The Cat Tree Conundrum Chez Lola's Secret Beauty Blog

I am always a bit surprised by the desire of my furry family members to stay close to me when I am working from home. There are so many kitty and puppy things that they could be doing-- yet Delilah is typically under my desk literally sleeping on my feet, and the kitties occupy their cat tree. Their preferred activity tends to be slumbering, and my lap and desk are considered the most coveted bits of real estate to the adjacent cat tree. When it comes to my lap Lola seems to have called dibs in perpetuity, and this is unquestionably why she has a blog named in her honor.

This eyesore of a cat tree serves as a refuge from which the cats escape the more objectionable canine behaviors (such as breathing, walking, running, barking and generally living in a feline household), and  as such it is something of a sacred feline space.

Lucy, however transgressive in her act of occupying a tier of the cat tree, is the size of a cat. Save for her ability to bark instead of meow, Lucy has the idea that she is essentially a cat, and her nap on the cat tree is simply proof positive of this belief. Nobody was more shocked by this spectacle than I, and oddly enough the cats didn't seem to care one bit. If cats and dogs can work out their differences-- why can't people?! It seems that humans could learn a lot from them.

  1. Omg so cute haha. I love your little furries. Great post on them. You're right, if they can get along .... ! (Even in the midst of an all out brawl, my cat will stop and start giving my pup a bath <3 ). That's sweet that you named your blog after your lap kitty :) Lucy is hilarious, before reading, I was wondering if she was a cat or dog lol. She fits right in. And the cats have her trained well. My puppy also thinks she's a cat!! It's kind of funny. She's a reagle (rottie beagle), but thankfully she's not as big as a rottie because she walks on furniture and everything else like she's a feline. It's just funny. And she doesn't understand why she's not allowed lol.

    1. Hi Mysty! I'm so glad that you enjoyed this post! That's so funny-- what your pup and kitty do sounds very familiar! Although sometimes Zeus, who is a touch insane, will start out by licking Delilah or Lucy, and then pretty soon it turns into biting and hissing-- but he's a full blown nut-job! OMG-- I have never heard of a Reagle!!! I love Rotties and Beagles-- what a great combination! Delilah and Lucy both like to stand on the couch to bark at dogs and birds as they go by the house! It's a losing battle trying to get them off of the couch!

It's funny, like you when I first saw this scene I thought Lucy was a cat-- and then I took a closer look and couldn't believe that she got herself up there, and that nobody chased her off of their perch! Pretty hilarious! :-)

  2. I love these pictures. I am a cat person myself, and love to see other cat condo set ups. That's amazing that Lucy also has a spot there, at first glance I thought they were all cats. Thanks for sharing, I loved this post.

    1. Hi Momo! I'm so glad that you love these pictures! I'm pretty much a cat person as well-- don't get me wrong, I love my two dogs immensely, but I just really love the sensibility of cats! This cat condo has definitely seen better days-- as they break parts of it I just hobble it back together the best that I can. Now in hindsight I wish that I had purchased a more sturdy and expensive model because this one isn't well enough constructed to endure my wild beloved savages- LOL! Lucy doesn't usually stake out a space on the condo, but does on occasion. I had been sitting and working at my desk and when I glanced over I didn't register that it was Lucy-- I just figured it was one of the kitties, but I did a double take and couldn't believe that little dog jumped up that high to nap with the kitties! You are so welcome-- I'm just thrilled that you loved this post! :-)

  4. Oh gosh! There was another. I realized it did'nt go through so I sent this one. The virtual and I are not connecting :(
Teaching is great though exhausting. The postdoc is amazing yet exhausting. As you can see my gorgeous one, I am tired. Very tired. But strangely, I am also really present and aware and excited and thinking a lot and writing and eating like a Tasmanian devil :D
I think I know what happens. The first time I published this comment I am about to post again, it reads as follows: comment as: google account. I post, It disappears and when I go to check, my name wefadetogray, appears after I have posted. Do I make sense?

    1. Well, I'm just glad that this one came through! I'm so glad that your teaching and Post-Doc are both great-- I'm not a bit surprised. I'm also not at all surprised that you are tired, but this is all so great and so exciting! I don't quite get why you have had so many comments disappear into the ether, but hopefully they no longer will! Summer school teaching has about a 1 1/2 weeks left to go for me, but thankfully I have a really great group of students-- they actually LOVED reading Walter Benjamin!! Can you imagine?! Needless to say I'm quite pleased by their enthusiasm, and when they connect those (often opaque) dots it is tremendously satisfying as you know all too well! xoxoxox

  5. Congratulations on having a wonderful group my darling. I can imagine how satisfying it is to teach Benjamin and have the kids actually enjoy it and understand it. I know we teach very similar things to different effects and applications. I am also glad you are almost about to be done. You need to rest! You have been going on non stop this summer and it is about time you put down your plume and do nothing. are you going to travel or will you go directly to teaching another module? I placed a massive order with Sephora right before I realized you have posted that Space NK GWP wonderful thing. I cannot catch a break! I am not sure if you are interested, but I let you know, that luckyscent is carrying all the Le Labo city exclusives for the month of September (I think). I already placed my order and am waiting anxiously. You may want to check it out ;)

    1. Thank you! Yes, it's such a great feeling when they have that a-ha moment-- as you know all too well this is one of the great gifts from teaching! I'm definitely going to put down my plume to regroup for a little while! I'm trying to figure out whether I am going to take a trip or just stay put and catch up on some sleep!

What did you buy from Sephora? Yes, it's definitely buying season, and the SpaceNK bag is nothing short of amazing. Of course there is also the Barneys LOVE YOURSELF event as well-- so many ways to go broke LOL! Thanks for the information about Le Labo! I could get myself into some serious trouble this month! xoxoxox
