While there is no question that one should take measures to protect and pamper their scalp and hair throughout the year, the cold weather really wreaks havoc on the skin and tresses. Because the shocking disparity between the cold outdoors and heated indoors really takes a toll on the hair and scalp, Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture's nourishing haircare line is a great choice for the cooler months of the year. These products are cruelty-free and do not contain silicone, artificial colors or fragrance, mineral oil, or alcohol.
Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Dream Come True Wonderful Scalp Exfoliator ($32.00 for 4 oz. from Sephora): This exfoliating scalp treatment removes product buildup, dead skin cells and flakes effectively and swiftly. Not only does it remove buildup, and rebalance the scalp, but also in doing so it makes hair and scalp masks and oils work more efficiently.

According to Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture,

Scalp health is vital for growing healthy, luxurious hair. Effectively remove buildup and flakes to soothe a dry scalp with this exfoliating scalp treatment. It is also ideal as a detoxifying treatment to cleanse, revitalize, and rebalance the scalp.

Directions: Prior to shampoo, massage directly on scalp using fingertips. Leave on for up to 12 minutes. Rinse well and follow with shampoo and conditioning regimen.

Key Ingredients and their attributes:
  • Shea Butter: Deeply moisturizes while conditioning hair and scalp.
  • Olive Oil: Penetrates hair shaft to deeply condition.

Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Scent and Shine Coconut Oil ($26.00 for 1.7 oz. from Madam C.J. Walker and Sephora): This is the perfect choice for anyone seeking a high quality hair oil that does not contain silicone, and I count myself among the people who prefer silicone-free hair oils that nourish the hair rather than cause a chemical build-up. This lightweight and fast absorbing oil nourishes the hair and leaves it soft, supple and shiny. It helps to define curls without weighing them down, and it has a delectable warm coconut and vanilla scent.

According to Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture,

Deeply nourish and protect curls with this fast-absorbing, lightweight treatment oil. Subtly scented with a medley of woods, coconut, and sweet vanilla notes to refresh hair in between washings, it helps maintain curl definition and healthy-looking shine.

Pure oil extracted from premium coconuts stays liquid at all temperatures for easy application. Mid-chain fatty acids penetrate strands to deeply nourish and support hair. Coconut oil has a naturally high affinity for hair protein so it helps fortify the building blocks of hair. As it delivers pure goodness, subtle fragrance covers date-to-date odors and refreshes waves and curls. A little goes a long way.

Good for: Straight, Wavy, Curly, Coiled and Tightly Coiled hair.

Key Ingredient Attributes: Coconut Oil: Adds luster, shine, and softness to the hair; helps prevent hair breakage and split ends.

Ingredients: Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides (Coconut Oil), Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).

Madam C.J. Walker Softening & Silkening Brassica Seed Oil ($26.00 for 1.7 oz. from Sephora): This lightweight hair oil smooths and hydrates hair, tames frizz and provides a brilliant shine for air dried and heat-styled hair. The aroma is a described as "spun sugar and red velvet cream," but I also detect a hint of Crème brûlée– either way, the scent is delectable!

According to Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture,

Brassica Seed Oil is a natural alternative to silicone—smoothing, silkening, and softening without weighing hair down or creating product buildup. Lusciously scented with notes of spun sugar and red velvet cream, it moisturizes and adds luster to heat-styled hair.

Key benefits:
- Hydrates and softens heat-styled hair
- Adds incredible shine and luster
- Refreshes hair with a sweet scent
-Can be used as a protectant when applied before heat styling.

Madam C.J. Walker Scent & Jamaican Black Castor ($26.00 for 1.7 oz. from Sephora): This is a thick and rich, ultra-nourishing hair oil that is best suited for curly, coiled and tightly coiled hair types. It is very concentrated– thus a little goes a long way. It can be used on wet or dry hair, but I prefer using it on damp hair to get it to absorb faster, and leave my curls in perfect glossy ringlets. It has a warm amber and musk aroma that is hypnotic and otherworldly, and it is such a pleasure to catch a hint of its lovely scent throughout the day.

According to Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture,

A nutrient-rich, ultra-restorative hair oil that hydrates dry curls and scalp, while refreshing with a hint of amber and warm musk.

Perfect for refreshing hair between washes, Jamaican Black Castor Oil is rich in ultra-moisturizing and restorative omega-9's for healthy-looking hair. Essential fatty acids and vitamins define curls and support natural, healthy hair growth. Scented with a blend of captivating amber and warm glimmers of musk, strands are left super-soft and lightly fragranced.

Key benefits:
- Intensely hydrates for defined curls
- Promotes healthy hair growth
- Enhances shine and subtly scents hair
-Use on eyebrows to promote hair growth.
-Add as an intensive moisture booster to stylers or treatments.
-Alternatively, incorporate into your pre-wash regimen for extra moisture.

Good for: Curly, Coiled and Tightly Coiled hair.

Directions: Use sparingly (a little goes a long way). Due to its rich, thickness, it will slowly pump out. Pump into hands and work through hair, focusing on scalp to refresh dry strands and add shine.

  • Jamaican Black Castor Oil: Rich in restorative Omega-9's that maximize moisture and promote healthy hair growth for defined and shiny curls.

  9. I've never tried a scalp exfoliator - I'm irrationally worried about my hair falling out along with the dead skin LOL. Is this one gritty or smooth?

    1. It's a really interesting product! My tube has gone missing!!!!! I used it last about a month ago, and do not recall any grit. I would gently massage it into my scalp and leave it in for about 15 minutes and then rinse it out. It definitely cleaned my scalp beautifully, and was really great to use right before using a deep conditioner/hair mask. I will keep looking to see if I can detect any grit.
