Tom Ford Beauty Lip Color Matte Swatches and Dupes!

Gift Courtesy of Tom Ford Beauty (Affiliate Links)

Yesterday I spend some time playing at the Tom Ford counter at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills with my friend, and counter manager, Michelle Weinstein. As we were discussing all of the beautiful new Lip Color Mattes we started to ponder the similarities between some of the shades from the new matte line with the core Lip Color line, and as it turns out four out of the eight new matte shades have close counterparts in the core line. The closeness in hue, however, is where the similarities end since the mattes have a decidedly more velvet matte finish.
If you have an aversion to matte lipsticks there is an alternative for you, but let it be said, and this point cannot be sufficiently underscored, that Tom Ford Lip Color Matte lipsticks are an altogether new species of matte lipsticks. These are not the moisture depleting mattes of yesterday that will leave your lips war-torn. You will still want to prep your lips, and if your lips are naturally prone to being dry-- then you will likely want a nice moisturizing base.
You will note from these swatches that Tom Ford's permutation of a matte lipstick definitely has some sheen, but make no mistake about it these refined sparkling gems are very long-wearing and richly pigmented. An in-depth review of my collection of mattes is forthcoming.
It was such a stunningly beautiful day in Beverly Hills, and the light was so perfect, that I took lots of pictures in an effort to give you a very realistic view of both the colors and finishes of these shockingly gorgeous lipsticks.
The richness of these colors translates to serious opacity in a single swipe.
First Time (Limited Edition) is close in hue to Blush Nude or perhaps closer yet if Blush Nude and Spanish Pink had a baby. Of the four shades First Time differs the most from the suggested dupes from the core Lip Color Line.

Pussycat has a touch more purple than Casablanca, but they are quite comparable in hue.

Flame is a touch more orange than Wild Ginger, but they are very closely related shades.

Plum Lush is a touch less purple than Violet Fatale, but they are closely enough related that your selection should be based less upon hue, and more upon the desired finish.

Black Dahlia (Limited Edition) and Bruised Plum are very close, but there is a certain intensity in the blackened base that one finds in Black Dahlia that does not exist in Bruised Plum.

For vampy lip enthusiasts who have a nearly irrational penchant for Tom Ford lipsticks, then you will appreciate seeing Tom Ford Black Orchid (a mythical beauty) juxtaposed to Black Dahlia and Bruised Plum. These are three of the most sublime vampy shades ever created.
As you can see Black Dahlia is essentially a more matte version of Black Orchid, and Bruised Plum is a slightly less intense version of both. If you continue to mourn having missed out on Black Orchid, then I think that you will likely be more satisfied with Black Dahlia than with Bruised Plum. Additionally, if vampy is where your lipstick passions reside, then get Black Dahlia before it is gone since it is one of the two Limited Edition Lip Color Mattes (First Time is the other).
You will note that the mattes do possess a lovely sheen, though decidedly less shimmering than the Lip Color formula.
Modulating the exposure to the sum reveals the base colors more readily, as can be seen in the swatches below.
You really can't go wrong with either formula, and it will likely come down to a preference in the finish. That said, if chronically dry lips plague you, you will likely find solace in the core Lip Color line.
UPDATE: wefadetogray wanted to know if Ruby Rush is a blue-based red, and it is. but it is visually modified when swatched next to Flame (a decidedly bright orange). Ruby Rush is a cool red with pink undertones as you can see from the swatch below.
J asked which shades I have from the Lip Color Matte collection- so here is a sneak-peek!
Left to Right: Ruby Rush, Velvet Cherry, Black Dahlia and First Time (Gift Courtesy of Tom Ford Beauty).

I hope that this makes your choices easier! Are you tempted by any of the shades? Do you have a preference in finish? Have you purchased any of these beauties yet? Which ones are calling your name?

  1. Great swatches and really helpful to compare them to other shades from the brand. I'm thinking I will order first time and pussycat when they come out here xx

    1. Hi Clare, Thank you! I'm so glad that you find them useful! I thought that it would be a good idea to compare them to to shades within the line-- especially since there are people who prefer a more satin finish than one gets with a matte finish. However, I noted these are no ordinary mattes from before. I definitely think that you will love First Time and Pussycat. They are both stunning! I also think that you might like wearing First Time with a touch of the gorgeous Pink Guilt that you just bought! <3

  2. I love your comparison swatches! Casablanca and Pussycat are quite close! I am a great matte lippy lover and Tom Ford perfected the formula, heavily-pigmented but not drying at all. I am in love with Black Dahlia (separate review coming soon), it reminds me so much of the 90s...raisin/ dark plum vampy matte lipstick... I'm repurchasing it!

    1. Hi Kath! I'm so thrilled that you love my comparison swatches! I agree that Casablanca and Pussycat are quite close. I know how much you love mattes, and they look extraordinary on you! I completely agree that Tom Ford perfected the formula, and the pigmentation is INSANE! This is definitely a huge game changer for the mattes of yesteryear that sucked the life right out of your lips and cause them to shrivel up and peel! I know what you mean-- the color is in the same family as something like MAC Cyber-- super vampy and dark, rich and ultra pigmented. Black Dahlia is a smolderingly sexy vampy shade, and I wish that it was made part of the permanent collection! It will definitely achieve iconic status in the same way that Black Orchid did, and I am sure there will be people paying crazy amounts of money for it on eBay as soon as it sells out!

    1. Well, I'd say if you are on the fence go with Black Dahlia since you can always get Bruised Plum. On the other hand, as we discussed earlier you are going to be getting these mattes until next year and if you want to wear it now then Bruised Plum is far more readily available! I'd LOVE to see you in Black Dahlia though!

Is Ruby Rush blue based? I, sadly, cannot wear orangy reds they turn my face into a gold brick orangy dirty mess.

    1. EXACTLY! Thank you, my love! I'm so glad that you love this post! Yes, Ruby Red is a stunning blue-based red. The reason that it is hard to tell is because it is next to flame-- which is a decidedly bold flaming orange, and it modifies the overall effect of Ruby Rush. When the some comes out I will take a picture of Ruby Rush alone and post it so that you can see the shade more objectively. I can't wear yellow based reds to save my life-- they turn my cool-toned skin sallow, and make me look as though I am part of the zombie apocalypse! xoxox

I am applying to the job market. Tomorrow I have 9 deadlines so I have been working 12 hours straight! Still happy if that makes any sense.

I like the look of matte, but I have such dry lips that I usually wear City Lips Lip Plumper, my favorite hydrator, either under or over everything. One of these days, I've gotta splurge on a Tom Ford lippie. The trouble is which one? They are all so gorgeous

    1. Hi Allison :-)

Thank you so much! I'm so thrilled that you find this post useful! While the Tom Ford mattes are a whole new breed of matte lipsticks they may still not be moisturizing enough for your dry lips. You would definitely want to prep your lips, but you might find the regular formula much more to your liking. Since the price point is so high-- it's definitely worth it to swatch it (or try a new and clean tube on your lips). I definitely think that Tom Ford Lipsticks are a must-try at some point. Which one is definitely the question!! When I first tipped my toe into the pool of Tom Ford Beauty (that is to say before I dove into the deep end :) I spent a lot of time at the counter swatching the shades, and I settled on Nude Vanilla, and before I knew it one turned into two, then three, then 5, and after that I lost all self control! Beware of falling down this expensive rabbit hole LOL! :-)

    5. Pussycat is definitely more cool and purple than Casablanca. They are both gorgeous, but if you want a cooler shade then I would say Pussycat is the way to go. In terms of richness and color saturation I would say that they are comparable. Of course the other issue to consider is the finish. I think that if cooler is what you want, then you may prefer Pussycat since it is less neutral than Casablanca. :-)

  22. gorgeous colors, helen -- thanks for the early morning eye candy!

i have finally gotten my hands on the charlotte tillbury products i have been eyeing for so long. they are not available in any of the northern california stores, but a very nice lady at 'the grove' nordstroms helped me place a phone order. she also happened to wear the same precise shade of bobbi brown stick foundation, so loaded me up on samples of foundation and skincare. reviews are mixed -- i would love to hear your experience. i know tillbury designed tom ford's first offerings and i am about ready to sample something non-fragrant from him.

i have been out of touch for too long. raising 2 teen daughters has gotten the best of me for a few weeks, but i am vowing to make time for mommy starting now! hope you and all the kitties are well.

I'm so glad that someone at Nordstrom at The Grove (I live a couple minutes away from there) helped you with the CT products that you have been wanting (and gave you BB samples). I can't wait to hear what you think about what you purchased. I haven't tried anything from the line yet, and actually haven't yet sought out a counter to play with the products in person, but now that I know that there is a counter so close to me I will have to make a point to go see the collection in person. I am the most curious about those pretty blushes with concentric circles of varied shades.

