Travel Beauty Essentials | Overview and Review

Selecting the proper skincare products to take while traveling is always a challenge for me. I travel frequently, and I have a great tendency to overpack. Lately, I have been making every effort to edit down my skincare essentials for the face because I usually take too many things– most of which don't end up getting used. This creates unnecessary clutter in my travel bag, and it creates frustration when I have to dig through a huge bag overstuffed with superfluous items. My solution was to streamline my skincare, and I think that you will agree that my choices are sleek, boast exceptional quality, cover all of the bases, and are exceedingly user-friendly.
This list does not include body products or makeup because when I travel light I often just use the cosmetics bag in my purse to carry all of my makeup and a good and nourishing body lotion. Here, however, I did include haircare and dental care products. I generally bring my own shampoo and conditioner because my curly hair is quite often left feeling dry and stripped when I use many of the commercial shampoos on the market that I may encounter where I am staying.
1) Somme Institute Mobile Travel Kit ($85.00 from Space NK): This is an ingenious travel kit– not only is it filled with five of Somme Institutes most celebrated skincare products in TSA Compliant sizes, but the containers are refillable, and they are neatly tucked away in a wonderful sturdy acrylic travel case. 2) HydroPeptide Solar Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($44.00 for 1.7 oz. from Nordstrom. First reviewed here): I absolutely love this sunscreen, and while I have an SPF Lotion in by Somme Institute Kit I still like to bring this with me as well because it doubles as a magnificent primer.

As previously noted in my review, "One of the novel aspects of this sunscreen is its ability to self-adjust to the color of your skin assuring perfect coverage that evens out the complexion without adding color. The formula is moisturizing, yet non-greasy, and it is lightweight and fast absorbing. This physical sunscreen provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection-- but it leaves behind no white residue, and will not interfere with the application or wear of makeup. The finish is nearly matte, and it is formulated for all skin types."

Furthermore, while it boasts an oil-free non-comedogenic formula, it provides wonderful hydration and should work well for all skin types notwithstanding any allergies one may have to specific ingredients. HydroPeptide Solar Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 30 has a fruity scent, but it does dissipate rather quickly-- therefore it should not present a concern to those among you who are sensitive to facial products that aren't free of scent.

In addition to being a wonderfully effective sunscreen that is comfortable on the skin, and that has serious skincare ingredients with tangible benefits, it also doubles as a very effective makeup primer. Therefore, this multitasker is one fabulous sunscreen that has delighted me, and is definitely worth your consideration when you need to replace your facial sunscreen.

According to HydroPeptide,

This summer, prevent and treat skincare disasters with HydroPeptide. The peptide-packed combination of Solar Defense: Broad Spectrum SPF 30, Soothing Serum: Redness Repair and Relief and Face Lift: Advanced Ultra-Light Moisturizer will keep skin protected and have it glowing all summer long!

Beat the damaging effects if UVA & UVB rays to the punch with Solar Defense: Broad Spectrum SPF 30. This non-greasy physical sunscreen self-adjusts to the color of your skin tone to offer flawless coverage, while anti-aging elements hydrate, protect and help clarify the skin. A moisture-binding peptide rich in protein keeps skin balanced and shine-free by controlling oil and satisfying the skin’s exact moisture needs. Super-antioxidants including acai berry and green tea work to prevent future wrinkling and pigmentation, keeping skin looking young and fresh.

Formula Features:
  •  Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, physical blocking sunscreens, offer broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB damage without leaving a white, chalky appearance.
  • A Moisture-Binding Peptide rich in protein and derived from yeast extract reactivates epidermal lipids and allows for improved, long-lasting hydration. Significantly decreases the sebaceous secretion of oily skin, leaving a non-shiny appearance.
  • Self-adjusting sphere's perfectly blend to any skin tone, camouflaging mild hyperpigmentation and redness while offering a more even, flawless, matte finish.
  • Oil-free formula that doesn't leave a greasy feel. Aloe, niacin and sodium hyaluronate perfectly balance hydration.
  • Gluten free.

3) African Botanics Marula Cleansing Oil (30ml. from the African Wanderlust Travel and Gift Set $110.00. Reviewed here): This is an absolute game-changer in the realm of cleansing oils. After use my skin is left indescribably soft, silky smooth, supple, and balanced. It gently cleans my face without leaving behind any residue whatsoever, and it never strips the skin. It effortlessly lifts dead skin cells by gently exfoliating, but it never irritates the skin. Furthermore, African Botanics suggests that it, "maintains optimal skin oxygenation while overcoming environmental stress. Minimizes redness, reduces irritation and stimulates microcirculation." It must also be noted that the sensory and tactile experience is soothing to the spirit, while nourishing to the skin courtesy of the warm vanilla scent that is commingled with the other botanicals.

