As Labor Day approaches, and summer gives way to fall, we have a bit more time to enjoy the care-free days of season. If you are planning on spending the holiday playing in the sun and barbecuing with family and friends, make sure that you have adequately stocked up on high SPF sunscreens, wear protective SPF clothing and perhaps even have some bug spray on hand. I have selected a few of my current favorite products that are going into my beach bag for the upcoming holiday weekend.

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen Tinted Face SPF 50 ($13.99 for 3 oz. from Australian Gold,  Walgreens, Ulta, and Target): This tinted mineral sunscreen for the face boasts a subtle tint, a silky smooth texture and consistency, and offers an SPF 50 for excellent protection. It is water resistant for up to 80 minutes, but I reapply it every 45 minutes to ensure that I remain protected.

Australian Gold Botanical Sunscreen SPF 30 ($15.99 for 5 oz. from Australian Gold, Walgreens, Walmart, Ulta and Target): If you are only going to be out in the sun for short periods of time (like walking to the car from the office), then this mineral SPF 30 sunscreen is a great choice. If you are gong to be out longer, and playing in the sun, then I would recommend their SPF 50 instead. This sunscreen leaves behind no white residue, it is non-greasy and it feels great against the skin.

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. We’re most familiar with SPF when we buy sunscreen. SPF determines how long it will take for your skin to redden while wearing the product versus if your skin was unprotected.

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. UPF determines the amount of ultraviolet radiation that a fabric blocks. UPF is always used in reference to fabrics, like your clothing, and how well effective they are blocking UVA and UVB light. Like SPF, there is a rating system for UPF.

S'well Water Bottles ($25.00-$45.00 each from S'well, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, Birchbox, Athleta Gap and The Container Store): S'well Water Bottles are ingeniously made from BPA-free, double-walled stainless steel that is so well insulated that it keeps liquids cold for 24 hours, and hot for 12 hours. They are so well insulated that no matter how cold the liquid inside, there is absolutely no condensation outside. I purchased the 17 oz. and 25 oz. sizes, and I use the larger one so that I wouldn't have to refill my bottle as frequently, but prefer the 17 oz. size when I want something smaller, and I have access to quick and easy refills. However, I definitely think that the 9 oz. is a little too small for the purposes of staying hydrated throughout the day. They are also perfect to have on hand when you are out and about during the holidays, and I don't leave home without at least one of them on hand!

Best known for their exemplary anti-aging skincare products, StriVectin now has an equally impressive line of haircare products to add to their repertoire. As expected, their foray into haircare resulted in products that are exceedingly effective, a joy to use, and affordable. They offer three lines: StriVectin Hair Color Treated Hair, StriVectin HAIR Max Volume and StriVectin Hair Ultimate Restore. I selected the line for color treated hair, and despite the fact that I don't always color my hair, I do periodically. Furthermore, having curly hair means that I need a gentle haircare line that won't dry out my tresses.

StriVectin HAIR Shampoo for Color Treated Hair ($23.00 for 8.5 oz. from Nordstrom, Ulta, Sephora, and Macy's): This pleasantly scented shampoo boasts a sulfate-free and dye-free formula that is gentle enough to use daily without stripping the hair or causing color to fade. While I don't wash my hair daily, because it is naturally dry and  curly, I could if I wanted to. This shampoo works very well for my hair because it gently removes all product build-up and leaves my hair soft and shiny. 

A protective, sulfate-free shampoo for color-treated hair that gently cleanses while defending against color fade. Color Care Shampoo is formulated with NIA-114™and Chromalast Protein Complex™ to offer UV protection, lock in color, and reduce damage due to coloring treatments. The formula maintains color vibrancy and removes dulling buildup to reveal shine and softness between salon visits.

This nourishing formula leaves hair soft, moisturized and shiny. I am even able to get a comb through my hair without any tangles or knots! 

A protective conditioner for color-treated hair that deposits proteins to fortify over-processed strands while defending against color fade. Color Care conditioner is formulated with NIA-114™ and Chromalast Protein Complex™ to offer UV protection, prevent color fade, and dramatically reduce damage due to coloring treatments. The formula seals in moisture to resist future damage from coloring and environmental stressors.

After you condition your hair you snippy massage the gel-like serum into your hair from roots to tips, and leave it on your hair for about 3 minutes on and then rinse it out. It delivers added hydration, nourishment and shine to the hair and leaves hair completely frizz-free.

A nourishing treatment that enlivens colored tones while infusing hair and scalp with moisture. Color Care Instant Vibrancy Booster is formulated with patented NIA-114™ and Revitaglaze Complex™ to target signs of damage while hydrating and strengthening strands for improved condition and luster. The formula smooths and seals for reflective shine and enhanced color quality. 

Directions: After cleansing and conditioning, massage into roots and work through ends.  Leave on two to three minutes and rinse. Use one or two times per week.

Overall Assessment: This is a really impressive line to extend the life of hair color, but it is also a great choice for naturally dry, curly hair. Excellent job, StriVectin!