I hope that you have a lovely weekend, and that your daughters have lots of fun for Halloween! xoxox, Helen

  24. Ok..had some probs getting to this post but determination won through & was so worth it.....what a completely delicious review of the TF mattes-had to go through it twice, very slowly so as to savour completely. As you know, am at present keen on picking up my first vamp & certainly from your swatches & description, black dahlia comes out on top (in the absence of Blk Orc of course)...the blackened base is the clincher over bruised plum I think for true vamp status. I actually feel like just ordering it without trying it on..it looks so great (plus what a seductive & powerful name!). Based on your swatches, one thing I want to check with you tho..is it just me or do black dahlia & bruised plum seem on the sheerer side compared with the other mattes & shades from the main collection? The Chanel Rouge Noir I tried on & was raving about was not sheer at all & opaque in one pass...which I know is extremely true of TF lipsticks normally.

    1. Sorry for the difficulty in finding it! If you go to the top of the blog and click on "Brands & Categories" you can peruse both the Tom Ford and Tom Ford Beauty links and it will let you see all of them. Did you see the Tom Ford Lip Color Matte Gift Box review that I did (also pictured at the bottom of this post? I'm pretty sure that we discussed it, but it includes more swatches.

Your analysis of the three vampy shades is spot on. Black Dahlia definitely has the blackened base, and is the clear choice in the absence of Black Orchid. Bruised Plum has much more red, and lacks the blackened vampy base. Since you already know that you like his matte formula, and it gets on well with your lips, then that is probably the shade that will satisfy your vampy desires the best!

I wouldn't consider wither Bruised Plum or Black Dahlia as being on the sheerer side, but Bruised Plum lacks the same type of opacity that you find in his matte formula. I definitely don't find Black Dahlia to be sheerer compared to his other mattes. I think that what my pictures convey, given that most of them were taken in full sun outdoors, is the slight sheen that they possess. If you go see them in person swatch them on your arm and run outside to take a look. If you order Black Dahlia without trying it on, I suspect that you will be happy. That said, if you are in the mood for a trip to the store– it might help you decide which of the shades most resonates with you. :-)

  25. It's weird as went through the brands route yet only a couple of posts on TF came up yet clearly you've done quite a few. Never mind-got there in the end :)

It's weird isn't it that bruised plum has more red in it as in the tube & pics of the bullet on line, it looks really dark purple I think...it certainly seems to be a popular shade with reviewers. As I'm going for my first & most likely to be only vamp I'd like the more blackened blood (sounds awful but I'm sure u know what I mean) colour so it's likely to be BD that I go for & am seriously tempted to just order it online...only thing holding me back is if Chanel Rouge Noir is better or similar...wldn't want 2 dark shades the same...altho have a zillion very similar pinky/nude shades so go figure...completely illogical!

Am feeling so lazy these days that what would normally be a completely enjoyable trip to Tom Ford or Harrods seems like a chore hence the online route is beckoning :)

Ps was looking at TF on ebay (don't ask me why but always feel compelled to do so) & noticed a seller has used pic of your matte swatches!

    1. That is very strange. It should allow you to scroll through all of the posts tagged with his name or Tom Ford Beauty because there are many many posts!

Yes, I agree with your assessment of Bruised Plum. It definitely appears more intense in the tube than on the skin and lips. Though of course it can be built up, but as you mentioned before, the lack of a truly blackened base makes it a less intense (and less vampy) shade.
The blackened blood description is apt! You are clearly very impressed by the Chanel Rouge Noir (no I haven't seen it yet, but now I must), and I think that you might not stop thinking about it– you may need to get it! Furthermore, it does have the matching liner and polish that you might really enjoy having.

I completely understand not wanting to deal with the chore of going in person, and traffic in London can be quite a headache. It seems that you need to be reasonably certain of your purchases before making them since the UK has such a stringent return policy. It's not great to have buyers remorse if you are stuck with something that didn't turn out to be what you had expected.

Thank you for alerting me to the fact that my swatches have been stolen. Sadly it's not the first time that I have had to deal with this. Could you send me the link so that I can send them a legal Cease and Desist letter? It always makes me so mad when this happens!

      Delete
    2. Have emailed link...they are fab swatches but no excuse 4 stealing...must be very annoying!

London traffic is certainly crazy but it's more a mood thing...somehow once winter sets in I just go into hibernation & want to stay in....or maybe it's middle age! :) Very stringent returns policy on cosmetics-understandable I suppose & have been lumbered with a few items because of this (most recently Charlotte Tilbury matte Rev lipstick in Sienna which wasn't quite what I was expecting). I was surprised to learn that some dept stores in the States allow returns when item has been tested?! That's great for consumers but can imagine all the waste!

I am sooooooo impressed by Chanel Rouge Noir! I have always been too scared of dark lipsticks assuming they are going to look terrible (esp as all the Reds I've tried have!) so for the first vamp I've actually tried on to look & feel so cool was liberating to say the least! Plus I gather the lipstick & matching polish was worn by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (some popular culture trivia for you!). Furthermore, the shade was originally called 'Vamp' (may still be called this in the USA) for many years before being called 'Rouge Noir'...how apt! I feel like you know me well 'lipstick soul sister' to know that I am thinking about it so much that will just have to purchase it. I certainly do like the idea of polish & liner in exact same colour & the polish was on my 'to get' list anyway. Please try it on....would love to know what u think of it :)

I do find that with TF lipsticks that the bullet colour does not always match up to the shade when swatched or applied on lips. Apart from bruised plum, for example my friend bought 'Alasdair' from the lips & boys & it looks like a really dark purple but applies burgundy!

I know, I did find it strange that only a few posts came up as was expecting lots of TF ones....will try again!

    3. Thank you so much! I already contacted the seller with a cease and desist order. It always makes me mad to see my hard work stolen, and it takes lots of time to take action against these unscrupulous thieves!

I totally know what you mean about it being a mood thing. When I contemplate shopping in a congested area I definitely have to be in the mood for it. The winter definite encourages hibernation rather than out in the cold weather to track down lipsticks and such!

Yes, the cosmetic return policies in the US are far more lenient than in the UK. Some places like Sephora and Nordstrom are particularly flexible about it. I try to get samples of skincare products to know whether what I'm contemplating will be a good fit for me. It is definitely nice for consumers to have the ability to return something if it didn't work, and particularly so if they had a reaction to something that they purchased, but I can just imagine the number of things that they have to throw out as a result! It's too bad that you didn't have good luck with the Charlotte Tilbury Matte Rev Lipstick in Sienna. So far I haven't purchased anything from her line. For some reason nothing stood out as something that I had to have. I certainly appreciate her extraordinary skills as a MUA, and certainly this alert was not lost on Tom Ford who has used her skills for a long time!

I didn't put two and two together that Chanel Rouge Noir was the iconic Vamp! I need to check to see if they still sell it in the US. I checked on their website and Nordstrom and didm;t see it, but will definitely keep looking! Such a gorgeous gorgeous shade. I say get it with the liner and the polish! I think that you will be very happy with them! Love Pulp Fiction, and didn't realize this was what Uma/Mia Wallace was wearing!

That's an interesting observation about the disparity between the bullet and the swatch in some of the TF lipsticks. I think that you can certainly intensify them with multiple passes, but you are right that sometimes there is quite a difference between the two.

I will definitely go back through to make sure that all of my TF posts are tagged both with his name and TF Beauty to see what is going on there! :-)

Thank you again for alerting about my stolen image on eBay! <3

    4. Yes must be very annoying/ frustrating to have your efforts & ideas swiped-glad I could help.

Am much more inclined to be out & about in the summer, with the family, as love driving but somehow in winter I just want to be inside & snuggled.....if even the thought of spending time at Tom Ford store doesn't lure me out, nothing will :). The US returns policy would suit me down to the ground as do most of my shopping online (esp since having kids) but actually when it comes to cosmetics I suppose it's best all round to buy in person as can test/compare products properly plus I always miss out on gifts with purchase when buying online. For instance, my friend has purchased all her TF lipsticks from TF Store & has amassed quite the collection of gwp's which mainly consists of mini lipsticks...I mean they are tiny but still, it's great to get a tiny 'Cherry Lush' as is a shade she wouldn't buy in full size.

Hurrah...glad you know the shade I'm talking about now ref.rouge noir as it's been around for awhile so was surprised you hadn't come across it. It must be available in the US.....I find the Chanel website is always short of the full range. In my head, I've decided to get it (Pulp Fiction / Uma sealed the deal I think) & then if I also love black dahlia (assuming I get round to testing it before it disappears!) & it's different enough from RN, then will just have to get that too.

Yes,please do check through your TF posts as really enjoy them & feel your passion!

    5. More like extremely angering! I have had to deal with far worse offenses (many plagiarized posts), but it's time consuming policing the internet to force thieves to take down the posts they steal (or having them shut down!). I sent a firm cease and desist to that seller alerting him that my attorney was monitoring his page and that eBay was being notified, and thankfully he apologized and took it down immediately! Thank you again for letting me know!

