NEW!!! African Botanics Pure Marula Cleansing Oil: Another Game Changer

Press Release & Press Sample (Affiliate links)

My loyalty to the beautiful products made by African Botanics is well justified, and those of you who use this magical line know exactly what I mean. With each new product that they launch, they continue to dazzle me! When Julia Noik, co-founder of African Botanics, told me that they were launching their Pure Marula Cleansing Oil I got very excited!

Marula Pure Marula Cleansing Oil is noted for its ability to:
  • Dissolve impurities & makeup (including eye makeup)
  • Clarify, oxygenate, and soften the skin
  • Regenerate the skin
This lightweight oil is an antioxidant and omega-rich oil that was formulated to gently cleanse and purify even the most sensitive skin types while removing makeup, dead skin cells as well as pollution and other impurities. It is so gentle and effective that it neither dehydrates the skin, nor causes irritation. It is suitable for combination, sensitive and dry skin types.

Use: This lovely cleansing oil can be used in the morning and the evening, and doesn't require double cleansing. Warm between 2-4 pumps of the Pure Marula Cleansing Oil into your hands, and then massage it into your face, neck and décolleté. African Botanics suggests massaging it for 1 minute in a circular motion concentrating on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. After massaging, the skin add a few drops of warm water in order to emulsify the oil, and then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

To remove eye makeup: Pump a very small amount onto a moist cotton pad, and then gently hold it over the eyes for a few seconds. With a gentle sweeping motion you will see all of your makeup dissolve. Follow up with a clean water moistened cotton pad to remove the last bits of makeup residue. According to Julia, Pure Marula Cleansing Oil is even formulated to handle stubborn waterproof makeup! In fact, Julia herself uses it to remove her waterproof mascara by applying the oil with a water moistened moist cotton pad, then pressing it gently over her closed eye area for a few seconds, and then wiping it off slowly. Finally she repeats with a clean water moistened cotton pad to remove the last bits of cleansing oil and makeup.

After use my skin is left indescribably soft, silky smooth, supple, and balanced. It gently cleans my face without leaving behind any residue, and it never strips the skin. It also lifts dead skin cells by gently exfoliating, but it never irritates the skin. Furthermore, African Botanics suggests that it, "maintains optimal skin oxygenation while overcoming environmental stress. Minimizes redness, reduces irritation and stimulates microcirculation." It must also be noted that the sensory and tactile experience is soothing to the spirit, while nourishing to the skin courtesy of the warm vanilla scent that is commingled   with the other botanicals.

I have used this cleansing oil when I wear no makeup, when I wear normal makeup, and per Julia's suggestion I applied a full face of makeup to see how her cleansing oil would fare. The result: there is no task too big or too small for this mighty cleansing oil! I don't generally wear heavy makeup, but the African Botanics Pure Marula Cleansing Oil effortlessly removed every single trace, and left my skin scrumptiously clean, balanced, and soft.
How does this magical cleansing elixir work? How do the selected ingredients work their magic?

Marula Oil, which is indigenous to South Africa, is an antioxidant rich oil with high concentrations of Vitamin E and Omegas. Marula Oil is known to reduce redness, improve elasticity, improve firmness, and to mitigate transepidermal water loss.

Moringa Oil, another treasure from South Africa, gently cleanses the skin by lifting impurities without disturbing the acid mantle, skin's natural sebum layer, or by stripping the skin. Therefore, it effectively removes makeup and environmental pollutants without disturbing the skin. Moringa Oil also has an astringent quality that tones and balances the skin, helps to clear blemishes, and improves the appearance of enlarged pores.

Baobab Oil, which is rich in Omegas 3, 6 & 9, hydrates the skin and helps to regenerate skin cells.

Cape Chamomile, which is distilled from wild flowers that are harvested in the Fynbos region of South Africa, effectively reduces inflammation, skin irritation, and swelling.

AHA Fruit Acids from Bilberry, Lemon, Pink Grapefruit, and Sugar Cane serve to gently exfoliate the skin while reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, and by promoting firmness. Furthermore, these fruit acids aid in unclogging congested pores, and improving the overall appearance of the skin by creating a smoother more youthful texture.

Overall assessment: African Botanics has undoubtedly cracked the code for cleansing oils, and trust me when I tell you that theirs is a cleansing oil to be reckoned with. If you love cleansing oils, be prepared to take your love to a whole new level! A+

  2. Darling Helen,
Will this remove hard core waterproof mascara? I am currently using the Tatcha oil and I am sick of it. Well, I am sick of the whole line by now. The eye cream doesn't do anything for my eyes certainly. If this marula cleanser can deal with my nasty mascara then I'm sold. I was suggested by a Sephora girl to try the Ren Cleansing Balm. I am not sure if you have tried it or heard of it. If so, how will you compare them?
Happy Monday to you. I hope you have a wonderful week! Here is super cold yet again :/

    1. Hello wefadetogray! I don't think that it could be possible to ever get sick of the Marula Cleansing Oil!! I am now relegating my Tatcha oil to the task of removing swatches from my arm because I am utterly transfixed by this lovely cleansing oil that Julia created. I stopped using waterproof mascara and only tried it with regular mascara, but I sent Julia an email asking her if it is formulated to remove waterproof mascara as well. My guess is that it will. I will let you know what she says. I will also hunt around to see if I have a tube of waterproof mascara somewhere so that I can test it out. I will let you know what I learn either way! I have seen the REN Cleansing Balm, but have only samples it on my hand-- so I can't say for sure. I have The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Butter Cleanser-- which is quite nice, but the texture is so different from the Marula Cleansing Oil that it is too difficult to make an adequate or meaningful comparison. I'm sorry that you are in yet another super cold snap!! It's warm and sunny here today, but a big storm is on the way later in the week! :( However, we really do need the rain!

