MAKE Silk Cream Lipstick in Taffy: Review & Swatches

Gift with Purchase (Barneys New York Love Yourself Gift Bag) (Affiliate Links)

Ahhh, MAKE Silk Cream Lipsticks are such things of beauty! I was lucky enough to find Taffy, described as a medium pink with purple undertones, in my last Barneys New York Love Yourself Gift Bag, and I couldn't be more happy with the shade or the formula!
MAKE describes their Silk Cream Lipstick as a,

Vivid, saturated color that does double duty as a protective moisturizing treatment with antioxidant vitamins, rosehip, soybean and safflower oils. Aloe and chamomile extracts further condition lips. Feather-resistant and intensely pigmented in true-wear shades.

Additionally they put their money to good use by supporting a great cause.

Makeup on a mission. MAKE is proud to donate 10% of retail sales to the nonprofit organization We See Beauty Foundation, which benefits women-run, worker-owned cooperative businesses. All products are made in New York City.
The formula is an antioxidant rich moisturizing lip treatment with stunning pigmentation. While I do find Taffy a bit moisturizing I don't find it akin to a lip balm in that regard. The texture is silky smooth with the perfect amount of cushion for comfortable wear, but it doesn't have so much slip that the wear-time is radically diminished. Therefore, MAKE Silk Cream Lipstick in Taffy clings to the lips and lasts for several hours without the need for a touch up (I have gotten anywhere from 3-5 hours of wear-time depending on whether or not I was eating or drinking). The color is buildable for maximum intensity, but can easily be sheered out. The color is definitely a blue-based mid-tone pink that will surely delight pink lippy lovers-- it really is stunning!
Not tested on animals, paraben-free, hypoallergenic
In addition to the Cream finish, MAKE also has satin and matte lipstick formulas.

Overall assessment: MAKE Silk Cream Lipstick in Taffy is a fantastic lipstick, and I clearly need to make a trip to Barneys New York to pick up a few more shades!

  1. pretty but they lost me at soybean oil :( but just out of curiosity, is it less moisturizing than the 90% pigment lipstick queen you recently blogged about? or a trick of light in the swatches?

    1. Then this is a definite no-go for you! That's an interesting question-- the formulas are so completely different that I didn't even think to compare them. The Lipstick Queen feels so much thicker and more substantial than the MAKE Lipstick-- all of that pigmentation really coats the lips substantially, and the thinner consistency of the MAKE Lipstick makes it feel closer in texture to a balm. However, the Lipstick Queen feel more emollient on my lips for some reason, and for that reason I think it may feel a touch more moisturizing. I wouldn't say that either should be used in lieu of a lip balm, but I also haven't found that either dry out my lips if I don't apply a balm first. I do definitely think that the Lipstick Queen swatches look more juicy in the swatches. Both are wonderful formulas. :-)

  2. I've got Taffy and Miami Beach Silk lipsticks from MAKE, and the formula just did nothing for me at all. Even over a lip primer I found them to be unforgiving, emphasizing imperfections and a bit chalky looking. Lovely colors, though.

I do like the MAKE matte formula on the one I've tried thus far.

    1. Oh no!!! I'm so sorry to hear that, Lulubelle! It's very interesting that their matte formula works for you and this formula doesn't! Have you tried them over a lip balm instead of a primer instead? I'm very curious about the matte formula! :-)

  3. What a pretty color. I know why Lulubelle said it was unforgiving since my lips need to be well moisturized to use the brand. The pigmentation is so intense and beautiful.

    1. Isn't it a lovely pink?! Interesting. I am going to forego moisturizing my lips in the morning when I do my skincare routine, and will apply Taffy directly from the tube to my lips to see if that changes anything for me. Now I am very curious! I agree with you about the pigmentation-- it is so intense and beautiful, indeed!
