DermOrganic Argan Oil Infused Haircare- Part I: Cleansing, Conditioning &Treatment Product Reviews

DermOrganic Argan Oil Hair Treatments is a fantastic company that offers beautiful Argan Oil infused haircare products that are sure to wow you from the moment that you first try them. I am a huge fan of Argan Oil, and have been using it in my hair for years, but I am now delighted to have found a line that uses it in all of their products. This line will work well for all hair types, but as a girl with naturally curly hair I have to say that it is a breath of fresh air to find a line that is so sensitive to the needs of hair like mine. In using all of their products I have noticed that my hair is soft and silky, my curls are nicely formed, I have no fly-aways or frizz, and it detangles my hair without any trouble whatsoever. What's not to love?!

According to DermOrganic, "we believe the ingredients we don’t use are just as important as the ones we do."

Benefits:
DermOrganic® products are all vegan.
DermOrganic® products made without animal by-products and are never tested on animals.
DermOrganic® products contain no sulfates, glycols, DEA, MEA, dyes or food coloring
DermOrganic® products are Gluten-free
DermOrganic® products contain no artificial preservatives. Paraben-free
DermOrganic® products are made without salt, sodium chloride or other artificial thickeners

According to the company, "DermOrganic Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1996 with a goal to provide safe, top-performing products to the international community of hair and skin professionals.
While the average person may use hair and skin products once a day, professional cosmetologists are exposed to those ingredients dozens of times a day for an entire career." It is therefore part of their mission to utilize ingredients that they "believe to be safe and effective, developing superior performing products that contain far fewer ingredients than are found in standard personal care formulations."

They understand that their customers are very "concerned about what they put on their hair and skin, or who are prone to negative reactions from standard hair and skin care ingredients," and their products are sure to please people who are looking for high quality haircare products filled with so many high quality ingredients.

Since I am reviewing so many of their products, I decided to divide my review into two parts: I) Cleansing, Conditioning & Treatment Products, and II) Styling Products (review forthcoming).

I had initially thought about reviewing each of the cleansing, conditioning and treatment products individually in isolation, but the more that I thought about this the more I decided against it. While this review clearly treats the products individually, I wanted to present them within the larger context of the line because while I have used the products individually and loved them- I was even more taken by how well they worked in concert. My hair looks stunningly soft with lovely glossy curls, and is hydrated and silky smooth. For those of you with naturally straight hair you are among the lucky ones blessed with the ability to achieve this rather easily, at least comparatively. Those of us with naturally curly hair must wage a daily battle to tame our unruly tresses, and this line has taken the battle out of my daily hair routine.

Below you will find a description, and my assessment of each of the five products being reviewed in this article, but I must preface the post to contextualize my results through a detailed description of my use. *After I shampoo my hair with the Daily Conditioning Shampoo I follow with the Daily Hydrating Conditioner (I leave it in for about 5 minutes) about 5 days a week. The remaining two days a week I replace the Daily Hydrating Conditioner with the Intensive Hair Repair Masque. When I have time I leave the Intensive Hair Repair Masque in for a couple of hours, but when I am short on time I leave it in for about 5 minutes (while in the shower). I then always follow my cleansing and conditioning by applying the Leave-In Treatment roots to tips, and then follow it by spraying the Leave-In Spray Treatment to my hair which gives it a glossy shine and eliminates frizz and fuzz. The end result is gorgeous deeply conditioned silky hair that is never weighed down, but that has silky soft gorgeous curls.

* I shampoo my hair daily- though periodically I skip a day since it is suggested that people with curly hair should avoid daily shampooing. The Daily Conditioning Shampoo is so hydrating that I really can shampoo my hair daily without the fear of drying it out.

I) Cleansing, Conditioning & Treatment Products:
1) Daily Conditioning Shampoo ($16.00 12 fl. oz)- Gentle sulfate-free formula. Safe for Color Treated Hair. According to DermOrganic their Conditioning Shampoo provides, "a rich, luxurious lather that makes other sulfate-free shampoos jealous!" It does have a lovely lather, but it isn't the least bit stripping to the hair- which is particularly important for dry curly hair.

