Kevyn Aucoin The Lipgloss in Absinthia and Reyna: Swatches & Review

There is no doubt that Kevyn Aucoin is a line filled with so many celebrated products that are found in the kits and makeup bags of professional makeup artists and enthusiasts alike. One can definitely spend hours at the counter playing with the gorgeous colors and textures and petting his cult-status makeup brushes. Among my favored products from the line are the lip products, and lately I have been wearing The Lipgloss in Absinthia a great deal.
According to Kevyn Aucoin,

The Kevyn Aucoin lip gloss is formulated with vitamins extracted from sunflower seed oil, castor oil, and lanolin oil. These vital ingredients guarantee the look of shiny and glamorous lips. The oils help to keep lips shiny and smooth, without being greasy or slippery. A patented applicator mimics the look and feel of a "makeup artist's" pinky finger, allowing for precise and even application.

The Lipgloss formula is very comfortable on the lips, and while it is long-wearing it lacks the stickiness associated with longer wearing lip gloss formulas. It is a touch thicker than some lip glosses-- which no doubt accounts for its ability to cling to the lips longer. The two colors that I have, Absinthia and Reyna, are more sheer than opaque, but are stunning beauties regardless. I find that the formula is moisturizing, has the perfect amount of glistening twinkling shine, and the colors are utterly enchanting.

I also have to mention that the applicator tip is pure genius-- it is so user friendly, and designing it to mimic the "feel of a 'makeup artist's' pinky finger" really does allow for the most precise and even application.

Top to Bottom: Reyna and Absinthia
Reyna is a gorgeous coral
Absinthia is a complex sheer leaning plummy brown with stunning multicolored shimmer
(Both swatches are applied in multiple passes in order to show greater pigmentation.)
Reyna is a very easy to wear coral that is lovely alone, but a single pass is sheer enough that it is likewise gorgeous on top of your favorite lipstick. I'm drunken on the gorgeous complexity of Absinthia-- perhaps intended to evoke sipping on Absinthe (though thankfully Absinthia is not green like the beverage). While it leans on the sheer side the base color does lend some color to the lips, and the multicolored shimmer delivers gorgeous luminosity. I am utterly enchanted by Absinthia, and suspect that I will need a replacement tube sooner rather than later.
Be still my beating heart-- look at the way that the light dances across the surface of the multicolored shimmer in Absinthia!
Overall assessment: I'm ridiculously happy with Kevyn Aucoin's The Lipgloss formula, but Absinthia is really making my heart sing!

    1. Hi Kimmy! These glosses are definitely a nice place to start wit Kevyn Aucoin! I'm intrigued by the "pinky" applicator as well-- it feels so nice on the lips, and it applies the gloss so efficiently! Absinthia is definitely an interesting color-- I'm pretty transfixed by this shade! :-)

  2. lovely colors, helen, two of my absolute favorites. if i did not already have a drawer full of mercier glosses in the same hues, i would be inclined to indulge. i shall have to be satisfied with the acquoin purchases i have already made, but will keep these in mind should i run out of mercier as some of those shades have been discontinued.

i am back from my trip to sacramento with a fabulous new cut and style, from a stylist who has been trained in the ouidad method. i am thrilled with it! i tried out the hourglass powders and blushers and they do not seem to be that awe inspiring on dry skin, i'll stick with my cream based products. i did pick up the algenist oil that just came out. i found it rather soothing after a hot day in twon. will keep you posted!

    1. Hi Cheryl! <3

I know just what you mean about having piles of glosses-- I would definitely hold off on getting these then, but they are well worth considering when you are ready to replace those LM glosses!

Oh, it sounds as though you struck gold with your new cut and style! Ouidad method, no less!

Well, it's really a good thing that you didn't buy any of the Hourglass powders sight unseen since they don't work wonders on your dry skin! Money saved!

Algenist oil that just came out?! What what?!!!!!!! Did they launch another one, or is it the same one that I reviewed? I love their face oil-- it is so lightweight, and definitely soothing! I can't wait to hear what you think about it after you have used it for a while longer!

      Have a wonderful day!

  3. the algenist oil i picked up is called 'advanced anti-aging repairing oil', i think it is the one you reviewed relatively recently. for me, living in the boonies, it is still 'new'. :)

i was a bit worried about a few of the ingredients, but decided to let the woman at sephora put it on anyway because i was quite flushed and she said it would help. i did see an immediate reduction in redness and put it in my basket. i am watching closely for any reaction, but have not seen any signs yet.

the other thing i tried and am in love with is the new-ish reformulated stick foundation from bobbi brown. as my skin is in very good shape at 50 (35 years of good skin care habits has it's benes!) i tend to use a tinted moisturizer all over with a stick foundation only on the red areas instead of a concealer. my current faves in this process are NARS' pure radiant TM and now, the bobbi brown stick. overall, i'm pleased as punch with my summer skincare/makeup routine.

    1. That's the one that I have-- I sure hope that it works for you because it is really such a lovely oil. That's amazing that it took down the red so quickly-- I definitely agree with you that you pay very close attention to the way that your skin responds to it, and hopefully you have no negative reaction!

I keep hearing amazing things about that reformulated Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation-- I need to take a look at it. I have the Tom Ford Foundation Stick, and really really love it! You are such a wise woman for having maintained such good skincare habits. The NARS tinted moisturizer is one of my very favorites as well-- I use it all of the time. Mixing your TM and foundation stick is a great idea-- I do the same type of thing when I need more coverage in some areas than in others.I'm so happy to hear that you are loving your current summer skincare/makeup routine. Let's just hope that the Algenist Oil works out for you-- because it is a perfect addition to your summer skincare routine for added moisture and a healthy glow. If it does end up working for you-- then you have to try adding a drop or two to your foundation or tinted moisturizer-- the result is sublime! :-)

  5. I love me some shimmer, and Absinthia looks beautiful! I was just turning my Dior Diablotine gloss over in my hands in the sun the other day and thinking how nice it was even just to look at... but then a rogue and her shiny things, right?

Kevyn Aucoin is a brand that I would really love to try! Unfortunately the availability is rather limited here (I think MECCA cosmetica has a few bits?), but I see things all the time on Lisa Eldridge's videos and awesome blogs like yours, and IT TEMPTS ME. :-D
