Feline Friday

I have what is arguably the ugliest kitty condo (actually two side-by-side) in my at-home office. I cringe each time I look at this monolithic monstrosity-- not only because it is inherently ugly, but because my savage feline friends continually modify its appearance by breaking it one bit at a time. You will note that the little landing upon which Maximus is lounging is now tethered to a bracket on the wall because the savages have nearly broken that perch as well. I should also mention that said bracket supports one end of a 7 foot long shelf that I placed over the 6 foot span French doors so that the savages could have a high perch from which to survey their kingdom. Yet, I can't get rid of this piece of feline furniture because it is so beloved by my furry friends. It is placed in front of the French doors that lead to the backyard, and the beasts attentively watch the ravens and squirrels as they routinely hold court on the back patio in order to taunt them. Aside from my desire to generally keep these babies happy my motivation for keeping this massive kitty meeting hall is to make my desk a less desirable piece of real estate because in the war of the wills I tend not to be the victor, in part because I am clearly outnumbered.
You will recall this photo of Oliver to illustrate my point. His eyes are dilated and his feet are poised on my laptop, and there need be little doubt that he's willing to do anything necessary to remain precisely where he is. Despite the fact that I have little chance of winning this particular battle-- that ugly condo does allow me to sneak in moments of unobstructed work space, and for this I am eternally grateful.

  1. Aww kitties! I only have a very small tree that they have been slowly demolishing as well. Definitely want a bigger one when we get our own house ;)

    1. They do really love to destroy them, don't they?! It seems the more worn and unsightly that they become the more that they love them! The big ones are so huge, cumbersome and ugly-- but they really do serve such an important purpose! You might have to get your own house to accommodate your feline family members!!!!!! Have a lovely weekend, Sunny! :)

    2. maybe there's too much cat testosterone in the room? i only had one prince in my kingdom, oz, and he rarely savaged his cat tree. sadly, he preferred to take his aggression out on the corners of my books :(

    3. Well, there is no question that the male kitties who tend to congregate on the tree are all a little crazy at times! I think that they are also more prone to rather wild behavior because of their particular breeds. Oliver, Jasper, and Maximus in particular periodically reveal their Jungle Cat roots! Zeus, on the other hand, is just nuts LOL!

    4. Your, poor books, Chia-YI! Oz sounds like he was a lovely prince in your kingdom! :-)

  2. Yet the monolithic construction supports the most beautiful bouquet of felines. You have such a wonderful family. It makes me happy every time you post pictures of your furry ones.
I imagine that, like sphinxes, they protect your working temple (and disturb it too! I know).
Have a wonderful weekend darling gorgeous and no news here yet. The waiting is destroying my hope :(

    1. It does, indeed! I'm so glad that these posts make you so happy!!!! They do both protect and destroy my working temple-- and it is the latter that keeps this monolithic monstrosity right where it is!

Don't lose hope!! I was driving to campus thinking about your long wait, and hoping so more that you would receive word soon. My fingers remain crossed,, and my hope high. You know how slowly academia can work at times given the sheer amount of administrative red tape required to fulfill even the smallest of tasks. Have a wonderful weekend, and do something fun or relaxing to take your mind off of the post-doc! xoxox
