Springtime Skincare Tips

Now that the weather is warming up it is time to make some adjustments to our skincare routines, and there are a few important steps that I live by. Here are a few easy changes that will deliver tangible results.

1) Check the expiration on your sunscreens and replace them if they have expired. I do not leave the house wearing anything less than an SPF30 no matter what the weather is like (and this is year round, not just in the warm weather). Since we are likely to spend more time outside during the warmer weather, it is imperative not to skip this step. N.B. Remember to reapply your sunscreen frequently.

2) When outdoors for longer periods of time make sure to wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection from the harsh rays of the sun.

3) Switch out your heavier lotions and creams for lighter ones, but consider adding something like a Hyaluronic Acid based serum to further hydrate the skin.

4) Consider using hydration masks, or sleeping masks, once or twice a week to keep skin fresh and hydrated.

5) Consider simplifying your skincare routine during the warmer months. I like to simplify my routine during the warm weather, and I use fewer products and wear even less makeup. I also switch out my foundation for tinted moisturizers, and prefer that light feeling and light coverage.

6) Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and carry a bottle of water when you are out and about.

What changed do you make to your skincare routine during the warmer months of the year?

  1. Excellent tips. How long do you keep moisturizers with sunscreen? I have a few that I wonder if I should toss.

    1. Thanks, Allison! I tend to go by the expiration date on the bottle/tube, or about 1 year after opening. I think that it depends a bit on the particular product, but my rule of thumb is to try to use them when they are closer to their prime so that I actually get th SPF protection.

  2. It just started getting warmer out and I'm changing to a few lighter skincare items. I'm trying to get used to not wearing foundation so I'm easing into that but that means my skin has to be at its best.

    1. I tend to use tinted moisturizers during the warmer weather, but often I skip that step altogether and just use a sunscreen as my last step. It definitely does mean taking better care of one's skin, though!

  3. Thank you! I wish all SPF products would write the expiration date on the product so it would be easier to remember!

    1. Me too, it is very frustrating that many fail to do the necessary step. Unless you use a sharpie and write the date of opening on your bottle or tube, there is no way of knowing.

  4. Great tips, especially the one about sleeping masks, skin gets dry in the summer too.

  5. I am bad about not drinking water and not replacing my SPF. I have decided to just replace my SPF's every few months, no matter how much is left in them.

    1. Drinking water is definitely a good one. Replacing your SPF every few months definitely assures greater product efficacy!
