Makeup Wars! My Favorite Nude Lipsticks

Press Sample & Purchased (Affiliate Links)

The Makeup Wars! Team is featuring favorite colors in makeup products, and I decided to share some of my most beloved nude lipsticks. As longtime readers undoubtedly know, I have a serious penchant for nude lipsticks, and I wear them more than any other type of lipstick shade. While I have amassed quite a collection, I decided to focus on a few of my most coveted luxury brands.
My most reached for shades tend to run the spectrum from peachy nudes to pink nudes, and after taking a good look at my collection I narrowed my current favorites down to ten that I remain absolutely in love with!
Burberry Kisses Nude Beige No. 01 ($34.00 from Burberry, Nordstrom, Sephora, Net-A-Porter and Saks Fifth Avenue): This weightless, gel-textured formula offers buildable coverage and very comfortable wear. It glides across the lips effortlessly, deposits color evenly, and it stays put for hours. Nude Beige No. 01 is a gorgeous peachy beige nude that is very flattering on!

TOM FORD Beauty Nude Vanille ($53.00 & £40.00 from NordstromNeiman MarcusBergdorf GoodmanBloomingdale'sSelfridgesHarrods and John Lewis): Tom Ford Lip Color in Nude Vanille is a gorgeous a pale nude peachy pink, and while it leans warm in the tube, this gorgeous chameleon of a lipstick morphs once it warms up on the lips. On me, it becomes a touch more pink– which is preferable given my cool-toned complexion.

Tactile pleasure and desirable aesthetic sensibilities aside- it would mean nothing if the contents were not as glorious as the exterior packaging. The lipstick formula is creamy dreamy, highly pigmented, opaque in one pass (but buildable to maximum opacity and pigmentation), and comfortable on the lips with the perfect amount of cushion.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick in Nude Beige ($37.00 for 0.12 oz. from Yves Saint Laurent BeautyNordstromSephoraNeiman MarcusSaks Fifth AvenueBergdorf GoodmanBloomingdale's and Lord & Taylor): While it too, is a peachy pink, it is a bit deeper and darker than Nude Vanille, but it is definitely in the same color family.

The consistency of Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick is very creamy, buttery soft and silky smooth. It glides across the lips like a dream, deposits opaque color evenly, and  it neither settles into lip lines, nor does it bleed.  It boasts a gorgeous sheen, is very comfortable on this lips, and I find it lightly moisturizing, rather than drying. Nude Beige, which is described as a, "creamy neutral beige" is a stunning peachy pink nude that is infinitely flattering on the skin, and it can be sheered out for a natural wash of color, or built up for maximum opacity. I get about 3 hours of wear before I need to reapply it, but if I apply it over a more matte textured lip balm it increases the wear-time significantly. While it has the well-known YSL sweet, fruity scent, I find that it fades soon upon application.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick Lipstick in N° 44 Nude Lavallière ($37.00 for 0.15 oz. from Yves Saint LaurentBarneys New YorkNordstromSephoraBloomingdale'sNeiman MarcusBergdorf GoodmanSaks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor): The formula is described as, "an oil-in-a-stick, medium-coverage lipstick with an innovative texture that provides high-performance color and irreverent shine while it conditions the lips." Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick Lipstick is an oil-infused lipstick that resides somewhere between a lipstick and a tinted lip balm, and the formula imparts a gorgeous wash of color and shine while hydrating your lips. It glides across the lips effortlessly, deposits color evenly, and it neither feathers, nor migrates. It has the perfect amount of cushion to provide comfortable wear, and while it is quite emollient, I do find that I can get a couple of hours of wear from a single application. If, however, you are having a beverage there will be a balmy transfer to the glass.

Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick Lipstick in N° 44 Nude Lavallière is a pinkish nude brown that is quite sheer, but it does offer some pigmentation. This particular shade does not really lend itself to a tremendous color payoff, because it is a light nude-leaning pinky brown, but it does build somewhat after a few passes. It does have the quintessential fruity mango YSL aroma, but I have to say that it completely disappears after about 5 minutes, and therefore will not likely bother people who don't like fragrance in their lip products. This gem of a lipstick leaves my lips soft, smooth, supple and hydrated. In fact, I am so smitten with the formula that I am trying to figure out which shades to purchase next!

Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy102 Essenza ($38.00 from Giorgio Armani, Barneys New York, Nordstrom, Sephora, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Selfridges): Rouge Ecstasy Lipsticks are described as having a "velvety-soft formula designed to coat your lips in a luminous shade that lasts all day." There is absolutely no question that it boasts a sublime velvety texture that feels ultra-luxe on the lips. It is emollient, comfortable to wear, and 102 Essenza lasts several hours before I need to touch up. Essenza is a gorgeous pale pink nude that is utterly breathtaking.
Left to Right: Burberry Kisses Nude Beige No. 01, TOM FORD Beauty Nude Vanille, YSL Rouge Volupté Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick in Nude Beige, YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick Lipstick in N° 44 Nude Lavallière and Giorgio Armani Rouge Ecstasy102 Essenza.
RODIN Luxury Lipstick So Mod ($38.00 for 0.14 oz. from Rodin Olio LussoNordstromBarneys New Yorkb-glowingNet-A-Porter and Beauty Habit): RODIN Olio Lusso Luxury Lipstick in So Mod is a stunning pink nude that is Linda Rodin's chic nod to the iconic mod 1960s of Twiggy and Brigitte Bardot.

