Retinol-based skincare is recognized as among the most effective types of anti-aging products on the market today. Vitamin A softens fine lines, fades discoloration and hyperpigmentation, improves skin turnover, boosts collagen production and can manage breakouts. Higher concentrations can, however, also cause redness, irritation and peeling. I have used Retinol-based products– both over-the-counter and prescription variants– for many years, and most definitely see the benefits and can vouch for its efficacy. Since my skin is quite used to Retinol, I tend not to experience irritation, redness or peeling, but at the beginning I did, and I counteracted it by using nourishing anti-inflammatory beauty oils to calm my skin.

The most recent Retinol serum that I have been using is the Valentia Night Revive Retinol Serum (1.5% retinol), and I have nothing but good things to say about it. It neither irritated my skin, nor did cause my face to peel, and yet it created a marked luminosity within a couple of days of use. I noted a softening of my fine lines, an overall smoother and lifted appearance of my skin, and an evening of skin tone. It has lightened the slight tonal differences from my small areas of hyperpigmentation (from the sun), and I found that it nourishes and hydrates my skin, rather than dried out. Valentia Night Revive Retinol Serum has a luxurious lightweight texture that is non-sticky, fast absorbing and immediately hydrating.
According to Valentia,

A potent blend of Retinol, with essential vitamins and botanicals specifically chosen to enhance Retinols efficacy work together to create the serum your skin care dreams are made of. Retinol works down to the cellular level to stimulate collagen production and diminish even the deepest of wrinkles. Vitamin C helps Retinol penetrate deeper into the skin, while Vitamin E and Squalane nourish and hydrate, counteracting the drying effects of Retinol and maximizing anti-aging benefits. This transformative retinol serum will turn back the clock, giving you visibly smoother, rejuvenated skin.

Valentia's use guidelines:

Apply at night after cleansing, toning, and before moisturizer. If any redness or irritation occur, use every 2-3 nights until skin adjusts. Depending on your age, you may want to stick to using the Retinol Serum every other or every three nights. Make sure to use an SPF day cream or foundation with SPF 20 or higher during the day as skin can become more sensitive after Retinol use. To get the full Retinol benefits combine with our Night Revive Retinol Cream.

What to expect: Using this night cream you’ll start noticing results within just a few weeks; improved skin tone, more taught feeling skin, and a reduction in breakouts. With continued use; wrinkles begin to disappear, skin texture is softer, and overall complexion is more youthful looking.
Valentia Night Revive Retinol Serum select ingredients work together to achieve optimum results:
  • Retinol (Vitamin A): This clinically proven antioxidant is a triple threat! It works at the cellular level to stop wrinkles from forming, manages acne breakouts, and even out skin discoloration. Retinol helps reverse the clock, for more youth looking and acting skin.
  • Vitamin C: An essential nutrient that boosts Retinol’s protective effects, guarding skin against nasty free radicals and environmental damage to prevent premature aging.
  • Vitamin E: Specifically chosen for its superior moisture protection. Vitamin E floods the skin hydration, diminishing the drying effects of Retinol.
  • Squalane: Derived for pure olive oil, this nutrient-rich ingredient softens and conditions delicate skin. It further assists in mitigating the dryness caused by Retinol while reducing the appearance of fine lines.
Ingredients: Deionized Aqua (Water), Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide (botanical hyaluronic acid), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Oil), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Olive Oil Squalene, Retinol, Tocopheryl Acetate (sunflower based Vitamin E), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, (2s)-2-Amino-5-guanidinopentanoic Acid,  Organic Centella Asiatica (Gotu Kola), Wildcrafted Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail), Wildcrafted Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion), Wildcrafted Geranium Maculatum (Wild Geranium), Pentylene Glycol, Phospholipids, Alcohol, Polysorbate 20, Potassium Phosphate, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol.
Overall Assessment: If you are looking for an effective Retin A serum that also nourishes the skin, then Valentia Night Revive Retinol Serum is definitely worthy of your consideration. I will definitely replace this bottle when I finish it up.

  1. I have recently been advised that retinol, while great in the short term, eventually thins the skin and accelerates or exacerbates skin aging over time. Any thoughts about that?

    1. Was it a dermatologist or doctor who advised you of this? Retinol-based products, and any other products that exfoliate dead skin cells definitely can thin the skin if overused or abused. Very sensitive skin types try often avoid retinol-based products because they can be too aggressive for their skin. It always depends of the strength/potency and frequency of use. One of the problems that can also occur is that people can be too aggressive with their skin by using retinol based products and physical exfoliants and peels simultaneously. That can be far too aggressive and certainly can lead to thinning, traumatizing the skin and leaving it in rough shape. If I am using a retinol-based product I do not use peels, exfoliating disks, physical exfoliants, or anything else that removes dead skin cells. I think that it is always better to take a less-is-more approach to skincare otherwise it can do more harm than good.

    2. ...Also, sometimes people forget to stay vigilant about using a high SPF sunscreen (and reapplying it frequently) when they are using Retinol-based products, and this can end up causing more problems since the photo-sensitivity caused by these types of products requires serious sun protection. This can lead to hyperpigmentation, photo aging, etc., and therefore vigilance is required when using such products. If you have a concern about your skin, and that it might be prone to thinning, then I would DEFINITELY recommend having your dermatologist evaluate your skin. I had my doctor look at mine, and she actually wrote me a prescription for Retin A.

  2. This product sounds lovely as I have found many products containing retinol too drying for my skin. Do you know the percentage of retinol in the formula? How do you think it compares to Sunday Riley's Luna? Luna is one of the few retinol products that agrees with me x

    1. Hi Emily, I am very impressed by its efficacy, and that it remains gentle and nourishing. Oddly enough I do not have information on the percentage of retinol, but I am going to reach out to my contact at Valentia to get an answer for you. I have only played with LUNA, but haven't tried it over a sustained period of testing. The oil-based retinol that I use and love is Colbert MD Illumino Face Oil. I find it quite effective at importing a deep glow, gently removing dead skin cells and nourishing the skin while softening the appearance of fine lines. It has a lower amount (they don't suggest a percentage), but it is low enough that it can be used day or night (with a sincere in the daytime, of course). What kind of results do you get with Luna?

  4. This sounds like another absolute winner from Valentia! I am currently using another brands retinol cream that's a 2.5. By any chance, does it say what the retinol level is in this serum? Sorry I'm being such a pain, Helen, with so many questions lately!
