TATCHA Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder Review

Purchased by me & Affiliate Link

According to TATCHA, Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder is "a A water-activated enzyme powder of rice bran, papaya + HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex. Reveals skin's natural gleam." It "exfoliates without harsh abrasives for effortless baby-soft skin" and was "created with conditioning pearl extract for normal skin."

A creamy, water-activated enzyme exfoliant effortlessly releases debris from the skin, leaving it polished and baby soft in an instant.Contains Japanese rice bran, skin-conditioning pearl and HADASEI-3 Bioactive Complex, a proprietary blend of rice bran, green tea and red algae extract. Formulated without mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, PEGs, PPGs, urea, DEA, TEA or phthalates. Ideal for all skin types.
I'm just so incredibly impressed by TATCHA in general, and really believe that they make some of the very finest skincare products on the market. TATCHA Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder is a very effective, yet a remarkably gentle, exfoliating cleanser. I really enjoy the metamorphosis from powder to paste, and the routine itself is immensely pleasurable. There is just enough grit to the texture of this refined and silky paste to loosen and remove all debris and dirt.
This is actually far more than you need to wash your face, but I wanted for you to have a good look at it before it transformed into a paste. It is quite concentrated- therefore you only need to use about 1/4 of the amount that you see above.
TATCHA offers three different versions of this fantastic powder cleanser:

Classic- is formulated for normal to combination skin. "Created with conditioning pearl extract for normal skin." This is gentle enough that I suspect that it will work well for most skin types.
Gentle- is formulated for sensitive skin. "Made with licorice root extract to help soothe sensitive skin. Functions as a 2-in-1 cleanser for those not wearing makeup."
Deep- is formulated for oily skin. "Made with dokudami to help soothe active skin and reduce the appearance of blemishes."
I chose the Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder because I have combination skin, and it definitely is a very good fit for my skin type. Despite the fact that this cleanser exfoliates the skin from the fine gritty bits, it also depends on the enzymes to dissolve dead skin cells as well. It is a very effective exfoliant, but truly is gentle enough to be used on a daily basis. I have never used it more than once a day because I tend to prefer to use the Tatcha One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil at night to remove all of my makeup. That said, I have numerous cleansers in rotation, and I choose which one to use based on the needs of my skin and my mood.

I cannot believe just how soft and smooth that this leaves my skin- and when I say soft I mean baby-bottom soft. I also found that leaving the paste on your face for a few minutes, as you would with a mask, renders even better results. I have found that doing so results in clean fresh skin that one experiences after getting a facial. This is such a magical powder!

Actives: Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran, Papain (Papaya Extract), Algae Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Hydrolyzed Conchiolin Protein (Pearl).

Formulated without: Mineral Oil, Synthetic Colors, Synthetic Fragrances, Sulfate Detergents, Parabens, PEGs, PPGs, Urea, DEA, TEA or Phthalates.

Non-irritating. Non-sensitizing. Dermatologist tested.
Overall assessment: Truly amazing cleanser. While it is quite expensive, this jar will last a good long time. I would suggest trying to get a sample to try each version, if at all possible. I do think that you will be quite impressed by the quality. I will definitely repurchase this when I finish my jar, but it will be a long time before I need to. Now I really want to try their new Camellia Beauty Oil and their new Camellia Nourishing Lip Balm-- you know that I have a weakness for facial oils and lip balms- so these are both on my list of things to try!

  1. I am dying to try the classic enzyme powder, but have been waiting to finish up my AmorePacific one before getting the Tatcha. I just can not get to the bottom of my AP bottle, even though I use it 3-4x a week and have had it for close to a year! :(

    1. It's a true thing of Beauty, Bellyhead! I haven't tried the one from AmorePacific-- it sounds as though it has lasted a long long time! You will probably find that the one from TATCHA will last a long time as well, but that is a really good thing! Swing by your local Barneys during your lunch break and get a few sample packets-- I'm quite sure that you will be thoroughly smitten!!! :-)

  2. I use the gentle version of this as my morning cleanser. It gently removes the surface debris that builds up overnight without stripping my skin. It leaves it baby soft and ready for my facial serums. I should mention that I will be 69 in a few weeks, have dry skin, and because I use prescription strength retinoic acid in an emollient base at night, my skin is sensitive. Despite all that :-P the gentle version of this effective powder does not irritate my skin in the least. I love it. Tatcha cleansing oil at night and the gentle enzyme powder in the morning is a perfect combination for my aging complexion.

