TATCHA, an amazing young company rooted deeply in history, has stopped even the most seasoned  beauty aficionados in their tracks with their elegant and highly effective products. Victoria Tsai, the founder and CEO of TATCHA, performs miracles in her ability to capture the beauty secrets of the geisha, but does so by utilizing their philosophical system coupled with modern technology and science. The end result? The most extraordinary products that encourage you to slow down and savor the act of engaging in the most decadent experiential skincare ritual.
Among the newest additions to the this gem-filled line is TATCHA's Indigo Collection for the hands and body. The Soothing Hand Cream, Soothing Silk Body Butter and Soothing Renewal Treatment are profoundly moisturizing treatment creams that offer even the driest skins great relief.

According to TATCHA,

When entertaining, a geisha’s hands are the only parts of her body visible from her decorative kimono. She gives her hands the same attention as her face; her hands and body are remarkably smooth and supple due to silk-infused hand cream and whipped body butter to complement her complexion. TATCHA’s body butter and hand cream feature soothing and anti-inflammatory Indigo to comfort and nourish skin, restoring it to youthful beauty.
Left to Right: Indigo Soothing Silk Body Butter & Soothing Silk Hand Cream

TATCHA'S Indigo Soothing Silk Body Butter is a rich, fast absorbing and non-greasy body cream that leaves behind the most lusciously supple, soft and deeply moisturized skin imaginable. The anti-inflammatory rich formula soothes redness and skin irritation swiftly, effortlessly and with great efficacy. The subtle warm clean scent is utterly intoxicating, but it fades quickly and will not to interfere with any fragrances that one might wear. I am madly in love with this beautifully conceived and executed body butter and would love to luxuriate in a bathtub filled with this extraordinarily soothing cream!

According to TATCHA,

Rich in anti-inflammatory Indigo, liquid Silk and Squalane, TATCHA's INDIGO Soothing Silk Body Butter softens and soothes irritated skin.

The stems, leaves and petals of the Indigo plant are steeped in water and fermented to make a concentrated botanical extract. Tryptanthrin and indirubin actives help reduce irritation and promote skin's natural healing abilities. The natural blue hue disappears upon application. Due to the natural botanical extract, the shade of Indigo may vary; the efficacy of the formulation remains the same.

Who it's for: Any skin type, especially sensitive, inflamed or irritated skin consistent with symptoms of dermatitis, eczema and rosacea.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Squalane (Olive Origin), Cyclopentasiloxane, Propanediol, Diisostearyl Malate, Myristyl Myristate, Xylitol, Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate, Behenyl Alcohol, Fragrance (Natural), Sorbitan Tristearate, Beheneth-20, Sodium Acrylate/Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Dimethylacrylamide Crosspolymer, Microcrystalline Wax, Dimethicone, Ethylhexylglycerin, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Germ Oil, Inositol (Rice Extract), Sodium Polyacrylate Starch, Calcium Carbonate,  Polyglyceryl-10 Myristate, Disodium Edta, Sodium Dilauramidoglutamide Lysine, Sericin (Silk Extract), Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate (Licorice Extract), Hydrogenated Lecithin (Soy Origin), Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Polygonum Tinctorum (Japanese Indigo Extract) Leaf/Stem Extract, Alcohol, Algae Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, and Phenoxyethanol.
TATCHA'S Soothing Silk Hand Cream is a revelation for dry hands, and unlike anything else that I have tried. It is ultra-lightweight yet very rich and moisturizing, but it sinks in quickly leaving behind no greasy film. Hands are left soft, supple and left deeply moisturized. The anti-inflammatory rich formula makes short work of soothing redness and irritation, and returning skin to a balanced and hydrated state.  Recently I experienced redness and irritation, source unknown, on my left hand-- and thought that it was the perfect time to really test this hand cream to see if it could heal my irritated skin. I suspected that it would work, but I made the assumption that it would take a few days to work its magic. What was to follow came as a big surprise-- upon application my skin immediately stopped itching, and within about 10 minutes my hand was no longer red. I'm absolutely astounded by the results. In my estimation this is a must-have hand cream, period!

  1. Since my little Tatcha haul earlier this month I've been checking back more and am really pleased to see more travel sized selections. That will make it so much easier to continue trying new things! I'm thrilled with the items I ordered already and I've got to say that everyone is right- the products are phenomenal! I received some Indigo samples with my order and decided to break one out today as I found myself covered in bug bites (long story, was outdoors painting furniture) and thought hey why not? I'm happy to say it's been working rather well. And it's nice to find a little itch relief that doesn't smell like Bactine. :P
I'll definitely be picking up a hand cream at some point!