I have used this cleansing oil when I wear no makeup, when I wear normal makeup, and per Julia's suggestion I applied a full face of makeup to see how her cleansing oil would fare. The result: there is no task too big or too small for this mighty cleansing oil! I don't generally wear heavy makeup, but the African Botanics Pure Marula Cleansing Oil effortlessly removed every single trace, and left my skin scrumptiously clean, balanced, and soft.

Marula Pure Marula Cleansing Oil is noted for its ability to:
  • Dissolve impurities & makeup (including eye makeup)
  • Clarify, oxygenate, and soften the skin
  • Regenerate the skin
This lightweight oil is an antioxidant and omega-rich oil that was formulated to gently cleanse and purify even the most sensitive skin types while removing makeup, dead skin cells as well as pollution and other impurities. It is so gentle and effective that it neither dehydrates the skin, nor causes irritation. It is suitable for combination, sensitive and dry skin types.

Use: This lovely cleansing oil can be used in the morning and the evening, and doesn't require double cleansing. Warm between 2-4 pumps of the Pure Marula Cleansing Oil into your hands, and then massage it into your face, neck and décolleté. African Botanics suggests massaging it for 1 minute in a circular motion concentrating on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. After massaging, the skin add a few drops of warm water in order to emulsify the oil, and then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

To remove eye makeup: Pump a very small amount onto a moist cotton pad, and then gently hold it over the eyes for a few seconds. With a gentle sweeping motion you will see all of your makeup dissolve. Follow up with a clean water moistened cotton pad to remove the last bits of makeup residue. According to Julia, Pure Marula Cleansing Oil is even formulated to handle stubborn waterproof makeup! In fact, Julia herself uses it to remove her waterproof mascara by applying the oil with a water moistened moist cotton pad, then pressing it gently over her closed eye area for a few seconds, and then wiping it off slowly. Finally she repeats with a clean water moistened cotton pad to remove the last bits of cleansing oil and makeup.

How does this magical cleansing elixir work? How do the selected ingredients work their magic?

Marula Oil, which is indigenous to South Africa, is an antioxidant rich oil with high concentrations of Vitamin E and Omegas. Marula Oil is known to reduce redness, improve elasticity, improve firmness, and to mitigate transepidermal water loss.

Moringa Oil, another treasure from South Africa, gently cleanses the skin by lifting impurities without disturbing the acid mantle, skin's natural sebum layer, or by stripping the skin. Therefore, it effectively removes makeup and environmental pollutants without disturbing the skin. Moringa Oil also has an astringent quality that tones and balances the skin, helps to clear blemishes, and improves the appearance of enlarged pores.

Baobab Oil, which is rich in Omegas 3, 6 & 9, hydrates the skin and helps to regenerate skin cells.

Cape Chamomile, which is distilled from wild flowers that are harvested in the Fynbos region of South Africa, effectively reduces inflammation, skin irritation, and swelling.

AHA Fruit Acids from Bilberry, Lemon, Pink Grapefruit, and Sugar Cane serve to gently exfoliate the skin while reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, and by promoting firmness. Furthermore, these fruit acids aid in unclogging congested pores, and improving the overall appearance of the skin by creating a smoother more youthful texture.

It is a luxurious moisturizer that immediately plumps, hydrates and balances the skin. Skin is rendered velvety soft, supple, smooth, lifted and hydrated. Furthermore, skin is left with the highly sought after radiance that beauty oil enthusiasts seek out with such vigor!

According to African Botanics,

Unwash Bio-Cleansing Conditioner (Deluxe 2.5 oz. sample. Full size $36.00 for 13.5 oz.): I received a 2.5 oz. tube of this wonder-shampoo is a Glossybox, and I didn't pay much attention to it at first– what a mistake that was. This is one of those ultra-gentle two-in-one shampoo/conditioner that works in the same way as the WEN shampoos. It is very kind on colored, dry and curly hair, but I suspect that everyone would benefit from this non-stripping and moisturizing formula.

According to Unwash,

This innovative take on the popular “co-washing” trend offers a streamlined, chic way keep harsh detergents at bay, while improving manageability and infusing volume in one step.

  1. What an amazing list of goodies for travel! Since I often can't check my bag when traveling for business, I'm often left with squeezing in my liquids in the little one quart size plastic bag so I'm often looking for non-liquid products to take, like eye makeup remover pads instead of my usual liquid, lip hydrator that's "hard" rather than a gel in a tube, and powder foundation rather than liquid. But one thing I would love on your list is the adorable Violight Sonic travel toothbrush.