I know what you mean, the warm weather just feels much more conducive to driving around and doing things! I hear you, if TF can't lute you out, nothing else could stand a chance! You can get lots of different GWP online here, but there is also something to be said for shopping in store and forging a relationship with a SA. THat can certainly result than more samples. The little GWP lipsticks are so cute, and they are a wonderful way to try lipsticks that you might not otherwise purchase in the full size.

Yes, it took me a moment to connect that it was that iconic shade. Outside of the Rouge Coco Shine, I haven't purchased Chanel lipsticks in quite a while. I'm so happy that you are getting it! I can't wait to hear how you feel about it once you have had some time to wear it! I think that they are different enough, but if you are perfectly happy with RN you may have no need to get Black Dahlia!

I definitely will take a look to see what is going on with the way those posts are tagged once I close out the work week and have some free time. I have to prepare for my lecture tomorrow, but will have time over the weekend! :-)

  26. Oh gosh didn't mean to do straight away ref.TF posts-am already amazed at how u keep on top of blog with demanding job (amongst other things as well I'm sure).

Have ordered the Ysl kiss & blush pot (yay!) & the Chanel lipstick/nail polish (yay, yay!). Held off on the lipliner (altho like idea of exact match one!) as felt it was expensive for a liner that I would only essentially use with 1 lipstick.

Wish we would get gwp online in the UK...don't get y not!

That's good ref.ebayer...didn't sound like the obnoxious type then!

    1. Thank you for saying that! Sometimes it feels a touch difficult to stay on top of everything! My job definitely can be demanding, and especially since I never really have a true day off. You know the nature of academia!

I am so excited to hear what you think about the YSL Kiss & Blush pot! I'm also thrilled that you purchased the Chanel lipstick and polish. I agree with you that the liner is not essential, but I do like the idea of a perfect match. I definitely think that it is an area where you can save some money– especially if you are only using it fir a single lipstick. However, if you get Black Dahlia and decide that you "need" the lip liner then you can always get it then. Of course, you could probably find a suitable shade liner in a drugstore brand, or just get one of the clear liners that we have talked about.

It makes no sense why retailers in the UK would deprive you of online fists with purchase! It is the perfect marketing strategy to bolster online sales!

Yes, thanks to you my stolen picture is no longer helping that eBayer sell TF lipsticks!

I forget to make a comment in one of our last threads that I love the TF Private Blend Tobacco Vanille! I need to get a sample of it next time to see how it gets on with my body chemistry, but I received a spray card some time back, and sniffed it all of the time because I felt that it was such a compelling scent! I love that you wear it all of the time, and I giggled when you wrote that it was by far your favorite! Why of course it is, and of course (yet again) we exhibit similar interests! :-)

    2. I'm just calling you 'Sis' from now on...I am totally not surprised that you love Tob Van, not only because we are soul sisters (actually, mayb twins!) but because, come on it's heavenly! I love the smell of vanilla anyway so this is just perfect...very expensive (does TF do anything cheap?!)but so concentrated that u only need the tiniest spray & lasts for ages on the skin so bottle goes a long way. Why not just spray some on next time you are at TF counter & revel in the gorgeousness. Of course, he has so many great scents (my husband the aftershave addict has quite the collection) but I think Tob Van is the ultimate!

Got abit worried when u said couldn't find the Rouge Noir in US so thought better get it pronto incase disappears here too. Apparently, it was available in the Rouge Coco formula before but last couple of years it's been in the Rouge Allure Formula with a more matte finish (which I prefer for this sort of shade) plus the Rouge Allure tube is pretty cool-1 click & the bullet appears like magic! But oh dear now you've mentioned the 'matching' lipliner, it's on my mind again....will prob end up getting it after all as wearing this shade (so out of comfort zone) will be such an 'event' that may as well go the whole way! Oh dear also that you mentioned Black Dahlia..was trying to banish from mind thinking that 1 dark lipstick is enough but now am thinking I 'must' go & try it on soon esp as LE!

I think you do an excellent job of keeping on top of things esp like u say with academia there isn't really proper time off (although the term breaks are the best!) & certainly on a day to day basis, it's not 9-5....there's always something to be done. I really don't know how you manage to blog as well...u must enjoy it & maybe it's a therapeutic antidote to academia? Plus u r married as well...that's a few hats at least 2wear....good on you but hope u find some 'me' time amidst it all :)

    3. Clearly 'Sis' is appropriate! I'm really quite blown away by our similar academic interests!

Tob Van is a rather unpredictably sexy and rich scent. Once the tobacco recedes a touch and the vanilla balances it out it is one of the more beautiful and complex warm scents. I love the smell of vanilla as well, and this is by no means any sort of ordinary vanilla!

If it isn't designated as LE in the UK, then you probably don't have anything to worry about, but one never knows. I saw that it was available in the Rouge Coco formula before, and it is interesting that they repromoted the shade in a different formula! I agree that the tube for the Allure formula is super cool! Definitely agree that the more matte formula is perfect for such shades– it somehow ramps up the intensity, and offers it such a velvety looking texture that seems so appropriate for the more vampy shades!

Sorry that mentioning the matching lipliner seemed nice– I didn't mean to tempt you with the purchase of something that you had already moved beyond (same goes for Black Dahlia). Wear your Rouge Noir and see how you feel about it first, and then if you are utterly smitten get the liner. Likewise revisit RN if you are reasonably certain that you will wear it. If you will, then do! At least this is how I try to control my impulse to purchase, or at least to be relatively sure that I will wear what I obsess about purchasing! Our brains seem to be wired the same way-LOL!

Thank you for saying that, Sis! It definitely can be difficult to achieve any sort of balance between these things! You are exactly right, Lola's Secret Beauty Blog was born out of the need to offset the rigors of academia. Spending so many hours researching, translating, reading etc.– I found that I really needed to give my brain a break from academia! I do my best to balance all of these thing, but it doesn't always work. Juggling the various hats that one must wear seems to be a normal part of modern life! I definitely try to carve out 'me time,' but sometimes it's difficult to do as you know! :-)

      Delete
  27. Yes, I suppose that's where obsessions with cosmetics come in...its 'me time' in a lipstick bullet or face compact! The blog is a great off-setter but still must involve a lot of work & dedication..I've only recently got in2 reading blogs & especially find beauty blogs so addictive, that writing your own one must have a special sort of attachment. I do particularly enjoy yours as there is such a high level of genuine personalisation & intelligence that infuses your writing & responses (now that I know your academic standing,it comes as no surprise!). Blogs always remind me of the wonderful film (the title fails me!) with Meryl Streep & Amy Adams. I don't know if you've seen it but the latter starts a cookery blog where she recreates each of the recipes of the former, who was a well known cook. Loved the movie & the idea of blogging...had inspired me at the time to start a blog but so far not got round to it.

Our brains certainly are wired the same way...good advice ref.black dahlia & the Chanel liner. I did try the liner on with the lipstick in the store & did look great but will try with a clear liner first...its such a gorgeous shade as it is.

Totally...Tob Van is not any normal vanilla-it's sweet but sophisticated & the fragrance lingers on the skin in such a sublime way. I used to be a collector of perfumes & had sooooo many but my collection is now just 5-Chanel No.5, Coco Chanel,Estée Lauder Beautiful,Tom Ford Black Orchid (missed out on the lipstick but got the fragrance!) & the ultimate 1-Tobacco Vanille....am sure once the others finish this will end up being my only perfume!

Prepared to be blown away by our Academic interests some more sis when I respond to other post.....!!

    1. I completely agree! Blogs should definitely serve to offset these obsessions, but they also create them! Yes, that is certainly true of writing your own, and it's fulfilling to be able to choose what you want to write about– since you choose the things that interest you. Thank you so much for your kind words about me and my blog! That means a great deal to me coming from you! Julia & Julia!! I loved that movie! It was about Julia Child! I enjoyed every single second of the movie! I think that you should definitely consider starting your own blog! I would certainly read it with great happiness! It's very easy to start one too!

No question that our brains are wired the same way! This becomes more and more evident as we continually discover more similarities! Definitely see how you feel about this gorgeous new vampy shade from Chanel, and then if you need more then you will know it! I also think that a lipliner is a fairly dupable thing– so you might skip the liner and go for Black Dahlia, pif you are so inclined! The beauty of the clear liner is that you can use it with every single shade of lipstick that you own!

I am not at all surprised that Tob Van may end up being your only fragrance once you finish your others. It really is a sublime scent!

I eagerly anticipate your response to the other post. I can only imagine what you will tell me next. If this keeps up we will have to order a DNA test– because I am fairly certain that we were separated at birth! :-)

  28. Yes indeed blogs certainly act as an 'enabler' for blogger & reader! It certainly is fun though....& addictive!

'Julia & Julia' of course-it really is a brilliant film (movies, by the way are another obsession of mine aside from TF lipsticks!) & both actresses were superb;doesn't surprise me in the least that you love it too! After watching it, I really did feel like starting a blog (about what..I don't know!) but then as it often goes, you don't get round to it & then the desire subsides. However, maybe I will 'one day' (I am such a procrastinator!) & glad to know you will be a reader :)

Agreed lipliners being dupable. Will certainly get an inexpensive clear liner (eg Maybelline).

