Project Make-A-Dent: The Makeup Edition January 2014 Progress Check No. 3

October 7, 2013

As you may remember, back in October I launched Project Make-A-Dent in an effort to use some of my loved (yet neglected) makeup. The picture above illustrates the extent to which I had made a dent in each of the chosen products when I launched the series. The picture below shows you how much I  used by December 28, 2013.

The most obvious monthly changes have been in my use of the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine and Glossimer. Between October and December it was clear that those two products were really getting used with great regularity, but it wasn't until January that they both began to look on the verge of empty. I am really excited that I have managed to make such a significant dent in both of them! The Chanel Lip Pencil, the MAC Eye Kohl and the Covergirl Liquiline Eye Pencil continued to get used, but there doesn't seem to be a significant change in their size since December.  I am also pleased that the Chanel Joues Contraste is continues to look well-worn, but I am still nowhere near hitting the pan. Once again, my use of the two MAC eye shadows, Carbon and Patina, is far less impressive than expected. The Rouge Bunny Rouge Tinted Moisturizer, which I had bit neglected over the last few months, finally is getting more use! I reach for it often and suspect that it has made a pronounced difference in the amount left in the tube. All in all, I would say that I did a pretty good job in January, but I think my use of the Rouge Coco Shine and Glossimer was the real highlight!

    1. Thanks, Rocaille! Once I started to really see the dent in those two products it really motivated me to keep using them! :)

  2. awesome job! i think you made great progress this month! i was sick for ⅔ of january so not much progress in denting anything for me. i did, however, make a more conscientious effort to experiment more with layering colors of my kat von d spellbinding palette and playing with different color combinations for my urban decay vice 2 palette. the naked2 palette continues to act as my go-to for highlighting under the brow, inner corner brightening and lining for lower eye. i've used ⅔ of my blush stash at least once. i've also started using my stila stay all day liquid eyeliner in blue & brown more often instead of defaulting to my black ones. i've also rediscovered my love for buxom's stay there cream shadow in poodle (a gorgeous pale gold) and that a q-tip gives me better control over my MUFE aqua creams placement than any of my brushes or my fingers so hopefully in the following months they'll get more usage. they're mostly light, frosty colors tho so maybe that goal will be more realistic once summer time rolls around...

    1. Thanks, Chia-Yi! I really made a concerted effort with the two Chanel lippies, and it really seemed to pay off! I'm so sorry to hear that you were stick for 2/3 of January-- I'm sure that the last thing you wanted to do was contaminate your products with your bug! I hope that you are feeling much much much better!

Your method of rotating and using more of the colors in your palettes, and rotting colors other than black eyeliners is such an excellent way to use more of your stash. I think that it also serves to remind you of the colors that you have so that you are less likely to purchase unneeded similar shades. Bravo! I need to do this as well! I think that you have set great and attainable goals! Have a lovely weekend!

  3. I love your make a dent posts. They've inspired me to stop making constant wishlists and instead use and enjoy what I have. I'm still prone to the occasional purchase, but since reading about your project, I've been using up samples, and rediscovering some great products that got set aside when I was buying a lot of new stuff. Honestly, I really don't wear that much makeup anymore, especially not eyeshadow, so I've realized how silly it is for me to have a bunch of eye products on my to-buy list! Isn't it funny how I never really stopped to think about whether I would actually use something? I just got swept away with the idea that other people said it was a great product, which doesn't really help me if it's a great product that I never use.

    1. Hi Hannah! I'm so glad that project make a dent is motivating you to use some of the makeup that you already have! It is so easy to get swept up in new launches and to forget about the many wonderful products that we already own. I have found that this project has made me think about purchases with greater scrutiny before I take the plunge. Sometimes I just walk away from collections altogether when I realize that I have similar products that are gathering dust in a drawer! I am not depriving myself if I really really want something, but it certainly has curbed excessive spending! Keep me posted on your progress! Have a lovely week!

  4. Yay, what a great progress, Lola!!
Me too, I've the same problem but do you know what's the worst product to use and finish? Everyone with a printed design!!! I bought once a blush with flowers designed by Cynthia Rowley... I couldn't touch it. The idea of ruining the pattern was so strong :,(

    1. Ciao, Valentina! Thank you! Oh yes, I know what you mean--products with pretty patterns are so hard to use! I hope that you are doing well! <3
