NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Famous Red

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Famous Red is what I would describe as a a vibrant pinkish coral kissed red that is perfect for the holiday season. The velvety texture is smooth and creamy, and it glides across the lips effortlessly and deposits color evenly. It is very long-wearing, and it neither migrates nor does it feather. I find many matte lipsticks and crayons quite drying, but do not find that this one dries and chaps my lips. If you have particularly dry lips, you might want to use a matte lip balm as a base. I love that this chubby pencil can either be used as a liner, or all over the lips. It does not twist up, and therefore it requires an appropriately sized sharpener.
According to NARS,

A lip product that gives you the convenience of a pencil with the application of a lipstick in a jumbo-size crayon design.

It instantly coats your lips with rich pigment, imparting a velvet matte finish for seamless color. Its long-lasting yet nondrying formula is enriched with special emollients for a creamy texture, while a combination of unique silicones ensures pristine color for hours. Use this pencil for lining, as an allover lip color or pair it with another lip product.

  1. Sex Machine and I were good friends for a long time. I had one in my purse and one on my vanity because I liked it so much.

    1. Sex Machine is such a great shade! That's such a perfect shade for your complexion, Marcia!

  2. I bought Dragon Girl a couple of years ago, but sadly it is way too drying for me dry lips. I should have returned it, but going to Barney’s in Boston was a schlep, so I gaze at it longingly every now and then

    1. Have you tried it over a lip balm (a more matte lip balm so that it doesn't fundamentally alter the finish of the pencil)?

  5. I love the NARS lip pencils and don't have this shade which is funny since red is my go to shade these days. Looks like I'll have to pick it up...

  6. Ok so I purchased the walkyire lip crayon but it doesn't twist up for more product, I've read that you need to sharpen it with a sharpener but how would a sharpener bring more product out of the tube? I'm confused and a bit upset that it went down fast and I have no clue if it's at its end of life or is there more in there??!!!

    1. Hi there. As I noted in this review, this lip pencil requires a sharpener and doesn't twist up. For all of my NARS lip pencils I have sharpened them without an issue, and the entire pencils were filled with product. I imagine that yours is the same, but you will need to sharpen it to get access more of the liner.