This gorgeous lipstick, which is infused with Olio Lusso, boasts an ultra creamy texture, stunning pigmentation, and a dries down to a soft matte finish with dimension. Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Lipsticks glide across the lips effortlessly, deposit color evenly, melt into your lips perfectly, and they neither bleed, nor do they settle into lip lines. RODIN Olio Lusso Luxury Lipsticks are long-wearing, very comfortable on the lips, have the perfect amount of cushion, and aren't in the least bit drying. In fact, the blend of 11 oils, that are used in Olio Lusso, provide luscious hydration and nourishment. There is no discernible taste or fragrance, and therefore this lipstick formula should pose no problem for those among you with a sensitivity or aversion to fragrant lipsticks.

SURRATT Lipslique in Chuchoter ($34.00 from Barneys New York, Sephora, Blue Mercury, Cult Beauty, Net-A-Porter and Space NK): Surratt Lipsliques boast a unique formula that has a fantastic hydrating effect, the perfect amount of cushion, and they feel fantastic on the lips. One might expect that the more moisturizing formula would lend itself to reduced wear-time, but these buildable coverage beauties are longer-wearing than one might expect (particularly true of the darker shades that have all of the coverage of a stain without the tendency to dry out the lips).

Chuchoter is the ultimate pinky nude, and it does not possess shimmering and glimmering pearl. It, in fact, resides somewhere in the lipstick/lip balm hybrid realm, and while the coverage is buildable it always allows your lips to shine through. It is that perfect my lips but better shade that you can put on without a mirror, and look perfect every time.

BITE Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Cava ($26.00 from Sephora): Cava, which is described as a lilac beige, is actually an utterly gorgeous pinky lilac nude with a lovely sheen. In the tube it looks like it may have been intended for the High Priestess of the Zombie Apocalypse, but it is actually a very flattering, and infinitely wearable nude. It feels creamy and substantial, and yet it is very comfortable and long-wearing.

HOURGLASS Girl Lip Stylo Influencer and Believer ($32.00 each for .08 oz. / 2.4 g. from HOURGLASSSephoraSpace NK, Blue MercuryBarneys New YorkNordstromBergdorf GoodmanHarvey Nicols (£26.00) and Net-A-Porter): Each of the Girl Lip Stylos are remarkably silky smooth, and they truly feel weightless on the lips. They boast the perfect amount of cushion for comfortable wear, and they have a staggeringly beautiful lustrous finish. Ingredients such as Shea Butter, Jojoba, Mimosa and Sunflower Seed make this nourishing formula moisturizing– leaving lips soft, supple, ultra-smooth and hydrated. Despite their emollience, the GIRL Lip Stylo formula adheres to the lips with some tenacity, and has impressive wear-time.

While each of the colors offer medium to full opaque coverage, they can also be sheered out for a subtle wash of color. They glide across the lips effortlessly, deposit color evenly, and they neither settle into lip lines, nor do they feather.

When I compare the HOURGLASS Girl Lip Stylos to their original Femme Nude Lip Stylos, I would characterize the former as glossier and more emollient, and the latter as dryer and thicker in consistency.

While each of the GIRL Lip Stylos boast a beautiful luster and luminosity, I can see no glitter or shimmer on my lips or in the arm swatches. They have a certain depth and dimension despite their lack of shimmer, and therefore one need not worry that they appear flat or lifeless on the lips. Instead, they capture the light beautifully and create the appearance of fuller lips.

Influencer: is described as a deep rose beige. Like Achiever, there is a brown in this shade.
Believer: is described as peachy beige. I would call it a peachy beige nude.
Left to Right: RODIN Luxury Lipstick So Mod, SURRATT Lipslique in Chuchoter, BITE Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Cava and HOURGLASS Girl Lip Stylo Influencer and Believer.

Overall Assessment: High quality nude lipsticks in flattering shades of pink, peach and pinky peach make me deliriously happy. If you are similarly inclined to wear these shades, then I cannot sufficiently express the extent to which these gems are worthy of your attention.

  2. My confession: I really don't get the point of 'nude' lipsticks. What's the point if it looks just like your plain lips?

    1. The trick with nude lipsticks is finding the right shade for your complexion. When done right it doesn't look light plain lips at all, and is very flattering. When the wrong shade is selected it can look light one is a zombie!

    3. That, or swatch some nude shades to see which appeal to you, and that look like a good match for your skin tone, and the pigmentation in your lips.

    1. Nudes are definitely tricky! When they are a bad fit, it's easy to look like the high priestess of the zombie apocalypse! When they are good, however, they are amazing! The two Hourglass shades are definitely worth checking out! I think that you will find several to love from the 20 in that collection!
