Each cosmetic bag is handwoven by men and women of individual homesteads in rural villages in the Kasaai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a traditionally woven textile by individuals and not mass produced in any controlled environment, so each piece has its own flair and creativity and is absolutely unique. It is a flat weave that is woven from the raffia Vinafera palm which grows wild and is endemic to the tropical region on a double heddle hand loom and takes between 3 and 4 months to weave, mostly for a few hours in the evenings after work in the fields has been done for the day. The symbols are all representative of the makers life and tells the story of birth, marriage, harvest, children, cattle and ceremonies. The purchase of this fabric supports the weavers and artisans of this age old tradition as well as the artisans who make up the finished product in South Africa. All goods are traded and made up following fair trade principles.
