Beautybox Five January 2015 | Unveiling and Review

 Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

Each month BB5 creates a theme-based box, and this month is about celebrating the new year by embracing the new opportunities that it brings.

The five items selected range from makeup to cleansing products, and are a combination of deluxe samples and full size products.
1) Coastal Scents Eye Shadow (Retail $1.95-$24.00): The colors that I was sent are an assortment of warm and cool neutral shades that you would find in one of their mega-palettes. Of the four shades shown, all but one was silky smooth and ultra pigmented. The deep charcoal shade (shown below in the top left) was a bit dry and stiff from pan to skin, but would probably be a gorgeous liner if applied with a damp brush. The colors are rich, gorgeous and infinitely wearable! #coastalscents

2) Sally Hansen Salon Effects (Full Size. Retail $9.99): "Sally knows nails are the best accessory. Now, Sally makes it easy to get a salon effect any time, any place. It wears like nail polish because it IS nail polish. No dry time, so you’re ready to go." These easy to apply nail strips are said to last up to 10 days and can be easily removed with nail polish remover. They have 24 fun designs to choose from. #sallyhansen

3) Ultraflesh The Gold Standard Mascara in Blackout (Retail $21.00): I went looking to find more product information about this mascara, but it seems that the Ultraflesh website has been taken down, and their Facebook page hasn't been updated since 2011. I am not sure whether they are updating their website, or if they are no longer in business. Therefore, all I can tell you is that this mascara is supposed to give you "dramatic, thicker lashes…and dramatic results…." #fusionbeauty

4) Softsoap Nutri Serums Vitamin E Body Wash (Deluxe sample. Retail $8.00 for 15 oz.): "Leaves skin deeply hydrated and soft. Absorbs quickly as it cleans. Softening serum pearls and vitamin E for soft, healthy looking skin." #softsoap

5) Garnier Fructis Daily Care Fortifying Shampoo (Deluxe sample. Retail $3.99 for 13 oz.): "Get  an extra boost of strength and energy from Daily Care Shampoo. Works deep to strengthen the hair and conditions the surface for a healthy shine. Gentle enough for everyday use." #garnier
Swatched Left to Right: Amber Bronze, Nude, Opal Black and Platinum Blue
Overall Assessment: The BB5 January box offered a nice assortment of products, but my favorite was definitely the eyeshadow palette! As is the case each month, the value of the products exceeded the monthly cost of the subscription.

You can win full size versions of the products offered this month by sharing your box on Instagram. Simply state which products are your favorites and use the hashtag #bb5fav and use their handle @beautybox5.

  1. My sweets, completely unrelated to your post: I got my Lipstick Queen in Medieval today and I thought of you instantly. Not necessarily because of the color, which is gorgeous and I think you would adore, but because of the packaging: very seicento. I also, not heeding the voice of wisdom, bought a new face oil, Indie Lee squalane face oil. Let's hope it doesn't destroy my skin since just this Friday I renewed all my base makeup from concealer to powder. I cannot help it my dearest one. I need to change my face routine otherwise I stop doing it and no one wants to see my red cheeks in the nude ;)

    Sending you tons of light,

    1. Very seicento, indeed! I just love the way your brilliant mind works! I can't wait to hear what you think about this new oil, and I am crossing my fingers that it works wonders on your skin! Thank you for sending tons of light, and I send healthy doses back to you! xoxoxox

  2. UltraFlesh is gone so that's an old mascara that I probably wouldn't use.
Your Coastal Scent swatches are the best I've seen for this box.

    1. Thank you about the swatches! Wow, then I wonder why they even included this mascara in the January box! Thank you for confirming my suspicion!

  3. A little reading around the 'net gives me the distinct impression that the mascara company has been defunct for at least two years. Where did BB5 get this old stuff and why are they pawning it off on their unsuspecting subscribers? I think, as a significant beauty blogger, maybe you could pose that question to them and enlighten everyone. Also, perhaps it will give them a heads-up that this is not unnoticed by their consumers. .....just a thought....

    1. That was my conclusion as well, and then Marcia confirmed our suspicions. I do find it rather odd that BB5 would have included a discontinued product in their box, and especially so if the mascara company has been out of business for that long. I will see what I can find out. I definitely don't plan on testing it out on my sensitive eyes now! I will let you know what I learn!

  4. Did they respond to you? You might want to try Birchbox or GlossyBox instead of BB5!

    1. I have been out of town, and haven't had a free moment to send them an email. I've been on a work deadline that has been consuming my time, but I will definitely send them an email when I have a moment! I will definitely report my findings.

    1. No need to be sorry! I always make it a priority to post every single day, no matter how busy I am, but sometimes it takes a few extra days do get through all of my emails– let alone send out additional emails! I hope that you have a lovely weekend!

    1. It's pretty weird. They did provide a hashtag that appears to go to another company, or something– so I wonder if the company was purchased and will relaunch. I'm not sure, and don't know what to make of it!