Do you have a fav fragrance that you love to wear above all else?

Def separated at birth...I always felt I should have had a sister!

    1. Exactly, and it is for that very reason that one must encourage reason to prevail. Blogger raves can soon become "must-haves" and that is all well and fine if it is something that you will actually use provided that it lives up to the hype. The problem is the tendency to feed a desire to acquire something that is essentially based upon the hype alone. It can easily become a mindless and wasteful cycle of conspicuous consumption, and that is precisely what I have tried to free myself from. Of course I am not impervious to these things, but I have developed a thicker skin so as not to find myself buying mindlessly!

I love films as well! That was definitely a very inspiring film, and I agree that Amy Adams and Meryl Streep both gave superb performances! As I said, if you decide to start a blog, you can be guaranteed of my readership!

Yes, I agree drugstore lip liners are definitely worthy contenders, and for the clear versions you really can't go wrong with a brand like Maybelline!

My favorite fragrances these says are from a small Aftelier Perfumes (a small and independent atelier perfumer in California). The two that have stolen my heart are Palimpsest and Cuir de Gardenia. They are both complex and utterly sublime scents! Her website is filled with beautiful things– including luxurious face oils (I have reviewed all of them).

      http://www.aftelier.com/category-s/1814.htm

I don't actually own any Tom Ford perfumes, but have samples of Jasmine Rouge and Neroli Portofino, and really like both. I also want a sample of Tobacco Vanille. After I wear each a bit longer, I will probably get a bottle of my favorite one.

      Unquestionably separated at birth! <3

      Delete
    2. Haven't tried Jasmine Rouge or Neroli P...am sure must be nice. I adore independent perfumers & really that's the best place to get scents from as much more unique. My husband & I went to Venice about 6yrs ago & I had a perfume blended for me at a small perfumery, with the most prominent note being vanilla (my fav scent) & it's so gorgeous..I still have a tiny bit left in the bottle. Just remembered, that I also like a couple of Creed perfumes (the White one & Black one which smells of violets) but not urging me to get them as yet! Love facial oils....use kiehls midnight recovery serum (whenever can be bothered!) which smells of lavender & feels lovely. Don't know if it's a good idea for me to check out link but I shall...when feeling prudent & sensible!

Yes, I can imagine as a beauty blogger, it must be hard to not get swamped in & exacerbate the hype around products just for the sake of it. I can't imagine you leaning that way very often though as you impart a genuine fondness (passion in the case of TF) for the respective product in your posts therefore readers will trust you & appreciate your honesty..be it positive or negative.

    3. Hello, Sis! I am so sorry for the very slow response time! I was crazy busy at work, and have been revamping my course reader for next term, and have been working long long hours!

They are both very nice, but not as unusual as Tobacco Vanille. Independent perfumers are such a wonderful way to experience fragrance! How wonderful to have nada custom blend made for you in Venice! I can imagine how you savor it! I love vanilla as well (of course). Enjoy that last bit in your bottle! I'm sure that it will come as no surprise that I wore Creed Spring Flower for years and years. I finished up my last bottle a couple of years ago, and have been meaning to go smell some of their other scents. My mom and sister also wore various Creed fragrances for years!

Ah yes, my penchant for facial is perhaps my greatest obsession! I have a deluxe sample of the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Serum, and think that it is quite lovely! If you look at my "Luxury Oils" tab at the top of my blog, you will see all of the oils that I have reviewed, but there are even more that I have yet to review!

Thank you for your kind words! I really try to be levelheaded, and have certainly gotten so much better. My achilles heel is definitely TF, but even there I have found it easier to buy only that which I will use. I definitely feel that it is important to remain transparent and completely honest about what I think, but I also realize that something that may not work for me could the ultimate panacea for another!

      Delete
    4. I think you do a brilliant job & provide really good posts...feel like reading all of them...esp (achilles heel)TF related :)

I love facial oils although haven't tried many....I think the Kiehls one is really nice & lovely to sleep with the scent of lavender on face. Will certainly check your posts whilst hoping a new obsession does not begin!

I am now not getting surprised anymore with similarities, rather am expecting them! Creed Spring Flower is lovely...the one I always spray on in dept stores is love in white (gorgeous) & more recently love in black. However, still, TV remains supreme...actually after I wrote about my vanilla perfume from Venice (called Vanille Bourbon) I dabbed it on the next day & is actually very similar to TV (vanilla obviously being the standout note).

Whilst of course I eagerly await your responses, you really mustn't apologise as no reason to-u r so efficient even amidst a clearly full on work schedule!

    5. Thank you, Sis! THat means a great deal to me coming from you! <3

Facial oils are truly one of my deepest obsessions! I will definitely have to pull out the deluxe sample that I have of the Kiehl's oil and give it a go. Beware, I have reviewed a great many oils LOL! My obsession with oils is utterly unquenchable!

I agree, it becomes less surprising all of the time, but each new discovery is such a delight! Creed Flower is so gorgeous. I will have to check out the two that you mentioned the next time I am near a counter. I agree about TV, it really is such a special scent (well, that is provided that it gets on with the body chemistry of the person wearing it). Vanille Bourbon sounds utterly sublime!

Thank you for your understanding! <3

  29. Ha ha I see...& look fwd to checking the posts..so how many current obsessions do you have-aside from facial oils & TF beauty?

Creed fragrances are gorgeous...love the bottles as well (am a sucker for presentation/packaging!).

    1. Well…currently I am obsessed with zip around wallets, and the top three brands that have gotten my attention are: Valextra, Smythson and Saint Laurent. Yes, I have lost my mind, and yes I purchased one of each! Oh, and I am stalking a couple of Saint Laurent purses, but just can't justify the cost unless I can find them on sale. What about you, lately?

I completely agree with you about the Creed Bottles and packaging. Their presentation is exquisite, but one would expect nothing less given that they have a history with the Royals!

      Delete
  30. Aaaaaah YSL divine wallets/bags..... everything! Love the losing mind & purchasing 1 of each (my husband does this & is bad influence on me!).

Ummmmm I seem 2 have exhausted my obsessions for the moment although items I'm coveting are Hermes H belt & Viviene Westwood Pirate Boots (this is odd because these came out in the eighties & rapidly achieved cult status however only recently lured me in!). TF lipsticks will always be an obsession....am sooo xcited to see new collection!

    Really...I didn't know that connection-Creed/Royalty!

    1. Sometimes one simply loses all reason– which was clearly the case when I bought all 3!

Good for you! It's nice to have a reprieve from these expensive obsessions! Oh, the Hermes H Belt is STUNNING!!!!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE VW Pirate Boots! Unquestionably TF Lipsticks will remain an obsession!

Apparently Creed made Fleur de Bulgarie for Queen Victoria in 1845, and she is said to have worn it throughout her reign! Apparently they have furnished fragrances to the Royals for quite some time!

      Delete
    2. Agreed..there are times when reason & logic r firmly out of window & one just has to think how boring & regimented life would be if we were sensible 'all' the time :) Is the Saint Laurent your fav of the 3...what colour?

Thanks for the kudos but Ha..I don't think I'm really having a reprieve at all...have recently purchased (yet more) high end lipsticks (Rouge Noir-with Polish! TF BD & VC) plus am coveting ridiculously expensive items. The H belt is indeed stunning (somehow I knew u would think so!) & my husband has it in black with silver buckle (shame we not same size waist!). I love the tan with reverse side in red or blue with gold buckle but think it's such a crazy price to pay for a belt esp as I rarely wear belts (find them an unnecessary faff, feel the same about scarves!). I am certainly not surprised u love the VW pirate boots (I have come to the conclusion we are doppelgängers!). I have my eye on the tan leather ones or the greyish suede ones (that Kate Moss seems to live in!) but am holding back (for now!) as again, very expensive, have way too many boots that hardly wear as is plus feel they should have a slightly bigger/taller heel..,.altho having just thought about them again ( whilst writing this ,somewhat forced, list of 'negatives' ) am swooning at their gorgeousness!

That's so interesting ref. Queen Victoria...love historical facts such as these (sublime & ridiculous again!) altho to know that Queen Victoria through the days of the Raj was wearing Creed whilst subjugating freedom of an entire country puts me off abit :(

      Delete
    3. No question that there are those times that logic and reason simply do not prevail! I'm not sure that it is my favorite of the three. The Valextra and Smythson wallets are very similar shades of purple, but the interior finishes of the Valextra wallet are utterly amazing! The Saint Laurent is a dark burgundy/maroon. It has gorgeous supple leather, and has all of the quality that you would expect from Saint Laurent!