    1. Hi Rach! I agree it was a brilliant move to make all of the travel sizes! I'm so glad that you are really pleased with everything that you got from TATCHA-- I suspect that you will love the other things that you end up trying as well. The Indigo Collection is just amazing-- I couldn't believe that the itching on my hand went away immediately after I applied the hand cream, and that it was no longer at all red after 10 minutes is astounding to me. I was actually about to put on some cortisone cream, but decided to try this instead, and I am so glad that I did. I'm not at all surprised that you are finding that it worked well for you after your bug bites as well-- yes, much better than Bactine! I have yet to try their Camellia Beauty oil (other than at the counter and during a facial), but that is definitely at the top of my list. Have a lovely weekend! :-)

  2. well here i am being an ingredient nerd. i had a friend years ago in the bay area who did a lot of weaving and custom dying. when using indigo, she had to maintain very safe handling procedures so that she never touched it due to it's toxicity. so, seeing skin care product baffled me. i looked it up and it is definitely a toxic material.

now, i am curious as to how the indigo in these products are treated and formulated. just thought i'd pass on what i do know. other than these products, i have heard very good things about other products made by tatcha. this one is a head scratcher for me though.

    1. Well, I think this certainly warrants more extensive research. Thanks for passing it on.

  3. Relax ladies :-). Tatcha uses Polygonum Tinctorium (Japanese Indigo) which is actually an edible plant! The fermented botanical extract from the plant has been used safely for hundreds of years as a skin healing and soothing agent. Polygonum Tinctoriam contains tryptanthrin, an anti-inflammatory compound that helps soothe irritated skin, and indirubin, which inhibits irritation-causing proteins while also strengthening skin’s barrier function. A study published in the March 2012 Archives of Dermatology showed dramatic improvement when patients with severe psoriasis were treated with a topical indigo extract and, of course, Tatcha has clinical trials to support their product's efficacy and safety. Polygonum Tinctorium extract has been used safely for hundreds of years as an anti-inflammatory and wound healing substance. Bottom line: Regulatory agencies in both the US and Japan consider public safety to be paramount and would not permit the sale of toxic skin care products. Google Polygonum Tinctorium and sleep easy! It's perfectly safe :-)

    1. HI Eileen,

I hope that you have been enjoying the beautiful summer weather here! Thank you for your insightful response. I was never concerned that TATCHA was using a dangerous ingredient, but did think that it was worth reading the article cited to say what it said. I did read it, and did do a bit more research since that article was written in 1988, and I came to the same conclusion that you have presented. There is no question that it is a powerful anti-inflammatory since I was able to test its efficacy first hand. I had a red-irritated itchy spot on my hand that may have been a bug bite or a reaction to something else in my garden, and I applied the Indigo Hand Cream and it quite literally made it stop itching immediately and the redness was completely gone in less than 10 minutes. Additionally it left hand hand so soft and supple. It did a better job than Cortisone Cream does, and I've never experienced something like that from a hand cream! :-)

  4. thank you, eileen, i appreciate the update. i know that there are many varieties of indigo and that methods of processing could make a significant difference as well. this is the information i wanted to see. i would be delighted to check out the article in the 'archives of dermatology'. yes, i am that much of an ingredient nerd.

i suffer from rosacea which has some known neurological relationships with psoriasis, so this is actually very interesting to me thank you again.

    1. Hi Faux,

The hand cream and body butter can be used by anyone who wants a soothing product, but there is also a concentrated balm that was designed specifically for people who have inflammatory skin conditions. I am not offering medical advice, but am going to share my experience with the concentrate. I have well controlled, mild rosacea and have been very impressed with how well the product has helped calm my skin and quell the little bumps I occasionally get on my cheeks. Whenever my skin starts to act up, I apply the balm at night and the next morning the irritation is dramatically reduced and in some cases completely gone. It just depends on how bad the flareup was to begin with. The concentrated balm is expensive but, unlike the hand cream and body butter, it is not the kind of product you use every day and so the .5 oz size actually lasts a long time. As for the hand cream and body butter, they are reasonably priced and I use those with wild abandon! :-).

I think Tatcha is very smart to offer so many travel sizes of their products. It makes trying a product very reasonable and they don't charge you a premium for buying a travel size the way some brands do. Tatcha is also extremely generous when it comes to samples and special promotional gifts. If you go to Barney's you can get samples of the Indigo Collection. If you shop on line, you can select three free samples. Whether it's dishpan hands or dermatitis, the Indigo Collection is well worth investigating.

  5. ok, Eileen, now you have got my interest! my rosacea is fairly well controlled, but i do have some permanent redness and it is time for another IPL series. i live hundreds of miles from the nearest Barney's. would you perchance have another suggestion for a way to obtain samples?

Helen knows that i am working on setting up my own blog at the moment which will specifically target folks with sensitive skin and/or rosacea. i have put an enormous amount of research into this to find solutions for myself and others and about to try spreading it to the world. i would love to be able to add some product recommendations to my growing list.

    1. Hi Cheryl,

Eileen is definitely amazingly well informed and knowledgable! I think that she's talking about getting the samples when placing an order through TATCHA directly. Their customer service is legendary, and everyone who works there really understands their products. It's even more affordable since TATCHA now offers so many travel sized products. :-)

  6. Hi Faux,

Yes, you do have to buy something from Tatcha to get the three samples. Perhaps you or someone you know would want to order something (perhaps a small travel size hand cream $8 or body butter $12)) and then you could get samples of the three Indigo products. Also, sign up for Tatcha's email as they have fantastic promotional gifts throughout the year. By the way, shipping is free in the US and you receive your products within 2-3 days. Awesome service.
