Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water SPF 30 for Complexion Perfection | Review & Swatches

Press Sample (Affiliate Links)

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water SPF 30 is a lightweight, water-based BB that is a primer, perfecter, hydrator and sunscreen in one. While it can be built up for fuller coverage, its feather-weight consistency lends itself to the perfect light, natural finish. I always prefer the coverage foundations, tinted moisturizers, and BB and CC creams, and therefore this type of formula ranks among my very favorite. While described as a semi-matte finish, I would add that the finish is natural, and creates the widely coveted "my skin, but better" appearance that I always seek in finishing products. The watery consistency spreads across the skin with ease, deposits pigmentation evenly, and it neither emphasizes pores, nor does it settle into expression lines.  Skin feels hydrated and balanced, and it creates the appearance of a perfected, but natural looking, complexion.

I shake the bottle very well, and then dispense a drop or two into the palm of my hand, and then dot drops on my face, and then use my fingertips to blend it into my skin. For fuller coverage, Smashbox recommends patting on additional drops.

According to Smashbox,

To keep things looking natural (even with SPF 30) under our L.A. photo studio lights, we created our most lightweight, dewy BB yet—a water-like hydrating formula with all the complexion perfecting benefits of our cream in each drop.

Features:
  • Primes. Perfects. Hydrates. Protects with SPF 30
  • Demi-matte, never flat finish with buildable coverage
  • Photoset Polymers create all-day wear
  • Oil- and alcohol-free; perfect for all skin types
  • Pat on for fuller coverage.
The shade that I am featuring is Light/Neutral, and while it appears slightly yellow-based and warm on my swatches, I find that it melts right into my skin and blends perfectly. The end result is seamless coverage, and it doesn't appear too warm for my cool-toned skin.
Directions: Shake bottle well. Use dropper to release 1 to 2 drops on the back of your hand and blend into face with fingertips. Pat on for fuller coverage.

Overall Assessment: I love all of the new innovations that have utterly transformed the realm of finishing products, and Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water is just the type of formula that I like to wear. It is so easy to use, and the finish is beautiful and natural. While it can be built-up for medium to full coverage, I prefer using it for the lighter coverage that I usually seek. I also really appreciate that it contains an SPF 30. A+

  1. I've been sort of mystified by this product. I know the coverage wouldn't be enough for me, and I know I wouldn't bother adding layers of it to build up. However, it sounds like a good primer with benefits to wear under a foundation that doesn't have SPF maybe? The shade looks very yellow. But you have made me curious about it, Helen, with your review (I forgot about this product), and I must remember to check it out at Ulta or Sephora next time

    1. It's a really interesting product, and I love the formula and finish! It might be lighter coverage in a single application than you may be looking for. It is a touch yellow, but I reshot the pictures of the swatches because my skin actually looked yellow in those initial shots. If you take a look at the new pictures you will get a realistic view of my skin color next to the BB Water. It's still yellow-based, but once it melts into my skin the yellow is no longer detectable. It's definitely worth taking a look on your next trip to Ulta or Sephora to see what you think.

  2. I like that there's several shades to choose from! More often than not, I end up mixing balms and powders to get my shade just right.

  3. This sounds so much like the Studio Skin foundation I have from Smashbox but the Studio Skin gives a little more coverage. If only Ulta gave samples I'd know if this was for me or not.

    1. I never used Studio Skin Foundation– so I can't compare them, but it is definitely worth checking this out on your next trip to Sephora or Ulta to see if it's a formula for you. I am quite happy with it, but I prefer to wear light coverage finishing products.