    2. Hi wefadetogray! I just heard back from Julia, and this is what she said, "Yes, it will remove waterproof mascara with a moist cotton pad + cleansing oil, then press gently over closed eye area for a few seconds, then wipe off slowly, repeat with a clean moist cotton pad. I have removed Kevyn Aucoin "The essential mascara" this way!" I think that you will absolutely fall madly in love with this cleansing oil if you try it!

    1. Hi Bailey,

It really is amazing! I would say that this one is very worthy of your attention when you finish up your Antipodes Cleansing Butter. Do you like it? I have The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Cleansing Butter and like it, but I am definitely more in the mood to use this cleansing oil instead these days. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :-)

  7. I just got this from Space NK. When I used it, it didn't really emulsify when I added water. Is it supposed to do that? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well it does emulsify, but not in the same way as say TATCHA'S Camellia Cleansing oil that turns white and quite thin when water is added. The African Botanics Pure Marula Cleansing oil will become thinner in consistency once warm water has been introduced, but not to the same extent as the TATCHA oil. When I use The African Botanics Cleansing Oil I first massage it into my dry skin and really work it in-- if I need to add more I do, and then I add a few drops of warm water to my hands and massage my skin. The oil consistency thins out, and after I'm satisfied that my skin is thoroughly cleaned I rinse my face with warm water. Sometimes I double cleanse using another cleanser, but most of the time I don't bother. I love this stuff! :-)

  8. Thanks. I was thinking it would turn white when emulsified.

  9. Wondering if you ever use this (or any of the other cleansing oils) with a Clarisonic. I just got a Clarisonic but am not quite versed in using it. Thanks.

    1. I tend to prefer using foaming cleansers with my Clarisonic. When I use my cleansing oils alone (rather than double cleansing– first with a cleansing oil followed my a traditional cleanser). I would recommend starting out slowly so that your skin can acclimate to the Clarisonic. I would avoid using it every single day at the beginning, and I wouldn't press it into the skin. Instead I would begin using it a few times a week, and use a light hand. I would experiment, and see which of your cleansers gives you the best results. Are you liking it so far? I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE my Clarisonic! :-)

  10. I haven't used my Clarisonic yet. That's why I asked for your advice. Thank you.

    1. I hope that you love it as much as I do! I have been using mine for years, and can't imagine not having it. After trying it various ways throughout the years I finally determined that I prefer using it in the shower in the mornings. I do one full cycle on my face and then a second cycle on my neck and décolleté. It's easy and mess free since I am standing in the shower rather than standing over the sink in the bathroom. Plus I have found that I can condition my hair while I am using my Clarisonic. I don't store it in the shower because it is such a bacteria-laden environment, but I do leave an assortment of cleansers in the shower so that I can switch things up. I also don't use my Clarisonic on the days that I use an exfoliant on my skin since that would be too much. It's a really lovely tool, and it does such a great job of cleaning, removing gunk from pores, removing dead skin cells that you will notice that you will need less product to achieve great results (oils, serums, moisturizers etc.). I also avoid using it directly under my eyes, but I do periodically use it on my lips to exfoliate them. :-)

  11. Thank you for your reply which is well thought-out and helpful as usual. I can see the convenience of using it in the shower. I was thinking it would be something that would be best used prior to using treatments, masks, serums, etc. so that the penetration would be deeper/more complete. Most of the treatments and masks I use in the evening, though. I do want to tell you that since I have been following your blog and trying out some of your recommendations, I have seen a change in my skin. I noticed the other day that the majority of my pores have gone from small to noticeable to mostly small to not-noticeable. I have always been willing to purchase department store (vs. drugstore) skin products but they have not always performed for me. I also am more faithful in the cleansing routine, mostly because I enjoy the products I think.

    1. Sorry for the slow response! I somehow lost track of comments because I got super busy at work– so much so that I was consumed by it!

I'm so happy that you found my reply so useful and helpful! It's definitely super convenient to use in the shower, and it is definitely amazingly effective when used before treatments. It really allows deeper penetration of products (and the use of less).

I'm a so happy that you have seen positive changes in your skin since reading my blog and trying out some of my tried and true products, methods of use etc. It's all trial and error to find what works best, and it's so gratifying when I find winning combinations that work for me and you! That's amazing that you have seen such positive changes in the appearance of your pore size!!!!!!!!!! I'm thrilled to hear that you are more faithful to your cleansing routine as well! I'm so pleased for you!!!!!! :-)