LOL! So much for a reprieve! Coveting ridiculously expensive items is all too familiar! OMG, it's a shame that you two don't wear the same size belt! I know what you mean by feeling that such things are unnecessary faff, but if I wore belts and scarves Hermes would certainly cause me to covet!!!!!!

Yes, those VW pirate boots are just incredible! Dopplegängers, indeed! They are so expensive, but there is no question that they are unbelievably gorgeous and so worthy of coveting!

Yes, the sublime and ridiculous, indeed! You are quite right, and knowing the history certainly makes it impossible to ignore what you know! It's most certainly off-putting!

      Delete
    4. Off putting & ironic that such an object of beauty be associated with such ugliness but such is life I guess!

Agreed ref. VW boots=incredible! U've convinced me (not that I needed much persuading) to continue coveting....prob is I like the tan leather (love tan-it's so 70s) & the suede versions!

We may just add some more holes in his belt so it can fit me but according to the SA at Hermes,it would alter the balance of the belt & the H buckle wouldn't sit right...I did want to LOL but she was very serious so I couldn't plus wldn't want to ruin husband's H belt experience on the off chance she's talking sense!

Oooooh all the wallets sound gorgeous..love the colours. It's nice to alternate & rotate :) The key is to make sure all get used..I have so many beautiful items, some of which haven't yet seen light of day so am now making conscious effort to actually wear, carry, put on etc etc my stuff at every opportunity.

      Delete
    5. I agree completely!

They are truly chic boots, and most definitely covet-worthy! The tan is gorgeous, and definitely has that 70s vibe! It's very interesting seeing all of the 70s styles coming back around!

I know what you mean, it seems risky adding more holes to such a gorgeous belt– unless it can be done to perfection, but the buckle would have to sit right otherwise it would look odd.

Yes, I'm quite happy with the wallets, but you are quite right that you have to rotate them, otherwise there is little point in having wallets just sitting in a box collecting dust! It's great that you are making an effort to pull these lovely things out to use and enjoy them! I need to do the same! :-)

    6. My dear Sis,

Apologies for the long delay in responding....have been down with flu so even writing about sublime/ridiculous passions seemed like a chore! Anyway, hope u r well. Now let's get going:-

Yes,fashion does come round in cycles & currently it's the 70s which I love as u know however I do find it annoying in a way as now I don't feel like wearing my flared jeans for example (which normally I would wear whenever the mood takes me) because feel like a slave to trends.

It's the only way to justify 'want' purchases (especially expensive ones!) by actually making use of them as otherwise it struck me that it's such a waste not to mention a crying shame! So certainly I've decided am going to make a conscious effort to utilise wardrobe to the max.....so what if I end up wearing Gucci sandals to pop to get some milk (lol) !!

      Cross-cutting from other posts:-

      Homeland is fantastic plus am
consistently wowed by Claire Danes in this especially having seen her in completely different roles before.

Ok this is what you've been waiting for...ended up trying on the black dahlia I purchased (put it down to feeling sorry for myself whilst flu-d up!) & even though my eyes were streaming with cold & I looked like a zombie...I loved it! Whilst it is super vampy like Chanel RN, they are different (or am I trying to justify having both!)...as suspected, RN is much more brown/wine toned whereas BD more purple...can't wait to wear it out & about (maybe when I pop to get that carton of milk!).

Have u had a chance to check out the TF spring collection...I remain underwhelmed by what I've seen online altho the gunmetal coloured cream eyeshadow does look really cool plus I do love how all the colours are so atypical for Spring. Wonder what's in store for Summer?!

      Delete
    7. No need to apologize me beloved, sis! This should come as no surprise to you, but I actually knew that you had the flu! Don't ask how because I have no logical answer, but I sensed that you, and maybe the kids as well, were down with one of the pernicious bugs that have been making the rounds! I was actually getting ready to send you an email to make sure that you were okay when I found your response! I hope that you are feeling much much better!

I'm doing well, but have been so busy with work that I feel pretty tired!

Yes, I know what you mean, and the 70s Renaissance is taking on such a head of steam that it may begin to feel far too trendy to engage with in one's own wardrobe (at least not in any sort of over-the-top way). I say rock your bell-bottoms, sis– but definitely don't bother with feeling like a slave to the trends.

I completely agree with you that the only way to reasonably justify extravagant purchases is by actually using what you buy– otherwise it can be a colossal waste of money! I'm all for wearing Gucci sandals to the grocery store, the important thing is that it makes you happy. After all, these things are for your enjoyment– so it makes little difference where you enjoy them. In fact, I would argue that using such things day to day helps transform the ordinary to the extraordinary– so why not make the experience of buying milk one that is joyful!

Homeland definitely is a great show, and Clare Danes definitely does an amazing job in her role. She really brings such dimension to her character. The show certainly knows how to make the spectator experience the tension in their narrative i a visceral sort of way! Sometimes I have to hit pause to regroup!

I KNEW YOU WOULD LOVE BLACK DAHLIA!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOOOOO! I'm so glad that you are so happy with it! I suspected that the differences between BLack Dahlia and Rouge Noir would be quite different, and your description of each is spot-on! You certainly have the ultimate vampy shades now!

I haven't seen the TF spring collection in person yet, but other than the cream eyeshadow I'm not sure that I would wear the eyeshadow duos enough to justify the purchases. I love his cream shadow pots, and that new one looks lovely. I just need to decide whether I would actually use it since it is a rather dark shade. I agree though, it is a really cool color! I agree that it is definitely an atypical collection for Spring! I can't wait to see what he does for Summer since I really love what he does in those collections!

I hope that you are feeling much much better! xoxox

    8. Oh my gosh...seriously?! Actually, I shouldn't be surprised..we certainly have a psychic connection! My daughter had a 24hr cold thing & then I got a more full blown version. I am
feeling much better-thanks so much :)

I think once the shadow is on, it won't actually be that dark plus of course can be blended out...I think it would look really nice on-smokey, rock chick vibe. Having said that, whilst this is the only item I'm leaning towards in the TF collection, I won't be purchasing it. It's just too expensive for something I wouldn't wear that much as when I do feel like wearing eyeshadow, I've got my LM Caviar Sticks & there is a similar colour from there that I have. Feel abit disappointed (although very good for wallet!) so am looking fwd to summer collection even more!!

BD is very beautiful & I love how purple/black it looks on me (it pulls a very dark red on my friend). Yes indeed, I feel like I have the Vamp essentials now! Speaking of which, did you track down Chanel Rouge Noir/Vamp? Feel like you 'must' have this in your collection :)

Totally agree ref.Homeland & viewer participation...it can get abit disturbing at times & do try to avoid watching just before going to bed!

Yes def must make use of all purchases otherwise what's the point of it all?! It's also so easy to wear what's 'easy' especially for me doing the school run that should make an effort to shake it up abit. Of course, have no inclination to turn school run into daily fashion parade but so many of my wonderful
items need to see the light of day
abit more! The Gucci sandals will be worn when I pop to get milk in the car (as can't walk in them very comfortably-lol!) & yes certainly, there is a lot of pleasure to be derived from injecting some glamour into everyday routines...TF lipsticks are invaluable here!

Absolutely...bell bottoms, platforms & tan satchels shall continue to be rocked whenever mood takes me!

You have a full on job so am not surprised you are feeling wacked...apart from your blog (altho really that's hard work too!) do you do anything in particular to relax...is this where the obsession with facial oils comes in? Or perhaps snuggling down in your animal kingdom? A good movie?

      Delete
    9. I swear to you, I just knew! I hope that you and your whole family are fully recovered!

I think that you are quite right about the TF Cream Shadow, and I'm not entirely sure if I will pick anything up from the collection since I have the same response as you (shocker, right?!). That said, since I have been far too busy with work to go see and swatch in person- my feelings remain based upon a few online swatches.I do think that your Caviar Sticks will more than suffice, and if you aren't truly wowed by the collection there is simply no point in spending the money. I am looking forward to seeing the summer collection as well!

I still have not tracked down Rouge Noir, but will keep an eye out for it. I can't tell you how happy I am that you are deliriously happy with Black Dahlia!

You are so right about watching Homeland before going to bed!! Best to watch lighthearted shows after that so one has sweet dreams instead of nightmares!

I completely agree with you about using those high-ticket luxury purchases– otherwise they can be a colossal waste of money.Whether worn dropping the kids off at school or running to the store for milk, it makes a difference to feel happy when using the things that you really and truly love and appreciate!

I love the idea of you in your bell bottoms, platforms and tan satchels, and perhaps even TF BD to top it off!

Work has definitely been crazy– especially since the big research papers are due in less than two weeks! Generally speaking, the blog is definitely a nice place for me to relax. My penchant for face oils also encourages me to take a moment to pamper myself– so that definitely helps as well. The creatures that I live with are definitely a source of relaxation and joy! What about you?

  31. Hey Sis...apologies again 4 my tardy response, have been going 2sleep much earlier than normal recently (middle age is catching up with me!)hence missed out on my usual late night web exploring/your blog etc.