According to Dermorganic, "Hair and skin rely on important nutrients such as Essential Fatty Lipids (EFAs) and Amino Acids." Their shampoo is made with a "proprietary blend of EFA Lipid and Amino-Acid based skin cleansers. That means it is the only shampoo to moisturize, strengthen and rebuild the hair every time you clean your hair!" They posit, "whether your hair is colored, permed, heat styled or sun drenched, DermOrganic® has what it takes to impress stressed tresses."

I have found this shampoo to be very gentle on my hair (gentle enough that I can actually use it daily as previously noted), and as such I agree with their claim that it is ideal for color treated hair. The shampoo is "enriched with Argan Oil with Omega-6 and Linoleic Acid, Vitamin E, Panthenol, Rice Amino Acids, and anti-oxidant plant extracts to preserve the life of hair color."Additionally they claim that it is a superb as an all-over cleanser that leaves skin soft and supple, but I have only used it on my hair.

This is a really amazing shampoo for so many reasons. Chief among them is the fact that my hair feels soft and supple immediately after washing- before I even condition it! It is gentle and effective, and doesn't have the same detergent quality of shampoos that contain sulfates. What is very surprising is the fact that this shampoo creates a lovely rich and creamy lather despite the fact that it is sulfate free. This attribute alone will make it appeal to people who need a lather to feel as though their hair is clean, but they can now do so without sulfates! The cleansing agents employed in this fantastic shampoo mirror those generally found in skincare products- thus they are moisturizing rather than stripping.

Directions: Apply to wet hair, massage, and rinse. Follow with DermOrganic® Masque.

Ingredients: Aqua/Eau/D.Water, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate(1), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate(2), Decyl Glucoside, Cetearyl Glucoside, Methyl Gluceth-20, Infusion of Argan Oil & Sunflower Seed Extract & Grape Seed Extract & Rice Amino Acid & Sodium PCA & Panthenol & Tocopheral Acetate (Vitamin E), Glycereth-2 Cocoate/Benzoic Acid (natural preservative), Fragrance.

2) Daily Hydrating Conditioner ($16.00 12 fl. oz.)- DermOrganic Daily Hydrating Conditioner "neutralizes tangled tresses without silicones, propylene glycol or glycerin. Loaded with moisture factors, lipids and Panthenol to increase absorption, improve slip, eliminate tangles and prevent flyaways." I immediately noticed how soft, silky and manageable my hair was after using this conditioner, and anyone with curly hair can tell you that these attributes are hard to come by in a conditioner since our hair tends to be dry and often quite unruly. My naturally curly hair is detangled, has no flyways or frizz, and I can get a brush or a comb through it without the aid of other products. These things alone make this conditioner a real winner in my view. I imagine that people with straight or wavy hair will find that this conditioner will leave their hair luxuriously soft and silky, if not glossy. This is a fantastic moisturizing conditioner that leaves hair silky smooth and gorgeously manageable.

3) Intensive Hair Repair Masque ($16.00 8.5 fl. oz.)-  "is an intensive deep conditioner that revitalizes and repairs damaged hair from the inside out. It has unique properties that won’t build-up, or over-proteinize the hair, making it safe for everyday use."

DermOrganic posits, "Hair fiber is made of amino acids. Hair’s moisture is primarily derived from lipids. That’s why Masque contains a proprietary blend of rice amino-acids inside a lipid-based emulsification. Instead of coating the hair, DermOrganic works deep, depositing amino acids to strengthen and smooth each individual hair from the inside out while replenishing real, natural moisture."

Intensive Hair Repair Masque is a very deep conditioning masque formulated without silicone. It makes my hair softer than it has been in years, and for this alone I am grateful to have found this line! It is safe and gentle on "colored, permed, style heated, or sun drenched" hair, and therefore is a perfect solution for those who continually stress their tresses. It can be used everyday as a quick conditioner,  2-3 times a week as a deep conditioner, or you can even wear it overnight and awaken to amazingly soft and profoundly conditioned hair. This is an amazing must-have product!

Directions: Apply to clean hair from the scalp to the ends. Leave in 2 to 5 minutes as needed to repair damaged hair, then rinse. Use at least twice a week. On other days, quickly rinse through hair as a daily conditioner.

Ingredients: Aqua/Eau/D.Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Stearyl Alcohol, Caprylic Capric Triglyceride, Argan Oil, Rice Amino Acid, infusion of Sunflower Seed Extract & Grape Seed Extract & Sodium PCA & Panthenol & Tocopheral Acetate (Vitamin E), Glycereth-2 Cocoate/Benzoic Acid (natural preservative), Fragrance.

