Aesop Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste and Aesop Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream | Review #Aesop

Purchased (Affiliate Links)

I am not entirely sure why I don't feature Australian skincare brand, Aesop, more often than I do– because I really enjoy their products, and find them such a wonderful sensory treat. Each time I go to their counter at Barneys New York I come home with something, and on my last trip I purchased Aesop Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste and Aesop Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream after feeling and smelling both.

About Aesop,

Aesop was established in 1987. We are headquartered in Melbourne, and have offices and stores in many parts of the world.

Our objective has always been to formulate skin, hair and body care products of the finest quality; we investigate widely to source plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients, and use only those with a proven record of safety and efficacy. In each of our unique stores, informed consultants are pleased to introduce the Aesop range and to guide your selections.
Aesop Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste ($53.00 for oz. from Nordstrom, SkinStore and Saks Fifth Avenue): This is a non-lathering cream-based exfoliator that uses fine quartz and lactic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. The former physically exfoliates skin while the latter helps to dissolve dead skin cells, and the combination of the two simultaneously removes dirt and helps to clear clogged pores. The end result is thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, and yet unstripped, skin that is rendered soft, smooth and supple. Furthermore, it rinses very clean and therefore leaves behind no greasy residue. One can detect the aromas of the Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, the Lavender Oil and the Rosemary Oil, and their combination is at once earthy, calming and very pleasant. This is well suited to my normal/combination skin.

According to Aesop,

Fine riverbed quartz contained in a cream base sloughs away tired surface cells while lactic acid offers a mild chemical exfoliation to leave skin immediately cleansed, soft and polished. Aesop product formulations use botanical and scientifically validated man-made ingredients of the highest quality.

Skin Types: Normal, dry and mildly sensitive skin, frequent travellers, shavers, winter and cool climates.
Suggested Directions: Dispense half a teaspoon into the palm of your hand. Work over your face and neck, including the lips. Avoid the immediate eye area. Allow the quartz and lactic acid to gently exfoliate by employing minimal pressure. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then follow with your preferred Aesop toner and hydrator.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Quartz, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Cetearyl Alcohol, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Ceteareth-20, Glycerin, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, C12-16 Alcohols, Lactic Acid, Ormenis Multicaulis Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Disodium EDTA, Magnesium Nitrate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazolinone, Linalool, d-Limonene.
Aesop Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream ($53.00 for 2 oz. from Nordstrom): This is such an interesting hydrating skin cream, and it is unlike anything else in my arsenal. It is a light to medium weight, very hydrating and extremely fast-absorbing cream, and it leaves behind no residue whatsoever. In fact, it offers a matte finish– which doubles as a primer, for me. It has an earthy nutty woodsy aroma that lingers for about 10 minutes before dissipating. If you love matte finishes, and creams that do double duty as effective arming bases, then you will definitely want to consider this cream.

According to Aesop,

The complex blend of nut and plant extracts in this extensively researched formula absorbs swiftly, providing antioxidant fortification and richly nourishing hydration without a weighty after-feel. Superbly emollient cold-pressed macadamia nut oil softens the skin, while camellia nut oil and chamomile oil pacify irritation and patchiness. Aesop product formulations use botanical and scientifically validated man-made ingredients of the highest quality.

Skin Types: Normal, dry and sensitive skin.

Suggested Directions: Massage half a teaspoon into cleansed and toned skin.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, PEG-20 Stearate, Palmitic Acid, Glyceryl Stearate, Steareth-21, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Phenoxyethanol, Stearic Acid, Coco-Caprylate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Fusanus Spicatus Wood Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Ormenis Multicaulis Oil, Benzoic Acid, Farnesol, Linalool, Dehydroacetic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Citrate, Limonene, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Beta-Carotene, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract.
Overall Assessment: I am happy with my purchases, and will definitely repurchase the Purifying Facial Exfoliant Paste when I work my way through this tube. I doubt that I will repurchase the Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream because I have so many creams to use, and my inclination would be to try another cream from Aesop next time. It's not that I don't enjoy using this cream, but I do prefer a more luminous finish rather than one that is matte for my normal to combination skin. Don't get me wrong, I will definitely finish this jar, and I don't regret my purchase, but I suspect that I will be looking to try something else once I finish it.

  1. I love all the moisturizers with a nutty aroma so I probably would love this one from Aesop. Next time I'm at Barneys, I will try a sample - hope they carry the brand in our little Boston store

  2. I've wondered about Aesop since it sounds so nice but I think that the fragrance wouldn't agree with me.