Well my ideal way 2relax is with a good magazine/book along with a strong cup of tea & a slice of cake-preferably a lemon sponge variety. However, with a toddler this formerly regular occurrence is now a luxury plus to be honest even when I do get a chance to sit down with a book etc, I find that I don't have the concentration capacity I used to have & the mind starts zooming around all the things that need 2b done....even if it's something as mundane as emptying the dishwasher! Movies are another fav pastime altho not really relaxing I suppose as do get over involved as a viewer most of the time. Sex & City box sets/re-runs on tv are always a sure thing for relaxing tho!

I wouldn't normally wear BD with bell bottoms etc as feel it's more 'dark nineties' than 'sunny seventies' but must confess that I do feel like pairing it with whatever I'm wearing & whenever I'm out (which is increasing abit now that Spring has made an appearance here!) as just love it (feel compelled 2send you a pic!). Having said that, I prefer the colour of Chanel Rouge Noir (I do hope u get hold of it) however the feel & lasting power of BD is superior. Def need a clear lipliner with both of them tho to ease application....these dark colours need to be put on so much more carefully than Vanilla Suede etc don't they?!

Even though have resisted TF spring collection (altho the cream eyeshadow continues 2cross my mind now & then esp as I double checked my caviar sticks & actually don't have that rock chick sort of colour) I have had a moment of madness (again!) & ordered online TF navy blue eyeliner (midnight) & Viper nail polish (what did I say once upon a time about not wanting to splurge on expensive polishes!!)..shall report back when they arrive :)

    1. No need to apologize! I'm sure that you need the rest given how busy your life is!

Your modes of relaxation are absolute perfection as far as I'm concerned! Sometimes life gets so busy that it is hard to take those moments out of the day to indulge in such lovely things!

I was wondering whether BD or RN was going to be your favorite vampy shade, and for some reason I thought that RN might win out! Please do send me a picture, I would love to see it on you!!!!!! I still haven't found it, but haven't looked in a while. I will definitely resume my search. I definitely agree that those dark shades require far greater care in applying! Shades like Nude Vanilla and Vanilla Suede can basically be applied without a mirror, but not so with these vampy beauties!

I haven't purchased a thing from the TF Spring Collection, but the cream shadow remains the only thing that I am considering. I just haven't been wowed enough to make the move since I do have other shadows similar enough. Midnight is GORGEOUS and well worth having, and I can't wait to hear what you think about it and Viper nail polish! I suspect that you will be deliriously happy with both, and if that is the case– I may "need" both! xoxox

  32. Will defo send u pics of BD,RN & Velvet Cherry too esp as these r the lipsticks I keep reaching for at the moment despite Spring being in the air now! How about u...what's your currentl fav lipstick shade/s?

Am still awaiting Midnight & Viper..seem to have been delayed! Couldn't sleep at all last nite so did something silly....ordered the TF cream eyeshadow....shall let u know if u 'need' that also! :)

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Midnight & Viper! I think that the TF Cream Shadow is very pretty, and I imagine that you will enjoy it! If you deem it a must-have, well then what kind of sister would I be no to run out and get it!!!!!!!!! :-) xoxoxox

  33. By the way, have you come across TF matte lipstick shades in Wild Orchid & Hot Ceri??? I noticed these on the Selfridges website (no image of the shades tho) & they appear to be sold out!!!! I can't see these colours anywhere else so it's abit of a mystery?! Feel irrationally annoyed!

    1. WHAT WHAT WHAT?!!!!!!! I just went to their website and saw that as well! I wonder what this means!?!?! I am going to text my TF friend today to see if she knows anything about this! HMMMMMM! Neither of these colors are listed on the Tom Ford website. I wonder if these are UK or Selfridges exclusives? It is entirely possible that they haven't actually sold out, but instead haven't yet stocked them. Who knows! I hope that we can get to the bottom of this!

  34. Yes that's what I thought that perhaps they are due to come in stock...was practically leaping with excitement at the thought of more matte shades (was expecting more to be added!) plus 'wild orchid' must surely be a wondrous colour! I contacted Selfridges online but they were not helpful & referred me to the TF counter who NEVER pick up the phone. So am none the wiser....yes, your friend could be the best source of info...let me know what u find out detective sis!

Pic of BD should be in your inbox shortly :)

Oh so Flynn must b gorgeous...was it not a repromote of a full size?

Ok so have received the TF cream shadow & I must say in the pot it looks the most gorgeous colour..haven't tried it on yet. I must say, the last TF cream shadow I purchased was Pink Haze & was abit disappointed with the colour on me so ended up selling on eBay. Didn't bother with Platinum or Spice (although after seeing reviews of these, including yours, have a tinge of regret!) but was strangely drawn to this so it had better exceed expectations....

Oh gosh the nail varnish-Viper-looks amazing, a blackened purple & the pot is divine...will report back when actually put it on (which knowing me won't be for ages!).

Disappointingly, I was sent the wrong shade eyeliner (onyx instead of midnight) which I don't know how is even possible...so still awaiting that 1!

    1. Hey Sis! Sorry again for the woefully slow response! The term is ending and I have been scrambling to tidy up loose ends and prepare to submit grades.

I texted my friend about the two new mattes that appeared on Selfridges online, and she said that she would look into it. She didn't know if they were UK only, or anything about them, but she will let me know as soon as she hears back from TF! I will see her on Friday– so hopefully she will have some information by then.

OMG, not only are you drop-dead gorgeous, but wow, does BD ever look like it was created for you alone!

Sadly Flynn isn't among the repromotes. I would liken it to a pinker version of Nude Vanilla.I really hope that it becomes part of the core line! I would order a full size in a heartbeat!

I think that the TF Cream shadow is definitely very pretty. I may cave and get it, if you find it to be as glorious on as it is in that magical little pot! I didn't get Pink Haze– because it was just a bit too pink for my liking (on my eyes at least), but I do have Platinum, and think that it is GORGEOUS and so easy to wear. It is worth looking at , if there are still some floating about. I didn't buy Spice because I neither found the shade terribly unique, nor was it one that I would reach for with the same frequency as Platinum. I hope that yours exceeds your expectations, and that you implore me to buy it as well!

Oh, how gorgeous Viper sounds! I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

You have got to be kidding me! This is the second time, in recent history, that you have been sent the wrong color product! First the lipstick, and now the eyeliner! It really shouldn't be that difficult to fulfill an online order! I hope that you swoon as soon as you see Midnight! I hope that it arrives soon! <3

  35. Let's make a pact of no more apologies 4 'late' (yours never are) responses after all what's time between sisters!

I still remember how manic last few weeks of term are so u must be very busy....plus must be looking fwd 2the hols?

I did FINALLY manage 2 speak to someone at Selfridges TF counter & bizarrely she knew nothing about these shades as they weren't sticking them in store. She concluded that they must be forthcoming. The plot thickens!

Oh so pleased u approve of BD...I'm also really impressed with the wonders of clear lipliner...its a magical thing, can't tell its on while applying, all the while wondering what's the point of this & then voila! When applying lipstick there's an invisible fence there...brilliant! So thank you 4 BD & clear lipliner my dear Sis! Shall forever associate these with u :)

Ohhhhhh Flynn sounds delicious...pinker version of nude vanilla must be perfection...regret having self-imposed ban on light pink lipsticks now!

I think the platinum is gone everywhere (these LE items become gold dust don't they!) but the Selfridges TF lady told me there's going to be a selection of cream shadow pots in the summer range plus these will be extra special as apart from the cream
base, there will be a base of complementing glitter colour..both contained in a gloss white pot. She said one of the colours is a cross between platinum & spice. Exciting!

Ok now there's more....I have been sent the wrong TF eyeliner shade again from the same dept store!! They keep sending me Onyx instead of Midnight! I've now taken it as a sign to refrain from purchasing the eyeliner online & wait 2check it out at TF counter. Had a niggle that maybe midnight isn't as dark navy as I would like it 2b so maybe dept store's slackness could save me an unnecessary £26!

By the way..developed a sudden crush on plum lush..kind of slipped under my radar but now feel like MUST try it on! Note I'm being sensible saying that I'll try on as opposed to just ordering...lesson learnt from Flamingo!

    Bye 4 now :)

    1. Agreed!!!!!! <3

Yes, the last few weeks of the term are quite manic, indeed! I have until Wednesday at midnight to submit all of my grades, and it is generally a scramble right up until the end! Then I get about a week to unwind before the new term begins!

It definitely sounds as though Selfridges may be stocking those soon– still no word on whether or not those two shades will be coming stateside. I noticed that Selfridges does have Flynn available online– so you can definitely get one, if you think that you want it. That is my favorite from my Lips & Boys purchases.