4) Leave-In Treatment ($25.00 4 fl. oz)- Leave-in Treatment, "based on Morrocan Argan Fruit Oil, has the unique quality of instant absorption into hair. It restores shine and softness while strengthening brittle hair. Replenishes nourishment to dry, damaged, colored hair. Protects hair from styling heat and UV damage. DermOrganic® Leave-In Treatment has the unique property of speeding up blow dry time by up to 30%! The heat from your blow drier makes the Treatment more viscous, allowing it to penetrate into the hair, displacing water trapped under the cuticle and allowing your blow drier to finish the hair quickly." While this product does speed up dry time, which is clearly a benefit to those who blow dry or otherwise heat treat your hair, I find that it makes my hair gorgeous with soft glossy curls when I let it dry naturally.

According to DermOrganic, "Unlike other Argan Oil based Treatments, DermOrganic® contains no alcohol, no dyes, and no artificial preservatives. It is a lightweight formula that spreads easily through the hair and on the skin. Because of its viscous formula, it will not weigh fine hair down. It won’t look greasy or attract dirt, making it perfect for all hair types. On Colored, permed, heat styled or sun drenched, DermOrganic® has what it takes to impress your stressed tresses. So gentle, Leave-in Treatment is ideal for color treated hair and can be used everyday on wet or dry hair as needed."

Directions: Best if used on towel-dried, clean hair. Pour a small amount into your palm and rub hands together About the size of a penny). Work through hair from roots to ends before blow drying. On thick or extra long hair, apply a little more. Style as usual.

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Argan Oil, Grapeseed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) Glycereth-2 Cocoate/Benzoic Acid (Natural Preservative), Fragrance.

5) Leave-In Spray Therapy ($20.00 3.4 fl. oz)- "DermOrganic Leave-In Shine Therapy seals, repairs and protects. Fine mist spray for easy application on long hair and especially for curls, adds softness, eliminates frizz and improves slip. Speeds blow dry time, protects cuticle and offers incredible shine and sleekness."

Leave-In Spray Therapy is a must-have product for people with curly hair! It has the perfect amount of slip to aid in the elimination of frizz and fly-aways. After use my curls form into perfect glossy shiny ringlets, and my hair is left as soft as satin.

Eliminates frizz & improves slip
Improves blow-drying time

Seals cuticle & protects color

    1. Hi Susan,

Thank you! I am really loving everything that I have tried from Dermorganic-- the quality is very high and the products are very effective! It is also available at many drugstores making it easy to find. If you have a membership card at CVS- it is my guess that their many discounts and promotions could be applied to these products as well! :D

  4. Have used the shampoo and masque for over a year. Started developing bumps and itchy scalp. Never thought it was due to the shampoo. I decided to switch to see what would happen and with in a week they were gone. I'm so sorry, but I'm afraid it is the argan oil. I also did some research and have found a few others allergic to argan oil. I put another product on my shin with argan oil and I have now got a patch of some sort of eczema. I hope it's just me...so sorry because I just love your product!

    1. Hi Arizona,

It definitely sounds as though you have an allergy or sensitivity to Argan Oil. I definitely wouldn't use any of those products, and maybe you should take all of them to your doctor with he lists of ingredients- to have them evaluated for all of the potential offending ingredients-- and maybe to get some sort of advice on the appropriate anti-inflammatory to use to knock down the eczema or whatever it is. Such a bummer though to enjoy products only to learn that they causes you such problems. I really like their products, and myself have used them for less than a year.

You might want to write to the company-- or call them to let them know.

I hope that your skin is back to normal! :-)

  5. I really loved this product for a long time. I started developing a very itchy scalp with small pimple like bumps on my neck and head. Never thought it was this product. I stopped using in for a week and now my scalp is normal again. Not sure what happened. Started using another product with argan oil on my leg. Now I have a sort of eczema. Perhaps some are actually allergic to Argan oil.

    1. I'm not surprised that you found that their are other people allergic to Argan Oil-- I forgot to mention in my last response that my mom had something similar occur when she was using coconut oil as a moisturizer. She ended up with a horrible allergic reaction-- she had hives all over the place, and as soon as she stopped using it her skin returned to normal. It was really uncomfortable and unpleasant for her! :(
