Burberry Sheer Eye Shadows in Pale Barley, Rosewood & Midnight Brown: Review & Swatches

Since I am loving currently all things Burberry Beauty, I thought that this would be the perfect time to review three of their top-selling Sheer Eye Shadows: Pale Barley (No. 22), Rosewood (No. 09), and Midnight Brown (No. 21). These three shades have become makeup wardrobe staples for me because the colors and the quality are simply extraordinary.

The packaging itself is luxe and hefty, but as noted in my Blueberry Lip Mist review, "Another thing that can be a bit of a challenge is the presence of the magnet closure mechanism that is definitely a nice feature when in use, but can become somewhat problematic when being stored. Those very magnets simultaneously attract and repel other makeup- making your makeup storage an active kinetic space! It makes stacking them problematic and at times somewhat frustrating, but it is an inconvenience that I will happily endure because the products themselves are amazing."
Burberry Sheer Eye Shadows can be used both wet and dry- therefore if you want to increase the depth and intensity apply them with a dampened brush and see them spring to life with greater vigor!

According to Burberry, "Burberry Eye Enhancer comes in twenty weather inspired shades from iconic trench to smoky metal. The shadows can be blended to create a range of eye enhancing colours
The innovative formula uses silicones for smooth and flawless application and contains micronised satin smooth pigments to ensure long-lasting colour."

Pale Barley is a golden beige at first blush, but the color is so complex that sometimes it reads as a neutral golden taupe. It has a gorgeous shimmer finish with absolutely no fallout. It is creamy and dreamy to apply, and I find it long-wearing with or without primer, but I do not have oily eyelids. You will definitely enliven the color over a primer.

Rosewood is a delightful and complex Taupe with a cool rose brown base. Like the other two shades it contains a refined shimmer with no fallout. It is gloriously creamy, and a joy to use.

Midnight Brown is a GORGEOUS and complex brown with a hint of taupe and plum, but the color modulates when entertained by the play of light. Like Pale Barley and Rosewood, it has a lovely shimmer that causes it to have an ethereal glow. There is absolutely positively no fallout, whatsoever. It's just pure unmitigated creamy gorgeousness.

    1. I would either have the SA call you as soon as it comes in, or just order it online-- you definitely need Pale Barley in your life, Gummy! Rosewood and Midnight Brown are also amazing. I prefer using them dry, but I do find that applying Midnight Brown damp to the lower lashline yields beautiful results though. :D

    Gorgeous!

Ps. Last week I asked the Burberry SA if she had any of the Summer Sheer Glow highlighter/bronzer behind the counter. And she said, "yes"!!! I had not expected that response and I had already come to terms with not getting it.

    1. I know, right?! I officially entered Burberry Crazy-town. Wait until you see the trouble I got myself into when I went back for second and third helpings! LOL!!!!!!!!!! They do blend like a dream. I picked up Mulberry too-- it's GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rosewood is DIVINE!!!! You might need it, my love!!! :-)

  10. I'm wearing Pale Barley and Midnight Brown today. They are such easy colors for me to wear and they always look well blended. I don't have as much luck with Rosewood but I should try it wet, I've never used these wet.
I wish I could wear more than just e/s from Burberry but these are so great that it satisfies me anyway.

    1. I imagine that Pale Barley and Midnight Brown look stunning on you. I guess you aren't thrilled by Rosewood for the same reason that you weren't crazy about RBR Solstice Halcyon (if memory serves). If you have Rosewood give it a shot wet-- it might yield the results you want.

While the fragrance in Burberry makeup doesn't bother me- I wish that they didn't add it because it is unnecessary, and it is a deal breaker for so many people!

  11. I have pale barley and trench. I think they are both beautiful wearable colors that I will never tire of wearing. I wonder if Rosewood is similar to Mulberry, which was LE.

    1. Hi Beth! Trench is definitely on my list! I bought Mulberry and will swatch and review it soon. It is quite different from Rosewood-- it has much more red in it-- it's a bit more burgundy, but still quite wearable. :)

  12. I have both Pale Barley and Midnight Brown and I love both! After seeing your swatches, I think I definitely need Rosewood. Maybe I'll pick that up along with one of their lip glows from the Spring Collection. I've yet to meet a Burberry Beauty Product I didn't like!

    1. Hi Jules!! Pale Barley and Midnight Brown are now on the very short list of my all time favorite eyeshadows! Rosewood is really lovely. I have been enjoying using it as a simple wash of color with a winged liner. OMG- I am afraid that i will want most of the Spring Collection, but I will definitely have to limit myself to a few pieces!! I completely agree with you-- I have yet to meet a Burberry Beauty product that I don't like!! Happy Holidays!! :)

  13. I have Dark Sable - wonderful deep color. Great in the crease & as a liner. Blends like a dream. I tried Mulberry too - not a good color for me even though it is gorgeous.
Rosewood & Midnight Brown are on my wishlist along with several Lip Sheers & Lip Glosses.

    1. Hi lov2read68! I am going to have to check out Dark Sable! Mulberry is a gorgeous color, and I was very concerned that it would bother my eyes because eyeshadows with lots of red in them tend to irritate my eyes. I have only worn it once, but i did so without incident. We'll see if that changes. Rosewood & Midnight Brown are simply amazing-- I think that you will really love them! The Lip Mists and Lip Glosses are delightful, but I would definitely recommend smelling them and trying them, if possible- just in case they are too heavily fragranced for your liking. Happy Holidays!!! xx

  15. I love midnight brown but I disliked the rosiness of rosewood. My skin really made it look quite pink :(

    1. I think that Midnight Brown is my favorite of all of the Burberry eye shadows. I can definitely see how the rosiness of Rosewood could pose a problem in pulling too pink on some people. If you have it, trying mixing it with Midnight Brown to cut some of the pink. :)