    1. Having actually met you in person, I can say that your skin is gorgeous-- it neither reflects your chronological age, nor that you have skin!! Have you been happy using prescription Retin A? I have been thinking about asking my doctor to write me a prescription in order to compare it to the over-the-counter varieties that I have been using.

I agree that the Tatcha Oil at night in conjunction with their Enzyme Powder in the morning is a perfect combination! Do you use any of their their products with regularity?

    2. Thank you for the kind compliment. I've been using a prescription retinoic acid for 19 years now. My dermatologist has several different versions in two different strengths and prescribes the one that is best suited to an individual's skin condition and tolerance. I love the stuff. I really think the product from my dermatologist, a soothing and nurturing moisturizer, and SPF of 50 come rain or shine is what has kept my skin in good condition. I don't bother with OTC retinol products. If your skin can tolerate the real deal, go for it! There's just no comparison between the two. The only negative is that it will make your skin more sensitive and reactive.

    3. You are so welcome, Eileen! You are a stunning beauty and your skin is just gorgeous and radiant. I noticed in my last comment that is said, "...nor that you have skin!!" I meant "dry skin"-- and it is rather odd because I remember typing "dry."

Thank you for your assessment of prescription Retin A vs the OTC varieties. My skin has responded very well to the various OTC products that I have tried, but I think that I would prefer using the prescription strength for greater efficacy. My skin is quirky in that it is sometimes sensitive and reactive to things, but more often than not it is quite tolerant to most of the products that I try. THank you again-- I am going to ask my doctor to write me a prescription for a lower percentage Retin A to start out with.

  3. I love rice-powder based products - I've used one by Dermalogica, which is a fave. Thanks for the post :)

  5. I received samples of all three powder varieties, and Classic was my favorite one. I love how gently it exfoliates the skin without damaging it :)

    1. Hi Anastasia, Same is true for me. The other two are fantastic, but the Classic is bar far best suited to my combination skin. It does clean and exfoliate so gently, and it leaves skin so incredibly soft. I am obsessed with this stuff!!!!

  6. Have you tried any other rice enzyme powders? I'd really love to try this, but I know I couldn't maintain it on my student budget and am looking into alternatives to use with their oil cleanser.

    1. Hi Shrilaraune, This is the only enzyme powder of this sort that I have tried. I completely understand the high expense and the incompatibility with a student budget. I wish that I could weigh in on less expensive products. Does anyone else have any suggestions for something that is like TATCHA's powder at a more budget friendly price?

  7. I have this powder and started using it recently. I was so excited for my son to try it when we were all away for a family wedding this weekend. He previously had acne bad enough to use Accutane as a teen so I thought he would love this and the smoothing of his skin (which I felt in one use). He did think his skin was smooth, but his comment was "Of course it's smoother. The enzyme fills in your pores." I was more thinking that it exfoliated the roughness away, but he has a science/engineering background so perhaps his assessment is more correct. At any rate, I still love it but I hope he will love the jar I already purchased for him for his Christmas stocking. Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

    1. It's a really lovely cleanser, indeed. I felt the skin smoothing and softening after as single use as well! The enzymes dissolve dead skin cells like a little Pac-Man. They also help release the dirt and debris that clog the pores. The skin smoothing effects are a result of the enzymes coupled with the mild friction from the powder turned paste. I have never heard of the enzymes filling the pores before. I have discussed this cleanser with my friend who is the leading aesthetician for TATCHA, and she never included filling the pores as among the attributes of this cleanser. Well, if your son doesn't love it-- then I'm sure it will get good plenty of love from you! :-)
