Loving Lately: Covet-Worthy Body, Skin and Hair Care Picks

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

I have loved skin and body products since I was a kid, and if I were asked to choose between makeup and skincare I would definitely choose skincare. As an adult, I have to confess that my bathrooms look more like a mad scientist's laboratories than anything else, and the countertops are always covered with the latest products that I am testing and playing with.

I recently gathered together a rather large pile of products that I was testing and placed them on the large counter in my guest bathroom so that they were all in one clearly designated space. Some of the products were tried and true that I have used before, but I wanted to use again, but most were products that I hadn't tried. I quickly started categorizing products by type, and soon thereafter began eliminating products that I didn't like or that I found ineffective.

I had a bit of an epiphany in the process, and came to the rather stark conclusion, as someone who relishes in the routine of using products with luxurious textures, indisputable efficacy and that are a treat to use– that I didn't want to waste my time using products that I do not like. I know that sounds simple enough, but for a beauty blogger that means not testing products that don't work for my skin, or that I inherently dislike. I should also note that one of the unfortunate byproducts of turning your face, body and hair into a test lab is the inevitability of having some bad reactions, and a few of those have landed me in my doctor's office to treat weird rashes, product related dermatitis etc. Therefore, after eliminating the products that didn't work, I thought that I would share the things that I really liked a lot.
Lime & Lotus Organics Purify Activated Charcoal Facial Mask ($20.00 for 3.4 oz. from Lime & Lotus, Lime & Lotus Official Amazon Store and Etsy): This mask deeply cleans the skin and draws out impurities, but unlike many products that deep clean and detox the skin, this one is decidedly hydrating, nourishing, calming and soothing– rather than drying and potentially irritating. You simply apply it to freshly cleansed skin, leave it on for about 10-20 minutes, or until it has dried down and then rinse it off.

According to Lime & Lotus,

Purify Facial Masque was designed to provide deep cleansing, reduced inflammation, decrease in pore size and acne, and to soften fine lines, and wrinkles.

Only organic and natural ingredients such as Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Activated Charcoal, Hyaluronic Acid, Green Tea Extract, Pomegranate Extract and White Willow Bark Extract are used to create this wonderful product.

Purify Activated Charcoal Facial Masque has ingredients to cleanse, detox, hydrate, and soothe your skin without the addition of known irritants such as parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol, artificial fragrances, polysorbate-80, and other petrochemical derivatives. Designed for all skin types but works exceptionally well for dry and mature skin.

It can be used on the face or the body, though I have only been using it on my body. It is far more dry than many sugar scrubs suspended in an oil base. There is enough oil to hold the scrub together, but not so much that it requires mixing, and it also doesn't leave an oily slick on the bottom of your shower or tub. Instead, it gently exfoliates the skin, effortlessly removes dead skin cells, and it leaves skin soft, smooth and moisturized. The lovely lavender aroma is very relaxing, soothing and calming.

According to Lime & Lotus,

Our Sugar Scrub is truly a pampering lavender experience!  Lovely, indulgent, deeply exfoliating and hydrating, the pure, Organic Jojoba Oil and Shea Butter wraps around the scrubbing Cane Sugar, along with soothing Lavender, Rosehips and Borage Oil, which linger long afterwards with a calming, relaxing aroma, leaving a deeply moisturizing glow.

Pour Moi Desert Day Cream ($35.00 for 1 oz. from Pour Moi and Neiman Marcus): Formulated for desert climates, this rich and yet lightweight and fast absorbing day cream, is perfectly suited for dry climates with high temperatures (75°F — 120°F) and low humidity (5% — 45%). Extreme environmental conditions such as wind, strong sunlight, pollution and the difference between air-conditioned interiors and the sweltering outdoors make this cream the perfect pick for hot and dry summers found in arid conditions. This cream is very moisturizing, and it leaves the skin soft and smooth. Pour Moi products are very concentrated, and therefore you only need a tiny bit. This contains no sunscreen, and therefore you will need to use a separate high SPF to protect your skin from the sun. It has no detectable fragrance.

According to Pour Moi,

The climate smart Desert Day Cream is designed for those who experience desert conditions where the temperature and UV index are high but humidity is very low, and the constant exposure to air-conditioning and pollution makes matters worse for skin. This climate accelerates external skin aging. To successfully nourish and moisturize skin in this extreme climate, the uniquely formulated Desert Day Cream contains Climate Energized Beautifiers (D-CEBs) that are rich in squalane oil, oat extract, and bamboo-derived silica to lock in moisture without feeling heavy, and antioxidants and peptides round up this skin-saving formulation for maximum comfort, wellness, and glow. The Day Cream is the third step of Pour Moi's climate smart skincare ritual.

