The necessity to use sunscreen simply cannot be sufficiently underscored, and I, for one don't even walk to my car without slathering myself with a minimum SPF 30, but actually prefer higher sun protection factor on my face, neck, décolleté and hands. These vulnerable areas of the body receive so much sun exposure that one has to be particularly diligent about protecting them. My family dermatologist also happens to be a well-known surgeon who scared me into sunscreen submission long ago as he told me about the skin cancer that he sees on a daily basis.

When I was contacted to test and review Zo Skin Health Oclipse Smart Tone SPF 50, I was thrilled to try this new innovative sunscreen. I had tried one of Dr. Obagi's sunscreens years ago, and thought that it was absolutely amazing, and therefore couldn't wait to see this new advanced technology sunscreen.
Press Release:
ZO Skin Health, Inc. is pleased to announce the launch of Oclipse® Smart Tone SPF 50 (SPF), a revolutionary new broad-spectrum sunscreen with patented color-bursting beads that match any skin tone. Developed by legendary dermatologist Dr. Zein Obagi, MD, Oclipse® Smart Tone offers a powerful dose of UVA and UVB all day sun protection, while also helping to shield the skin from cell damaging high energy visible (HEV) light. The multi-tasking formula addresses every need, from helping skin support its own natural repair process to helping tackle irritation and pigmentation, all while drenching the skin with conditioners to soften and soothe.

What’s especially unique about Oclipse® Smart Tone is that it contains micro-beads which burst when rubbed into skin to create customizable color on any skin tone, creating a perfect tint to be worn alone or as a make-up primer.

The technologically-advanced formula is super-charged with soothing extracts of Petasites Japonicus Root Extract and Beta Glucan to minimize irritants that can cause redness. The organic sunscreen is also infused with Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil to provide moisture and aid in lipid repair. To discourage the formation of new pigmentation and freckles, it’s fortified with a healthy dose of vitamin C.

“Smart Tone’s groundbreaking formula is both a novel advance in sunscreen and an ideal fit for our growing portfolio of highly differentiated medical technology products focused on skin disorders and skin health,” says James Headley, CEO and President, ZO Skin Health, Inc. “It’s one of the reasons why we are one of the fastest growing skincare companies in the world. We’re incredibly proud of this product – it is the next generation of sunscreen.”

“Using my many decades of experience as a dermatologist, scientist and pathologist, I have developed this sunscreen to protect the skin, restore the skin, and maintain skin health,” says Zein Obagi, M.D. “Now everyone can reap the benefits of this science.”
My Experience: Zo Skin Health Oclipse Smart Tone SPF 50 is a highly effective broad-spectrum sunscreen that employs advanced cutting-edge technology. Among the novel aspects of this sunscreen is its ability to match any skin tone, and it certainly did that for my skin. The customizable color beads, with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, somehow magically adjust to match any skin tone while providing additional protection for the skin against HEV light.

The nourishing formula boasts an exclusive proprietary 12-hour time release antioxidant complex that protects the skin against photo-damage.

The texture is creamy, soft and emollient, but not is the least bit greasy. It sinks in quickly allowing one to apply their makeup immediately. It is velvety smooth, offers hydration, and leaves the skin soft and supple.  Furthermore,  Oclipse Smart Tone's ability to match individual skin tones means that an even-toned perfected complexion is one of the lovely benefits of using this sunscreen.

Benefits:
  • Customizable color beads with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection to match any skin tone
  • Provides additional protection against HEV light
  • Anti-redness properties
  • Exclusive 12-hour time release antioxidant complex guards against photo-damage
Suggested Use: "Apply 15 minutes prior to sun exposure. Apply a dime size amount to clean skin and blend over face and neck. A hint of color will slowly develop as the product is applied. Reapply at least every two hours. For children under 6 months of age: Ask a doctor."

Overall Assessment: I'm very impressed by this sunscreen because it is so effective at protecting the skin, but one needs to be constantly reminded that sunscreen must to be reapplied every two hours to  protect the skin against the harmful rays of the sun. All too often, we run about with a false sense of security because we applied sunscreen in the morning, but forgot to reapply it at any point during the day. Therefore, even the best sunscreen on the planet is only effective if continually reapplied throughout the day. While I am diligent about applying my sunscreen every single day, I am not always as good about my reapplication. Recalling some of the stories that my dermatologist told me is all the motivation that I need to reapply my sunscreen throughout the day!

  3. If it matches my skintone and it's cruelty free, I'll try it! It sounds awesome :) I always apply SPF before I leave the house, but unless I'm going to be outside for a prolonged period of time, I don't reapply throughout the day.

    1. The Paula's Choice website lists ZO Skin Health products on the Cruelty Free list. I don't think that you will have a problem with the skin match– I have not found it to add any weird pigmentation to my skin, but instead just appears to even out skin tone and make my skin look and feel great. Like you, if I won't be outdoors for extended periods of time I tend to get pretty relaxed about reapplication. I am really making an effort to reapply when I am in and out all day, or at work when I have longs walks across campus between teaching and running errands.

    1. I agree with you about having a preference for an SPF 50. I have often used between a 30-40, but really do prefer the added protection. The CC cream aspect is brilliant!

  5. I always forget about reapplication on myself. I remember for the kids and you'd think I'd get at myself at the same time. Lately I've been carrying around an SPF stick in my makeup bag so when I reapply my gloss I can remember my face at least (my big ass forehead burns right away lol)

    1. Reapplication is always the hardest to remember once you get busy during the day! Of course you would remember with your kids, but somehow forget to reapply on yourself! At least you are carrying around the SPF stick in your makeup bag– that's a great way to force yourself to remember! That's a great idea!

    1. It's an incredible product, but it is definitely expensive! For me it is definitely worth it, and I'm so impressed that I plan on buying a replacement one I use this up. Living in LA, I need all of the added protection that I can get, and an effective SPF 50 is a great idea!

  11. Do you know how it holds up when exercising outside?

    1. Hi Sara,

It isn't waterproof so I suspect that you would definitely need to reapply it frequently. I have worn it on vigorous walks and it stated put, but if you are running or swimming, or doing something that has you sweating profusely you might want to opt for something more waterproof than this. That said, if your exercise is less vigorous then I suspect it will hold up fine. It's a really lovely sunscreen!
