I have always loved potato chips, but I definitely have a preference for organic chips to the big-brand chemical-laden versions. Aside from the fact that they tend to be a bit healthier, I also prefer the taste. I was recently introduced to Humble Organic Potato Chips, and they taste delicious, are certified organic and they even come in a compostable plastic-free bag! This wonderful Canadian company, which was started by Alicia and Jeff Lahey, is environmentally conscious and engaged, and their sustainability practices are enviable.

Humble Organic Potato Chips flavors: The Original, Smokey BBQ, Creamy Dill, Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar and Honey Mustard (5 oz. for $4.69 from Amazon): The seasonings for each of their potato chips were created by an internationally certified chef, they use the entire potato (including the skins), and therefore there is zero waste, and the chips are light and crispy because they are traditionally cooked in (rather than kettle cooked). Unlike kettle cooking, where the chips are batch-cooked in cooler oil, their chips are cooked on a conveyer belt in a traditional manner. They are cooked in a light, high oleic organic sunflower oil. The flavors of the three flavored varieties perfectly reflected their indicated flavors, but with a refinement not typically tasted in potato chips.

If you are anything like me, and you plan to spend your last weekend of summer enjoying the outdoors– then here are a few things to remember.
1) Make sure to have plenty of high SPF sunscreen on hand, and be sure to reapply it frequently. It might be worth using an SPF that is water-resistant or waterproof if you will be swimming, or sweating a lot in the hot sun.
2) Remember a wide-brim hat and sunglasses to give yourself more protection from the sun.
3) Consider UV protected clothing. SPF/UPF garments will bolster your SPF protection– and they are particularly useful if you will be outdoors for long periods of time.
4) If you are going to be celebrating Labor Day in an area with mosquitoes, then you might consider a good bug spray. I reach for DEET-free, water-resistant and non-flammable varieties.
5) Pack plenty of water to stay hydrated!
6) Consider using a hyaluronic serum before you leave the house to add, and retain, hydration to your skin.
7) If you are going somewhere like the beach or a park, and you will be in an area without shade, then it is worth investing in a portable beach umbrella– you will be glad that you did!

As the end of summer is upon us, and Labor Day is quickly approaching, many will be spending time playing in the sun to soak up the last bits of the season. With that in mind, I thought it wise to do a dedicated post as a reminder to have ample sunscreen on hand, and to apply it frequently. Here are a few products worthy of your consideration:

Ocean Potion Ever Glow Xtreme Self-Tanning Lotion ($5.49 for 8.5oz. from Walgreens): If you are looking to stay out of the sun, rather than bask in it, then you might want to try a self-tanning lotion for some color while you seek refuge under your parasol. This product, which has a refreshing mango-lime fragrance, does not contain a sunscreen, so you will need to wear a sunscreen for your protection.

NO-AD Sport Body and Face Stick SPF 50 ($6.67 for 1.5 oz. from Walmart, Walgreens and Amazon): This water-resistant sunscreen is a convenient stick that comes in a twist-up tube, like a deodorant, making it very convenient for trips to the beach. The formula is lightweight, it glides across the skin effortlessly, deposits sunscreen evenly, and it applies clear. It can be used on the face and body, and it is fragrance-free.

Coppertone Sport Lip Balm SPF 30 and SPF 50 ($2.99- $7,00 for 0.13 oz. from Bed, Bath & Beyond, Amazon and Walmart): Protecting the lips from the sun is imperative while playing out in the sun. Coppertone's Sport Lip Balms offer broad spectrum UVA/UVB, and they moisturize the lips. They have a light tropical flavor, but it does not linger.

Overall Assessment: Whichever sunscreens that we opt to use while celebrating the last days of summer, we need a gentle reminder that sunscreens must be applied with great frequency in order to remain effective. Many manufacturers suggest reapplication every 80 minutes, but I do it every 60 minutes to be on the safe side. I also do not sit in the direct sun for long periods of time, I make sure wear protective clothing, and I drink plenty of water. If you have ever experienced acute dehydration, or sun exhaustion, as I have, then you know that it is very important to remain vigilant, and to protect yourself against over-exposure.