Oh yes, my beloved sis– I wholeheartedly approve of you+BD! This is a union made in heaven! I also saw that Black Orchid has popped back up on the Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman websites- I am publishing it tomorrow! I also just published swatches of the three Spring 2015 shadow duos. They are all gorgeous, and much prettier in person than I had imagined. I didn't buy any of them though.

      http://www.lolassecretbeautyblog.com/2015/03/tom-ford-beauty-spring-collection-2015.html

I agree with you about the marvels of clear lip liners– this was a thoroughly brilliant invention! I'm touched that you associate the pairing of BD and the clear liner with me!

Platinum is a popular repromote, and I would bet that it comes back again. Yes, I have all of the information about the Summer Collection and am awaiting pictures that I can publish. It is a stunning collection, and the cream pots with powder glitter shadows on top are gorgeous!

I simply cannot believe that they got your eyeliner shade wrong twice in a row! This is utterly absurd! Perhaps it is a sign that you should go see them in person to see if you really want Midnight since they seem intent on not selling it to you!

Plum Lush is definitely seriously crush-worthy! I definitely think that it is worth trying on, and now that you have entered the vampy-fold there is no going back! I still think that you can manipulate Flamingo with a vampier liner, or even try missing it with BD to see what type of lovely shade comes from their mixing. While you may not have purchased it in person, you might as well see if you can find a way to enjoy it!

Now that you have had that new cream shadow for a while, do you think that I need it?

      Talk to you soon! <3

  36. Hey,

Hope u've got my response as not sure it went through...

Anyway, quick one for now...just ordered the 2 mystery (seriously, even the TF store haven't heard of them!) new TF matte shades from Selfridges I told u about as were suddenly coming up as available...no bullet image (I mean, y not?!) so haven't a clue what colour they are but with names like 'wild orchid' & 'hot ceri' I'm excited! Will report back as soon as :)

    1. Hi Nishi! <3

I only received these two comments and the email that I responded to the other day. If you sent another comment I haven't seen it.

I can't wait to hear all about the two TF shades that you ordered from Selfridges! Would you mind swatching them on your arm for me? I could post them for everyone interested in seeing them (and of course would credit you). I hope that they are gorgeous, but I agree with you that the names to suggest stunning shades! I cannot wait to hear what you think of them!

    2. Oh that's annoying...had a feeling didn't go through as was just hanging for ages. Anyway.......

the moment we've been waiting for-received the lipsticks today & as it turns out Selfridges website have put the wrong names (what is it with UK dept stores these days!). Perhaps this is why nobody has heard of them?! Ok the actual names are Electric Pink (as u can imagine, a vibrant hot pink) & Velvet Orchid (a mid purple toned shade). I shall send u pics via email of the bullets & certainly swatches, if decide to keep (am not sure at the moment).

Both colours look gorgeous-the pink looks like a matte flamingo (makes me think I shouldn't have got flamingo as prefer the matte finishes). The Velvet Orchid (preferred the name, wild orchid) looks especially lovely & more unusual...got a feeling may end up keeping this one. Will keep u posted :)

      Delete
    3. I absolutely hate when that happens! With longer responses I often type it in Word and then copy and paste it– that way I have it to resubmit in the event that it disappears into the ether!

Seriously, how difficult is it to post the proper name on a store website?! I just saw the pictures that you sent, and I am drilling over the keyboard! Thank you for the pictures! I will post them, and then if you decide to keep them I will post the swatches! Electric pink looks a lot cooler than Flamingo from the tube, and wow is it ever gorgeous! Velvet Orchid is insanely gorgeous!

I can't wait to hear what you end up doing! I hope that those two shades make it to the US, but who knows– they might both be Selfridges exclusives!

      Delete
    4. That's a good idea ref.typing in word.

I know, right?! How hard can it be although all the name confusion has got me confused too-it's not Velvet Orchid as I've put but Velvet Violet...bit of a tongue twister (clearly the TF imagination is concentrated on lipstick names as opposed to cream shadows!!).

Yes, u r spot on as compared bullets of both side by side & Electric Pink more cooler toned than Flamingo....does seem lovely. Had another look at Velvet Violet & it looks so nice! Am so sleep deprived that in my feeling sorry 4 self haze may just end up keeping both!

Oh I hope not just Selfridges or UK exclusive....these strategies make no sense 2me especially when former country exclusives make it across oceans in the end-TF Asia exclusives Bare Peach etc case in point! Perhaps Selfridges just got them first (& in their excitement coukdn't even get the names right or put colour images up!).

Am also taken by some of the revivals (it's the sleep deprivation again!) aside from Black Orchid of course, Morrocan Rouge looks gorgeous from what I've seen online...any thoughts?

      Delete
    5. Yes, I learned that one the hard way!!!!!!! Feels a bit like losing part of your dissertation pre-back-up computer glitch!

Yes the names are confusing tongue twisters! Both look so gorgeous! LOL, yes the difference between the recent cream eyeshadow names and those of the lipsticks is pretty funny.

I suspected that Electric Pink was cooler in tone compared to Flamingo. Sleep deprivation sounds like a viable justification for two new TF lipsticks to me. Seems fair: toddler cuts new teeth, mommy gets new lipsticks!

I completely agree with you about the country specific exclusives, and it does seem as though they build up an international frenzy and then launch them across the globe once the hysteria reaches fever pitch!

Did you miss my swatch post which includes Moroccan Rouge, Pure Pink et al?

      http://www.lolassecretbeautyblog.com/2015/03/tom-ford-beauty-new-permanent-2015-lip.html

I think that Moroccan Rouge is a stupendous shade, and I have been contemplating it and Pure Pink. Smoke Red is also gorgeous! Look at the swatches and let me know what you think! I received the cream eyeshadow, and I really need to go photograph it so that I can swatch it and wear it! It is so very gorgeous!

      Delete
    6. I thought I saw that post but didn't see swatches or maybe it's a different one I read-where u inform about the revival of these shades & availability at dept stores-will have to check the link. Morrocan Rouge looks abit glittery from swatches I've seen? Anyway, agreed also ref. Smoke Red & Pure Pink altho will wait to try these on instore (famous last words!). R u not taken with Bare Peach,Naked Coral etc...I'll have to try them on too mainly to satisfy curiousity as don't look amazing in the few swatches/reviews I've seen.

Loving the rationale-new teeth for toddler/new lipsticks for mummy....does it count that I already used that card for Missoni dress/headband!! :)

Ouch yes indeed..losing parts of dissertation-we've all been there!!

      Delete
    7. Ok just checked the link & apologies, that's the post I read but somehow managed 2miss the swatches ?!! Blame it on sleep deprivation I guess!

Morrocan Rouge stands out 2me-can't wait 2try it on. So glad I have Black Dahlia & First Time-love them both!

      Delete
    8. I think that Moroccan Rouge is almost a lighter and pinker variant of Bruised Plum. It doesn't really seem to be a glitter-fest to me, but I would definitely check it in store to see what you think of it in person. I agree that you should also see Smoke Red and Pure Pink in store as well– since you don't want to feel as you do about your Flamingo purchase.

Bare Peach and Naked Coral look beautiful, but they are both too warm for me– I can pull off some neutral nudes, but when I tread too far over the warm line my complexion starts to wash out and appear sallow. Therefore I appreciate such colors from afar.

Oh, how easy it is to come up with such rationales, but truth be told the disruption and sleep deprivation that one has to endure with a teething toddler does invite some sort of reward system so that even when one feels like a zombie that one enjoys the tiny things that offer some much-needed pampering!

Oh, yes– losing parts of the dissertation (no matter how small– even just a sentence) is so traumatic! I always emailed myself the individual chapters and drafts so even my backups had backups!

      Delete
    9. Oh good, I am glad that you saw that other post! YEs, Moroccan Rouge is definitely a standout color to be considered! I'm so glad that you have Black Dahlia and First Time as well– I love them both as well!

    10. Not disco ball glitter but thought I detected some shimmer/sparkle in some swatches I've seen....probably different in person but anyway look forward 2trying these repromotes that didn't pay attention 2 first time around.

See your point ref.warm/cool shades however I find TF peachy/beige shades are quite unique in that they tend 2have some light reflecting magic in them so don't lay flat on the lips therefore avoiding the sallow/corpse like effect.

Speaking of un-corpse like & dewy, sun kissed loveliness...just had a look at the summer collection on TF website....Naked Bronze eyeshadow pot has my name on it! The lip sheers look nice 2 although a couple of them are same as last year (lazy!) eg sweet spot which I have & admittedly is Summer in a tube!

Oh dear 2funny, I used to email myself chapters etc (along with saving on several memory sticks!). My obsessive compulsiveness was at its peak during phd in particular after I 'lost' important stuff!

      Delete
    11. It definitely has some sheen, and the private blend version in the white tube from the first time did seem to have added sheen, but I can't recall if there is any sparkle in this new version. If memory serves, it seems to have a sheen as well. I will definitely check next time I'm at the counter.

