Summer Skincare Tips from Dermatologist Dr. Jessica Weiser

PSA (Unaffiliated Links)

With summer  less than two weeks away, this is the time to think about protecting your skin. Therefore, I have sought out tips from an expert, and here is what Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Jessica Weiser, from New York Dermatology Group, suggests that we do to protect our skin this season:

1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! The sun is directly overhead and therefore most intense from 11am – 3pm.  Apply UVA/UVB protection with at least SPF 30 every 2 hours to the skin and lips for best protection. Use physical sunscreens such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to prevent UV damage and avoid chemical absorption into the skin. A teaspoon quantity should be used to cover the face and a shot glass quantity to cover the body. Make sure your sunscreen is not expired! Additionally, consider taking Lysine to reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

2. Use Cleansing oil to remove sunscreen and makeup: Follow this with a gentle wash to cleanse the skin. Make sure to gently exfoliate 2-3 times a week to prevent pores from clogging.

3. Soothe irritated skin with lightweight oils and moisturizers to allow skin to be protected and properly hydrated: Sweat can be irritating to skin. Try rosewater or rosehip oil, which are soothing and reduce skin inflammation.  Antioxidants are a helpful way to combat oxidative or free radical damage that skin incurs from the sun and environment.

4. Use A Retinol-Based Product Before Bedtime: This will help control oil gland production, keep pores small and tight, and continue the anti-aging process by stimulating collagen production. Be careful though because retinol can make the skin more sensitive to the sun!

5. Check for Ticks nightly if you Are in an Area Endemic to Deer Ticks and Lyme disease: If you remove the tick before it becomes swollen (or engorged) you can stop the transmission of Lyme disease and save yourself a long course of antibiotics, or even worse, the consequences of untreated Lyme disease
Use Caffeine-Based Body Moisturizers: If you don't have time for in office procedures, caffeine-based moisturizers can provide several hours of improved skin texture and smoothness to reduce appearance of cellulite and other skin surface irregularities.

6. Sandal Season FYI: Hydrate the soles of feet and heels with moisturizing creams daily before bed, ideally overnight with a pair of white cotton socks (only if you are not prone to fungal infection), and exfoliate soles and heels at least twice weekly. For especially dry heels or feet or if not responding to typical exfoliation and hydration, speak with your dermatologist to make sure you don't have a specific variant of athlete's foot that affects the soles of the feet known as moccasin type. If not athlete’s foot, over the counter ammonium lactate lotions can help break down moderate dead skin. For severe dry skin try prescription-strength urea cream, which helps break down dead skin cells and smoothe skin more intensively.

7. Use Chemical Exfoliants in the Evening: Apply products in the evening for tone control to prevent skin tone from becoming uneven. Examples include glycolic acid, lactic acid, kojic acid and Symwhite. These chemical exfoliants can increase sun sensitivity, so be sure to use sunscreen each day and wear a hat for best results.

  1. Hey Helen,

I'd thought I'd give you an update on my serums you recommended after I bought the Sisley oil. I took your advice and got the Verso facial serum and I love it. I just orderd the travel size day and night cream as well. After I commented I went skin care crazy and bought a ton of Kate Somerville who I've never used before. I got her age arrest serum, nourish facial must and clinical pads which are nice to alternate with my Zelens PHA pads that are AMAZING. I then got the OMOROVIZA deep cleansing mask, diamond facial peel and refining facial polisher all of which I love. I also ordered some Chantecaille skincare as I've never tried it. I got the fruit and flower acid mask, retinol intense moisturizer and the vital essence with Arbutrin serum. All great stuff so far. I did get more but reading this sounds like bragging and trust me my wallets not but since reading this blog and you've answered so many questions I wanted to let you know my skin has never looked better. Thank you again for all your recommendations. I'll be looking into the Organic pharmacy serums you told me about. I did get their carrot butter balm it's awesome. Have you tried that?

    1. Hi Melissa! Thank you for the update! You do not sound at all like you are bragging! What are the other things that you got? I'm so glad that you love the Sisley and Verso products!! Aren't they AMAZING?! You really seem to have discovered a great many must-haves!

