Wearing comfortable shoes is essential when I am at work. I teach at a sprawling university, and my classroom and lecture halls are a great distance from my department. I also intentionally park at the far end of campus and always take the stairs rather than elevators in order to incorporate vigorous walking into my daily routine. Even when I need to access the stacks on the 8th floor of the library, I take the stairs. Unsurprisingly, I often carry what feels like half of my weight in books, papers, and anything else that I need on a given day. Therefore, I cannot sufficiently underscore the need to wear comfortable and supportive shoes, and I have no room in my life to wear uncomfortable shoes that will cause foot pain when I walk at a fast pace.
Given that I am in Southern California, and it is essentially warm most of the year, I prefer wearing sandals a great deal of the time.
