NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Palais Royal Review & Swatches

Purchased by me (Affiliate links)

The moment that I saw the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Palais Royal, described as a Sangria shade, I knew that I wanted it. However, in the past I had noted a rather pronounced drying effect when using many of the NARS Lip Pencils and lipsticks, and was therefore a bit reluctant to try it. However, I was thrilled to find that the Satin Lip Pencils were moisturizing rather than drying on my lips.
NARS Satin Lip Pencils are described as, "a selection of high-impact, fashion-forward shades in a rich, creamy satin finish that stays on all day."

Satin Lip Pencil dresses up lips in statement shades that seduce with rich, color-bright pigments while drenching them in decadent moisture. A modern, long-wearing, vitamin-enriched formula in a jumbo pencil format to provide great wear and intense color with a satin finish. Use for lining, all-over lip color, or pairing with another lip product.

Features:
High-impact intense color
Convenient, easy and precise application

Suggested Usage:
-Apply pencil directly to the lips.
-Define, then fill in the entire lip area or use as a liner only and fill with any NARS lip product.
-Layer over Velvet Matte Lip Pencil for a more intense, edgy lip look.
Palais Royal is a dark blue-based berry red with just enough vamp in it to make red-lip and vampy-lip lovers happy. I find it beautifully pigmented, but it can be sheered out or built-up. While it can attain a great deal of opacity it has a glossy translucency when worn as a wash of color. I find that I get about three to four hours of wear before it wears away to a nice stain. The formula is quite soft and silky and can have a tendency to settle into lip lines, but I have found that wearing it over a lipliner prevents this from happening. In fact, I love to vamp it up my layering it over my beloved Surratt Automatique Lip Crayon in Mahogany because it is an extraordinarily stunning combination, it lasts most of the day, and their is no settling into lip lines. My only real complaint is that I don't like sharpening lip pencils of this sort (I find it wasteful), and would prefer a retractable bullet instead.

  2. Thanks for reminding me that there are several shades in here that I planned to collect for the cooler seasons, but my wallet most probably hates you now LOL I've been eyeing several shades along this line, including Dior Black Tie and Burberry Oxblood. Maybe I'll start with a less challenging one like Burberry Oxblood Lip Mist though. I haven't really gone to the vampy side of things yet!

    1. Hi Sunny, It's definitely a great color, and I think that this one would look gorgeous on you. I actually don't find it challenging as long as I use a lip liner. Burberry Oxblood is definitely on my list as well. I don't think that either would be too vampy for you-- they would be gorgeous on you!

    1. Hi Clare, In the past I had considerable difficulty with so many of their lip products drying out my lips, but I'm thrilled to say that this does not-- I have my eye on a few of the lighter shades now! :D xoxo

  5. Palais Royal looks beautiful!!!! I just tried a velvet matte pencil and wasn't impressed at all, but the satin sounds like it'd be a much more comfortable and hydrating pencil to wear out of the NARS lineup!! Love it with the mahogany pencil too!

    1. I like Palais Royal a lot-- the color is just so gorgeous, and I really love it with the Surratt Mahogany. This is actually the first NARS lippie other than their glosses that I have been able to ear in a long time. Most of their lipsticks and lip pencils have earned the distinction of really drying out my slips, but this one does not. At the very least swatch it next time you are near a NARS counter. It is a really lovely shade! :D