Yes, I have The Organic Pharmacy Carrot Cleansing Balm! I need to review mine soon! I agree with you completely, it really is awesome! I suspect that you will really love their serums, I think their products are of extraordinary quality! <3

    2. I got a few milk cleansers since I've never tried them Chantecaille cleansing milk and Sunday Riley charisma creme, Omorovicza copper peel amazing. Colbert md intensify facial pads, Zelens z matrix travel size and his moisture renewal mask. The cult classic exfolikate from Kate Somerville and the pixi glow tonic. I've heard many great reviews on that. I also got the la mer treatment lotion that's awesome and the Chanel resynchronizing trio. Normally don't but their skincare but it has good ingredients and positive reviews so I'm just starting to try that now. The last thing is the Tata Harper nutrient complex and the ole henriksen vitamin c collagen boosting serum. I need serious help lol. But for so long it was just makeup and fresh skincare which I love still but now that I've done research I'm in the rabbit hole. Of course j haven't used all of it since I need to test them for 3-4 weeks but I'm so excited about my skincare routine lol. I did see barneys has a organic pharmacy trial set that has a good mix so that might be next.

    3. What a truly wonderful selection! If you need serious help, then I fear that I am way way beyond it! I have The Organic Pharmacy Travel Set that Barneys is now stocking! I will bump up my review so that you can decide if you really want to get it. I am really happy to have it! I am glad that you are talking this approach to testing out all of the products that you recently purchased. You really can only get a sense of how well that they will work for your skin doing it this way! I can't wait to hear what you end up really loving! Have a lovely weekend! <3

    4. Honestly Helen if it wasn't for all your honest reviews I would've had a lot harder time dissecting the world of skincare. You made it so easy on me and I thank you. I haven't gotten anything I don't love so I know how much time you put in and the fact you remember so many of your readers means the world to me. I can't wait for your thoughts on the travel set from the organic pharmacy.

    5. Also have you heard about the new Sunday Riley cleansing balm that's coming out in September I can't wait

    6. Melissa, You just made my day for saying such a kind thing! I would never bother to do any of this if I didn't genuinely care about engaging with, and getting to know, the people who take time out of their busy lives to come here to interact with me and with each other! I'm so glad that my reviews have been that helpful to you! I would certainly hate for you to waste money on products that aren't a good fit for you, and if my reviews are able to steer you away from bad fits and toward good ones, then I feel very fulfilled. Clearly I am completely obsessed with skincare products, but it means a great deal to me to give honest assessments of the things that I test out so that much of the guesswork can be taken out of the equation for you. Plus, when you are spending hard-earned money on products with a luxury price-tag it's nice to know where to save your money and where to spend it! The Organic Pharmacy Travel set is a really lovely way to test out the line since the full sizes are so pricey. I will get working on that review for you. I have also been using the Colbert MD. Stimulate The Serum and his Uplift Eye Serum, and have to say that I am quite taken with both– as well as his eye cream. I need to use them longer before writing up a review, but so far I am very happy!

I hadn't heard about the new cleansing balm– what an interesting product type to add to the line. Speaking of which I really need to review the Carrot Balm from The Organic Pharmacy before I finish it up! It's such a great product! I hope that you have a really lovely weekend, Melissa! :-)

    7. Aww Helen you made my day your so awesome. I also have the Colbert MD serum and I really like it. Smooth absorbs easily and very soft on the skin. I have tried a sample of his eye serum but I am using the start over by Sunday Riley which has helped my dark circles. I think I'll buy the Zelens eye cream next but I did try the Kiehls avocado and that's a good affordable alternative for adding moisture

    8. THat is so kind of you to say, Melissa! I agree about the Colbert MD Serum! HIs eye serum is amazing, and so is the one from Verso which does the same thing as Start Over. I actually seem to be getting better results with Verso than I did with Start Over. It is treating dark circles, occasional purines and exfoliates dead skin cells (thanks to the retinol). I am curious about the Zelens eye cream as well. I still need to try the Kiehls Avocado eye cream (I need to check to see whether or not I have a sample somewhere).

    9. Ok I'll try the verso next is it hydrating?

    10. I find it hydrating, but if you are looking for a richer cream, then this would be great underneath it as a hydrating serum. It is definitely enough moisture on its own for me, though. I will use it for a little while longer and then get a review up so that you can decide if it seems like a good fir for you before you contemplate spending the money! :-)

  2. Ugh, I really hate having to reapply sunscreen over make-up :-( If only they'd invent a dry spray that you can just spray on every two hours!

    1. Reapplication is always the hardest part to do! There is actually a really brilliant spray sunscreen from Goldfaden MD called Sun Visor Ultra Light Oil Free SPF 30 Mist that is easy to apply, and it does not interfere with makeup!

I absolutely love this stuff, Melissa!
