Skin Actives Scientific Intensive Recovery Mask is a Miraculous Anti-Inflammatory Healer

I love to mask, and this time of year– when things start heating up in Los Angeles– I definitely seek out super hydrating masks. I recently discovered Skin Actives Scientific Intensive Recovery Mask, which relieves dryness, redness and irritation, and was surprised by the extent to which it deeply hydrated my skin. While I do not have dry skin, it periodically does get a little irritated, and I thought its rich hydration, coupled with its anti-inflammatory properties would make it a particularly calming and soothing mask to use. You can either leave it on freshly cleansed skin for about 10 minutes and rinse it off, or you can leave it on overnight– which I prefer to do.

It has a very lightweight gel consistency that immediately sinks into the skin. Its first ingredient, Seakelp Bioferment, which is a natural kelp extract, has healing and anti-inflammatory properties that make it suitable to treat irritated skin. With this in mind, my first thought was that this mask would be perfectly suited to calm post-peel skin. After I did a more intensive at-home peel, I applied the Intensive Recovery Mask to my face, neck and décolleté, and was pretty impressed to see that the redness began to immediately dissipate. However, what really impressed me was how my skin looked the morning following my peel and the application of this mask. My skin was amazingly soft, smooth, hydrated, nourished and lifted. There were no dry and flaky bits of skin, no signs of irritation and no redness whatsoever.

Skin Actives Scientific Intensive Recovery Mask has been called the $20.00 dupe for La Mer, but one that contains no mineral oil or petrolatum. Are they similar? Well, inasmuch as they both use Seakelp or Seaweed as an active ingredient, but Skin Actives has a much shorter and cleaner list of ingredients. However, they both do have ingredients that fight free radicals, but Skin Actives uses fermented kelp, which is a key component found in their proprietary formula.
According to Skin Actives,

Address your redness and irritation at the root with our Intensive Recovery Mask. This mask is great for providing soothing relief for issues ranging from sunburns to aesthetic treatments.

Features:
- Provides a source of antioxidants
- Reduces redness and irritation

Directions: Apply to the face once a week after cleansing. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse throroughly with warm water.
About Their Ingredients:

Featuring USDA Organic Sea Kelp from the Coast of Maine, Skin Actives Scientific Intense Recovery Mask addresses redness and irritation at their source. The formula’s kelp provides this soothing relief for issues ranging from sunburns to aesthetic treatments. The sea kelp contains fucoidan, which is great for healing, antiviral properties and more.

This bioferment ties with prebiotics - metabolites that are produced by microbes that inhibit the growth of microbes. As a result, this hydrating repair face mask relieves red, inflamed skin while offering advanced protection from free radical damage like the sun.

For best results apply to the face once a week after cleansing. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Skin Actives Scientific’s Sea Kelp Bioferment 'Coral' is probably one of their favorite ingredients because it has so many uses. It supplies a complete nutrient medium to moisturize skin and the scalp. The substrate for fermentation is kelp, a sea macroalga (Phaeophyta). Fermentation makes the cell contents of this alga readily available to our skin and scalp. This maximizes its moisturizing properties, as well as making nutrients required by the skin available. The ferment also has a calming effect that can reduce redness, itchiness and irritation.

The bioferment is rich in fucoidan, carrageenan, algin, minerals, and many active chemicals. It also provides minerals like iodine, copper, molybdate, magnesium, and others required as cofactors in enzymatic reactions of lipid metabolism and energy conversion. This product can be used as a base for many of the brand’s water-soluble DIY actives.

Skin Actives Scientific’s Sea Kelp Bioferment 'Coral' uses Laminaria Digitata as substrate for fermentation. Laminaria grows in the sublittoral zone of the northern Atlantic Ocean. Their supply base in Maine follows State of Maine regulations for sustainable harvesting. In addition, these regulations allow the kelp to be designated as USDA Organic.

What is Fucoidan?

Fucoidans are sulfated polysaccharides with structures that depend on the plant source and growing conditions. Applied to the skin, fucoidans will increase the density of collagen bundles, decrease activity of proteases (enzymes that break down dermal proteins), increase scavenging of free radicals, and increase cell proliferation. These effects would be mediated through increased expression of ß1-integrin and may also help with wound healing.

Ingredients: Seakelp (Lactobacillus/Kelp Ferment Filtrate) Bioferment, Porphyridium Polysaccharide, Fucoxanthin, Astaxanthin. This product is Vegan and Made in the USA.
Overall Assessment: This is now my post-peel go-to treatment mask because it is so effective, hydrating and affordable!