Features:
  • Hydrates and promotes healthy lipid barrier functions for instant moisture and firmness in extreme climates such as in Phoenix, Southern California, and Las Vegas, so skin is healthier on the inside and happy on the outside.
  • Absorbs quickly with no residue and locks in moisture.
  • Accounts for external factors, such as temperature, humidity, man-made conditions, pollution, and weather elements, so that skin can consistently benefit from anti-aging ingredients.
Directions: After the Serum has fully penetrated, apply one drop to the face and neck with your fingertips. Rotate the Desert Day Cream into your skincare routine when in desert climate. Allow the Day Cream to fully blend into your skin before applying sunscreen and/or makeup.

According to Pour Moi,

The climate smart Tropical Day Cream is Pour Moi's lightest moisturizer designed for those who experience tropical conditions where temperature, UV index, and humidity levels are extremely high, and the constant exposure to air-conditioning and pollution makes matters worse for skin. To successfully combat these aggressors and climate challenges, the unique formula is rich in peptides, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E, and powerful botanicals. Tropical Climate Energized Beautifiers (TR-CEBs) made of pore-clearing coconut acid, and lightweight moisture-boosting humectants round up this skin-saving formulation for maximum comfort, wellness, and glow. I have gone through numerous tubes of this scrub, and whenever I leave a tube in the shower I notice that it gets used up rather quickly since my husband uses it as well. You don't need to apply any pressure to get great results, and my skin is left scrumptiously soft and smooth after use. Baby Foot Exfoliant Foot Peel ($25.00 from BabyFoot.comBeauty Bridge and Amazon): Baby Foot Exfoliant is an all-natural, foot exfoliant that removes dead skin and callouses unlike anything that I have experienced before. It leaves feet unbelievably soft and smooth without any rigorous effort on your part. The formula features 17 types of natural extracts that allow your feet to exfoliate natural and effectively.

Baby Foot is remarkably easy to use, but should obviously be avoided if you are sensitive to any of the ingredients. It is a very active and effective enzyme peel that makes your feet molt like nothing you have ever seen before. In fact, it is so effective, and the results are so shocking, that I found it too unsightly to post a picture of my feet after they began to peel in sheets!

It is a very easy three step process, but there is a highly effective trick to ramping up the efficacy and for speeding up the results. Before you begin, you need to wash your feet thoroughly, but if you soak your feet in warm water after washing, and before using Baby Foot, your feet will begin to peel sooner and even more thoroughly.

You simply cut along the dotted line and then slip each foot into the pre-moistened plastic lined socks and seal them with the tape that is provided. You may feel a slight tingling sensation at the beginning, but I found that it only lasted for about a minute. Leave Baby Foot on for an hour so that the exfoliant can have the requisite amount of time to work its magic. Then you simply remove the Baby Foot and wash your feet with soap and water to remove all traces of the exfoliating gel.

Dead skin cells generally begin peeling within 3-7 days following your initial application, but mine began to peel the next day, and continued for the following two weeks. Had I soaked my feet a bit longer before application, the duration of my peel time would have been significantly shortened.

Baby Foot asserts that one should not forcibly remove dead skin cells when the peeling process begins, but instead to let It exfoliate gently and naturally. Some people find that their feet become dry before peeling begins, and Baby Foot suggests that they "moisturize lightly and sparingly with an oil-free beauty care product." Peeling time may vary from person to person and can take up to 2 weeks to complete.
According to Baby Foot,

Baby Foot is an innovative foot care product that will make your feet as smooth and soft as a baby's foot. The unique formula of 17 types of natural extracts allow your feet to exfoliate naturally leaving them highly moisturized.

This effective and gentle process removes the unwanted dead skin cells that have built up layer after layer. In addition, Baby Foot can improve other foot issues like: Foot Odor, Athletes Foot and Blood Circulation. So say goodbye to rough, dry, cracked soles, by using a product that really works.

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter & Aloe Body Lotion ($10.99  for 16 oz. from The Vitamin ShoppeNubian Heritage and Walmart): I have been waxing poetic about the virtues of Nubian Heritage body products lately, and I routinely celebrate their amazing fragrances, but they also have some very impressive fragrance-free products as well, and this lotion is particularly impressive. It is thick and rich, and yet fast absorbing. It effectively moisturizes dry skin without leaving behind a greasy residue, and it leaves skin very soft and smooth.

