Sunday Sun Day Volume XIX: Shade SPF 30+ Tinted Sunscreen | A Surfers Dream Come True

Press Sample (Unaffiliated Links)

As any surfer will tell you, it's imperative to use a reliable long-wearing truly water resistant sunscreen that is capable of standing up to long and intense sessions. Where many sunscreens have failed, Shade SPF 30 has excelled, and now the secret of many professional surfers is out.

Shade Sunscreen was developed by Strider Wasilewski, a California native and professional surfer, celebrated as a big-wave rider at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Now an ASP commentator for the World Tour and the owner of Shade Sunscreen, Strider has cracked the sunscreen code.

According to Shade Sunscreen,

Shade Sunscreen has been developed with a purpose! Develop a Mineral Based sunscreen that offers superior resistance to the elements and the lightness of a daily use sunscreen.  While being mindful of our sensitive environment, our reefs, and our bodies. Shade Sunscreen has no boundaries. We have formulated it for performance and priced it for everyone!

We love the outdoors, but know the skin damaging effects of the sun. We want everyone to enjoy the outdoors, be protected, protect their environment, their reefs, and their bodies while doing so. Shade Sunscreen has been tested all over the world in almost every climate, from snow in the mountains of NW Canada to the sweltering heat of southern Oaxaca, Mexico.
My husband, a lifelong surfer, who regularly wears a tee shirt declaring that he is married to the ocean, has professed his unmitigated love for Shade SPF 30+ Tinted Sunscreen.

He has suggested that,

Shade goes on super smooth and stays on longer than any sunscreen I've used in recent memory. Water actually beads off your skin which seems to help keep it from washing off.  It also doesn't give you a caked-on look when you really lather it on.  Even better is that a little seems to go a long way.  It's my new go-to sunscreen.

My observations: This is one of the few sunscreens that I have tested that really and truly is water resistant. In fact, not only did it offer superior sun protection protection, but water beaded up and rolled off of my skin unlike anything else that I have experienced. When I did want to remove it I found that it was so resilient that it took warm soap and water to finally break it down.

Not only is this sunscreen free of Parabens, Fragrance, Alcohol and Mineral Oil, but it is also loaded with healthy antioxidant rich skincare ingredients like Green Tea Extract, Olive Leaf Extract and Vitamin E. Therefore Shade Sunscreen simultaneously conditions and moisturizes the skin while protecting it against free-radicals, and of course it offers superior sun protection and longevity.
According to the company Shade is a,

Light weight mineral sunscreen using micro fine 12% Zinc Oxide and 8%Titanium Dioxide to provide broad spectrum protection from harmful UVA/UVB rays. This very water resistant formula has a matte non-greasy application that does not migrate and is free of synthetic fragrances, oil, parabens and chemical sunscreens. Shade SPF 30+ has been formulated to withstand the harshest conditions yet is still light enough to wear on a daily basis.  Has a light tint to blend with the skins natural tone.
In addition to the tinted version, shown above, Shade makes an opaque version that is white.

  1. Hi. Would it work well for everyday use under make-up, or is it more for pool and beach days?
    Thanks,
    Jaimie

    1. Hi Jaime!

I just tried it under makeup (NARS Tinted Moisturizer actually) and it definitely does work, but it is quite water resistant so it feels better without anything on top of it to me. However, the finish was quiet lovely, I have to admit. It's also sweltering heat here in Los Angeles right now-- so it would definitely feel differently if the weather wasn't quite so uncomfortable. I love that it is tinted-- so if you are wearing it at the beach or pool it definitely gives the skin a nice even finish. Of course I will be really lucky if I ever see that bottle again since my husband already put it in his surfing bag LOL! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :-)

    2. Thanks so much for the info. I live in Florida, so I'm used to dealing with hot and humid weather, too. I'm almost finished with a bottle of Koh Gen Do sunscreen. While I like it, it's not the most economical. I think I'll look at your other sunscreen reviews. Happy weekend to you, as well!

    3. My pleasure, Jaimie (sorry I misspelled your name the last time :)

Since you live in Florida and are no stranger to humid weather-- I think that you might seek want to seek out something a touch lighter. If you have been using the KGD sunscreen then you might really like the Clarins UV Plus Ecran Multi-Protection SPF 40- I love this stuff and the last time I bought it I got a crazy good deal at Macy's when they were having some mega GWP!

    1. Hi Chia-Yi! How are you?! It's a really fantastic sunscreen, and while I wouldn't classify it as very heavy in feel-- because it is comfortable to wear, but I prefer to use it without putting makeup on top. I think that it's great water resistance makes it the ultimate day out in the sun sunscreen. When I wore it alone it felt pretty light and unassuming, but when I added the NARS Tinted Moisture on top I definitely felt it. However, like I said to Jaimie- we are having sweltering heat in LA right now-- so I don't really want much of anything on my face. My husband said that when he's using it while surfing that it doesn't feel in the least bit heavy on his skin, but that he is aware that it's there (largely because the water beads up on his skin). :-)

    2. i'm in la too and i totally understand what you're saying! i've been using a cushion bb for my sunscreen and went back to a regular bb cream for one day and definitely felt the huge difference in weight. on the bright side, the unusual humidity means i don't have to slather body lotion on 2x/day! thanks for the clarification! one more question, does your husband religious reapply after a few hours like you're supposed to or one application for the entire day?

    3. I didn't realize that you also lived in LA! We should get together for coffee or linch one of these days! I know just what you mean-- this crazy weather makes me not want to put much of anything on my skin! He just said that he surfs longer than 80 minutes at a time and seldom stops surfing to reapply is sunscreen. He does, however reapply it between surf sessions, and also reapplies it when he gets out of the water-- especially when he knows he's going to be spending more time outside playing with the dogs etc. He often surfs multiple sessions, and by the time that he gets home from the beach he often already has a sunburn! Other times he's good about it, but you and I both know that sun damage is cumulative! :/

    1. I do as well, but I don't expose myself the way that one does while surfing for long periods of time! I definitely try to reapply, and the Goldfaden MD spray SPF is a favorite for reapplication since it doesn't disturb my makeup. That said when I am out and about during the day walking from store to car etc. it often slips my mind altogether! :/ Getting together sounds like fun! :-)
