If you color your hair, then you know that preserving your color requires diligent at-home care to make it last longer. I color my hair periodically, but mostly at the end of the summer after the sun has significantly lightened the color of my hair from dark brown to reddened brown. Add to this that I have naturally curly hair, and the need to nourish my tresses is even more pronounced. For me, the game-changing haircare line has unequivocally been the SHU UEMURA Art of Hair Color Lustre line. Without exaggeration and without reservation, I have to confess that I have never imagined a more effective, gentle, moisturizing and magically scented line. Those among you who are already well aware of the merits of the SHU UEMURA haircare line know firsthand that the quality and efficacy are unparalleled.

According to SHU UEMURA ART OF HAIR,

In a nod to the art world, SHU UEMURA ART OF HAIR introduces a new innovation to preserve color vitality – the new COLOR LUSTRE BRILLIANT GLAZE line. True to the brand’s DNA, COLOR LUSTRE draws inspiration from painting and art restoration, applying a unique approach to hair care and color protection.

SHU UEMURA ART OF HAIR looked at how artists meticulously care for their masterpieces, often restoring a canvas by employing a varnish of oils to protect the painting against its main attacker – water.  Similar to a canvas, hair has a natural protective varnish which creates a hydrophobic barrier along the fiber. However, the hair coloring process and regular washing break down this protective layer, leaving the fiber rough and causing color to fade, resulting in damaged, dry and dull strands.

With this in mind, COLOR LUSTRE is the first color-treated line specifically formulated with a powerful refining lipid that restores the hair’s natural protective varnish to limit color washout, leaving it vibrant and polished with maximum shine.

SHU UEMURA Art of Hair The New Lustre Collection is a new range of products that features of a sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner, treatment masque and leave-in heat protecting milk to offer an all-encompassing approach to at-home color protection.

Extracted from the Musk Rose Tree since the 16th century for its inherent healing properties, Musk Rose Oil is rich in fatty acids that deeply nourish the hair fiber.

Details of Key Scents:
  • FRAGRANCE: Rose of Japan
  • TOP NOTES: Mandarin, Grapefruit, Black-Currant, Cardamon Essence
  • HEART NOTES: Rose, Freesia, Violet
  • BASE NOTES: Sandalwood, Musk, Vanilla
Key Ingredients: Drawing from the brand’s oil expertise, the line is infused with refining lipid (18 MEA) to polish the hair, and reveal true vibrancy and color radiance. Additionally, COLOR LUSTRE is formulated with rare and precious ingredients to prevent oxidation and illuminate hair:
  • MUSK ROSE OIL: Musk Rose Oil is rich in fatty acids and Vitamin A that deeply nourish the hair fiber.
  • NEW GOJI BERRY EXTRACT: Goji Berries are renowned in Asia as the most concentrated natural source of anti-oxidants. They are so delicate they they must be harvested carefully by shaking them free from the trees so as not to crush them. Goji Berry Exract helps protect the hair from oxidation and color fade.

Color Lustre Sulfate-Free Brilliant Glaze Shampoo ($48.00 for 10 oz. from SHU UEMURA Art of Hair and Amazon): This sulfate-free formula provides delicate cleansing of color-treated hair, while giving it a polished touch.

Color Lustre Sulfate-Free Brilliant Glaze Shampoo is remarkably gentle and moisturizing, and it is perfect for my curly hair. So perfect, in fact, that it is my shampoo of choice even when my hair isn't colored. It effectively and gently cleans my hair without doesn't stripping it, and that is a rare combination.
Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Conditioner ($58.00 for 8 oz. from SHU UEMURA Art of Hair and Amazon): Provides lightweight conditioning with a glazed touch and polished shine from mid-lengths to ends while preserving the hair color. Formulated for daily use. A nourishing conditioner that adds vibrancy to hair color for a polished touch from roots to ends.

Lightweight conditioners seldom deliver tremendous moisture and shine without weighing down hair, but this magical conditioner is like a high quality moisturizing serum. My hair is left soft, shiny and moisturized. It is an absolutely amazing conditioner.
Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Treatment Masque ($68.00 for 6 oz. from SHU UEMURA Art of Hair and Amazon).

According to SHU UEMURA,

A treatment masque for added nourishment, shine and color preservation that can be used daily in place of a conditioner on thick hair, or as a weekly treatment for fine hair.

This rich cream masque instantly restores the hair’s protective varnish to preserve hair color and deeply nourishes the hair fiber. Provides a glazed touch from mid-lengths to ends with a vibrant, polished shine. Use as a weekly treatment on finer hair. On thicker hair, use daily in place of a conditioner.

While one only needs to leave this treatment masque on for 2-3 minutes, I prefer to leave it on a bit longer. It deeply nourishes and moisturizes my hair, and leaves it soft, shiny and silky smooth! It's absolutely amazing, and I will promptly buy another jar just as soon as I finish this one.

Suggested Use: After shampooing, massage into damp hair. After 2-3 minutes, rinse out. For finer hair, use as weekly treatment. For thicker hair, use daily in replace of conditioner.
Color Lustre Brilliant Glaze Thermo-Milk ($38.00 for 5 oz. from SHU UEMURA Art of Hair and Amazon):

According to SHU UEMURA,

Highly concentrated in Refining Lipids, this lightweight, nourishing leave-in milk for color-treated hair provides guilt-free heat styling and all-day shape memory while protecting from color fade. Imparts a vibrant, glazed shine and a polished touch.

This lightweight leave-in milk is concentrated in refining lipid. It instantly provides a glazed finish for long-lasting heat styling, shape memory and brilliant shine.

Whether you are styling your hair, or letting it dry naturally, there is no better leave in treatment to make hair manageable and leave it protected. I apply a small amount from roots to tips and my hair brushes or combs out tangle free. My hair is left soft, shiny, moisturized and manageable.

Suggested Use:

1. On towel-dried hair, apply a quarter-size amount evenly from mid-lengths to ends.
2. Comb through for even distribution.
3. Section hair and blow dry section by section from roots to ends.
4. Use additional heat tools as required by the desired style.
5. Do not rinse.

  2. This sounds fantastic! I've always wanted to try a reddened brown hair color... my stylist said if we did it I couldn't be as highlighted blonde like I am now... and that scares me LMAO I know it's only hair... but .... gah.

  7. The whole range sounds great, but the treatment masque sounds perfect. Keeping colour has become my main concern with hair care and some brands just don't do it well (even when they claim they can.)

    1. That's such a bummer, Jamie! :-( I'm definitely obsessed with this line!

    2. Jamie—if you see this, I’d like to know how you discovered you were allergic to these products. My stylist used them on me and gave me samples that I’ve since used twice in the week since my appointment. Now the back of my neck and both ears are itchy and bumpy. This is the only new substance I’ve been in contact with so I suspect I’m allergic as well. Thanks.

    3. Hi Monica, I am not sure if Jamie set her comments to see updated responses, but hopefully she will! I am so sorry to hear that you also had an allergic reaction to these products. It would be wonderful if you were able to isolate the ingredients, if at all possible, so that you can keep clear of any products that use those ingredients!