According to Nubian Heritage,

A fragrance-free gentle moisturizing lotion that blends Fair Trade Shea and Cocoa Butters with Vitamin E to nourish and soothe delicate and sensitive skin. Aloe Vera naturally hydrates the skin while Cocoa and Shea Butters soften and condition.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Butyrospermum Parka (Shea) Butter***, Ethyl Palmate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter***, Glyceryl Caprylate, Glycerin (Vegetable), Avena Sativa (Oat) Bran Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Tocopherol, Beta Glucan, Allantoin, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Phytate, Glyceryl Undecylenate, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower/Leaf Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract *Certified Organic Ingredient **Fair Trade Ingredient
Nubian Heritage 24 Hour Deodorants ($8.99 each for 2.25 oz. from Nubian HeritageWalmart and The Vitamin Shoppe): If you use natural deodorants, then I definitely recommend trying one from Nubian Heritage. However, if you use mainstream chemical-based antiperspirants and deodorants, then you may not like these. These are decidedly earthy, and they will not control perspiration. Each of the 7 deodorants are formulated with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and essential oils, and I find them moisturizing as well as effective at controlling under arm odor. I should state, however, that I have been using natural deodorants since high school, so I am in no way weaning myself from mainstream drugstore deodorants and antiperspirants. These are decidedly natural, non-GMO deodorants that are truly healthy for the skin.

If you are new to the world of natural deodorants, be aware that sometimes people with sensitive armpits can get rashes, or irritated skin. If that happens, just stop using them. I have pretty sensitive skin under my arms, and this formula doesn't irritate my skin, but I have had some natural deodorants irritate my skin over the years.

I should note that I cannot vouch for Nubian Heritage's 24 hour claim because I never have it on for a full 24 hours, but I can say that I find this formula very effective and long-wearing.

Here are the 7 Available:

Nubian Heritage African Black Soap Deodorant: This soothing deodorant nourishes the skin, and it has a very subtle aroma from which I detect the slightest citrus notes.

According to Nubian Heritage,

For centuries, African Black Soap, made with Cocoa Pod Ash and Cocoa Butter, has been used in Africa to care for the skin. Historical references to Shea Butter, a staple of African pharmacology, date back to the reported Shea Butter caravans of Cleopatra’s Egypt.

Nubian Heritage Abyssinian Oil & Chia Seed Deodorant: This deodorant smells delectable! It has a slightly sweet fruity floral type of aroma that is rich, subtle and creamy. I think that it might be my favorite of the bunch. For me, it is nothing short of magical.

According to Nubian Heritage,

Abyssinian Oil, made famous by Queen of Sheba, the ancient ruler of Ethiopia, originated in Nubia. Ancient superfoods Chia Seeds and Amaranth Extract have been cultivated since the 16th century.

Nubian Heritage Patchouli & Buriti Deodorant: I need to preface this by stating that I have never been a big fan of Patchouli, it tends to be a bit too pungent and circa 1960 for me, but this deodorant smells divine. The Patchouli is tempered by the Buriti, and it is warm and creamy without an edge.

According to Nubian Heritage,

Aromatic Patchouli complements the Amazonian beauty secret, Buriti Oil. The Buriti Palm, known as the “tree of life,” has long been prized in the Amazon for its nutrient rich content of Beta-carotene, Vitamin E, and essential fatty acids that provide rejuvenating hydration to skin.

Ingredients: Propanediol, Glycerin (Vegetable), Water, Sodium Stearate, Silica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Zinc Ricinoleate, Fragrance (Proprietary Essential Oil Blend), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*♥, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Saccharomyces Ferment, Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate, Sucrose Cocoate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Allantoin, Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuacu) Seed Butter, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Seed Oil, Pogostemon Cablin Oil. *Certified Organic Ingredient. ♥Fair Trade Ingredient.

Nubian Heritage Raw Shea Butter Deodorant: I expected that this would just smell like raw Shea Butter, but actually the essential oils create a rather warm scent, and there is a touch of Frankincense that comes through.

According to Nubian Heritage,

Historical references to Shea Butter date back to the caravans of Cleopatra’s Egypt. Enriched with essential fatty acids, Shea Butter moisturizes and softens the skin while Frankincense and Myrrh, known for their alluring aromas, provide a unique sensorial experience.

Ingredients: Propanediol, Glycerin (Vegetable), Water, Sodium Stearate, Silica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Zinc Ricinoleate, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*♥, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Saccharomyces Ferment, Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate, Sucrose Cocoate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Allantoin, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Extract, Commiphora Myrrha Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract *Certified Organic Ingredient ♥Fair Trade Ingredient.

  1. Wow, so many goodies here! I need to try the Pour Moi and Lotus & Lime products especially. I wish the steam eye mask wasn’t a single use as I have to do that every day for dry eye.
