Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Naked, Lovechild and Apocalypse | Review and Swatches

Purchased by Me (Affiliate Links)

It seems that the wonders of Urban Decay's lip products are often obscured by their wildly popular eyeshadows and eye liners. Don't get me wrong, they are truly worthy of the cult status and hype that they enjoy, but I think that their lipsticks, lip liners and lip crayons are equally amazing.

I was absolutely mesmerized by the quality, texture and finish of their Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Colors, and I selected three: a nude, a pink and a vampy berry. Those three shades pretty well sum up my lip color proclivities– therefore I chose Naked, Lovechild and Apocalypse without the standard extended contemplation of the shades.
Urban Decay describes their Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color as a,

Rich and creamy lipstick with insane amounts of high-gloss shine—all captured in one chubby pencil. This addictive pencil delivers all the opaque, saturated, high-impact color of your favorite lipstick and an arresting high-gloss finish in one chubby pencil. A pigment-rich formula with a dynamic bright-to-neutral shade range in creamy and sparkly textures, it's the ideal way to bring a bit of high fashion to your everyday look. The runway-ready possibilities are endless! Be sure to check out Scandal and Flushed; both are UD.com exclusives that aren’t sold individually anywhere else!

Free of mineral oil and paraffin, this formula contains plant-derived ingredients that nourish, improve skin hydration and protect your lips. And because the barrels and boxes are color-matched to each shade, choosing the color you want is easy, even in the deep, dark depths of an oversize tote.

When your Super-Saturated pencils start to get dull, use the big barrel of our Grindhouse Double Barrel Sharpener to grind them back to a perfect point.
Urban Decay does not exaggerate when they suggest that the Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Colors are "rich and creamy with insane amounts of high-gloss shine." They offer opaque, deeply saturated color (particularly with the darker shades) and are very comfortable on the lips. While these twinkling gems have the sheen of a lip gloss, they cling to the lips like a more emollient lipstick. I find that they are long-wearing for glossy lip pencils, and I consistently get about 4 hours of wear with even fading. The emollience of the formula is mildly moisturizing with the perfect amount of cushion that makes them extremely comfortable on the lips.
These chubby lip pencils are perfect for lip gloss fans and lipstick fans alike, and for lipstick enthusiasts who aren't crazy about the messiness of lip glosses. They are easy to use, can be applied without a mirror, and offer the perfect gleaming glossy finish. They are absolutely obsession-worthy, and I cannot sufficiently underscore the extent to which I am in love with these lovely lip colors.

I have but one criticism about these lovely lippies, and that is the wastefulness associated with having to sharpen them. Furthermore, because of their creamy nature sharpening can feel like a bit of an exercise in futility. However, my mom always put creamy eye crayons in the refrigerator to firm them up in order to make them easier to sharpen, and this mitigates excessive waste of product. I tried this with these lip colors and it worked well, but it certainly does not eliminate waste altogether. I wish that Urban Decay would repackage these in a twist up tube– since I by far prefer that format.
Left to Right: Naked, Lovechild and Apocalypse

Naked is a nude pink sheen (it's more of a peachy pink nude, in my opinion)
Lovechild is a pale pink
Apocalypse is a deep plum
The gorgeous finish and rich pigmentation makes these such a joy to wear.

Overall Assessment: I love these, but would love them even more if I could twist them up instead of having to sharpen them. The quality is exquisite, the finish is gorgeous, and the wear-time is excellent.
