using bear boiling water for the splash technique! I still splash but have moved on to Sjal and Tatcha and a bit of Eve Lom for when I want that oily massage feeling

    1. It was definitely because I was feeling nostalgic that I decided to try a few of the products that I used for so many years. I had been talking with my mom and sister and reminiscing about pre-pandemic times, and Laszlo came up, as did our shopping trips to pick up staples and try new products. They both find it amusing that I actually purchased a few things, and they are definitely curious about how I like everything. This oil is definitely as I remember it, and while mineral oil isn't my first choice in skincare ingredients (!), I really do like this. It will be interesting to see whether or not I repurchase the things that I recently purchased. Ah yes, Laszlo changing hands so many times did the company no favors, and too many of the products that I really loved were long ago discontinued. I was definitely indoctrinated into the Laszlo splashing method at such an early age that it feels as though it is part of my DNA! I recall hearing about the models scorching their skin with using such hot water! I wonder if that was urban legend or if there were really people who did such an illogical and harmful thing! Ah yes, Sjal and Tatcha are beloved brands for me as well!

    2. Apparently Erno's mother used to wash her face with extremely hot water and this is where the recommendation came from (one can presume she had very good skin!) I do know when I was using the full Laszlo ritual (bought in Harrods or Harvey Nichols, London)that I used hotter water than normal as I found this facilitated the emulsification of the soap and oil. I can perfectly understand the nostalgia for old products (the current situation i think has made everyone even more nostalgic than before for the "god old days"). I still have 2 vintage sea mud soaps in their marble boxes (old formula - just sea mud not with charcoal like today) in my "Vintage" skincare section (alongside some Estee Lauder Almond Clay Pack and Helena Rubinstein Bio_Clear lotion (both from the 1980's)- so yes, I do love a trip down skincare memory lane. I miss just following a Laszlo ritual as I didn't even consider buying from other brands - i was much simpler and I found the original Laszlo products in the big 2oz jars lasted for ever. Since the current buyout I use nothing from them (other than an occasional swipe and splash with a well used nub of sea mud soap when I'm feeling nostalgic. In truth I think its a great shame that such an iconic brand with such an amazing history was allowed to end up as it has. It may have faired a lot better if someone else had bought it. Now I am free from the Laszlo clutches I literally buy products from all sorts of different brands. One of my recent discoveries is Beauty Pie - its a subscription service which I think puts people off but the quality of some of their products is mind blowing. he vitamin C serum in orange bottle is an amped up version of Skinceuticals for a fraction of the price.....recommended.

    3. Hi Zah, I had absolutely no idea that the use of hot water came from his mother– how fascinating! I seem to recall going to the Laszlo counter at Harrods! The hot water definitely helped the soap and oil to emulsify! Yes, the nostalgia that I have experienced in this last year is definitely what prompted me to make these recent Laszlo purchases. How lucky you are to have a couple of the old Sea Mud Soap bars. I still really like the formula that they have now, but I absolutely hate that the bar is half the size. It was so much more satisfying to use, and that part of the experience is altogether gone! I definitely use lots of different brands as well, and I am happy that I do. I have not tried anything from Beauty Pie, but I will definitely look into it, given how mind-blowing you have found their products! Thank you for sharing that! Have a wonderful weekend!