Yes, the TF Peachy Beige shades do have lovely dimension, but even Spanish Pink is too warm on me. These types of shades just don't look great on me– unless there is enough coolness to offset some of the warmth (cool shimmer juxtaposed to a warmer base shade can do the trick).

Yes, I have a few pictures of the Summer Collection, and I agree that Naked Bronze is gorgeous. Yes, I also notices that a couple of the lips sheers are repromotes, and I guess that's good if you missed them the first time around (and wanted them). I would have been very happy if they had included a Lip Vinyl or two- since I love the formula. Sweet Spot definitely is the embodiment of Summer in a tube!

There is absolutely nothing worse than that feeling– the moment that realization takes hold it is the worst type of horror! Nothing like a Ph.D. to turn one into a neurotic wreck! You just can't get through that whole process unscathed. Even fewer people would get Ph.D.s than already do if they actually knew what they were getting into!

      Delete
    12. Morrocan Rouge & Smoke Red (see how I gravitate towards these vampy shades even though the sun is out..u've well & truly sent me 2the dark side Sis!) both look really nice as well as Pure Pink....would be so handy if had TF counter in local mall so could just try them on...altho would purchase even more lipsticks then without a doubt so maybe it's a good thing!

Speaking of more lipsticks, am keeping the 2 new TF matte purchases-electric pink & velvet orchid (although they are now available at other UK dept stores besides Selfridges under the 'original names' of Hot Cerise & Wild Orchid...aaaargh!!). They r both so gorgeous & summery, just had to (will send u swatches). Love love love TF matte formula so much, feel like getting all the shades!

Will have 2 try the Vinyl at some point despite not being a gloss lover....again that local TF counter is needed!

So true ref. PhD....beast of burden without a doubt!

      Delete
    13. You really have gone to the dark side, indeed! You have really embraced it! I love it! It may be more beneficial to your wallet that you have to make a concerted effort to get to a TF counter!

I had a feeling that you would keep those two new mattes! I cannot wait to see your swatches! Very strange about the two different names getting used! Haha! I suspect that you have more TF mattes in your future! Just remember Flamingo when you get too trigger happy and want to buy all of the shades!

The Vinyl formula is really lovely, but since you aren't a huge gloss lover then it's probably not imperative that you have the one color in the permanent range (a white shimmer).

      Delete
    14. You must be psychic Sis...so taken am I with the matte formula that just this morning have ordered pink tease (self ban on purchasing more pink lipsticks lifted after trying on friend's one-it's such a gorgeous matte cool toned pink), plum lush & ruby rush (bit the bullet & gone 4 the bright red...figured if any1 can make it wearable, will b TF). To not sound completely crazy, I used discount vouchers given to me by Selfridges (because of the whole TF name confusion) & House of Fraser (dept store that kept sending me wrong shade TF eyeliner) so got 3 lipsticks for £60 (still alot in real world I know!). Shall report back on what I hope shall be positive feedback...hopefully no more Flamingo experiences (shame as Flamingo is such a gorgeous shade though so am either going 2start wearing it more or sell on eBay...have a feeling will be the latter as when in mood 4 a bright pink am more likely 2go for my new matte electric pink...the shade, finish & staying power is incredible!). 1 problem 4 certain will be where 2put these new additions as now have no room in my lipstick section (am anal about organisation & overspill lipsticks can't possibly be put in eyeliners section!)

Confused about the Vinyl now ref. one colour in the permanent range-white shimmer? The Vinyl are the lip glosses yes? Or is this some other hidden gem I'm not aware of?!

      Delete
    15. LOL! I have come to know your taste quite well! No point in instituting a ban, the heart wants what the heart wants! All of your recent TF Lipstick acquisitions will look gorgeous on you! You certainly deserve those discount vouchers given all of the colossal mistakes/confusion! It simply shouldn't be that complicated to receive what you ordered! My guess is that you will love all of them! I hope that you find a way to use and love Flamingo, but eBay is a great resource if you decide to her rid of it!

I suspect that you are going to expand your lipstick section, and I do the same thing storing like products together! I, too, would not store lipsticks and eyeliners together!

Lip Vinyls are Lip glosses in a squeeze tube. There have been other colors that were part of Summer Collections– like my favorite Pink Lust Lip Lacquer from Summer 2013. I think that the idea behind Vinyl is that the white shimmer can impart shimmer to any lipstick. It is, in my opinion, a hidden gem, but I wish that there were more colors to select from, I REALLY wish Pink Lust was part of the permanent range, or that they would have repromoted it for this current summer collection!

    18. Was meaning 2ask did u get pink tease & pussycat-remember they were on your radar? I feel like may as well get Flame too as why leave 1 matte out (lol). Although bright orange lipstick not my thing & the nearest I've got is Sweet Spot which is gorgeous but a lot of its gorgeousness hinges on the fact that it isn't matte, but slick & shiny....don't think matte orange works all that well, certainly not 4 me.

      Delete
    19. They are really cool, and I actually even prefer the formula to his regular lip glosses! Believe it or not I still haven't purchased Pink Tease and Pussycat, but they are definitely on my want list! Flame and Sweet SPot are definitely too warm and too orange for me to be able to pull off, but I do think that they are both gorgeous! You might try Flame on in person– you might be surprised by how good that it looks on you! Since the TF Mattes aren't flat you may feel that you can wear it! I definitely wouldn't order it online without trying it first in person though!

      Delete
    20. Seriously Sis, u big time 'need' Pussycat & Pink Tease...they r both truly perfect. I certainly won't be purchasing Flame untried but will try on when next at TF counter. Doesn't look like I'm meant to purchase any more lipsticks unseen/untried as Ruby Rush & Plum Lush have apparantly gone missing en route to me! This is from the same department store that kept sending me the wrong TF eyeliner shade! Needless to say I won't be purchasing stuff from them again in a hurry (if at all!) although will have the vouchers refunded to me (issued in the first place because of the multiple errors with eyeliner!) so will put towards a delight from the TF summer collection which they now have on website...think it's likely 2b naked bronze cream/glitter shadow pot but mayb nude dip or the blusher or bronzer....decisions, decisions! have u tried TF bronzer?

      Delete
    21. They are both on my list because of your effusive endorsement! Agreed that you should see Flame in person.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!!!!!!! What on earth is join ton in their shipping department?! This has become so ridiculous, that I don't blame you for wanting to shop elsewhere from now on! There is really no good excuse for such repeated incompetence!

Agreed, Naked Bronze is lovely, and if you missed Spice then this is a justifiable purchase! Nude Dip is definitely worth having, and it is definitely my favorite TF quad. I haven't seen the blush in person yet, but it is definitely a potential purchase for me as well. I have tried the bronzers on in person, and the quality is quite lovely. I have yet to purchase either because I fear that both may be a touch too warm for my skin tone, but Gold Dust is the one that I have repeatedly contemplated.

    1. I'm so glad that you loved my purse post! I thought that you might like that purple SL purse! I agree that the Milly iPad case evokes a certain Missoni fabulousness! Oh yes yes yes, I love that you found a gorgeous Missoni dress and headband, and on sale no less!

    2. It was a delicious post-loved the pics & descriptions...all that purple was just gorgeous. Have always thought Missoni dresses were so pretty (& summer evoking) but crazily priced (love designer bags/shoes/cosmetics but designer clothes have to be on good sale for me to purchase...so there's my 1 sensible thing!) so was pleased to find these gorgeous things at a great price. Did order some Missoni wedges as well but strangely uncomfortable which was disappointing. May have to hunt for some that aren't as they looked so nice!

      Ciao 4 now

    3. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the post! I figured that you would given your penchant for fine leather goods!

Missoni really does make amazingly gorgeous things, and I love the retro-aspect to so many of their iconic prints! How horrible that their wedges are uncomfortable! That is a true disappointment, indeed! Perhaps they just need to be broken in? Or maybe it is just an inherently uncomfortable design? Can you return them if they are essentially unwearable?

    4. Absolutely retro prints....very 70s vacationing vibe!

Oh I returned them after trying them on just once...everything was lovely (open toe, not 2narrow,perfect heel height etc) apart from the strap that pulls up on the back of the foot...it doesn't stay up at all so when walking it literally falls down under heel of foot....useless or what! Could be, I just got a faulty pair but have a feeling that they are all like that:(

    5. Even late 60s. I absolutely love that!

Good, I'm glad that you returned them! No sense in spending money on something that you can't wear because it is so uncomfortable! Faulty pair or not that is just ridiculous!

  38. I know & these retail at over £200! Surely Missoni should sort the design out!

    1. You would certainly hope so! Though, there are those fashionistas who don't seem to care if the things they wear are uncomfortable as long as they look fabulous! I am far too pragmatic person to endure pain and discomfort in the name of fashion!

    2. Have 2confess in my younger days that was abit me...coats that weren't warm enough & uncomfortable shoes. With age has come wisdom.....most of the time :) Plus not 2mention the fact that how 'fashionable' can one look hobbling painfully slowly down the mall with blistered feet?! Sexy...NOT!
