Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Black Dahlia Comparison Swatches (Including Black Orchid)

PSA (Affiliate Links)

As I noted yesterday, Neiman Marcus now has the Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Black Dahlia ($50.00) available, and if you want one I urge you to get it sooner rather than later since it is among the Limited Edition pieces in the Holiday Collection.  You can see that its intensity is akin to Tom Ford Lip Color in Bruised Plum, but Black Dahlia is a bit more purple and intense. It is likewise darker, richer and deeper than Tom Ford Lip Color Matte in Velvet Cherry.
Black Dahlia definitely comes the closest to the illusive discontinued Tom Ford Lip Color in Black Orchid. Therefore, if you continue to mourn missing out on Black Orchid I would suggest getting Black Dahlia while you still can!
The Lip Color Mattes compared to the Tom Ford Lip Color lipsticks.
Overall assessment: Just like Black Orchid, Black Dahlia is destined to become a lipstick unicorn. Get yours while you still can!

Available online at Neiman Marcus, or contact Michelle Weinstein at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills and she can send you whatever you need! (310) 550-5900 x2517.

  1. a lipstick unicorn! Too funny.
A great sense of humor is a sign of acute intelligence, would you agree, my darling Helen?
I love, love, love this lipstick. I need it (not really, but I need it)
on a parenthetical note: I am liking the Sarah Chapman serum 1 very much. I am not sure if I'll repurchase after is gone. What I am loving to pieces is the Wei Royal Ming firming and hydrating cream. It is just gorgeous! I am glad I found something that actually makes my skin look better, more luminous, and healthier after all my face has gone through lately. I tried the Oro Gold serum, crazy expensive if I remember correctly, and it irritated my skin so badly that I developed a rush within an hour. I have not had much luck lately with my purchases :( I am just going to wait until you make your posts before I rush into more madness.
Many hugs to you gorgeous and to your lovely ones.

    1. LOL! Yes, it's definitely a gorgeous lipstick, and for anyone who mourns Black Orchid this one will be a definite must-have!

I'm so glad that you are liking the Sarah Chapman Serum 1. I'm thrilled that the Wei Royal Ming cream is working so well!! I'm sad to hear that the Oro GOld caused you so much trouble!

I'm still testing out the new oils-- but my mind is percolating on your top 10 request!

I hope that you are happy and healthy, and that school is a continued source of joy for you! xoxox

  7. Hmmm... what makes this line worth $50 a pop for lipstick? Not that I'm cheap but doesn't that seem a tad high for lipstick?

    1. Well, I have to first state that I avoided Tom Ford Lipsticks like the plague for a long time for fear of loving them, and then wanting a bunch of them. When I finally caved I fell hard down the rabbit hole, and now I have accumulated quite a few of them. I love them because they are richly pigmented, they glide across the lips effortlessly and have the perfect amount of cushion. They have the perfect amount of sheen, and look gorgeous on the lips. I used to think that it was absolutely and totally insane to spend this kind of money on Tom Ford and Guerlain Rouge G Lipsticks, and now I know longer scoff at the price of either. Would I like them to be less expensive? Of course, but I love the quality so much that I won't stop buying them whenever I find a color that I love! I hear your trepidation, I had it myself. I would definitely check them out in person, if you can-- then you can see if they speak to you. :-)

  9. The Tom Ford lippies are a do I really need them or do I just really really want them type of thing, I might just splurge and get one... one never hurt right? lol

    1. Hi Jessica! Yeah, I know what you mean! My problem is once I swatch them I typically cave, or obsess until I cave! :-) LOL! One never hurt anyone, but who can stop at one!

  10. So is there a dupe for First Time? As an older woman, matte lipsticks really don't do it for me. I think I may get Black Dahlia since I love those "unicorns!"
On a separate note, do you have a rec for a moisturizer for mature, sensitive, dry, flaking skin? I've tried both the By Terrys, since I love the rose scent so much!
    Thanks for any help!

    1. Hi,

There isn't really an exact dupe for First Time, but I would say that it falls somewhere in-between Nude Vanilla and Blush Nude.

Have you tried adding a beauty oil into your routine? For someone who loves rose scents there are a few really lovely oils that come to mind that you could put on underneath your moisturizer.

The first two are formulated for dry skin, but I use them gleefully on my combination skin:

Sisley Black Rose Precious Oil (I haven't yet reviewed it, but I featured it here):

      Aesop Damascan Rose Facial Treatment:

Aftelier Rose Face Elixir with Sandalwood and Frankincense:

Since you love the scent of the By Terry Creams then her Huile de Rose is lovely:

If you prefer a cream to an oil, then you might be interested in The Organic Pharmacy's Rose Plus Anti-Aging Cream (Discussed here):

      http://www.lolassecretbeautyblog.com/2014/10/the-love-list-and-lust-list-organic.html

This is a more earthy smelling rose than say the roses one smells in the By Terry products, but it is a really lovely nourishing and hydrating cream.

Let me know if you want more suggestions. :-)

      Thanks for stopping by.

  13. Kind of a random question, how long would you keep lipsticks for? One of the issues with hoarding is that I have way too many lipsticks than I can ever use up...
I just threw out a Tom Ford lipstick because it now smells plasticy, even though I definitely have not had it for that long. :(

    1. Hi AZ,

I only toss my lipsticks when they begin to smell or taste weird. Most of the time that doesn't seem to happen unless they are quite old. That definitely is a problem with hoarding lipsticks, but if it's not too late to find your lipstick I would actually call the SA and arrange to exchange it. That's a lot of money to toss out especially when you haven't had it for very long. :-(

    1. Black Orchid is definitely a stunning lipstick, Honey. You might check around on the off-chance that any of the Tom Ford counters still have a tube left-- the last tie that I checked (which has been quite a while) the Bloomingdale's in Sherman Oaks, CA had a couple of tubes left. Other than that you will probably have to resort to a makeup swap or eBay. Back Dahlia is not exactly the same, but it is close. Hopefully TF will eventually repromote Black Orchid :-)

  16. You really have me lusting after this Black Dahlia! Will it be my first Tom Ford lipstick? I don't know if I'll have a chance to see it in person before making a purchase, though, but your review is definitely enough to convince me if I don't get to! :-)

  17. bruised plum is lovely but i'd probably get more use out of indian rose or pinky dusk

    1. Bruised Plum is definitely a beauty, but sometimes I tone down the intensity by blotting it and adding a light pink gloss on top. Indian Rose and Pink Dusk are definitely easier to wear for a more casual daily lipstick. :-)
